  1. G-Capsule (6:27)

  3. Playhead (6:21)
  4. Los Amigos (vinyl only) (6:30)
Review: Tomoki Tamura's Holic Trax label has been nurturing Tuccillo among its many regular artists over the years, and now the Italian wonderkid returns with another distinctive run of jams from the wild side of deep house. There's a psychedelic quality to the rich textures that vibrate throughout "G-Capsule", while "Pierrot" keeps things lean and limber with some minimal percussion and a cheeky bassline that will work wonders in the mix. "Playhead" takes old skool New York house into a modernist mindset, and then "Los Amigos" finishes off in a more sensual celebration of unconventional house music.

These Drops Are Giving Me A Breakdown EP
Cat: HUDD 055. Rel: 06 Feb 17
  1. My Heart (feat Astral T) (6:43)
  2. High In The Evergreens (5:36)
  3. Yes In This Way (6:28)
  4. My Business Ain't Your Business (6:36)
Review: The Rhythm Plate posse are certainly no strangers to Hudd Traxx, and so it makes perfect sense to see their Goshawk project landing on the long-serving Northern deep house label. The vibes are impeccable on this 12" from start to finish, not least with the soulful sway of "My Heart" bolstered by Astral T's vocals. "High In The Evergreens" meanwhile takes a woozy approach to straight up house music with its dreamy synth tones, and "Yes In This Way" turns up the pressure with a killer bassline and feverish gospel preacher vocal hooks. "My Business Ain't Your Business" takes a more laid back, choppy approach to the groove without losing any of that all important soul.

  1. Cycle Psycho (6:54)

  3. Smoke And Flesh (6:36)
  4. Flying Sausage (7:02)
Review: Slum Science's Hudd Traxx is a label that just won't quit when it comes to proper, head-tripping house music for those who like their grooves serious. That makes Chris Carrier a natural participant, and the unstoppable Frenchman steps up here with a record that proves both his and the label's long-lasting appeal. "Cycle Psycho" is a simmering tech house belter with the requisite amount of funk rubbed into its limbs, while "Dimension 5" switches stance for a nagging acid workout. On the flip "Smoke And Flesh" brings a tougher thrust to the drums and then "Flying Sausage" cools the EP down with a simply fantastic deep house bump to get heads nodding all over the butchers shop.

Cat: VR 005. Rel: 06 Aug 18
  1. Her Blissful Solitude
  2. Common Places
  3. Radiating Soul
  4. Her Nocturnal Note
Review: Verdant Recordings continues its quest to provide a space for lesser-known artists exploring the deepest pockets of electronic music, not least around the 4/4 axis. Next up on the label is the first public appearance from Interjection, a London-based artist who has been cooking up an immersive sound for some time. "Her Blissful Solitude" is a smoky deep house cut that drifts through heavy clouds of pads, while "Common Places" drops some brittle electro rhythms into the mix without lifting the veil of ambience. "Radiating Soul" has an equally intricate set of rhythms at work, with extra notes of 303 sprinkled over the top, and "Her Nocturnal Note" finishes the EP off with a shimmering trip out to complement the A1.

  5. Colin Johnson - "Frog Pond" (Couch mix)
  6. Paolo Rocco X Lessi S - "I Know I Know"
  7. Ron Obvious - "Private Image"
  8. Joe Rolét - "Blue Marble"
  9. Nat Wendell - "Depth"
Review: Courtesy Of Balance continues to preach the gospel laid out by Balance, the legendary deep house label, with that deep diving, shimmering sound that Ron Trent and Chez Damier made their own. The heady fumes of "Morning Factory" can be felt lingering in The Black Tone's dubby workout "Dialect", while Pascal Viscardi takes things into spaced out minimal house territory on "Skylab". Homepark strips things down even more before Bell Boys comes back with a deep take on the classic Chicago jack sound. Colin Johnson keeps things swinging and funky on "Frog Pond", Paolo Rocco and Lessi S steps the garage shuffle up even more with "I Know I Know" and Ron Obvious pushes even further into tripped out 2-step territory for those that like their garage deep and meditative. Joe Rolet brings a dusty drum roll and spaced out textures to "Blue Marble", and Nat Wendell finishes this expansive double pack off with the mellow thrum of "Depth".

