Review: Rutilance strikes gold with this new Ep from DJ Steaw. Is there anyone out there right now making house music as visceral, sweaty and emotive as this man? Right form the off his 'Paradise 2020' gets the party going with its big balmy pads, flexing bassline and slinky drum work. 'What You Need' sinks into a nice succulent garage swing, with headier chords and female coos making for a sweet late night feel. Review: This one was already getting plenty of support and many plays before it even came out. And it's easy to see why, because both tunes are brilliantly atmospheric house cuts that offer more than just a nice groove. 'Memory By Flyway' (original Tribute mix) has a grainy, lived-in feel, with warm chords smeared over the bumping beats and a spoken word vocal adding extra depth. The Justin Spiritual Navigation mix reworks the drums into a more funky, skipping framework but keeps the vocal musings and adds some spiritual keys for a proper heady trip.

Review: Recently Norm Talley launched a new label, Upstairs Asylum, and delivered a much-needed sequel to his superb 2011 EP on Mixmode, Tracks From The Asylum. A decade on from the record's original release, he's finally got around to producing a sequel. The native Detroiter predictably starts in fine fashion via 'Gonna Luv U', a chunky and locked-in house number rich in groovy bass, bold piano motifs, ear-cathing sax riffs and colourful P-funk samples, before heading ultra-deep via the beatdown-influenced haziness of 'Detroit Dubz'. 'In Your Soulz' sees him add energy-packed hand percussion and chiming lead lines to a bustling deep house beat, while 'Digital XTC (Detroit Mix)' is a spacey, hypnotic workout that sounds like it was tailor-made for dark warehouses in the hours approaching dawn.

For its inaugural release, they have tapped two current heroes of the techno scene to present on each side of Reflection 1. Leeds' Al Bradley of 3AM Recordings is in fine form here, with the deep, down and dirty afterhours bounce of 'Pale Blue Dot' followed by the old school acid house swagger of 'In Flagrente Delicto'. On the flip are two more tracks, this time by Mancunian Scott Hallam of Axia Records who presents another serving of irresistible 303 wiggle on the glorious 'Kettle Crusader' followed by the high tech soul of 'Modern Senses' and its respectful nod to The Motor City.

Review: After a debut release that got plenty of people talking, Heels & Souls now serve up a reissue 12". It explores the work of Frankfurt's under the radar production trio Manfred Holz, Michael Buchner and Jurgen Blomke who work under two different names here. The EP is a real treasure trove of gold for deep diggers, with obscure synth and electro disco flavours on the 80s tinged ''Steal It An Deal It'.' It comes as two different versions and both are hugely characterful. 'Amazonia' that draws on dreamy Italo house and Balearic bliss bout beats for a new age trip that is first class.

Review: "Fresia Magdalena is about activism" says Berlin based Peruvian Sofia Kourtesis. It comes after a breakout 2020 that saw her get props as far and wide as The Observer and Mixmag as well as playing in NME's Top 100 list. She builds on that success with another EP that marks a big step up and features her singing properly on her own music for the first time. The sound sources here owe a lot to Peru, with jingling bells and rumbling bass, rich melodies and also explicit field recordings collected from around the city of Lima. Review: It's a case of old school meets new school on this fresh new slice of house from Defected. Representing the vets is the one and only Louie Vega, while in the contemporary corner are New York's finest, the Martinez Brothers. Marc E Bassy also pops up on vocals for this feel good deep house gem. His part sung, part rapped delivery comes over soul drenched beats and nice singing leads, which have long been a hallmark of the great Masters at Work man, Vega. A TMBLV mix is more pumping, Honey Dijon cuts loose on elastic bass and rugged rhythms and Dom Dolla offers a more energetic and main room version.

Opening things up, Mark Hand unfurls more of his exquisite, Rhodes-licked vibes, while Platform 001 offers up a more subliminal, stripped and bumping groove. G-Prod takes things into the distance with the pad-soaked dreamstate of 'Horizon', and Leo Gunn digs into something dusty and lounge-geared with the outstanding warm-up cut 'Aheeoo'.

Review: Fuse off shoot Locus now hits double figures having quickly served up 10 EPs of essential underground dynamite. It is fast rising Italian DJ and producer Dimmish who makes his debut here and does so with a thumping sense of house groove. 'Planet Zero' is both spaced out and driving at the same time, ten 'Hello Panic' brings high speed electronic funk and dynamic synth work before 'Stellar' layers up punchy, rubbery kicks and spinning hi hats that are all jazzy and party primed. Last of all 'Espresso' is a high speed and superbly slick deep tech classic.

