Symbiosis (double 12")

Symbiosis 2 (6:39)
Symbiosis 3 (2:50)
Symbiosis 4 (8:04)
Symbiosis 5 (7:20)
Symbiosis 6 (7:52)
Review: After having two of his earlier tunes remodelled by Carl Craig and Mike Huckaby thanks to Sushitech, Detroit's Delano Smith re-emerges on the label with a double pack of tunes made with Brawther under the D&B Productions. That moniker has more to do with the pair's name rather than a suddenly conversion to drum & bass, although there's a love of dubby effects and deep bass power here that - at a stretch - could be said to be in common. The six tracks - Symbiosis' 1-6 - are smooth and simple, but executed with an ear (or four) for an irresistible groove, an economic but rhythmic keyboard stab and a knack for squeezing something nicely soulful from the barest ingredients. Nice work indeed.

You're The One For Me (Ross Couch remix) (5:35)
You're The One For Me (Ricky Morrison remix) (7:20)
Review: No one does edits like the one and only Dr Packer. Whatever he turns his hand to turns to dance floor gold. This tidy new 12" on Tinted sees him join forces with the Sonic Soul Orchestra for 'You're The One For Me' which features the iconic vocals of Colonel Abrams. The original is just feels good and soulful house music. The instrumental strips away the vocal then comes a Ross Couch mix that bounces with more piano energy and a Ricky Morrison remix with plenty of dazzling disco chords.

Dan Only - "Love Saturates" (Black Loops 6am mix) (6:00)
Sean Roman - "Sir William" (5:06)
Jamn Ensemble - "Convection" (6:32)
Review: Toronto label Selections has become a firm favourite with house heads and now starts a nice sideline with its Special Edition 2023 series. This one welcomes Lea Lisa with her track 'Conversation Between Us' (Heide Club Mix) which is straight up underground house for the heads. Then comes an unreleased Javonntte remix of Evenn's 'One For Love' that pairs things back to raw dub essentials. Dan Only's 'Love Saturates' then gets a fine and formerly unreleased remix by Italy's Black Loops that has pristine drum programming and a fine bassline. Add in Sean Roman's jazzy dancer 'Sir William' and Jamn Ensemble's 'Convection' and you have a timeless house EP.

Love & Care (7:11)
Dub & Care (5:38)
Review: Heads High keeps up the good early work with a third interesting offering, this time in the form of a meeting of the fiendish minds of Mike Misiu and Eddie Smilie, aka Wednesday Club. They offer up late-night club sounds with plenty of musical nouse and worldly nuance that comes as a result of late-night sample mining across the African musical landscape. Their tunes are crafted on nice analogue gear so have that lovely freed edge feel and from the space-house of 'Magic Body' to the swaggering dub of 'Magic Dub' via the cosmic expressiveness of cruising groover 'Love & Care'. This one gets dubbed out to close a fine dancefloor adventure.

Review: Repeat continue their exploration of Mark Ambrose's imperious tech house legacy with another double pack that will delight diggers and dismay sharks in equal measure. 'Harmony (Sun Mix)' is a truly dreamy cut that will go down a treat as we head towards sunnier dancefloor moments across the Northern Hemisphere. 'My Soul Your Soul' has a deadly broken beat edge to the drum programming, while 'Destiny Angel' creates a starry-eyed disco-house fusion that has to be heard to be believed. The quality and ingenuity spilling out of every one of these tracks is a marvel, and as a collection this release helps cement Ambrose's position as one of the finest artists to emerge from the mid 90s UK scene.

Hyped By Light (7:14)
Jabba The Hot (7:49)
Heading To NL (6:15)
Pankow Plastic (5:28)
Review: Brazilian Fabe has been at the heart of the evolution of house and tech in recent years. His kinetic, high-impact sound has brought freshness to the new school and continues to do so now with this EP on the young but promising Les Enfant label out of Spain. 'Hyped By Light' is a perfect embodiment of his sound - garage-style percussive precision, clipped but bouncing kicks and great vocal samples. 'Jabba The Hot' is another one to sweep you off your feet, 'Heading To NL' is darker and more stripped back but no less potent and 'Pankow Plastic' shuts down with a little cosmic energy. Pure dancing tackle of the highest order.

