Review: Having recently revived his Utopia Project alias for a surprise new 12" on Running Back, legendary New York deep house producer Rheji Burrell returns to Gerd Janson's label with an EP credited to another one of his Nu Groove era pseudonyms, NY Housin' Authority. "Out Of Body Experience" boasts seven tracks, all of which explore similar sonic pastures to the project's classic, late '80s/early '90s material. That means tactile synthesizer basslines, ear-catching melodies, classic house synth sounds and drum machine beats rich in Burrell's usual infectious swing. Highlights include the breezy and life-affirming jazziness of "3rd Time", the bass-heavy, intergalactic thump of "5th Time" (a cut that would neatly fit into Bleep techno-influenced sets) and the summery warmth of "2nd Time".

Review: There was much gnashing of teeth from committed vinyl enthusiasts when Maurice Fulton decided to release his latest Boof full-length - the follow-up to 2011's inspired Sshh, Dandelions at Play - solely as a digital download. Having rescued that album from obscurity via a physical release, Gerd Janson has decided to do the same with The Hydrangeas Whisper, here delivering a vinyl version. Given the album's undoubted quality, it's something of a result for wax-maniacs everywhere. While Fulton takes a few odd turns - see the dubbed-out, trippy title track and after-party techno throb of "Backlash" - for the most part it's as expected, with the Chicagoan-in-London delivering a typically jazzy, disco-flecked range of sweet, life-affirming dancefloor cuts.

  2. Kickin' In (8:18)
  3. Warped Minds (6:07)
  4. Warped Minds (TJJ More Cowbell reprise) (5:00)
Review: With a discography that stretches right back to the mid 1990s, Johanz Westerman is one of Holland's longest-serving underground house and techno producers. He's also a student of electronic music history, as this wholehearted, EP-length tribute to the work of Giorgio Moroder and Patrick Cowley proves. Title-track "More Love" is little less than an acid-laden, instrumental re-build of the Moroder-produced, Cowley-remixed Donna Summer classic "I Feel Love", while "Kickin In" is the kind of muscular, synthesizer-heavy electro-disco throb-job that would have gone down a storm at legendary San Francisco club the Trocadero at the turn-of-the-80s. Flipside opener "Warped Minds" explores similar sonic territory and sounds like it was inspired by Sylvester's "Do You Wanna Funk". There's even a sweaty, delay-laden rhythm track reprise for those DJs who love percussion.

Review: Since shifting his focus more towards atmospheric, Balearic-minded sounds a few years back, Tornado Wallace has delivered some of the most deliciously humid and glassy-eyed music around. Hopes are naturally high, then, for this long-anticipated debut album. It picks up from where his sublime ESP Institute, Beats In Space and Second Circle releases left off, delivering a warm, evocative, sun kissed blend of shuffling Balearic grooves, horizontal soundscapes, gentle tropical workouts, and rich, synth-laden explorations. There's a pleasing haziness throughout, with live percussion and instrumentation rubbing shoulders with glistening synthesizers, ear-pleasing electronics and pulsing drum machine hits. In other words, it's a fine debut album.

  4. Today (feat Sui Zhen - I:Cube Aujord'Hui beats) (5:09)
Review: Given Gerd Jansen's experience, connections and deep-rooted knowledge of underground dance music culture, it's perhaps unsurprising that he's recruited some top-draw talents to remix Tornado Wallace's fantastic Lonely Planet album. Versatile veteran I:Cube is arguably the star of the show. Not only does he deliver a deliciously saucer-eyed take on "Today" - think spacey, left-of-centre synth-pop fused with dream house aesthetics and lolloping electro beats - but also a slightly more tribal-sounding "Beats" version full of dub delays that's equally as inspired. Elsewhere, Move D provides a darker, thickset deep house version of "Today", while Scandolearic overlord Prins Thomas turns "Trance Encounters" into a bubbling, otherworldly epic rich in bustling acid lines, descending melodies and sun-kissed guitars.

Juno Jam EP
Cat: RB 048. Rel: 17 Jun 14
  1. Juno Jam
  2. Tom Jam
  3. Djungel Jam
Review: Genius Of Time and Running Back seems like such a perfect fit you wonder why the Swedish duo haven't graced Gerd Janson's label before now. It might be because Alexander Berg and Nils Krough aren't exactly the most prolific of duos when it comes to original material with only three EPs to their name since they inaugurated the Aniara project in such sublime fashion back in 2010. Fans of Genius of Time and John Talabot's DJ Kicks mix have added reason to engage in some vociferous rejoicing as the former's sublime offbeat number "Juno Jam" contribution to the latter release is centre stage on this 12". In addition to the A Side bliss of that Berg and Krough slip in two more percussive numbers on the flip which Running Back quite rightly point out would make "Joe Claussell proud".

Prescription EP
Cat: RB 020. Rel: 14 Jan 10
  1. Space & Time (unreleased re-edit)
  2. Prescription Every Night
Review: Running Back Records chief Gerd Janson has decided to revive a piece of dance history by reissuing Heaven & Earth's classic 1995 house offering. Back then, producers Luke Solomon, Rob Mello and Zaki D teamed to form a collective known as Heaven & Earth. Paying homage to their favourite label, Prescription Records who were putting out the deep, acid house that they loved from owners Chez Damier and Ron Trent, the trio collaborated on two original tracks - the now legendary "A Space and Time" and "Prescription Every Night".

