Review: The London-based CHURCH imprint is often too underappreciated and too overlooked given how much wonderful music it has put out since its first releases began to appear about 6 years ago and, most importantly, it is often overlooked in terms of diversity. Unlike popular opinion, they do not simply release house or tech for the floor and, if this new LP from debutant Yadava is anything to go by, they have mastered the art of eloquence and experimentation. It Rains Here is a beautiful LP, balancing its moody tones between trip-hop, balearic, and something not quite definable. Whatever the weather, this is a great source of good vibes, both on and off the dancefloor; it's funk music for the next decade, from the heart of London's streets. Check it and cop it! Warmly recommended.

Review: Here's something to raise the spirits: a double-pack containing a quartet of Andrew Weatherall remixes of "Frautonium", the opening track from Yello's largely disappointing 2016 full-length, Toy. Cannily, the former Lord Sabre has taken elements from the Swiss veterans' original version and made four varied new tracks. "Warehouse" is a trippy chunk of techno built around rubbery drums and wild electronics, while "Half-Life" is a woozy chunk of throbbing late night cosmic house. "Battery", meanwhile, laces kosmiche synths and trippy electronics over an electro-influenced new wave beat, before the gently positive "Reactor" sees him in full-on A Love From Outer Space mode. There's also a tasty bonus in the shape of a luscious ambient rework of "Lombok" by former Yello manager (and Shamen collaborator) Ian Tregoning.

Review: While Japanese house music owes a lot to the dusty drums and emotion of early Chicago beats, it has always had its own signature sound on top. The chords and pianos bring a happiness that cannot fail to get you smiling and that is laid bare again here and this superbly uplifting collection of nice analogue jams by Shinichiro Yokota on J-house legend Soichi Terada's Far Eat Recordings. There are bouncy vocal cuts like 'Timelaps', tight cosmic kickers and soul drenched vibes like 'Tokyo Traffic Paradise'. It's an impossibly pleasing collection with great use of sax in places, which is no mean feat.

Review: Susumu Yokota is an artist whose rich legacy will continue to be pored over for decades to come. Some may remember the Japanese producer for delicate, pastoral electronica, while others celebrate his refined and highly developed take on the techno tradition. As 246, he released just two 12"s back in 1995 on Reel Musiq, but now the project is getting the reappraisal it deserves via the emergent Cosmic Soup label. On this first volume of archival and unreleased material, we're treated to the woozy reverie of cult classic jacker 'Do Up' and its attendant bouncy, organ-licked house neighbour 'Clear Up'. 'Deck Up' brings an acidic urgency, while 'Escape' romps through swinging 909 bump with glee. Throughout this double 12" drop, Yokota's effervescent melodic nous shines through, making it essential for any lovers of expressive, energetic techno as made by a true titan of the genre.

Review: There's not a lot needs to be said about Kevin Yost. One of the names in deep house, Yost unveils a whole CD's worth of new material (there's 2 'old' tracks out of 14!), ranging from funky house to total recliner chillout gear. It would be wrong to label any of these tracks as "standouts" because they all are superb on their own level. One day the world will realize just how good this guy really is, but until then it's for us folks in the know to spread the word. So get cracking people!

Review: Having spent the last seven years delivering impressive singles on a variety of labels - most notably Aus Music, Secretsundaze and Hype_Ltd - Ewan Smith has decided the time is right to unleash his debut album under the Youandewan alias. There Is No Right Time is a gently expansive affair, with the Scottish producer utilizing both electronic and acoustic instrumentation on tracks that perfectly showcase his diverse range of influences. Contrast, for example, the spacey jazz-house of "Be Good To Me, Poly", the dusty, pitched-down deep house warmth of "Time To Leave (Can't Mix)", and the sparkling, B12 style IDM/electro fusion of "Something Keeps Me Real Quiet"; all are immaculately produced and impressively melodious, but hugely different stylistically. He also joins forces with Huerta on album highlight "Left On Lucy", a glistening fusion of bubbly, synth-heavy deep house, Motor City futurism and sun-bright new age melodies.

Review: Amsterdam-based graphic designer turned producer Young Marco has previously shown hints of greatness, most notably with a pair of superb 12" singles on ESP Institute that layered picturesque melodies atop huggable analogue grooves. Here, he delivers his debut album, Biology, and it's every bit as warm, imaginative and luscious as his previous work. Each of the album's seven tracks is something of a gem, from the crystalline, new age house of "Sea World" and Vangelis Katsoulis-inspired ambience of "Out of Wind", to the Italo-influenced dancefloor pulse of "Suzaku" and rush-inducing, synth-heavy brightness of "Can You Really Feel It". It's one of those albums that will brighten up even the dreariest of days, and those sets are arguably few and far between.

Review: Safe Trip is a new label endeavour from Dutch producer 'Young' Marco Sterk which launches with the amusingly titled Sorry For The Late Reply: Various Remixes For Various Reasons. Those clamouring for some new music from Sterk following his much-loved debut album Biology may be disappointed by a compilation of his remixes, but there is much to appreciate here! Not least his opening heat-treated rendition of Michael Ozone's "Hetropia" which could easily be mistaken for a Hessle Audio B-side (indeed we've heard Ben UFO play it at least once!) Young Marco completists will be happy to see previously unreleased dubs of Jacco Gardner and Zulu Pearls have made the grade too. DJs will get plenty of mileage out of a double pack like this! We can't wait to see what else is due on Safe Trip.