Review: Every so often, a compilation comes along and delivers a snapshot of a city's underground music scene at a given moment in time. That's what compilers Rick Wilhite and Delano Smith have achieved with Parabellum Detroit, an expansive and predictably high-quality collection of cuts from some of the Motor City's finest producers. They naturally provide a couple of collaborative cuts of their own - the spacey, late-night techno hypnotism of '11 Minutes of Funk' and the intergalactic deep house drift of 'Neo Solaris', while there are also top-notch contributions from Javontte (the warm, soul-flecked deep house of 'Late Night Love'), Marcellus Pittman (beatdown chugger 'Everybody Party'), Gerald Mitchell AKA Soul Saver (the incredible 'Kaori'), the Moodymann Kenny Dixon Jr ( 'I'm Goin' Back') and Omar-S (a tidy Godson remix of 'VAT 69').

Review: It is remarkable to think that Detroit badman Omar S's star has in no way diminished since this record first came out in 2004. If anything, he is ever more legendary than ever right now. His style hasn't changed much over the years - he still favours rolling drums, smart samples and bright melodies - but somehow he continues to mine new moods and grooves within that. This one was particularly special, though - the tinny drums seem to root you to the groove but also float, the melodic hook is buried deep but brings a haunting vibe that never lets yup. And that's about it, but that is more than enough when each element makes such an indelible impact.

Review: The last few years have really seen Paul Woolford reach the top of his game in many different ways. Be it bowel emptying rave as Special Request, festival baiting piano house tunes or chart topping pop dance crossovers under his own name, the man is proving himself to have a real golden touch. He sure does crank out all these tunes at a prolific rate, too, but you still feel he does everything with meticulous precision. This DJ Kicks is a case in point. It touches on all the many different facets of his sound from glossy and feel good house to early Chicago classics, post-rave dreamscapes to brutal jungle breaks. What a legend.

Review: Sample-house maestro Nebraska (real name Alistair Gibbs) has released some of his most potent material of recent years on Friends & Relations, an imprint he established in 2016 in order to promote DJ tools, loop jams and future disco-house anthems. Your Love Is True, his first outing of 2021, is another excitable, peak-time ready gem. The standout is probably French Touch-style disco-house jam 'Your Love Is True', though the accompanying dub, which makes more of his superb percussion programming and douses many musical elements in pleasing amounts of delay, is our highlight. Over on the flip he showcases his stoned, downtempo side via the drowsy chords, trippy vocal samples and soft touch beats of 'Fuis', before brilliantly re-imagining it as an ultra-deep house workout on 'Espace Fuis'.

Review: Francis K remains a legend to this day and his music will always be well received whenever it is reissued. It was pioneering tackle back then and it remains a cut above the rest to this day. Here his FK EP is in the spotlight on Wave Music. It opens with the rapturous vocals of 'Hypnodelic' (feat Freddie Turner) before going for jacked up space beats on 'Mindspeak.' The duo serves up fine disco, funk, and afro fusions that take you from the terrace to the back room and then outside once more when the sun comes up. 'Yom Yom' (feat Soma Idrissu) is the warm and feel-good party starter, then 'Have You Seen My Lady' is more rooted to the floor with its heavy kicks, chants, and claps. Review: We were rather surprised to discover that Scheme marks Jenifa Mayanja's first 12" single since 2017, and her first release of any sort since her fine 2019 album 'Tales From Another Day'. Predictably, the long-serving deep house producer has once again hit the spot. Particularly potent is opener 'Averyday' [sic], a gloriously positive affair in which echo-laden organ sounds, elongated chords and her own quietly soulful vocalisations sit comfortably on dusty machine drums and a killer analogue bassline. Elsewhere, 'Under The Influence' is a chunkier slab of deep house full of cut-up vibraphone sounds and fuzzy synths, while 'Many Faces' is a pleasingly sub-heavy chunk of drowsy but energetic deep house goodness.

Review: European Carryall hits release number five with more superbly stylish techno. This time out they get a call from boss man Mr Telephones, who markedly ups the pace compared to his usual antics across a couple of fierce new weapons. 'Blue-Tek' (Raw Mix) opens up and despite the name is a mega slick and smooth, high speed fusion of Detroit and Balearic styles into something utterly breezy and compelling. The Dream Reprise is a little more airy and then 'FV555' (Arkanoid Dusk mix) gets more deep and heady on the flip. A Suenotechno reprise then heads off into the cosmos for late night dreaming.

