Review: Parisian producer Franck Roger lands on Nu Groove with 'Cosmic Tree' EP, a four-track outing of deep house perfectly at home on the legendary NYC label. Still going strong almost 35 years after its inception, it's nice to see the label is still welcoming fresh talent: Roger delivers a sultry, sauna-dunked steam on 'Part Of My Soul', one of the most contented-sounding house tracks we've heard in a while, thanks in part to the vocal stylings of Rimarkable; then there's the more repetitious ardour of 'Radik'Hall', 'Cosmic Funk' and 'The Music', all of which revel in the purely seductive potentialities of deep house production. "The music just turns me on!"

Review: Naya Beat's modus operandi is to champion the OG sounds of the South Asian underground through the lenticular funnel of dance music. Their latest in this effort is a breakout wonder in V/A form, herding together three contemporary club titans for a jolly trans-national dialogue over the original stylings of an inimitable key player in proliferation of Bhangra music, Manjeet Kondal. The late great Kondal hears one original piece, 'Pyaar', reissued, alongside two exclusive versions of 'Ishkaan De Mamle' by digger extraordinaire Mr. Scruff, followed by a closing, straight-from-the-stems downtempo acid dub tribute by modern day remixers and DJs Turbotito & Ragz. This is an honorific tribute to the crossection of late 80s to early 90s Bhangra music with acid house, carefully modelled after the aesthetic sensibilities of the time.

Review: As far as r&b cuts go, they don't come much better or more loved than 'The Boy Is Mine', but that hasn't stopped James Mac and Vall from serving up their own version of it in a new deep house framework. They start off with warm rolling drums and embellish it with lush piano chords full of melancholy then Rosalie reins the vocal up top. It's as catchy and heartfelt as the original. On the flip is Funkerman with a much more raw and direct remix that has crisp drums and plenty of snares fills as chunky bass funk hits hard below.

Review: Retromigration's Cloudin is a deep house 12" that offers a great blend of fun, jazzy, and serious tracks. Sometimes, all in the same track. It opens with the title track, which is a proper deep house effort that is techy and fresh, with tribal and psychedelic elements. This is followed by 'Only Well,' which is a jazzy funk track with a nice melody. The third track, 'Just Take It,' is a catchy, slick house track with an addictive melody and hints of disco. Side 2 of the album opens with 'They Hatin',' an urban groove track with cool sound effects, an old skool jazz feel and a 70s sound. The album closes with 'You Win,' a clever, different and unique track. Overall, Cloudin is a great 12" that shows that house music can be much more than just an evolution of disco.

Review: A follow-up to last year's successful compilation 'Faith Presents: Ain't That A Groove', is given to us by the London-based label Faith ran by DJs Terry Farley, Stuart Patterson and Dave Jarvis. The high energy house party sound kicks off with Nolan who features the legendary house voice of Sir. Robert Owens. Hilit Kolet isn't shy with the extended remix of 'POV Siren'. This sound is synonymous with Feller and Heller DJ sets of the mid 90s. Philippa's extended remix of 'The Night' by Roach Motel backs that one up with another prime floor filler with hardly any let up. Lastly, Terry Farley, Wade Teo & Kameelah Waheed brings he deep groover "Dancing After Dark" to the party. These tracks will have you and the nightclub crowd out dancing all night.

Review: Apparently made in tribute to the legendary Paradise Garage club some years ago, these two previously unreleased workouts are the work of Kenny Summit, Eric Kupper and the late, great Frankie Knuckles. Side A boasts the trio's near legendary (and previously unavailable) remix of Lou Rawls classic "You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine". It's a wonderfully positive and life-affirming affair, with the three legendary producers wrapping echoing guitars, warming disco orchestration and Rawls' sublime lead vocal around a deliciously percussive Afro-house groove. The flip features another unseen and unheard gem from the vaults: a loose, groovy and positive soulful house wiggler featuring the seductive vocals of Yasmeen. Terrific stuff.