Review: There's little revolutionary about Galcher Lustwerk's third album in as many years, but it could well be his best collection of work to date. Riffing on the deep, off kilter and pleasingly woozy trademark sound he's developed since making his vinyl debut in 2013, "Information" is the kind of set that sounds equally as good at home or on the bus as it does surging from oversized club soundsystems in a converted Brooklyn loft. It's full to bursting with evocative early morning deep house, of course, but it never slips into "overly polite" territory due to the New York producer's love of dusty, crunchy drum machine hits, and bass guitar parts so warm and toasty you could probably use them to toast waffles.

Marvin (7")
Cat: BB 45006. Rel: 06 May 20
  1. Marvin (Casey Mistake mix) (5:02)
  2. Marvin (dub That Got Away) (5:05)
Review: Having previously worked his magic on classic cuts from Diana Ross, Luther Vandross and Teddy Pendergrass - among others - Bridge Boots boss Caserta has now moved on to Marvin Gaye. He's grabbed the acapella from a classic song - in this case one of Gaye's duets with Diana Ross, "My Mistake (Was To Love You)"- and incorporated it into a brand new track. The A-side "Casey Mistake Mix" sits somewhere between early '80s boogie and the mid-80s proto-house sound created by Boyd Jarvis, Timmy Regisford and Paul Simpson. Interestingly, Gaye and Ross's vocals fit it like a glove. The flipside "Dub That Got Away" is an altogether more bumpin' garage-house workout rich in cut-up vocals snippets and wobbly analogue bass.

  6. Brudan In Leeds (7:34)
  7. Hazy Groove (8:00)
  8. Pickney (5:20)
Review: Brawther makes his long playing debut on his new label Negentropy, and the long serving French house producer has never sounded freer in his vision of electronic music. "Flow" is a gorgeous ambient opener to the album, setting the scene for the immersive, mellow house tones of "Another Dub." "Theme From The Dungeon" switches stance again for a hip hop tempo, while Javonnte comes on board to deliver a soulful vocal over the broken beat lilt of "I Can't Explain." "Jaxx Freaxx" brings things back to a dancefloor focus, which "Brudan In Leeds" builds upon with an easy deep house tone that should satisfy Brawther's long time fans. "Hazy Groove" is a laid back minimal house roller, and then "Pickney" closes the album out with an even more stripped back workout for the later hours of the party.

Monthly dispatches designed to do nothing but tickle, tease and thrills dancefloors, each one of his edits took on lives of their own with heaps of additional musicianship and groovecraft. These two Soul II Soul edits say it all... "Back To Life" gets a powerful tease on the pay-off while "African Dance" gets brand new drums and a whole new boogie section. Damaging.

  4. Keep Coming (Brenk Sinatra remix) (4:23)
Review: Some 18 months after it appeared on Amp Fiddler's ace "Amp Dog Knights" LP, "Keep Coming" is given the remix treatment by a quartet of hugely talented producers. The headline rework comes from Ninja Tune signee Jayda G, whose effortlessly soulful version not only makes great use of the Detroit veteran's brilliant vocals and keys, but also flits between smoky deep house and sweaty, percussive madness. Elsewhere, Jahn Cloud and Meftah offer up some sweet post R&B beats, Julian Dyne re-casts it as a Latin-tinged chunk of beatdown brilliance and Brenk Sinatra does his best impression of Motor City beat-makers Platinum Pied Pipers.

Review: Bristol's Banoffee Pies are back with their 11th edition. But as far it goes musically: this certainty ain't Bristol! Starting out with the smoothly reduced tendencies of local lad Christian Jay's "Rhotic" which sounds inspired by the sounds of Trelik, there's more of the same (albeit much dubbier and smoked out) on "Starry Nite Life" courtesy of Utrecht's Larry de Kat; very paranoid afterhour vibes on this one! On the flip we've got some more dubbed out fare courtesy of Christian Jay, again, who enlists a bit of help from Crump on the rusty and dust coated "GG3". All Caps artist Florist adds a touch of Vancouver to proceedings with the squelchy DJ tool "Blacky."