Review: As if the first two volumes of the Dimensions series weren't enough, Steve O'Sullivan is back on Sushitech with a final Parallels addendum to the collaborative series. On this occasion, the double vinyl set is reserved for four special longform mixes which let the ideas roll out in a truly hypnotic style. Of course, that's exactly how Ricardo Villalobos likes it and 'Short Circuit' tangles up beautifully in a mesh of interlocking rhythmic hiccups and immersive pads. Thomas Melchior holds down a sweet sustained groove for O'Sullivan's illustrious melodics on 'The Shadow' before Dana Ruh helps strip things down even further on the murmuring 'Beneath The Surface'. Review: The fertile South African house scene keeps on giving rise to brand new goodness. Token is a label whose mission it is to bring such sounds to the wider world and this second EP is another winner. 'Stay' immediately gets you dreaming of warm climates and gorgeous sunsets before 'Set It' picks up the pace but keeps the pads warm and fuzzy and the bass elastic and deep. Review: Taking a moment to pause from their extensive exploration of Persian's illustrious archives, the Mysticisms lot turn their attention back to another fine exponent of UK dance music across the eras. Neil 'Nail' Tolliday had an incredible hit rate with his productions in the mid 90s, and he's since embarked on a mammoth resurgence over the past eight years which almost eclipses those seminal early days. After reissuing the classic Cassiopeia 12", Mysticisms hit up Tolliday for some unreleased gold which he dutifully served up in a blissed-out haze of winding synth lines and deep-digging drums. It comes on a little more wigged-out than you might expect from Nail, showing further insight into the formative years of one of the true stalwarts of UK house music.

Review: Detroit legend Eddie 'Flashin' Fowlkes has had a truly massive month with a couple of releases on his esteemed Detroit Wax imprint (which he runs with Niko Marks) and this week he kickstarts his City Boy imprint back into action. This is its first release in 11 years, presenting part one of the Knucklehead Series featuring a fine selection of moods and grooves. First up is the deep down and dirty tech-funk of '1-2-3', followed by the dusty twilight mood music of 'Hold Me Down' and over on the flip is the double 12's most energetic cut in the form of 'Test Unknown' - a sincere expression in proper Motor city style 'hi-tech soul'.

Review: Tallin's MIDA already got those in the know talking with its first EP, and now they come through with more interesting sounds. Ajukaja & Ats is a production duo form the same city and they have a swirling, synth heavy sound that traps your head amongst the stars. The drum breaks on 'Signal' are deft, sleeping you afloat next to a tight bass riff and those well sequenced synths. 'Swim' is all squelchy sounds, bright daubs and alien lifeforms over more busted beats and 'Lock' heads off on a cosmic adventure with jittery modulations, distorted and crunchy drums and smeared pads that bring a sense of serenity.

Review: A new offering on Bristol imprint Banoffee Pies this week, on which they have again tapped the elusive Gallegos following up some terrific releases on Holding Hands and Service Please. This is his second EP for the label since 2018. Said to be a nostalgic reflection of UK club culture, it features the oddball house gem 'Sentiment Of Love' on the first side, followed by the dusty acid house banger 'Put Me In'. Anyway, here are five more perfectly designed grooves that sink you into a warm, smoky basement and keep you there. Review: Platform 23 presents Ani-Roy, a project from friends Aniruddha Das and Gary "Roy" Stewart, who recorded two 12's of improvisational acid-house meets drone and samples in 1990.
They met over a love of principally reggae and post punk at Trent Polytechnic, Nottingham in 1982, and started combining equipment, to make tape loops and delays for exploring the basics of dub, all the while building their own Sound System.
This learning and experimenting converged their interests in early possibilities afforded for programming sounds and effects. They moved to London / Birmingham respectively and continued their collaboration until all things aligned in 1990. Coming together with Andrew Campbell, a community / social entrepreneur based in Nottingham - and with access to the Marcus Garvey Centre studios - they recorded two improvisational jams to 2 16 track; Ani arranging drum and bass lines, programming 'counter melodies' with a TB-303, and Roy looking after the ominous ambient loops, melodies, riot and Prince Far I samples.
The fact there were so many "versions" compelled Andrew to put the results out on two 12's instead of one. Fari 116 and Tilt were self-released on hand-stamped white labels.
Archival testaments, but set apart from the burgeoning acid house scene - here they are re-mastered and reissued some 30 years later by Platform 23.