Review: Radio Slave making a record in tribute to the late, great Terry Hall was not on our bingo card for 2024, but the resultant workout - based on the much-loved vocal hook from 1981 workout 'The Lunatics Have Taken Over The Asylum' - is both undeniably dancefloor-ready and fittingly forthright (the original song was, of course, a scathing commentary on Thatcher-era Britain). The EP-opening 'Club Mix' places at the vocal refrain at the heart of the action, surrounding it with hazy vocalisations, thunderous bass, heavyweight tech-house drums and horn sounds that offer knowing nods to the classic 2 Tone sound. The accompanying 'A Clinic Full of Cynics Dub' leans into the ska sound of the original more, placing echoing horns and steel pan sounds atop a deep, dubby bassline and unfussy house beats.

Review: Ethos is a brand new label from Athens that follows up its notable debut with another classy deep house offering from Jose Rico, who has long been synonymous with such things. 'Dubplates' opens up with slow, patient, warming dub house that is lo-fi and coated in misty pads. 'New Life Galactica' is another richly atmospheric deep house sound with muted acid lines and humid chords while 'Fade Out' gets a little more driving with a jumble of woody hits and golden soft focus chords. 'Future World Dreamoon' shuts down with fine broken beats and jazzy synth work for cultured and cosy backrooms.

Aroop Roy is the man on the buttons and 'Mama Mwana' is the Afro opener that transports you to somewhere hot. Squeaky guitar lines unfurl over the warming rolling beats to a hypnotic effect. Review: More 'different strokes for house folks' as the Faith crew returns to wax, this time with a swathe of new revisions of classic cuts. On the A-side you get two fresh takes on 90s anthems by Farley and Heller's Roach Motel project: a joyously bouncy, peak-time ready dance through the pair's 1993 gem 'Movin On' courtesy of Darius Syrossian, and a chunky, restless and subtly pitched-down Harry Romero rework of the pair's infamous mid-90s tribute to DJ Pierre, 'Wild Luv' (wild pitch, I think I love you). Over on the B it's all about Cevin Fisher's turn-of-the-millennium workout 'Love You Some More'. Review: With his release schedule operating at a gentle pace to allow for each of his twelves to sit and be considered on their own merit, Daniel 'Red Rack'Em' Berman makes just his second outing of 2013 with this pair of cuts for the ever strengthening Wolf Music. It's a record that shows off Berman's idiosyncratic approach to deep house on two very different levels. The first track, "In Love Again", is as blissed-out and heartfelt a take as you could wish for, from the sumptuous pad lines to the plastic strings that positively ooze contentment and passion. "Latin Techno" meanwhile is perhaps less predictable based on its title, opting for a jagged cut up of drum machine patterns and contorted brass sounds but rubbing them up in a non-direct way that makes for a delirious and utterly singular end result.

Review: Italian DJ and producer Reekee is normally found heading up his Wrong Notes label, but he's also dropped deep house heat on Sistrum, Roots Underground and Uzuri in his time. After inaugurating the Time To Play label last year, he's back on the label with an astounding new single, 'No One'. The track stretches out on the A-side like a song of this quality should, featuring Anna Cavedon delivering a striking, soulful vocal over some truly blissful chords that come on like space-age Rhodes soaked for months in the sweetest chorus. On the flip, Gary Superfly delivers a smoky dub mix of the track which adds some sizzling, raw drums and tripped out, dirty reverb chords that call to mind STL. If you want to zero in on Reekee's production, the instrumental is also on hand. This is real deal deep house with all the personality you could wish for - don't sleep.

This unknown label is now home to a load more starting with the lovely soft focus chords and gospel tinged vocal bursts of deep house meditation 'We Need Change'. A house dub ups the energy a little with more cosmic sprinkles raining down over percussive grooves. 'BFG' then ups the disco quotient with elastic bass and leggy drums, a nice organic vibe and carefree chords. 'Blue' shuts down with some feel good soul and funk house fusion work.

