  1. Education
  2. My Cave
  3. Jammin (feat Jus-Ed)
  4. Interupt (dub)
Review: Continuing the vinyl issue of Dana Ruh's debut LP, the high grade deep house just keeps coming on Naturally Part 2. "Education" keeps the energy levels up with some neat interplay between a bubbling, acidic bassline and soulful chord flourishes, all over a snappy 4/4 beat. "My Cave" deviates into more tripped-out broken beat business, all the while anchored by the most soothing of deep house chords. "Jammin" features Underground Quality label boss Jus Ed laying down some subtle vocal contributions which echo out over a smart spread of tones, before "D's Interupt (Dub)" displays the more experimental side to Ruh's output with an abstract beatless loop surrounded by gentle applications of texture.

Review: In the 11 years since he made his debut on a split 12" of techno productions, Melchior Sultana has developed into a fine producer of smoky, evocative deep house. Here, he more than proves that point, returning to Jus-Ed's Underground Quality imprint with his fourth solo full length. Seemingly inspired by his Maltese roots, Mediterran is chock full of the kind of warm, mature, impeccably produced deep house that sounds like it was designed to soundtrack dusky St Julian's sunsets and baking hot afternoons amidst the ancient walls of Valetta. There are nods towards the bluesy jazz-house of St Germain (see "One Take"), classic Balearic deep house ("Paradise") and the emotion-rich grooves of Jus-Ed ("Lead The Way"), with the overall feel being lazy, relaxed and groovy.

Review: Longstanding Detroit deepsmith Kage returns on his brand new label Michigander. The result? Three superlative exercises in synth soul and an on-point version for later hours. "The Arc" prowls with all the string-soaked majesty of an early Rolando cut while the stringless version hits a little harder. "D Drive" jacks with a slappy bass groove while tipping a slight nod to Yazoo with its vibrant riffy ripples while "Transcending" is all about the big dubby synth washes and off-kick bass palpitations. Let's hope there'll be more to gander from Michigander very soon.

  4. What Kind Of Sandwich Is This? (4:11)
Review: Hyped Barcelona DJ/producer and '90s U.S sitcom fan DJ Seinfeld is in the midst of a rich vein of form, with recent EPs on Lobster Fury and Endotherm only enhancing his rising reputation. This collection of analogue-rich, alien techno workouts on Natural Sciences is, predictably, also rather good. There's a pleasing looseness to the clattering drum machine hits, thrusting analogue bass, psychedelic electronics and cut-up vocal samples of "Vaping Lyf", while "Ruff Hysteria" sounds like late '80s Chicago deep house crossed with the fluttering, head-in-the-clouds innocence of early '90s ambient techno. On the flip you'll find the drowsy chords, hustling machine drums and wonky vocal samples of "Wombat Bounce" and the roughneck, hardcore style cut-up drum breaks and saucer-eyed chords of "What Kind of Sandwich Is This?"

  1. Sweet Florence (7:52)
  2. Emotion (3:53)
  3. Sweet Florence (Kuniyuki edit) (9:25)
Review: Amongst those who dig for interesting, dancefloor-friendly electronic music from the early 1980s, Jacob Desvarieux's eponymous 1983 debut album is highly rated. It brilliantly joined the dots between zouk, boogie and beatbox electro, with all manner of other influences - reggae, most famously - being stirred into the producer's melting pot. Here, Endless Flight have licensed two of those tracks - the reggae-boogie brilliance of "Emotion", which includes subtle nods to a couple of disco classics, and the electro-zouk madness of "Sweet Florence" - and pressed them on a weighty 12" single. The latter track is given the re-edit treatment by Kuniyuki, who makes more of the layered guitar and organ solos, the original's wavy female vocals, and the killer original electro groove.

Review: Finn Casey and Thomas L aka Silk 86 team up with Blamma! Blamma! which coincidentally features Casey in conjunction with Brooklynite Nick DC and they all run new imprint Emotive together: this being their third release for the imprint. "Your Lovin" is a loopy disco edit sure to make them work up a sweat on the dancefloor with its funky bassline and sexy vocals. On the flip, "That Flow" follows in suit, going deeper into the night with its wild sax solo, life affirming dialogue and all round strong groove.

Review: It's been a whirlwind 12 months for DJ Seinfeld, who has gone from "unknown entity" to hyped producer in what seems like the blink of an eye. There's little doubt that this debut album on Lobster Fury will simply enhance his credentials further. It's a typically dusty and lo-fi affair, but far more positive in tone than your average crackly techno full-length. The Swedish producer makes extensive use of rubbery synth basslines, hazy R&B and pop vocal samples and the kind of production tricks more frequently found on disco-house and old US garage records (while, naturally, rarely sounding exactly like either style). In other words, the album is full of attractive, floor-friendly party techno for those who like their cuts fun and funky, rather than stern and severe.