Review: D3 Elements continues to mine the fertile soil of Midwest inspired house, techno and electro with this fantastic new album from Michael Dykehouse (sometimes found turning out experimental fare on Planet Mu and Ghostly). Here the grooves are immediate and engaging across nine tracks, from the bubbly "Meltdown Morning" to the spooked-out "Clock Division", touching on a range of styles all bound together by a commitment to classic drum machine beats and synthesiser tones. This is far from a throwback record though, instead celebrating Dykehouse's innate musicality through all manner of tempos and moods and coming out as a well-rounded long player in the process.

  3. When We Kiss (6:13)
  4. State Of Nature (7:13)
Review: Newcomer JVXTA has been spotted previously on his own label Hardmatter, but you wouldn't think it's early days for the UK producer listening to the assured NY house flex of his guaranteed dancefloor bomb "Brawn." It also stand to reason that promising new Big Apple house label Homage have reached out across the Atlantic to make a fruitful connection, resulting in a crucial grip of contemporary house jams with classic touches in all the right places. As well as the garage swing of "Brawn" there's uptempo strutting aplenty to be had with "Rudy's Disc 31," while "When We Kiss" takes things in a sweeter, deeper direction. "State Of Nature" throws down tribal percussion and woozy synths for a heady track that contrasts neatly with the other more upfront offerings.

Review: Vienna in da House! The latest release from Intimate Friends invites Viennese producer par excellence Roman Rauch into the fold for the Essig Jazz EP. Straight from the home of the Wiener schnitzel, Roman is of course known for almost a dozen releases on labels like Endless Flight, Philpot and Quintessentials. The Austrian is on fine fettle here with three twisted and rolling productions; the spoken word delivery from Caits Meissner on "Got To Be" is something of a highlight as is the wonderfully messed up remix of the title track from Glenn Astro.

Review: Given the hype surrounding HNNY over the last few years - fuelled, primarily, by a string of celebrated singles on Puss, Local Talk, Let's Play House and YUMMY - it's somewhat surprising that Sunday marks his first foray into the album market. Wisely, the Swedish artist embraced the opportunity for eclecticism that the format provides, filling his debut full-length with a mix of tracks variously designed for sofa-bound listening and dancing in clubs. There's a jazz-flecked beauty to the crackly downtempo grooves offered up by the title track, while the dreamy, guitar-laced head-nodder "Sylvia" recalls the best of his Balearic-influenced work. It's these luscious moments, such as the twinkling ambience of closer "My Baby", that really resonate.

  4. Jiletta Riley - "The Way It Was" (Marquis Hawkes Classic club vocal) (6:57)
Review: There's little better, house-wise at least, than vintage Kerri Chandler productions, though these fresh remixes of tracks by the New York maestro would certainly run them close. German producer Henrik Schwarz steps up first to re-imagine Chandler and Jerome Sydenham's "Powder" as a fluid but hypnotic chunk of building, synthesizer-heavy house in his usual melodic, tech-tinged style, before D'Julz turns in a wonderfully warm, locked-in revision of "Peace of Mind" full of drum machine handclaps, woozy chords and fizzing electronics. Over on side B you'll find a superb Kettama Garage mix of Lafayette's Chandler-produced classic "Better Late Than Never" - think late '90s UK speed garage and you're close - as well as a partoculalry reverential take on Jiletta Riley jam "The Way It Was" by Marquis Hawkes.

  4. Boom House (5:47)
Review: Congratulations to Brian "Javonntte" Garrett, who this year celebrates two decades releasing mind-expanding deep house gold. His first 12" of 2018 sees him pop up on People Of Earth, a label that has previously delivered EPs from such scene stalwarts as Rick Wade, Patrice Scott and Kai Alce. Fittingly, Garrett is in a nostalgic mood on opener "Way Back", where his deep, dreamy and soul-flecked deep house groove is accompanied by a spoken word vocal reminiscing about the mid 1990s. Elsewhere, "Zodiac" wraps starbust motifs around a chunky, bass-heavy groove, "House Joint" is a bumpin' box jam rich in sturdy drum machine hits and swirling chords, and "Boom House" is a slightly tougher workout that boasts beats worthy of Derrick Carter or DJ Sneak.