Review: Roberta is a producer inspired by the late great Motor City don that is Mike Huckaby. That is clear to hear in this new EP for the small but well-formed Sole Aspect label across a quartet of sublime deep house gems. Opener 'Excursions' is as smoky as they come with gorgeous but muted chords that bring warmth and diffuse light to the cuddly-deep drums and delicate percussive sprinkles. 'Forever Love' has a jazzy flute bursting out the mix next to more prominent drums while 'Love Mosaic' is a delightfully smooth and sultry late-night charmer with gorgeous soulful vocals and steamy sax lines. A classy EP all round.

Review: The GLBDOM label is on a roll and we don't want it to stop. As was the last with the seance EP, this one is a various artists' affair pressed on nice heavy vinyl to match the heavy sounds. Ollie Rant opens with the quirky melodic leads and sleazy deep house loops of 'Aaaww Yeh' before Manuold brings some Chicago bump and grind on 'Roots.' The hats and drums are perfectly raw and lead you 'Deeper Underground' and into the jacked-up hands of Yann Polewka. Last of all comes some cheeky garage swing and swagger courtesy of DAN T's' nice dry 'Hold Me'.

The "Presence Deep Dub" mix of "In Her Eyes" is a multi-faceted jam, using high-end processing matched with organic, instinctive percussion to make for the kind of workout that will inspire all manner of curious reactions from the floor. It's a track more than strong enough to stand proud as a one-sided 12", with the crossover appeal to land in a whole host of different bags.

On the flip you get treated to the Imogen Soundsystem edit of Trent's instrumental, which finds the track charting a course for the stars in the most delicate and elegant of ways. Review: Fresh from delivering the excellent El U Vee EP, Make a Dance welcome North-East titan Geoff Kirkwood AKA Man Power to M.A.D Records for the first time. This time round, Kirkwood has company: Kenyan singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Rapasa Nyatrapasa. The pair set their stall out on opener 'Lou Land', where Nyatrapasa's Kenyan vocals and percussion slowly rise above a deep, drowsy and trippy deep house groove, before opting for an Amapiano-influenced Afro-tech-meets-Afro-House vibe on the more electronic 'Battle Hill'. Review: In its original 1984 form, 'I Want It To Be Real' was Freeez founder John Rocca's debut single a soulful slice of cutting-edge vocal electro that rocked clubs from Brooklyn to Bradford. This welcome new edition boasts a fresh rework from edit-not-edit specialist Late Night Tough Guy, who utilises some of Rocca's original elements the killer bassline, synth solos and so on while adding dreamy deep house chords and a restless 4/4 beat. It's rather good, but even better is Farley 'Jackmaster' Funk's flip-side 'Hot Piano' mix, which originally appeared on Rocca's 1987 set Extra Extra. A breezy, life-affirming chunk of early Chicago house brilliance with added extended piano solos, it's arguably the definitive mix of 'I Want It To Be Real'.

Review: There's very little collaborative work by Chez Damier and Ron Trent, especially the cuts they made during the days of Prescription Records, that isn't timeless and top-drawer. You could certainly say that about the four tracks that make up 1994's now reissued Hip To Be Disillusioned Volume 1. The untitled opener is loopy, deep and hypnotic in their trademark early morning style, while the track that follows - a version of Primitive Arts LP cut 'Sometimes I Feel Like' - is a little warmer and more positive in tone but no less chunky and locked-in. The flipside opens with a rolling, early morning loop jam (think deep, chunky bass, delay-laden synth stabs and crunchy drums), while the closing cut is a wickedly stripped back version of previous single 'I Feel The Rhythm'.

Review: Fred Everything's profile may not be as high as it once was, but he continues to serve up high quality treats - as this surprise collaboration with legendary vocalist Robert Owens proves. The latter is in fine form on the EP-opening 'Classic Mix', a warming, musically detailed chunk of vocal deep house positivity that sounds like it was partially inspired by Dubtribe Soundsystem classic 'Do It Now'. Fred Everything also provides two 'BDTW' mixes on the flip: the fluttering synths sounds and vintage Chicago house grooves of the 'Deep Mix', and a more stripped-back 'Vox Dub'. Best of all though is Martin 'Atjazz' Iveson's rework, which recalls the fluid synth sounds, jazzy flutes and intricate percussion programming that marked out his early 2000s work on Mantis Recordings.