Review: Aniruddha Das (DSPSSSSD) and Gary 'Roy' Stewart (Dubmorphology) have been collaborating since the mid '80s as Dubnoiz Coalition. While Das went on to acclaim as part of Asian Dub Foundation, Stewart is an experimental artist producing sound design and immersive works for the likes of Tate Museum. Back in 1990, they created some of their first tracks as Ani-Roy, mixing the early influences of acid house with their interest in drone and sound effects, the results being the improvised jams 'Tilt' and 'Fari 116'. They were pressed as very limited white labels, remastered and reissued some 30 years later here on Platform 23.

Review: As Toolroom only puts out a small percentage of their releases on vinyl, those given the wax treatment tend to be anthems in waiting. Martin Ikin's 'You', featuring some seriously loved-up, glassy-eyed lead vocals from Chenai, certainly sounds like a future classic. Shamelessly positive and life-affirming, 'You' is a turn-of-the-90s style piano house workout with added 21st century weight, a few disco-house style filters and a raw, stabbing bassline. The cheery vocal version (side A) comes back by a quite different Dub mix. This opts for a darker, chunkier big room sound - all wobbly riffs, pulsing electronic noises, cut up vocal snippets and mind-mangling motifs - that should delight all those who love Toolroom's trademark sound.

Review: You'll struggle to find any deeper or more alluring tracks in Norm Talley's catalogue than 'Powder', the wonderfully hypnotic, locked in and subtly spacey opener from the Motor City producer's 2011 EP on Mixmode, Tracks From The Asylum. It's a good thing, then, that Talley has decided to reissue the sought-after EP on his own label. The Detroiter doesn't put a foot wrong throughout, with the chugging, beatdown-inspired brilliance of 'Lost', which boasts some sublime piano solos, and the up-beat hustle of 'Private Party' being equally as essential as 'Powder'. Speaking of that track, Delano Smith's 'More Powder' version is also worth a listen, featuring as it does slightly bolder synth riffs and a tougher, techno-influenced groove.

Review: Anton ScruScru Bogomolov is a mega hyped artist but for good reason. His slew of singles have all been noteworthy and now this new 12" overflows with more brilliant ideas. After a hugely prolific 2020 he shows no signs of slowing down here. Once again he fuses classic jazz-funk style with fresh London broken beat and wall that is good about the current jazz scene. Blurring boundaries as he goes this could be as good in a live setting as it could through a big sound system in a club. Big chords, bristling drumming, disco energy, it's all here and then some.

Review: Red Ember Records main man Ewan Jansen may have been serving up dusty deep house and tactile dancefloor workouts since the late 1990s, but he's not released many full-length excursions. In fact, this outing Butter Sessions is his first longform release for nearly 16 years. It's a proper album, too, with the Perth-based producer using the opportunity to experiment with different rhythms, tempos and sounds whilst retaining his usual melodiousness and keen sense of atmosphere. Highlights include, but are in no way limited to, off-kilter opener 'Mussel Hustle', the acid-flecked, early morning dancefloor fever dream 'Kooka', the melodious electro sea breeze of 'Watertable' and the mid-80s Japanese synth-pop/electrofunk eccentricity of 'Proteus vs Yoshimitsu'.

Review: After All Is Well visited his friend Martin Iveson in his UK studio, the pair had lay down a few killer cuts, but the most standout of the lot was this one, which is sort of what it might sound like if Jean-Michel Jarre did Norwegian Cosmic disco. It's defined by the Korg Monopoly's weird paraphony and is rhythmically sustained by the Arp 2600 Bass line. Who else to remix but the legendary Prins Thomas, who layers in deep, funky bass, then Telephones explore the edges of the cosmos with a Subspace mix before a beatless version is also included.

Review: MOY has been whipping a very tasty strain of braindance over the past year across a number of labels such as AC Records, Batrachian and Exalt. These are surely bountiful times for warm, playful acid and tricksy electro, and this latest drop from the London-based artist on new label Emotec surely adds fuel to the fire. MOY's sound is rounded and self-assured, striding forth with the moody, breaks n' bleeps vibe of 'Dreamcoast' and bolstered by the emotional jack of 'Wheel Of Time'. 'Echolab' has a fatter, more polished finish to it, but once again the gnarly 101 and 303 lines are front and centre. 'Cyclotron' offers up something a little deeper to close the EP out, completing a beautifully rendered set of braindance dynamics.