  1. Reckless Ending (Tribute To GU) (6:54)
  2. Out The Gate (7:00)
Review: Boo Williams may release far less music than he once did, but every 12" he releases retains the same high quality threshold that has long marked out the Chicagoan's work. This two-tracker is a brilliant example. Both tracks are ear pleasing, musically rich and dancefloor focused, offering a near perfect balance between club-ready grunt and emotion-rich tunefulness. A-side "Out of the Gate" sets the tone, with Williams' layering chiming melodies lines and dreamy chord progressions atop a near techno tempo, bass-heavy house groove. On the B-side, he pays tribute to long time pal and occasional studio buddy Glenn Underground via the tumbling synthesizer chords, bubby acid lines, melancholic flourishes and jacking drums of "Reckless Ending".

  1. Is This Really A Party? (7:46)
  2. Grandgousier (5:56)
Review: Publicity-shy Parisian Pepe Bradock is more than worthy of his cult status. Even so, it would be nice of him to give a bit of warning when he's about to drop a new 12". Exodus 8, his first outing of 2018, pretty much turned up with no prior warning. A-side "Is This Really A Party?" is, somewhat surprisingly, a much more straight-forward dancefloor track than we've come to expect. Although there are plenty of weird jazz samples and straight noises, the sludgy, bass-heavy rhythm track tips a wink to his lauded, turn-of-the-millennium deep house workouts. Flipside "Grandgousier" boasts some seriously snappy and bumping beats, with the eccentric French producer smothering it in more quirky electronics, delay-laden, barely audible vocal samples and trippy effects.

Review: London based South African Esa continues the rich vein of form he triggered on his Dekmantel debut with this unique and refreshing EP on Endless Flight. Powered by loose limbed breaks and peppered with alluring, rippling African rhythms, sounds and melodies, the whole EP flicks and flares like we're still in the peak of summer: "Son Op" snaps and bubbles in mid 90s feel that wouldn't have gone amiss on Northern Exposure, "Bra Hugh" shimmers with a little tropical charm and a soothing velvet 80s Miami feel while "London Mix" is the most direct party jam with its strutting breaks and boogie style bass. Need a little contrast? Jump on the Beesmunt Soundsystem mix for some dark slo-mo tribal fun.

Review: If you've not yet got your ears around Roger 'Chip' Wickham's sensationally sunny, jazz-fired "Shamal Wind" mini-album, we suggest you check it out post-haste. In the meantime, Lovemonk has reminded us of its magnificence via a new set of reworks from some seriously hot producers. Max Graef handles side A, first serving up a chugging, mind altering and heavily percussive "Bongo Mix" of "Soho Strut", before reaching for the sub-bass and fizzing, juke-tempo jazz rhythms on the bonkers but brilliant "Bass Mix" of the very same song. Over on the flipside, Peckham beat-maker Reginald Omas Mamode IV serves up a dusty, Rhodes-laden take on "(Soul) Rebel 23" featuring his own soulful vocals, before Gilles Peterson favourites Ishmael Ensemble mix live jazz instrumentation with rolling house beats on a sublime revision of "Snake Eyes".

The Berlin by way of Banff producer gets deep down and dusty on the smooth jam "Horizon", followed by the super soulful groove of "Wanna Feel Free" on the flip, before closing with the seriously lo-slung funk on the wicked dub version.

Review: The Swedish deep house duo of Alexander Berg (Dorisburg) and Nils Krogh (Arkajo) aka Genius Of Time are back outside of their established Aniara imprint for the second time on Running Back since 2014's Juno Jam EP. It has been a long time between drinks, with Krogh pursuing some great solo stuff as Arkajo and Berg performing in Sebastian Mullaert's Circle Of Live. This terrific new EP features the bittersweet "Peace Bird" that follows through with warm Rhodes keys, woody percussion and an all-round lo-slung swagger. The spacey and understated "Smiling Into Eternity" follows through on the B side, followed by the reduced and emotive disco of "Rymd01". Great stuff once again by the Gothenburg-based duo.