Review: Few vocal deep house records are quite as timeless as Cece Rogers' "Someday", a Marshall Jefferson produced anthem that has continued to be constantly played by discerning DJs ever since its original 1987 release. As most will tell you, it was also the major sample source for Liquid's rave anthem "Sweet Harmony". This South Street reissue replicates the track listing of that initial Atlantic release, albeit it in re-mastered form to sound a little meatier on modern club soundsystems. On the A-side you'll find the essential Club Mix, where Rogers' impeccable vocal and Jefferson's meandering piano solos naturally dominate. These piano solos take more prominence on the "Some Dub" version, which in true '87 style still includes key vocal passages drenched in dub delay, while the Accainstrumental is - ironically - a little more like a contemporary house Dub.

Review: It's been a while since we last heard from former Ubiquity Records modern soul starlet Jeremy Ellis. Despite his mid-2000s success, the man with the golden tonsils has been off the radar since 2010. He's sounding as smooth and soulful as ever on this surprise return to action, lending his impeccable tones to a chunk of lilting deep house from Sandman and Riverside. Kai Alice handles remix duties on the A-side, delivering a tactile chunk of heavily electronic deep house with fluid chords and extended solos aplenty. That musical fluidity comes to the fore on the flipside KZREKchampa Club Dub, which peppers a shuffling, glassy-eyed groove with selected snippets of Ellis's brilliant vocal.

Review: Rayko is back with a much anticipated second volume of the Vadillo Vice series on Rare Wiri and again it is timeless disco and house for fans of the likes of Tiger & Woods. 'Rain' is slow and rugged with fleshy arps and tinny percussion before an iconic via sample lights up the groove. 'Mercy' is another unhurried but soul drenched sound with low slung drums and claps and airy pads up top. 'Gold Dust Woman' ups the ante a little with extra pace but no less emotion and heartfelt vocals while 'Amigo' closes down with a lovely Spanish twist.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: Gravity Graffiti has been doing great things with its series of split 12"s already, but now the Italian label goes one better for its tenth release with this mighty double pack of heavy hitters. First up is the ever-untouchable Yoshinori Hayashi, who gets as straight up as he possibly could with the freaky house burner "Dissociative." Telephones is feeling particularly dubbed out and groovy on "Kalimbalimbo", while DB.Source and Riccardo Schiro take things strung out and textural on "Montevago". Dynamo Dreesen is in rave mode for the pepped up and delightfully weird "Reactivate", leaving the final side to Oyvind Morken & Kaman Leung's chugging "Tunnel Visjon" and the rubbery side swipes of Acidboychair's "The End (At Any Speed)".

Review: Fresh from collaborating with Dubfluss on the Rowle-released Intergalactic EP, tech-house scene stalwart Rowlanz pops up on Joule. There's much to admire throughout, not least title track "Jogger". It sees the long-serving London producer add wonderfully spacey chords and supernova electronics to rolling tech-house beats and a suitably heavy synth bassline. Elsewhere, "LH9" is an ultra deep and hypnotic affair rich in dubby bass and dreamy electronics, while Zendid's fine flipside revision of "Jogger" strikes a perfect balance between flotation tank dreaminess and minimalist dancefloor haziness.

Review: British producer Gerry Read returns with some roughed-up soul/disco workouts on this new one for Pampa, all reinterpreted via his idiosyncratic, lo-fi style. We're loving infectious, dusty opener "It'll All Be Over" with its sweet soul vocal samples, jazzy guitar licks, blocky Rhodes chords. That's not all, label chief DJ Koze contributes another misty-eyed disco-house remix on the flip, careful not to deviate too much from the original, but injecting it with just the right amount of dancefloor dynamics. We're also loving Read's second cut, "Satyricon", with its intoxicating and hypnotic melody, driven by a deep mid-tempo groove peppered with sultry Spanish phrases.
