Review: Circle Of Live is a collaborative electronic project led by the Swedish techno artist Sebastian Mullaert. It aims to reevaluate the structures of performance, linking artists and their machines for improvised jams. It debuted at Baskerville Hall as part of Wales based Freerotation festival, featuring a revolving cast of musicians, who in this incarnation included such big names as Mathew Jonson, Dorisburg and Johanna Knutsson, alongside festival and label co-founder Steevio. With artists like this linking up, you can just imagine what kind of magic they'd possibly conjure up and we can assure you it's absolutely sublime. These five excerpts from the live performance capture some of their most dynamic and spellbinding moments.

Review: Owen Jay and Melchior Sultana have been a fine production partnership for a while now. They craft a cuddly, heartfelt brand of deep house that is heavily influenced Mediterranean landscapes, colour and ways of life. Their new double album on Batti Batti is another classy, deep and cultured record that open on a lithe elector workout with rich boogie bass. There are also plenty of trademark smoky-deep house grooves, lo-fi beat workouts like 'West Coast' and subtle bumpers for the cosier club spaces out there. The synth interludes like 'Blurred Vision' help this play like a full listening experience, too.

Review: If you were into house and techno around this time a decade ago, you surely wouldn't have been able to avoid Maceo Plex's acclaimed debut album Life Index. The Valencia-based, Miami native finally hit the big time after many years as an underground artist, with this impressive merging of minimal/tech house with disco/soul-funk influences that would go on to be constant throughout his work ever since. This worthy reissue as part of Record Store Day 2021 features all the hits that soundtracked a rather memorable 2011, such as the lo-slung rolling funk of 'Sleazy E', the druggy and sax-led euphoria of 'Silo' and the blissed-out summertime groove of 'Dexter's Flight'.

Review: 'Connection' feels more direct in emotion than some of The Maghreban's early works, sonically encapsulating an up-close and personal feel that reflects the personal qualities of the artist (Ayman Rostom), and his East African and Middle Eastern roots, more than anything else. I was becoming more comfortable with connection whilst making it, rather than keeping to myself.More driven by drum-machine loops, and the cinematic mysteries one can fit around it, it's also got features from rapper Nah Eeto and singer Abdullah Miniawy, painting a smokey, dark and modal-jazzy picture of (a haunted) house.

Review: Magic Number is Ross Hillard, a downtempo and orchestral composer whose engineering and bass playing can be heard on an array of releases, most notably for the likes of his own house favourites including Louie Vega, DJ Spen, Kerri Chandler, Lay-Far and Atjazz. Now debuting his first record on the latter artist's eponymous label, Badly Written Songs sounds like a slice of humble pie, but it's actually well-thought out title: in Hillard's own words, "(it's) a tongue-in-cheek reference to how transient electronic music can be." Thus, writing songs in this genre might not have been the most sensible and sustainable idea - but we all love house music, so we put everything into it, hoping that people don't discard it too soon. True to an engineer's tastes, the album is ultra-dynamic and bright throughout, serving up a consistent guest-vocal steeze reminiscent of Charles Webster or Herbert's gravitas.

Review: Who is Magou? That's anyone's guess, however it is said to be a mysterious side project by an otherwise respected Italian producer and DJ. They return to Berlin's Toy Tonics for a full and proper double 12' release, a debut album in-fact, taking in disparate elements. We really enjoyed the low-slung modern disco on offer ('Eco' / 'Borges'), as well the neon-lit Italo numbers ('Pas Jolie' / 'Sample Dream') and were even impressed a by that bit of electro-boogie ('Heather's Body') - all blended in a classy and understated manner throughout.

Review: Antoni Maiovvi, a Bristol born artist of no fixed European abode, has been infiltrating strains of Obscure Disco, Synth Disco and Italo-Disco for several years now, but if feels as if the wider world is finally ready to embrace his gothic vision. As the Giallo Disco label he runs with Vercetti Technicolour grows, so does a creative partnership with Umberto for Death Waltz Originals, and now we have Avrokosm. Some six tracks long, Avrokosm is a fine debut for Amanda Brown's Not-Not-Fun label, charting new levels of Maiovvian mysticism and dancefloor pleasure - see "Road Worn" and "Afternoon Youth" for the most compelling examples of this latter facet. The sci landscape sleeve artwork from Annita Rivera is superb too!

Review: Mall Grab's new album showcases the full gamut of the acclaimed producer's sound across 13 hefty new cuts. The Aussie himself says of the album that it is "deeply personal and an exploration of all influences, sounds and sides of the Mall Grab project." He only dropped out of university six years ago but since then has grown into a new school DJ star who has found solace in making music. Review: Manmade Science is producer Michel Baumann (aka Jackmate/SoulPhiction), engineer Nik Reiff and percussionist Benjamin Lieten (aka Phlegmatic). With the feeling of a raw live session, this masterpiece comes along in a variety between jazz and techno, soul and house. It also contains a live track from a Manmade Sciences Concert at the Jazz Open in Stuttgart. There are also collaborations with guest musicians like conductor, musical-director and multi-instrumentalist John Thrower playing the sax on the starter "Chicago Sidewalks" and the last song "Brown Sugar". There are some lovely vocals from Isaiah Femi Awonaike on "Turn down the Lights" and the garage feel comes with the stunning voice of Haldor Laegreid on "Just tell me when...". If you're looking for something with more flesh than just bones check this out!