Following up that great split EP he put out last year with Steve Huerta, Sable will have you mesmerised by these 3 solid cuts beginning with the infectious "All Night, All Right!" with its woozy chords, boompty bass and sexy saxophone all working their magic over clipped and swinging beats. Review: Through a wide selection of releases on his own UnXpozd Entertainment, DJ Aakmael has truly established his place within the house scene, and his own sound, too. The man deals in a very specific sort of deep house filled with jazzy elements, much like the one championed by the likes of Fred P or Patrice Scott. Here, on the People Earth imprint, we are graced by the deep and chimerical synth work of "Izza" on the A-side, while "Untitled 116" on the back of the wax contains an air of disco, but one that's been warped and messed with good and proper; "Spreadsmoluv" is a heads-down house lover with an insanely hummable vocal flex. YES.

Review: This mini-album marks a shift in emphasis for Lustwerk Music, with boss Galcher Lustwerk choosing to showcase the work of another producer for the first time. He's apparently been nurturing Florida-based Quavius for some time, encouraging the young producer to "experiment more" while following his instincts. It seems to have worked, because the majority of music on this debut release is top notch. It covers a lot of ground, with the A-side alone moving between R&B-inspired hip-house ("Love The Way"), hip-hop ("Magic Man"), woozy electronica ("R 'n' V") and spacey deep house ("Composure"). There's naturally plenty more to enjoy on the flipside, too, from the old school deep hip-hop bump of "M 320", to the crunk-tinged, cut-up goodness of closer "Can I Be".

Review: Berlin dwelling Los Angeleno Urulu is back on another EP chock full off smooth deep house grooves after releases on Exploited, Dirt Crew and Let's Play House. "Night Tube" is rolling late night business with rusty rhythms and some serious rumble in the bass. "Orion" is a real highlight on this release; the kind of sultry, summery and feel-good house music reminiscent of John Beltran's excursions in house music. On the flip is the rusty retro business of "9045XY " which is pretty nice and closing things out with another Beltran influenced number on the emotive high-tech soul of "Lullaby".

Having previously charmed the likes of Deep Explorer and Eargasmic, the debut Bjak album now lands on sympathetic Swiss outpost deepArtSounds, where Cullen will be keeping fine company with the likes of Ron Trent, Above Smoke, Trinidadian Deep and many more. It's a sumptuous listen overflowing with buttery keys, smoky trumpets and expressive, organic rhythms to get all true-school deep house heads nodding with approval. There's a rough n' ready MPC vibe to the break that courses its way through "The Guitar," providing a sturdy basis for the noodling titular axe cartwheeling its way across the mix. After those slightly Balearic vibes, "The Vocoder" brings a more forthright floor-filling attitude to the record thanks to a classic sizzling disco hook and a relentless forwards momentum. It's Nebraska on impeccable form, bringing the heat and stirring the soul in equal measure.

Review: Quavius finally follows up on his self-titled debut LP for Lustwerk Music three years later, and it's worth the wait. As you'd expect of an artist snapped up by the close-knit crew Galcher Lustwerk orbits, there's a hazy, dreamlike mood lingering over all the tracks on "Find Ready", but there's plenty of variety taking place within that context. "Heaven Is In You" is as peppy as it is spaced out, while "Let It Rock" lays down a melancholic synth twist on trap. There's spacey acid, dusty, mechanical house and plenty more besides. Fun, varied and drawing on an angle that's all his own, Quavius has more than delivered on the promise of his first record.

Review: Nebraska's Friends & Relations series continues to deliver the goods as another no nonsense slab of sample-a-delic house delights lands on our platters. There is a fine balance struck between familiarity and obscurity on these edit-esque productions, where you might well recognise the odd break or sample, but Nebraska applies a deft touch to keep things mysterious and fresh. There is funk spilling out of the grooves like you wouldn't believe, from rugged basslines to heavy vibing keys, with splashes of dub FX and a little cosmic dust sprinkled on top for good measure. Heads down business for serious dancers, and the DJs that love to keep them locked in.