Track 1 (6:02)
Review: A seventh installment of the Moxy Edits series by the anonymous Myedits project, who rework old disco, funk and soul tracks into modern dancefloor weapons. Moxy Edits 007 features a singular, utter heater: a funky and upbeat edit of a classic by Q-Tip - 'Breathe And Stop' - which lends the song an added inflamamatory property, like a single-strike match pre-dipped in a deep-frying vat of liquid French house.

Roots Revisited
Cat: SS 005. Rel: 13 Jul 23
Dan Ryan (feat Jerrald James) (11:43)
Walking Thru The Sky (feat Ron Smith - Liberation mix) (10:43)
Review: Detroit's Theo Parrish continues to serve up expressive and utterly unique new music, but his vast back catalogue will always remain of almost just as much interest to house heads. As such his Sound Signature label has repressed some quality gems from his discography. 'Roots Revisited' first came back towards the tail end of 1998 and finds the sonic shaman in heavy percussive mode while off-grid rhythms and his unique take on soul shining through. 'Dan Ryan' is deeply meditative, while the 'Walking Thru The Sky' (feat Ron Smith - Liberation mix) is a dusty and scuffed-up deep house exploration with Theo's trademark keys.

Seasons Of My Life
Cat: SS 029. Rel: 20 Sep 06
The Rotating Assembly - "Seasons Of My Life" (feat Billy Lo)
Green Pickles - "Feedback" (feat Billy Lo & M Pittman)
Review: Sound Signature kick off the new year with a pleasing reissue of some smoky soul from Theo Parrish's outlet for his most jazzy tendencies. On "Seasons Of My Life" Billy Lo croons over a muted trumpet while a surprisingly rough stomp gets hammered out of a live kit. It's a dreamy, sunkissed jam with all the loose, free-flowing elements you would expect from something with Parrish's stamp on it. Marcellus Pittman helps out on "Feedback", as a sparser, meandering groove does the nasty with some restrained keys. For that Detroit beatdown flavour away from the dancefloor, this is as good as it gets.

I Need Your Love (Right Now)
Cat: CORE 92AB. Rel: 13 Aug 13
I Need Your Love (Right Now) (Lem Church mix)
Penetration
Review: Digging back for one of the earlier Mood II Swing archive jams from 1992, the Slow To Speak stable continue their canny reissue series in fine style, taking the two most significant tracks from the Wall Of Sound EP and spreading them out over a whole side of vinyl each. "I Need Your Love (Right Now)" is vintage New York house music, tripped out and loopy just as much as it is funky and soulful. The keys and vocal rips can't be argued with, while the beat is a prime slice of early shuffle, and there's no let up on "Penetration" either. Taking a light tone with the snazzy chord stabs, Ciafone and Springsteen nailed it here as much as they would come to throughout the rest of the 90s.

Review: It's been a decade since Underground Resistance affiliate Santiago Salazar made his debut on Los Hermanos. Surprisingly, this double pack represents his first attempt releasing an album, though whether Chicanismo was intended to be a 'proper' full length is a moot point. There's certainly plenty to enjoy, with Salazar melding his usual influences - deep house, Detroit techno, tech-house, Latin rhythms and dreamy, rave-era, breakbeat driven grooves - into a range of attractive, floor-friendly cuts. There's naturally much to enjoy throughout, from the title track's Motor City beats, heavy bass and swirling pads, to the bumpin' tribal rhythms and mangled tropical bird noises of "UKB to LAX".

Four slices of exceptionally cool house music, from 'Soul People' with its chuntering organs and inspirational rabble rousing sampled from Martin Luther King to 'Meditation' with its cowbell-enhanced groove and oozing, soulful vocals. Review:  London label/clothing line Handy has already put out a fine EP in collaboration with Bristol's Shall Not Fade while Retromigration has had big 12"s on Last Year At Marienbad and We Will Always Be A Love Song this year. Now the two on-form forces come together for a fresh EP of dusty, woozy, seductive house. 'Also Durag' has classy skip in the drums and steamy sax motifs while 'Earl Jeffers' flips it into something heavy and sweaty. 'You & Dion' is a freeform house jam with squelchy bass and atmospheric vocals then 'Stop The Presses' rounds out with dreamy, carefree house goodness.

