I Know You
  1. I Know You (7:20)
  2. Badmanthing (6:53)
  3. Plastik Haus (5:56)
  4. No Fear (6:16)
Review: Whether they're operating on Toy Tonics, Freerange, Madhouse or NeoVinyl, Black Loops rarely fail to deliver the deep house goods. Predictably, the Italian duo's Shall Not Fade label debut is another quality collection of cuts. Our pick of a very strong bunch is probably "Badmanthing", a quirky chunk of rubbery deep house-funk built around a bold, memorable bassline, eccentric electronics and tipsy chords, though the skipping drums, meaty bass and tweaked New Jersey garage motifs of "Plastikhaus" are also hugely alluring. Elsewhere, "No Fear" is a notable fusion of bounding house beats, darting jazz-funk synth sounds and simmering synth-strings, while EP opener "I Know You" is a more classic-sounding slab of deep house cheeriness.

Flesh World

  1. Flesh World (6:38)
  2. In Motion (7:16)
  3. Flesh World (Kapote Drum Jam version) (10:04)
Review: Having spent the last few years giddily hopping between labels, COEO has decided to settle down. Flesh World is the Munich-based twosome's third 12" of 2017 for Toy Tonics, an imprint they first graced back in 2014. As usual, they're in a positive frame of mind, serving up a trio of tracks rich with both the feel good pulse of disco and boogie, and the metronomic heaviness of house. Both "Flesh World" and "In Motion" explore similar sonic territory, with the duo working a range of ear-pleasing samples from killer old disco and boogie cuts. Best of all, though, is the Kapote Drum Jam version of "Flesh World", which adds a little percussive pressure to an already celebratory workout.

Lucid Memory EP
Cat: RB 051. Rel: 19 Nov 14
  1. Lucid Memory
  2. Pugs Life
  3. The Delete Of Society
  4. New Horizons
Review: Roy Comanchero is a bit of a mystery. According to the brief bio accompanying this debut EP for Gerd Janson's Running Back imprint, Comanchero "hates modern production tools like laptops" and travels round looking for beaches to inspire his records. There's certainly a vintage feel to the four tracks showcased here, which combine heavy electrofunk basslines and classic synthesizer lines with Scandolearic melodies and a hazy deep house sensibility. It's a formula that guarantees good fun, from the Terje-does-boogie grooves of "Pugs Life" and bubbling analogue deep house of "The Delete of Society", to the slowly unfurling Balearic bliss of "New Horizons".

  3. Does It Make You Feel Good? (Mind Enterprises remix instrumental) (7:00)
  4. Does It Make You Feel Good? (CC DISCO vs DJ Boring Ministry Of dub remix) (6:53)
Review: Last year, Confidence Man returned to action with a single that asked a simple question: "does it make you feel good?" The answer, of course, was yes, and it would be fair to say that this new set of remixes is equally positive in tone. Greg Wilson and Che Wilson handle side A, successfully re-imagining the track as a warm, dreamy and bass-heavy chunk of crunchy breakbeat house powered forward by a classic hip-house break. The mix is available in both vocal and instrumental variations, with the former arguably being the more impactful of the two. Over on side B, Mind Enterprises delivers a thumping, Italo-disco style take, while CC Disco and DJ Boring join forces on a chunky, forthright house mix that draws inspiration from 1990s US garage dubs.

Review: Doublet is the production moniker of friends and musical partners Tomoki Tamura and Tuccillo, previously releasing together on other labels, they have come together to form the new eponymously named Doublet imprint as a channel for their own music. Tomoki and his Holic Trax label have long been serving up solid house music whilst Tuccillo has conjured up numerous Beatport chart toppers on labels like 2020Vision, Visionquest and Holic Trax. Here their unique style brings you back from classic house music to future minimalism and is sure to fill you with joy. Up first is the title track, a charming house shuffler with woozy synths, light footed percussion and skipping rhythms that give an off kilter and deep dancefloor vibe. 'Brother Other' is a slightly more physical affair with lumpy beats, tense synth crescendos and stiff snares that really encourage you to shake your limbs. Lastly, 'Buri Planet' is a deep and sensual number with clever vocals samples adding an element of pained soul, rubbery bass bringing warmth and golden synths and acid squelches building yet more character. This is accomplished, alive sounding house music that really does sound fresh. Doublet, then, is already off to a winning start. Vinyl Only.