As well as that, some of them are coming on 7", including 'Set It Up,' one of our personal favourites with its aching vocal sample and ice-cold beats. Review: We have no idea who Professor Balthazar is - probably not the lead character from the kids animated cartoon series of the same name, at least - but they sure know how to make good tunes. The opener here 'Twilo' is run through with some classic samples that bring warmth and soul to the effective house drums. On the flip of this hand-stamped 12" is a much more sweaty, peak time house track with snappy hits and kicks, a clipped vocal stab and increasingly bristling groove that cannot fail to sweep you up.

Review: Bristol party and label Just Jack welcome unsung Detroit hero in the form of Gari Romalis. He brings all the sounds you'd expect of a Motor City artist - depth, soul and warmth. 'Panic In Detroit' (Goos Life Mix) is a mid tempo jam that will warm up early evening floors. 'Final Fronteer' (Brain Block mix) is a deep and cuddly cut with hip swinging claps and splashy hi hats and last of all comes the best fo the lot, 'Hard Rain.' It has smooth drum loops that rock back and forth and draw you in beneath balmy cosmic pads and far-sighted sense of melancholy. This is tasteful, subtle dance music for the heads.

Bill Beaver is a Sound Signature and Mahogany Music alumnus, Darren Abrams wrote the classic 'Loose Piano' on Third Ear Recordings and Darryl Tis is the third piece of the puzzle. This EP features a repress of 'Its The Life,' a forgotten classic from the D that first came in 2002 and now costs a small fortune on Discogs. Review: Fatima Yamaha is one of several aliases used by Dutch musician and producer Bas Bron, who is best known for the anthemic 'What's Girl To Do'. but who has so much more in his locker. This album proves that. It was recorded over a five year period after his 2015 album Imaginary Lines and draws together electro, p-funk, Detroit techno, Chicago house and plenty of in between styles. 'Drops In The Ocean' is a fantastic opener with potential to become another huge hit while the mix of hooky vocals and melodies with underground beats pervade tracks like 'Day We Met' amongst other highlights.

Review: Uk label Toolroom has become one of the most prominent in the world and a real entry point into dance music for younger ears. Mark Knight has worked tirelessly to make that happen and now he's been busy in the studio cooking up a cross over hit with horns desired to be heard on the most sun kissed dance floor's this summer. It's got plenty of well known samples, rolling drum beats and diva vocals that will have you emptying your lungs. The Danny Howard remix is a little more tense and late night for when the sun drops and things get more heads down.

Rallying round in support of World Mental Health Day 2020, Shanti Celeste kicks the record off in style with the rapid fire, deep-diving workout 'Fantasma'. OCB keeps the pressure up with the psychotropic techno of 'RS3', while Michelle works up some delightfully freaky synths on playful jacker 'Aesthetic'. Bobby's 'Free Your Mind' is a 90s-tinged, full fat techno production indebted to Detroit, Peder Mannerfelt keeps things stripped and raw on 'Our Levels' and Yu Su weaves a beautiful tapestry of interweaving rhythms on 'Brittney'. Adam Pits' trippy techno sounds resplendent on 'Wind Tunnel' and DJ Sports completes the set with the inventive, dembow slanted funk of 'Needs Dub'.

Review: New York label and party Mister Saturday always brings roughed up, raw and steamy house grooves. This new one is no exception to that unwritten rule and it comes from Russell El Butler who serves up four platters that matter. 'Blah Blah' is a brilliantly brainless house romp with vocal loops and distorted kicks making you march. 'Kruymska' is more tight and taught thanks to the pinging kick drums and molten melodies up top, while 'Tout Va Bien' is a late night cut that glistens thanks to its prickly bass and razor sharp hats. 'Alone At Pisecka 12' closes out in malfunctioning fashion to round out a wide-ranging EP.

Review: Munich's Public Possession label returns with an lovely EP by new London-based outfit Birthday. The pop duo was founded in 2016 by RIP Swirl & Fake Laugh. Having had some great feedback on their first releases, they took a break to focus on their solo projects and other endeavours in and around the music industry, but make their comeback on Powerhouse. With the sweet as candy ditties like "Slug", to hazy and vaporised drifters like 'Locally Lost' or moments of sublime weirdo humour as heard on 'Chocolate For Breakfast' this could well be the most awesome comedown album of 2020.
