Review: Hailing from the brilliant, tangled web orbiting Future Sound Of London, Mental Cube was one of Garry Cobain and Brian Dougans' short-lived side projects which found them indulging in the bleep and acid house sound. Given the talent at the controls, it's little wonder this release became such a holy grail - a misfit twist on the conventional formula of club records at the time and yet still as satisfying as any of the more widely played early 90s hits. This is the first time the release has been reissued in its true original form, meaning both mixes of 'So This Is Love' and the 'Santa Monica Mix' of 'Q'. Listen out for the cheeky nod to 808 State on 'So This Is Love' - a respectful tip of the hat rather than a cheeky lift, we'd say.

Review: Alton Miller doesn't get spoken about as much as he should - he is a genuine Detroit pioneer who played the city's earliest house parties and decades later he is still turning out authentic and emotive deep house. Here he debuts on Mister Bear Records, a new imprint out of Berlin. First up is 'Am Forplay', a mid-tempo roller with heady chords slowly moving through the scales next to smoky vocal coos. Review: The third vinyl release of the year from Blur Records sees three distinguished producers - ColorJaxx, T.Markakis and Manuel Kane - sharing duties, each delivering a track each but with the distinctive, music-centred 'deep house fusion' flavour of the Blur label very much at their heart. ColorJaxx's 'I Know You' kicks off proceedings in upbeat mood, goaded along by a skippy garage beat, some beautiful piano work and arresting male vocals. 'Ain't Like That' by T.Markakis rolls slower and deeper, clouds of warm synth giving it a reassuring, dub feel, while Manuel Kane's 'Funk' boasts a cheery, end-of-evening sparkle with its hypnotic vocal samples and gentle sirens. 'Hold Dat' has jazzy motifs and funky bass riffs down low that remind of early West Coast tech house sounds from the likes of Fresh & Low and 'All We Need' then layers up r&b samples and even more smooth and silky late-night chords into a real smoocher. 'PR Process' ends on low-slung and lumpy drums and spoken word samples run through with dubby chords.

Review: The Vinyl Only label rolls on towards its 20th release here with Mar De Novo serving up the irresistible Apericena EP. 'Quantity Check' is a low-slung funker with noodling baselines and nice loose percussive rhythms under some exotic vocals. 'Blue Eyes Clear' is a more lavish and downtempo number of chilling by the Med come sundown and then comes Ryu's Rub of 'Quantity Check' which is more funky and fat-bottomed. John Morales is pretty universally credited with inventing the 12" when he decided he needed more run time for his remixes than could be found on a small 7" 45rpm. Those remixes were often done on the studio floor when he would cut up and splice analogue tape to insert new breaks and extended instrumentals. He remains as good as anyone at that and these new versions of Curtis Harrison's 'I Want Your Lovin' and 'I Want You All Tonight' show why. They are steamy and loved-up disco gems that have everything needed to set the floor alight- big vocals, big drums, lush synths.

Review: Drivetrain and Melodymann hail from Detroit and Belgium respectively and together the've cooked up an incredibly affecting quad of tunes which we now hear pressed to wax via Soiree. An overarching homage to the classically 'slapdash' or lackadaisical feel of Chicago and Detroit house abounds, as the likes of 'Music Got Me' and 'Keep It Movin' work in the very same janky shuffles that would hear the latter ends of those genres bleed into US garage and come with palette-cleansing aperitifs in the form of vocal samples from various soul sources. Review: Mr G is presumably called Mr G because he is such a G. For seemingly ever now he has been turning out his smoky, stripped back and economical basement house joints, coated in dirty, lo-fi pads and grime. They are rollers that lock you in and keep you there and no matter how many times we hear new ones from him, the effects are always powerful. Here we get two more on his own label - the humid 'Drop It' and more raw and urgent 'Nangs', then comes a Drawing On Grace remix of 'Drop It' from Mr G's regular team up mate Duncan Forbes that pumps a little more of a funky drum pattern and a G Reprise that allows some light into the mix.

Review: After many years turning out 12"s, Klasse Wrecks has decided to serve up a first-ever 10" and they give the honour to Mr. Ho. His '000 Baby' is a delightfully widescreen sound - a post-rave mix of comedown electronics, dusty breakbeats and soothing ambient pads with some smart vocal samples drifting like wispy clouds. On the flipside, we're treated to and OM Unit remix that beefs things up and speeds up the drums. The percussion too is more defined and the energy levels ramped up with deft 808 bass and searching acidic leads. A nice yin to the A-side's yang.

The A-side is taken up with a pair of tunes that are split into two parts and both just roll and roam with a delightful freedom. 'The Sun On The Refugees' has a more unsettled melodic phrasing that loops and loops until its joined with some extra keys that release the pressure then 'Satellite Orbit Funk' is downbeat and dusty house a la Theo Parrish. Manhattan Project aka Mellow Man (Andreas Marek) is the label owner is here with his latest EP of new music. Work It offers four classy house tracks for the late-night dancefloor fanbase. No surprise by the title of the track 'Work It!', that it has all the makings of a classic Chicago-inspired track. For those who like Jasper Street Co. sound then you are sure to like 'This Luv You're Giving Me'. There are moments when these give us a gospel house vibe. Mark Knight's label has mastered the art of maximal sounds and this eighth volume of the Tooroom Sampler series is another one that will do plenty of damage. Essel's 'Sweat' is a rigid tech cut with stiff synths and libidinous vocals, then Shiba San and Ayarez get direct with shuffling tech house cut 'Twist It' complete with big skewed synths. Friend Within's 'Pilka' keeps the energy levels high with fizzing synth loops over textured drums and a fat bassline. Review: ]Jesse Maas career making dance music is relatively short but is building a good buzz about his strong work on his last few releases especially. JSS222 is the first EP he has made for the Aku label. The production is killer on this EP overall so expect this 12" to rock the dancefloor without hesitation. If you have any doubt, just go straight for the A2 upbeat, tech house banger 'On You'. This kind of work reminds of key Derrick Carter business. Chicago styled tech house that isn't scared to have vocals but they really rock the house crowd at a techno crowds' speed. 'Yamasa' sounds like something you would hear on Poker Flat records. 'Make It' adds a bit of progressive house feel to close the EP out. In all, this EP is guaranteed to do some work on the dancefloors that hear these. Have no fear, Jesse Maas is here!

The Holseek remix is wired up with some twisted synth paranoia last of all is 'The Boy Is Mine' (feat Rosalie - Sasson remix) to close down this throwback EP.

Review: Having dropped his Lagarius album earlier this year, Detroit mainstay Gary Martin is back on his Teknotika label with a collaborative EP with fellow Motor City legend Javonntte. The story goes that Martin had planned a break from the studio, but instead wound up connecting with Javonntte to lend his considerable keyboard talents to one of Martin's beats, which wound up in two different versions of 'The Infinite Time', now found on the B-side of this single. In both mixes, Javonntte's keys soar high and Martin's beats move with a broken flex that only adds to the jazziness. A-side track 'Zurvan' came after, balancing the record out with an Eastern-tinged melodic scale which gives the record an enchanting, mysterious quality.

The Special Character Peaky Renip remix is a chord-heavy take on the original, while the original 2010 Secret version is a more electro-oriented interpretation.