Review: Made up of tech house trippers par excellence Tomoki Tamura and Tuccillo, Doublet have been steadily issuing forth their wares with aplomb since starting out back in 2013. Most of this material has been on their own label, and so it is on this fifth installment that finds them in especially fine form with the shimmering delights of A side track "Beautyfull". "Mush" is no slouch in the attractive stakes either with its sultry chords and slinky grooves, while "Robin & Maikel" takes a more esoteric route through tech house on the B side. It's a superbly produced EP full of imaginative ideas to match the proficiency of the beats.

Review: If you were judging Kieran Hebden's 11th Four Tet studio album merely on the way it's presented, you'd immediately think he'd spent the last two years immersed in early '90s ambient house albums. While it's unlikely he's done that, it's fair to say that New Energy does owe a debt to classic electronica sets from that period. For all the exotic instrumentation and subtle nods to post-dubstep "aquacrunk" experimentalism and chiming, head-in-the-clouds sunrise house, the album feels like a relic of a lost era. That's not meant as a criticism - New Energy is superb - but it is true that his choice of neo-classical strings, gentle new age melodies, sweeping synthesizer chords and disconnected vocal samples would not sound out of place on a Global Communication album.

Review: The SHAG Edits hits Volume 4 welcoming David Glass, Timmy P and Two's Tones to the Roots For Bloom roster. David brings a big hitter with Tape Deck with its MC sampled vocal, Timmy's is drenched in sunshine for all the day parties this is sure to go off at and Two's Tones takes things on a jazz twist, with clever sampling but always that underlying groove that the Roots For Bloom label is known for. Trivial Occupations Remixes
  1. Minor Forms (Joaquin Joe Claussell Cosmic Arts version) (15:21)
  2. St Catherine & The Calm (feat Nadia Sparrow - LNS remix) (10:58)
Review: Francis Harris blew plenty of minds with his third LP, "Trivial Occupations", when it dropped last year, and now the German deep house don is revisiting two of the tracks from the record for a pair of smartly chosen remixes. On the A side, the mighty Joe Claussell presents a Cosmic Arts version of "Minor Forms" which bursts with nu jazz stylings, from the bashy drums to the wiggy synth lines pinging into the stratosphere. Switching stance pretty drastically for the B side, deep diving Canadian artist LNS takes "St Catherine & The Calm" down a rabbit hole of head-nodding meditation over the course of 11 minutes smattered with electro touches, mystical flute and more ear-snagging delights besides.

Review: Enigmatic Berlin collective Italojohnson are still going strong, with this throwback to their 2012 underground classic "05A1" getting a couple of mad percussive reworks by some of their favourite producers. First up is former Panorama Bar resident and Kwench label boss Cassy, who serves up the deep down and dirty bounce of her rework, followed by Parisian enfant terrible Bambounou who adds his signature touch to the mix - this is one serious techno banger that's made to play!

  5. Praying For You (album version) (6:11)
  6. Praying For You (Louie Vega Expansions NYC dub) (5:41)
  7. Smile (David Morales remix) (7:01)
Review: Earlier this year, DJ Spen and Teddy Douglas's long-serving gospel-house group Jasper Street Co returned to action with their first album in 16 years. It's from that album that "Praying For You" is taken, though the selling point here is not the LP mix but rather a suite of reworks from Louie Vega. Our picks of the bunch are his jazzy and breezy "Main Mix", the brilliantly bass-heavy "Vonita Dub" (think righteous call-and-response gospel vocals and a killer groove) and the sleazy "KDA Remix". The latter is a basement-bothering stomper rich in fuzzy organ stabs and spacey electronics. The smooth, slick and pleasingly colourful David Morales remix is also rather good (it reminded us a little of vintage Frankie Knuckles rubs, which is no bad thing).