  3. Of Yesterday (instrumental) (5:37)
  4. The Ultimate Which Manages The World (4:40)
  5. Words Without Sound (6:09)
Review: With a drowsy, loved-up trademark sound that sits somewhere between the beach, bedroom and the dancefloor, Canada's Yu Su is a great fit for Music From Memory offshoot Second Circle. The resultant EP is arguably her strongest to date. She begins by enlisting the help of Michelle Helene Mackenzie, who provides a drowsy spoken word vocal on the ultra-deep and starry brilliance of "Little Birds, Moonbath". Fellow Vancouver residents Pender Street Steppers lend a hand on the deep and picturesque shuffle of "Tipu's Tiger", while "Of Yesterday (Instrumental)" sees Yu Su wrap meandering synth solos atop hazy chords and gentle tribal drums. Elsewhere, "The Ultimate Which Manages The World" is dubbed-out and effortlessly Balearic, while "Words Without Sound" offers up more intricate hand percussion and some sparse electronic elements.

To The People Part 2
Cat: POEM 011. Rel: 02 Sep 19
  1. Never Give Up (7:35)
  2. Seen At Night (5:23)
  3. Forever Alone (5:26)
  4. Rooftop (7:01)
Review: The peeps behind the People Of Earth label claim that Rick Wade is on top form on their latest release. While that's undoubtedly true, the Detroiter has incredibly high standards and rarely puts out anything mediocre. The four tracks here are all deliciously deep and fluid, with the Fender Rhodes solos, meandering organ lines, warm bass and chunky beats of "Never Give Up" delivering just the right blend of instrumental goodness and dancefloor-ready weightiness. "Seen At Night" is an even deeper and hazier treat, while "Forever Alone" sees Wade wrap bongo-laden beats and eyes-closed electric piano chords around a ludicrously warm and heavy bassline. Solo-laden closing cut "Rooftop" is also superb - a proper sundown selection of the highest calibre.

  4. Building Myth (7:00)
  5. Once Upon A Time (2:10)
  6. Longing (Allstarr Motomusic remix) (5:58)
Review: The deepArtSounds label welcome the mighty Jenifa Mayanja to their label to bring some East Coast deepness to a label with a strong track record in the house domain. Mayanja is captivating on "Submission", a balmy trip as playful as it is restrained. "Longing" brings in a distinct soul focus, with gorgeous vocals and tinkling keys swirling in the mix together. "Chase The Darkness" shakes things up with crooked percussion and a catchy lead. "Building Myth" kicks the B-side off in truly spiritual fashion, riding a drum roll to die for and peppering the track with splashes of horns and an inspiring speech. "Once Upon A Time" cools things down with a spaced out downtempo offering, setting the scene perfectly for Allstarr Motomusic to create a sublime deep techno version of "Longing".

  4. Benefit (Kai Alce dub mix) (6:15)
Review: Second time around for "Benefit", a breezy and soulful song by UK soul scene stalwart Omar that originally appeared on Boddhi Satva's 2015 album "Transition". This time round, the mixes come from deep house royalty Alton Miller and Kai Alce. The former handles the A-side, delivering a wonderfully warm, intricately produced extended rework that sees Omar's incredible vocal rise above bouncy Afro-house drums, darting synth bass, rich chords and all manner of subtle instrumental flourishes. Kai Alce provides both vocal and instrumental mixes on the flip, opting for booming bass, swinging, garage-influenced drums and some suitably old school organ riffs.

  4. Clearfix (6:56)
Review: Silver Network has been a constant source of quality deep house with feeling since Jef K and Tony Silver fired it up in Paris in the late 90s. Andrade is just the cat to get in on the action, having been spotted on other esteemed French labels like Karat in the past. "Float Left" is a psychotropic jam pinging all kinds of strange FX, piano flourishes and subby bass around the jacking beat, and it's offset by the lounge-minded but no less inventive tones of "Float Right". Sakro comes on board for a remix of "Float Left' that taps up chunky, funky 90s house, and then "Clearfix" finishes the record off with a heads down dancefloor workout for the later hours of the session.