It kicks off with the full throttle 'Teacher's with jacked up drums and percussion. Review: Spirit of Sundaze Ensemble is a superb and sophisticated ensemble of musicians that look to recreate the many different sounds that have made co-founding member James Priestley's Secretsundaze such an essential UK party over the last 20 years. They have hosted some special early live shows that immediately won crowds over and now they are starting to drop some of their own wares via their own Sose Recordings label. Review: Razor-N-Tape is a bastion of deep house brilliance as once again perfectly exemplified by this vibrant new package from Flamingo Pier. New Zealand collective Flamingo Pier have dropped several well received 12"s on the Soundway Records label and then came good with 2021's self titled full length. They are still all about bringing happy, sunny vibes to a tropical disco template here with the likes of the synth lead 'How 2 Feel' then funky vocal pumper 'Remedy'. There are cosmic rays lighting up the big chords and aloof vocals of 'Beneath The Neon' then a couple of remixes on the flip bring more dubby disco-house sounds.

Raoul's 'Vae Victis' is first up to get a remix and that is from Luvless who brings modern power with old school dreaminess. Tilman is next up with an Atmospheric Mix of Marc Brauner's 'The Feeling' which has potent 90s vibes and Soela teams up with her partner in crime Module One for a super chunky groove to close the a-side in style. Review: Toy Tonics is a label that has always done house music well - it doesn't follow trends, it doesn't look to reinvent the wheel, it doesn't repeat the same old tricks. What it does is serve up superb good grooves with plenty of character that are always going to get any crowd going no matter the time or place. The label now goes big with this double 12" of Gomma Dancefloor Gems Vol 1. It is, they say, a collection of "Y2K indie dance tracks" that were all originally released on the German Gomma Records label between 2001 and 2010 and were right up there with music on labels like James Murphy's DFA and Trevor Jackson's Output Records as the hottest of the day.

Review: Otherwise known as Doc Bozique and fresh from a reissue album on Cosmic Soup, Howard Dodd's work as Anoesis has been well and truly revived and progressed out of the archival realm into actual new productions. On this record for Cyphon, we're treated to more of the elegantly warped, subliminal machine funk associated with Anoesis since his cult mid-90s releases, veering from the deep-tracking sonar techno of 'Track Thirty 7' to the Guidance-ready bump of Callisto, which must surely be a tribute to the legendary house producer. There's soul and flair by the bucketload, calling out to all those who value a little imagination in their club music.

Review: Dominik Marz and Radial Gaze are known groove driven sounds embellished with smart percussion, and that is just what they serve up here for Urge To Dance. Their collaborative 'Shintu' EP opens with 'Shintu', a party starter thanks to its ever more wild synth leads and chunky drum loops. 'Arkao' is another mix of bright synth theatrics with tightly sequenced arpeggios, subtle acid lines and elastic drums. Things get more freaky and acid-centric on the wonky 'Running Out' and 'Devotion' shuts down with another body-popping rhythm led by insistent stabs that never quit.

'The Night Is Coming' opens up with funky drum loops and twisted metallic synth lines that swerve in and out of the grooves. 'Keep On Prayin' has a more urgent feel with busier percussive lines and some subtle vocals adding the soul in a gospel fashion then 'Push Em In The Face' is another gospel tinged house looper a la Floorplan which really makes a mark and also comes as an instrumental.

House legend Ashley Beedle kicks it off, taking the original of 'Beware The Stranger' over to the dancefloor with his signature lush strings and sumptuous keys. Think Frankie Knuckles meets Nuyorican Soul. Then comes an array of curveballs; Matthew Herbert gets lowercase with it on his own dub of the song, producing an ambient-audiophilic post-punk resonator, while Bruise and Foremost Poets reintroduce us to the dance with further, highbrow soul-spiced iterations of 'Collage' and 'Blackbird' respectively.

Review: Experimental deep house superstar Bella Boo returns to Studio Barnhus for her latest album DreamySpaceyBlue, and expands outwards into a more varying tempo range in the process. If album titles are anything to go by, this one should give you an indication of the kind of sonics you'll hear when popping this 180g cream vinyl record on the belt-driven plate. Moving in more bittersweet, heartstring-tugging directions after a jankier set of EP movements years prior, the likes of 'Can't Stop' and 'Heartbeat/Into The Night' move through every influence from Jersey bounce to breaks, pitting deeply affected vocals and spacious synth bubblings against a thematic backdrop of "dark times (demanding) love, healing and forgiveness."