Review: New York-based Irishman Dec Lennon aka Krystal Klear had a massive year in 2018, with the disco epic "Neutron Dance" and the terrific Club Studies EP on Hot Haus Recs. Now, the Cold Tonic boss returns to Running Back with his electrifying new trip by the name of "Euphoric Dreams" which is a fitting title for this evocative and neon-lit dance floor burner which calls to mind the best of the golden era that was the '80s. He goes deeper into the night on the flip with "Miyoki"; a delightful boogie-down number which boasts of shimmering arpeggios, steely drum computers and an all-round vintage flair - there's more to come from Lennon this year for sure.

  4. Cloudface - "Panter Blue" (5:54)
Review: Something has been stirring in Vancouver for some time, as those who closely follow the exploits of the city's Mood Hut crew will confirm. Here, local record store turned party crew Pacific Rhythm launches its new label with a quartet of tracks from local artists. 1080p and Forbidden Planet man Lnrdcroy handles the A-side, dropping a sublime extended version of "Sunrise Market" - a deliciously dreamy and ethereal concoction built around waves of calming synths - and the chunkier and stripped back - but no less woozy - "Time Zone (Mix 2)". Mood Hut affiliates Hashman Deejay and Cloudface dominate the flip, with the former providing a throbbing, pared-down Dub of Memory Man's self-titled debut. As for Cloudface, his "Panter Bleu" is a deliciously wonky chunk of fizzing acid.

Review: In addition to his work as one half of Mista Men, London via Doncaster producer Ryan Aitchison has been making solo moves under his Mella Dee guise these past few years with appearances in all the right places (think Wolf Music, Shabby Doll and Sccucci Manucci). In fact Mella Dee's featured on two of the latter label's releases so it's little surprise to find the producer popping up on the affiliated Manucci's Mistress operation. The Feel It Out EP sits snugly between house, techno and bass music with the lead cut featuring a rather vicious sub bass line and some superb vocal edits, whilst "Raptor" opts for a moodier UKG meets snapping techno flex. Do check the smudged out bass refix from Will Berridge too.

Review: Since the dawn of the 1990s, David "Move D" Moufang has been one of house and techno's most reliable producers. It's no surprise, then, that this double-header - featuring a solo production, and a fresh collaboration with Jonah Sharp under the long-running Reagenz alias - is pretty darn hot. Moufang's "Roll Split" is a deliciously spacey, emotion-rich and enveloping affair that builds to a head-spinning conclusion via waves of undulating Motor City electronics, tactile riffs, surging bass and intergalactic chords. The Reagenz tune, "460 Melrose Place", is similarly cosmic in outlook, with the veteran duo smothering a superb drum machine groove with stretched out chords, pulsating sub bass, glistening, ambient techno style motifs, and shuffling bongo hits.

What makes So Many Colours particularly special is the fact Padilla got the chance to work with Barrott, Running Back affiliate Telephones, Australian producer Tornado Wallace and Jan 'Wolf Muller' Schulte, a list of artists that share a common approach to the idea and concept of being Balearic. As you would expect, copious amounts of fluttering beats, Spanish guitar strumming and deep throbbing arpeggiated basslines feature throughout So Many Colours and it's really a pleasure from beginning to end!

Flowers From Your Grave EP
Flowers From Your Grave EP (140 gram pink vinyl 12")
Cat: HT 016. Rel: 08 Jun 15
  1. Flowers From Your Grave (T2 Edit)
  2. Let's Stay Together
  3. Night Walking
  4. Exit
Review: Holic Trax has established itself as a respected, no nonsense outlet for quality house and
techno and that carries on here with a new EP from Keita Sano that comes on a limited
edition run of coloured vinyl.
Keita Sano is based in Okayama, Japan and has previously released on labels such as
NYC's Mister Saturday Night and Hugo Capablanca's Discos Capablanca. Here he presents
his latest single for the ever excellent Holic Trax in raw and excellent fashion.
Up first, 'Flowers From Your Grave' is a gritty number with tough drums, Detroit inspired pads
and plenty of physicality in the groove. Crisp and dynamic, it's a robust house cut, for sure.
'Let's Stay Together'
is a more party sounding offering with atmospheric ambience in the
back ground as streaming Rhodes chords and organic percussion set a Moodymann style
vibe front and centre.
Then comes 'Night Walking', which flips the script again, this time sinking down into a warm,
propulsive deep house vibe with bold but soft edged chords, driving drums and engaging
hand claps. Lastly, vinyl only cut 'Exit'
is a prickly, raw and frazzled acid number with phased
basslines, panning 303 squelches and plenty of wallop in its bones.
This is a fine EP that is sure to make a big impact on the dance floor.