Down Off Cooper (incl. Lance DeSardi & CLE remixes)
  1. Down Off Cooper
  2. Where's City Boy?
  3. Down Off Cooper (Lance DeSardi & Cle remix)
Review: For Legwork's first outing, we've recruited a seminal techno-soul producer from Dallas, Texas, who prefers to stay in the shadows, remaining nameless(ish). That said, anyone who's serious about Detroit techno know's his work on Matrix, Down Low, and most receintly Delsin. On Remix duty are fellow Dallas alumnus Lance DeSardi, head honcho at Legwork, and DJ Cle, the hardest massaging man in house music.
A1. Down Off Cooper If this bassline doesn't hook you, check your pulse. Add some twisting and sliding pads to relentless machine-funked rhythms, and Robert's your mother's brother.
A2: Where's Cityboy? The perfect complimentary tune to Down Off Cooper, this one's slightly deeper, while still keeping the drum patterns moving and bass rumbling enough for the most discerning of dance floors.
B1: Down Off Cooper (Lance De Sardi & Cle Remix) Lance & Cle take Down Off Cooper to a more House-oriented dimension, never losing the techno soul of the original. The extra vocal snippet reminescent of classic M.A.W. dubs or Global Communication shoots this one into space.

Review: Dusky's 17 Steps imprint has literally been on fire since its first release back in 2014, and not only have the production duo put out a whole heap of their own material, they've A&R'd tings to perfection in terms of spotting new and old talent to fit in line with his tone of voice. This is the first instalment of the new Floor To Floor Sampler series, and in order of appearance we have: Velvit's "Looking Glass", a phenomenal house banger with a techno mindset; "Mount Belzoni" by Dusky, an elastic tech-house cut with a penetrating percussion; the sweaty, muddy chugger "Tooth Decay" by Christian Piers; UK techno luminary Trevino ends things all helter-skelter with the cut-throat groove of "Ojak". Solid.

Review: Rhythm Plate's Goshawk project is the best thing to come out of Matlock Bath since the opening of child-friendly theme park Gulliver's Kingdom in 1978. Here the veteran East Midlands house duo pitches up on Bristol imprint Boogie Cafe, enlists the services of Erik Rico's honeyed tonsils and serves up "Piano" and "Percussion" variants of the rather fine "Home". It's the former versions that reside on the A, with the vocal and Dub variations both making great use of an elastic, rubbery rhythm, jaunty piano riffs and occasional organs. As the title suggests, the "Percussion" versions boast tons of additional drum hits, though it's the smart, old school U.S garage vibe that's really getting our blood pumping.

  2. Give Me A Reason (Michael Mayer Does The Amoeba remix) (6:54)
  3. Give Me A Reason (Weatherall Meets Jonnie Two Heaters Uptown - part 1) (9:42)
Review: After Australian band Jagwar Mar released their album entitled Every Now & Then in 2016, they now appear with an accompanying remix release for their fans. Under the direction of mastermind Jono Mar, the album was created after three years of intense worldwide touring, supporting such bands as The XX, Foals and Tame Impala. It fulfilled all the expectations of their 2013 debut Howlin'. "Ordinary" (Rebolledo Very Ordinary cut) is far from the description: this one's a great shuffling little number, with no shortage of laser zaps. "Give Me A Reason" (Michael Mayer Does The Amoeba remix) is without a doubt the real winner on here, where the Kompakt main man serves up another sublime and emotive exercise in life affirming dancefloor drama. On the flip, "Give Me A Reason" (Weatherall Meets Jonnie Two Heaters Uptown - part 1) sees the UK dance veteran deliver a lo-slung and definitely slo-mo take on acid-indie dance, as best as you'd expect from the man.

Review: Miles Sagnia has a deep-rooted backstory in the UK underground techno scene. Under his own name and as Miles Atmospheric he's produced consistently compelling techno for labels like Finale Sessions, FireScope, Aesthetic Audio and Applied Rhythmic Technology. Such associations point to the soundworld Sagnia inhabits - a harmonically balanced strain of deep-diving brain food that favours expressive musicality and inventive programming over rigid functionality. Having previously appeared as Miles Sagnia on Ornate back in 2010, he returns to the label as Miles Atmospheric with three cuts that explore melancholic moods through artful interplay between beautifully rendered synth tones and intricate drum machine excursions. These tracks still move with purpose and presence, but the end goal is more cerebral than physical - a perfect fit for the immersive experiences Ornate has always strived to promote.