  1. Detroitasaurus (6:27)
  2. Van Dyke Vessel (6:20)
  3. Delray Dance (6:37)
  4. Zonin' (4:48)
Review: Brian Kage's fourth release on Michigander Music "303 in the 313 EP" features 4 uniquely gritty and acid-soaked manifestations of mid 90's Detroit. This exercise in analog monosynth mastery directly connects the grittiness of the urban landscape with the raw spirit of creative freedom. Detroitasaurus starts the record off with a subtle prehistoric soundscape, steadily building rhythmic tension using hypnotic toms and melodic drum patterns. Razor sharp 909 hats hammer down there through the sonic mist as the journey continues to build. Shrieking jurassic trumpets cap off each of the peaking climbs to reveal metallic broken-down structures that are bound together with oscillating 303 threads and a grooving bassline. Van Dyke Vessel features an atmosphere of textured percussion and metallic analog synths that wind around a deep square bass groove. Suddenly, truncated growling vocal samples start to collect into the catchy phrase "Let's take this to outer space". Swelling pads give way to squealing acid as this track transports dancers to a nostalgic melodic dimension. Delray Dance undulates with thick bass slowly building into a body focused groove as it winds up and gives way to a rugged 303 saw with fluttering Spanish style synth stabs. Classic Detroit pads continue to swell, adding to the tension and leaving enough sonic space for melodic mixes in and out. This tune is the perfect tool to transition between genres. Zonin breaks the mold by combining old-school electro vibes with a heavy dose of acid and freestyle hip hop. Heavy broken beats are combined with a rockin' nostalgic bassline and layered party vocals that transports you to the center of the dancefloor on the best night you've ever had.

Review: Luther Vandross originally wrote and recorded "My Body" in 1979, though his version was never released; instead, the song was re-recorded by Stephanie Mills and included on her 1983 album "Merciless". Here we finally get a chance to hear Luther belt it out himself, with Masters At Work man Louie Vega providing production and a dizzying number of remixes. There are two bumpin' and life-affirming "Soul House" mixes (the second replacing Vandross' lead vocal with some mazy Rhodes solos), a fluid and positive "Remix/Synth Bass Mix" that packs plenty of dancefloor energy, and warmer "EOL Mix" and "EOL Dub" versions that utilize a warm bass guitar part and some tasty chord progressions. Throw in a couple of edits and instrumentals and you have a suitably epic set of reworks.

Review: Veteran German producer (and one half of Wighnomy Brothers) Robag Wruhme returns to Pampa Records with two delightful servings of his idiosyncratic sound. The glassy-eyed and bittersweet daydream fantasy of "Nata Alma" (Club Smash Hit version) features some right legends of the Norweigian jazz scene: Bugge Wesseltoft on piano accompanied by a heartfelt vocal performance by vocalist Sidsel Endresen. On the flip, "Venq Tolep" (Hit club version) is equal parts melancholic yet utterly evocative, and is the title track of his first album-length release on DJ Koze's label in eight years.

The resultant jams are sweet, sticky and undeniably Moorish. Check, for example, the shuffling Afro-house beats, sumptuous electric piano solos, leisurely jazz guitars and spoken word vocals of "Choices", the piano and synth-bass driven breeziness of "Outside" and the classic deep house warmth of closing cut "Press It". "Now Scat", an ultra-deep, acid-flecked treat, is also top notch.

Review: Over the last 18 months, Secretsundaze duo Giles Smith and James Priestley have proved adept at delivering house records that refuse to kowtow to convention. Their latest effort, "Gigantic Impossibly Large", is a fantastic example of this, with each of the pair's four mixes offering a noticeably different vibe. The EP-opening "10AM Tripp" version is a mid-tempo shuffler full of loose-limbed drum fills, classic ambient house melodies and glassy-eyed spoken word samples, while the "NYC Dub" re-imagines the cut as a cross between Raze's "Break 4 Love" and one of Bobby Konders deep and breezy Nu Groove-era cuts. The "OG Version" fuses ambient chords and hypnotic dub disco drums, and the "B2 Jam" interpretation is horizontal head music of the highest order.

Review: A little more than a year on from his first appearance on Local Talk, Philpot Records co-founder Michel "Soulphiction" Baumann returns to the much-loved Swedish imprint. Naturally he's in fine form on a loose but on-point cut that sounds like it emerged from one of Baumann's now legendary lengthy live jams. The A-side "Hi Phife Mix" of "Beehive" is loopy and hypnotic with "French Kiss" style hooks bubbling away atop seemingly non-stop machine drums. The flipside "Classic Mix" strips things back, with Baumann peppering clanky, early Chicago house style drums with a more fluid take on the now familiar hook. Best of all though is Jamie 3:26's "Windy City Bump" remix, which is the kind of sweaty and hypnotic jack attack of which his hero Ron Hardy would have approved.