Run Tings EP
Cat: RBSHAN 03. Rel: 29 Aug 18
  1. Who Run Tings (5:54)
  2. English Summer (6:52)
  3. Awakenings (club mix) (6:28)
  4. Take Me To The Top (6:38)
Review: Frankfurt producer Shan has enjoyed a long and productive friendship with Running Back Gerd Janson. To date, it has included a swathe of collaborative tracks and remixes, as well as regular solo releases on the label. Shan's latest EP for the imprint is naturally packed with playable material. Saucer-eyed, retro-futurist opener "Who Run Tings", for example, underpins jaunty, Inner City style stabs and piano riffs with corking, hip-house style breakbeats, while "Awakenings" offers a slightly more muscular, big room-friendly take on the turn-of-the-'90s piano house blueprint. Shan deviates further from the script on the Nu Groove style vintage deep house musicality of "English Summer" and deep '80s synth-pop-meets-deep house flex of closer "Take Me To The Top".

Party Over EP

  1. Party Over
  2. West Sonic Vibe
  3. Party Over (Inkswel remix)
Review: Slight Delay aka Tiago makes a welcome addition to the Vibrations camp with this supreme e.p of leftfield house. 'West Sonic Vibe' is a deep eastern infused tropical gem with 'Party Over' taking on a harder edge on the same mystical journey. Oz producer of the moment Inkswel takes on the remix duties and rocks 'Party Over' into a slower funked up, bass line heavy trip via Sugarhill.

Blake Hall Boogie EP
Cat: NERO 022T. Rel: 16 Nov 12
  1. Blake Hall Boogie
  2. Epiphany
  3. From The Dirt
  4. This City Never Sleeps (Nite Life mix)
Review: A quick google search of "Blake Hall" results in links to an Essex community hall, a disused tube station and a Pokemon character from Bulbapedia. It's fun to imagine that somehow all three inspired Soul 223 aka Steve Pickton's latest Blake Hall Boogie missive on Italian imprint Neroil (a possible nod to Eno's 1993 hour long instrumental opus?). The title track seats modulating synths next to fluted bass tonks and metallics, replacing wonted Roland hi-hats. "Epiphany" is a quickened and shuffly groove with a fuzzy synth line as its centrepiece, whereas "From The Dirt" enters drowsy balearic territory via slower BPMs and off kilter sonics. The upbeat Nite Life mix to "The City Never Sleeps" caps off an EP perfect for the future boogie tip.

Fates Unknown
Cat: ASD 028. Rel: 28 Jun 16
  1. Fates Unknown (6:03)
  2. Fates Unknown (Erika remix) (6:26)
  3. Pendle By Night (7:03)
Review: Johannes Auvinen aka Tin Man sure has proven himself to be the reigning acid master with a mastery over that little silver Roland box that's possibly unmatched. Back on LA home turf Acid Test, he this time teams up with Manchester duo Jozef K and Winter Son for the Fates Unknown EP for some truly soulful and emotive deep house featuring Tin Man's unmistakeable synth leads over some sombre piano and pad led deepness on the title track. Interdimensional Transmissions Erika from Detroit reworks the track into a more lo-fi and dusty rendition yet retaining Tin Man's gnarly 303 work; you could imagine them dropping this one at No Way Back that's for sure. On the flip is yet another gorgeously emotive epic in the form of "Pendle By Night" which proves to everyone just how you make a dark journey track with the perfectly executed dance floor drama.