Review: Purple Disco Machine makes the sort of warm, colourful and feel-good sounds that have united festival crowds all over the world since he first broke through. For his latest tune he has worked with UK chart-topper Duke Dumont on a single, 'Something On My Mind' which melts nostalgic disco goodness with fresh and contemporary production. It is jin indie-tinged cut with vintage synths and groove-driven basslines with vocals from rising band Nothing But Thieves, whom Purple Disco Machine remixed not so long ago. This is another crossover hit in the making for disco-revivalists Purple Disco Machine and it comes on a 12" that is limited to 300 copies.

Review: As part of National Album Day 2023 - yep, it's new to us too - Sony are reissuing Leftfield's seminal Leftism album. It set a high water mark for dance music albums very early on and has rarely been better when it comes to complete listening experiences that also pack a dancefloor punch. It mixes up techno and house with plenty of booming baselines but also atmospheric tunes with a unique sense of mood that is utterly alluring even all these years later. This version comes on gatefold white and black marbled vinyl to make it a perfect collector's piece.

Review: Some of tech house's biggest names feature on this new Defected 12" alongside a trio of more contemporary talents. Butch & Nic Fanciulli are very much in the first category and they offer the happy hosue and big samples of 'I Want You' before new schooler Hannah Wants rolls out a chunky house groove with blissed out Ibiza vocal energy on 'The One' (feat Ara). Archie Hamilton pairs old school Chicago energy with a fresh vocal on the anthemic 'Let The Light In' (feat HQA) then Dutchman Ferreck Dawn shuts down with the crossover dance sounds of 'Better' (feat Jena).

Review: Following their collaboration in 2023 on Luke Solomon's Classic Music Company, Sophie Lloyd & Amy Douglas return with a remix package of the track 'Sweet Love', featuring the label boss himself. Luke's Always Love Revision of this modern disco anthem ups the ante, adding huge swathes of energy to the previously sensual record. The two-track package also features the 'Sweet Lovin' Mix', which capitalises on the raucous finale from the original 'Love Hangover Mix', making for a worthy mini-comp.

State Of Play (7:28)
Review: London-based beat smith K15 is a UK answer to the likes of Kyle Hall - his house music is steeped in jazz, soul and funk. His drums are dusty and loose - and louche - and his moods are deeply meaningful. His latest EP is another case in point with three more sublime and seductive sounds. 'Still Devoted' is a downtempo cut with analogue drums and gorgeous female vocals soaring up top with the elegance of a church choir. 'State Of Play' has a fantastically cosmic outlook and a nimble bassline that rides its own ride as the synths soar and 'Time Reveals' then closes down with a more melancholic but no less beautiful vibe.

Waiting For You (3:06)
Review: Sound Exhibitions is back with more of that irresistible old-school dancefloor heat that comes courtesy of this new EP from Jayl Funk. It comes on a limited edition red 7" but features some seriously big sounds. The opener 'Get On Ya Feet' has vamping chords and diva vocals with big glossy strings. It's a characterful and big-hearted cut for good-time fun. 'Waiting For You' is a different proposition - it's a more funky tune with horn-laced grooves and a characterful female vocal that gets flipped into an old school hip-hop verse with dusty breaks.

Review: As one of the leading lights in Norwegian techno with guts, heart and soul, Skatebard has long skirted scene recognition to simply focus on slipping out his own strain of wayward machine matter. Given his track record with Sex Tags Mania, it's no surprise he'd trust DJ Sotofett with access to his archives, and so Spektral has come together as an exploration of long-buried recordings from the early 00s, edited by Sotofett and wrestled into a digestible form for this record. Capturing the best aspects of freeform jamming while cutting everything into shape, there's an inherent dirtiness to these recordings which instantly tells you it comes from an honest place.

Review: After building up a nice head of steam with its first few releases, French label Groovence now starts a new series, Amour Deep, with volume number one. It's a various artists affair that kicks off with the deep and sensuous sounds of Moonee's 'Amour Deep' (feat Simple Request) which has swirling and romantic pads and a great r&b vocal sample. Milk & Honey picks up the pace with the more raw and bumpy 'Chi Train' and Armless Kid goes deep into an electro workout complete with bittersweet piano chords on 'Night Ride'. Roy Vision's 'What's Your Name' rounds out the release with a more glitchy and stripped-back house sound for the dub lovers.