The release blew up, turning the three London producers into household names overnight. - so much so that collective pronged off into their own solo careers. Such has been the demand for each, that a remix of "Beau Mot Plage" and Red Nail's "I Think of You" are the only times that they worked together again.

Fifteen years later, Gerd Janson secured the rights to re-issue the release and even loaded the EP with a couple of note worthy additions to entice record collectors to pick up a copy even if the original sits proudly in their record box. An unreleased edit of "Space and Time", where the piano takes on a more dubby feel, is joined by the disco tinged "Prescription Every Night", immortalized in Carl Craig's infamous 1995 Essential Mix.

This re-mastered and re-shaped EP is an original slice of the disco-house sound that has become so fashionable of late. As dance culture becomes more and more reflective, it is testament to the classic early tracks that inspired a generation that they are picked up again fifteen years later and re-issued for a new generation to treasure and cherish

  6. Music (Boris Dlugosch Tribal reprise) (1:55)
Review: Here's a classic to those who know, that gets a much needed reissue by Running Back. Originally released in 1984, Syncbeat was a project by Craig Bevan and the lesser known Pete Ramon who were pioneers of UK electro and "Music" was definitely geared towards the breakdancing culture of the time. With its slap bass synths, sharp beats and jacked vocals, it's a real zeitgeist of early '80s street culture. The original remix was by none other than Greg Wilson, and it comes with a bunch of new renditions by another legend - Hamburg's Boris Dlugosch. He delivers some perspectives that add some much appreciated dynamics for modern dancefloors while remaining respectful to the original.

  1. Neutron Dance (6:39)
  2. Division Ave (4:24)
  3. Shockzoid (9:07)
  4. Moonshake Mine (6:04)
Review: In recent times, Krystal Klear's EPs have wholeheartedly paid tribute to a variety of (mostly New York-based) historic clubs, artists and dance music sub-genres. While he's officially broken the spell with The Division EP - his first outing on Running Back - for the most part it's still a heart-warming, retro-futurist treat. He kicks things off with the cheery, Italo-disco revivalism of "Neutron Dance", where throbbing synthesizer arpeggio lines and mid-80s melodies are underpinned by a bustling mid-tempo house groove, before slowing things down via the Balearic synth-pop shuffle of "Division Ave". Turn to the flipside and you'll find more muscular, freestyle-meets-acid house fun (wild and mind-altering peak-time highlight "Shockzoid") as well as the baggy, glassy-eyed Balearic house rush of closer "Moonshake Mike".

Review: It's been nearly three years since the last instalment in Running Back's occasional series of DJ-friendly drum tools. Following solo percussion 12s from Todd Osborn and Redshape, up-and-coming producer Ketiov steps up to the plate. His drum tracks are predictably dense and percussively layered, with clattering, pots and pans hits wrapping themselves around dense, off-kilter kick-drum patters and, in the case of opener "Rhythm#1", restless cowbells. In some ways, it's reminiscent of Max D's work under the Dolo Percussion alias, though Ketiov's cuts do include a few more subtle musical elements - the odd acid line here, a squelchy bassline there - not to mention a swathe of slamming, peak-time friendly tools.

  9. DOG - "The Key" (Lunar dub) (8:05)
  10. Fila Brazillia - "Mermaids" (6:19)
Review: Hamburg's Front club was a fixture of Germany's underground club scene throughout the '80s and early '90s, with resident DJs Klaus Stockhausen and later Boris Dlugosch championing house music (amongst other things) long before it was fashionable to do so. It certainly made an impression on Gerd Janson, who asked Stockhausen and Dlugosch to put together a celebratory retrospective of Front favourites. This second part (of two) contains some real gems, from Dlugosch's edit of Toyin Agbetu's Dream 2 Science influenced deep shuffler "After The Storm" and the Bobby 'O' style '84 sleaze of Mark Imperial's "J'Adore Danser", to the mid-'80s NYC house flavours of CT Satin's "I Found A Friend (Underworld version)" and the Italian dream house colours of inspired early Fila Brazillia single "Mermaids".

Review: If you've danced at house-focused clubs and festivals this year, there's a strong chance that you've strut your stuff plenty of times to Krystal Klear's "Neutron Dance". The hooky, riff-heavy original version isn't included on this remix package, but happily the assembled reworks are all killers in their own right. We're particularly enjoying the squeezable synth bass, punchy machine drums and fluid piano solos that catch the ear on Paul Woolford's ace "Jolly Roger Version", not to mention the sweaty breakbeats, restless drum machine cowbells and thrusting New York freestyle bass underpinning Fango's fantastic take. Elsewhere, Gerd Janson straps on his "Birkies" and re-imagines the cut as a retro-futurist house treat while Mano Le Tough doffs a cap towards Italo-disco and throbbing big room house.

Review: Zanzibar born, Sheffield-based vocalist Mim Suleiman presents her fifth album on the ever reliable Running Back imprint - and is produced by legend Maurice Fulton. Ultra-modern African music merges with pop, house and disco, while lyrics sung in Swahili deal with a variety of sentimental themes. Suleiman has been described as "Mama Africa of the modern era" and is in fine form on "Si Bure": from the spiritual life music of "Aruka" and "Na Mia", to the uplifting soulful house vibe of "Usiogope" or "Kuemenora" - which are geared for some evocative moments on the dancefloor. We're also loving the powerful techno beats of "Haki" which provide an intense backing for Suliman's powerful vocal delivery as well as lo-slung boogie "Wewe" and the Animal Collective vibes of "Patosha", where Suleiman's celestial voice calls out over a wide open plain.