Review: Some six years into his career, Neil "Mano Le Tough" Mannion is showing distinct signs of artistic development. While Trails, his sophomore set, follows a similar formula to its' 2013 predecessor, Changing Days, it's a much more intricate, experimental and effervescent affair that makes great use of live instrumentation and his own impassioned vocals. So, while there are nods towards smoky, eyes-closed deep house - see "Half Closed Eyes", "I See Myself In You" and the sparkling "Sometimes Lost" - the album is dominated by downtempo electronica compositions. These variously draw on the drowsy bliss of James Blake, post-dubstep melancholia, post-rock/electronica fusion, and the hazy world of Balearica, suggesting that Mannion is making the best of his growing confidence.

Review: Last year discerning digger Jose Manuel gifted us with a first compilation of 'Obscure & Rhythmic Tunes', searching for deep cuts which fused the best of various cultural percussive styles with the emergent dance music of the early 90s. Now he's back for a second round, drawing further into the breakthrough years of the late 80s and coming up with some astounding cuts well outside the usual narrative around the advent of house music. Review: Map.ache's second album on Giegling sneaks out later in the year, but not too late to make some the best of 2020 lists, we hope. Once again, Jan Barich draws you deep into his mystic world of cloudy dub, grainy ambient and lo-fi textures, house grooves, jazz motifs and downtempo bliss, all cleverly interspersed with found sound recordings of every day life, gorgeous organic instrumentals and plenty more. That lends the album a storytelling quality that means each tune plays out like a scene in a film. Some sink you deep into the sofa, some take you to a bustling market, some to a park on a warm summer's day.

Review: This is the first release from Berlin based La Luna: a label that focuses in on connecting music and art. Belfast based artist Maricopa inaugurates the imprint with this seven track mini LP, featuring guest artist Exit 47. Maricopa had had previous releases on the likes of Tusk Wax, Back To The Balearics and Fools & Fables Recordings. The sublime slo-mo house of "Bubbles" is simply gorgeous and just made for drifting, as is "Impulse" which is probably the most dance floor friendly offering on here while "This Was Years Ago" is bittersweet as much as it is uplifting with its soothing tones and soulful downbeat aesthetic. Berlin based artist Memo created the surreal sleeve which is also available on high quality A1 poster, but extremely limited.

Review: Never have the words "hotly anticipated" been so apt. Ever since Ghostly International announced that they'd signed Mark E's debut album the hype has been steadily building. So is Stone Breaker any good? On the whole, yes. For starters, it's a very Mark E album. All the Wolverhampton producer's trademarks are present throughout - think loopy grooves, dark atmospheres, vaguely Balearic slow-house, sly disco samples and cute nods to long-forgotten Chicago house tracks. But there are also signs of development - see the ragging acid of "Belvide Beat" or the epic deep-jack of "Got To Get Me There" - and enough subtle changes of mood, tempo and melody to please all but the most cynical of critics.

Review: Internasjonal's refreshingly worldwide focus continues apace here with a comprehensive label debut from Belgrade-based musician and producer Nenad Markovic. Despite high profile names like Mark E, Hunee and Mano Le Tough appearing on the label, Internasjonal has largely been a platform for unheralded talent to shine and Markovic certainly does that with Kayto. This seven track album presents the eminently talented Croatian to have a true mastery of his instruments and a production style that is effortlessly contemporary in it's approach to disco. The bugged out jazz house of "Theme" and the Balearically inclined "Weather" are standouts on a fine debut release.

Across 11 tracks, a far-travelling range of moods and grooves is offered up with rich layers and tight structures keeping you locked. There is turbocharged techno, skeletal and slow motion rhythm workouts like 'Mere' and pumping, sweaty, trance inducing club tracks Omar S would be proud of with 'Mini Trance.' The melodic majesty of 'Pling' is another highlight that show this artist has come a long way since his first release in 2018 on Modeselektor's Seilscheibenpfeiler label.

Endless is another ambitious album across four sides of vinyl that features plenty of associates guesting such as Wassu & Mariel Beausejour, Jodie Knight and Simon Doty. It has a range of emotions that go from deeply intense and personal to more expansive and optimistic, all with compelling grooves and well-executed sound designs in each tune. Review: Fans of his Detroit techno veteran Gary Martin's previous releases on labels like Motech, KMS and Exceptional will not be disappointed by this latest offering from one of the Motor City's most underrated talents. The full-length LP Lagarius shows off Martin's knack for blending funk, soul and Afro-Latin influences, with a faster-tempo'ed techno sound. It's heavy on the detail, with arguably only trained ears being able to pick up on all its backing samples and intricacies (that's us, of course).