Review: Deep house dons Frank & Tony keep on finding fresh new ground in their chosen genre. It's now Pacific Rhythm in Canada that welcomes them for this latest tasteful outing starting with the somnambulant sounds of 'Agitate' and its drawn-out and dreamy chords. The soporific sounds continue on 'Exiles' with its gentle grooves and starry-eyed piano chords and 'Just Like You' then layers up soft sonic pulses with fizzy synth smears in a way that soothes the soul. 'Back Home' is the final tasteful piece of this most sophisticated house puzzle.

Review: Class Compliance's brand of deep house is one embellished with plenty of details and synthetic sounds that sit nicely with the more cuddly depths of the drums. On this new 'Plug & Play' EP for Space Repetitions that is the case once more. The opening title cut is one that rides on smooth drums but has metal textures and sine synths detailing the grooves. 'Dreams' is more zoned out - the pads are soft focus and the drums are super soft around the edges, then 'Mosquito' has a more distorted and lo-fi edge with crunchy percussion and busted kicks.

Review: Mike Grant's Moods & Groves is one of Detroit's strongest deep house torchbearers and it has been for years. Raybone Jones has also been turning out the tunes for years but has kept a low-key profile while doing so. It's been a decade since his last outing on this label but that time hasn't diminished his skills: 'Detroit Driven (feat Bill Beaver)' is a dusty and ramshackle opening groove to get you in the mood and 'The Part We Dance' then layers up loopy broken beats and roughshod percussion with wispy pads that bring a future feel. 'Far From Over' brings some diffuse synth soul and jumbled percussive funk to another lush deep house excursion.

Review: Louie Vega remains a towering presence in house music 30+ years after making his early mark. As a solo artist, he deals in soulful, Latin-tinged and musical house sounds that are lavish in arrangement and often made with real instrumentals. The Vega boss now serves up a bumper collection of previously unreleased tunes across no fewer than ten sides of vinyl. There are collaborations, remixes, demos, dubs and reworks along the way and the range in impressive - from deep and triable joints to shuffling samba sounds and back again, this is a vital collection from a real house master.

Review: Over the summer Skepta was teasing hints of a forthcoming track which looks set to take his superstar status even further. Amy Winehouse's influence is still felt massively across the music world - the tragedy of her story collides with her natural talent to carry a huge amount of power and that's what Skepta's drawn on sampling 'Tears Dry On Their Own' from Winehouse's classic 2006 LP Back To Black. Strapping a vocal lick from the track to an anthemic deep house production, it's a focused club workout for the UK rapper, pressed up on yellow vinyl and billed as 'A Tribute To Amy'.

Review: Having already released a career-spanning retrospective, Twenty, Kraak and Smaak have decided to offer up this partner compilation - a collection of 'new and classic' remixes. As you'd expect given the depth and variety at the heart of their party-starting sound, the collected remixes touch on many sounds, styles and moods, from the head-nodding dancefloor soul of Moods remix of 'Squeeze Me', the revivalist P-funk-meets-neo-boogie colour of Jafunk's rub of 'UR Freak' and the horn-toting, Latin funk flex of the Allergies revision of 'Money in the Bag', to the dubby downtempo loveliness of Richard Dorfmeister's rework of 'Stumble', the woozy deep house lushness of Girls of the Internet's remix of 'Forgot About You', Psychemagik's deliciously cosmic re-wire of 'Corsica '80' and the acid house tweakery of Joe Goddard's interpretation of Romanthony hook-up 'Let's Go Back'

Review: France has always had a distinct time take on deep house ever since the 90s and greats like DJ Gregory, Alan Braxe and co. It remains a fertile scene, too, with several new artists and labels always coming through and the latest is Capybara which kicks off with this fresh new various artists EP. Sasha Pervukhin opens up with 'Oh No!' which brings jacked up drums and frazzled pads. Amadeo Savio then brings some nice acid mutations on 'Faces' and Varhat kicks off the flip with 'Alright' which is a loose, rickety house cut with balmy pads. It has its own distinctive twist and influences and some of those are explored on this new Voom Voom 12", which is just the second from this label. Next up is another house don, this time from Chicago: Specter can really go wild with his rhythms and raw textures as shown on EPs for Theo Parrish's label, but here he starts off with something soulful, dusty round the edges and deep. 'Putazo' then finds him embracing the occult with edgy and glassy synth lines zipping about more turbulent groves. 'Run The Course' is a grinding and mechanical groove of the sort he does so well, then 'Humble Pie' is all fizzing lo-fi synths and scuzzy drums patterns.
