Laseech - "Forbidden Estuary" (6:12)
Larry Quest - "Room 4 More" (5:29)
Jay Sound - "Reflections Of Love" (feat Josefine) (6:33)
Review: Fusion Sequence is a new offshoot from the Mellophonia label that kicks off with a heavyweight release both literally - its 180g vinyl - and metaphorically. It features seven different artists offering up one track each on what is a widescreen exploration of fresh deep house. They are A Vision of Panorama, Eternal Love, Pool Boy, Wolfey, Laseech, Larry Quest and Jay Sound and between them everything from cuddly depths to more moody late-night deepness is covered on an EP that brings plenty of new perspectives. A fine inaugural 12", then.

Review: Funky French duo Djeuhdjoah and Lieutenant Nicholson once again team up for a chelonian gallavant through house. The former singles 'Pas si vite' and 'Caipirinha' now form integral parts to a full, album, '2 Plus', on which a whopping 13 more tracks follow. Packed with bright, choral vocals ('Planete') and colliery tones ('Bwe Dlo'), this is an impressive and sunny saunter through French-Brazilian neo-soul and house.

Review: Vega Records presents Elements Of Life Extensions, the live orchestral project of label chief Louie Vega. For the project's first volume of reworks, the new tracks "Messin' About", "Our People", and the unreleased mix of "Love Is On The Way" are ones not to be missed, in addition to a wide range of talents have been especially chosen to give their take on tracks from the album. Masters At Work sidekick Kenny Dope's take on "Cerca De Mi" (with Raul Midon), Joe Claussell on the spiritual perspective of "Sunshine" (as Scared Rhythm) and a respectful remaster of the Candido classic "Thousand Finger Man".

Come On Kerrier (5:14)
Review: After releasing Luke Vibert's acid-heavy Ridmik set, Hypercolour boss Jamie Russell asked the Cornishman if he had any disco-flavoured Kerrier District material knocking about. He answered in the affirmative, and 4, Vibert's first full-length under the alias for a decade, was born. Although the project was initially inspired by Black Devil Disco Club's warped electronic disco (and, presumably, the smoother grooves of Metro Area), a decade on Vibert's approach is noticeably different. While the fluid synths, undulating disco basslines and cheery grooves remain in place, the intoxicating depth of the original has been replaced by a cheekiness more readily associated with Vibert's Wagon Christ pseudonym. It is, then, a different beast than previous Kerrier District outings, but no less entertaining.

Neon Dreams
Review: Quiff busting Night Slugs co-founder L-Vis 1990 has been tipped for big things for some time, having tugged the mullets of key tastemakers as far back as 2008. Here he presents his much-trumpeted debut album, a pleasingly MDMA-rich set that occasionally reminds us of the recent works of Bristol-based hipster Julio Bashmore (he makes an appearance, as it happens, alongside regular vocalist Javeon 'Shadz' McCarthy). Although sonically similar in some regards, there's more warmth to the tracks on "Neon Dreams" than Bashmore's sometimes alien-sounding efforts, not to mention a thick vein of 80s pop coursing through the heart of the LP. It's actually these smart pop moments that impress far more than the album's rare forays into dancefloor territory.

Review: Lake Haze's third album on Shall Not Fade is another triumph with his signature shimmering melodies strung out over lush beats. Drawing on house, disco, garage and broken beat it is a rich affair with a strong UK vibe. There is elegance and symphony to opener 'Xyleac' that immediately gets your head amongst the stars. 'Diluspth' keeps up the majestic synth while 'Bbyncole' is double-speed techno with balmy celestial synths and hurried bass that locks you in. Tender ambient pieces like 'Shores Of Eternal Life' reset the mood and then the second half is a series of shorter sketches packed with electronic soul.

Review: It's 12 years since Dresden-born, Leipzig-based Martin Enke first made waves under the Trickform alias, and four years since he launched the Lake People project. Given his production vintage, it's surprising Purposefully Uncertain Field is his debut album. In turns uncomfortable, blissful, woozy and melancholic, it sees Enke confidently join the dots between shuffling Germanic deep house, early '90s "intelligent techno" (see the brilliant "Cooping"), yearning tech-house, aqueous ambience (the swirling "Bora" and glacial "Distance"), clanking drum tracks ("Glease") and loose-limbed IDM ("Drifting Red"). Throughout, there's a curiously distant sense of atmosphere, with detached melodies and ghostly pads riding tight, bubbling rhythms.

Review: Long awaited self titled, full length album from Land Shark (aka Lance Desardi). This will shake up any preconceived notions held by fans of all dance, rock, electro and alternative sounds. The Land Shark project is an edgy departure from Lance's previous projects as an underground house music mainstay. Still deeply rooted in dance rhythms, Land Shark takes derailing hard left turns into the sonic realms of industrial, punk and electro. Definitely for fans of dance rock crossover acts such as Blackstrobe, Soulwax, The Rapture and DFA. An album that sounds like an album not a compilation of lumped together twelve inches.

Review: RECOMMENDED
The DJ Kicks series has managed to outlast the vast majority of other DJ mixes we can think of - the good, the bad, the populist, and the plain cash cow. Even the mighty fabric compilations have rebranded and rethought, bringing the original legacy, FABRICLIVE included, to a respectful end at 200 outings. Strange, then, to think, that !K7's mighty offering to the world of "What should we listen to at the afters?" has arguably managed to become more relevant as the years have flown by.

There was a time when the series existed at the lighter end of club fare, with some examples barely even matching that description. These days, though, there's often a dance floor heaviness central to the selections, with Jessy Lanza's broken, bass-driven set a case in point. Pointless attempts to describe the music, and lazy track list namedropping aside, this is energy-packed, heads down, futurist stuff packed with infectious percussion.

Review: Dutch producer Larry De Kat is finally back for the first time this year with a new clutch of off-kilter house treatments for the playful DJ to delight in. After the cat-tastic intro, "Moving Fingaz" lays out some choice keys and dusty, shuffling drums, while "7DJ" places everything on an impeccable shuffling minimal house beat. There's some offbeat disco reductions at work on "Insecure," and "Trapped" slows things down to a half step stagger for dubwise heads and boogie cruisers to get loose to. Whatever your persuasion, there's something for everyone on this rich and varied 12".

Review: Belgian producer Larson dives deep into the origins of deep house on his debut LP titled Interlace Joy Motion. Taking influence from legends such as Larry Heard, Boo Williams, Chez Damier and Chris Brann, it's a true love letter to house music, and definitely one for the heads. Of the wide selection of moods and grooves, we particularly enjoyed the emotive Windy City-styled deepness of opening cut 'Our Inner Sun' before he throws a nice curveball with two versions of the contemplative electro cut 'Slack Breeze', before the glassy-eyed early '90s Stateside shuffle of 'High Jazz Travel' and the near spiritual moment that is 'Souvenir D'Enfance' with the undeniable influence of Ron Trent. Tip!

Review: As one half of acclaimed German duo Arto Mwambe, and half of the Chicago-inspired Tuff City Kids alongside Gerd Janson, Philip Lauer arrives with his debut solo album for Janson's Running Back. Displaying a wide range of influences, it nevertheless offers a typically melodic German take on early Chicago house, electro and disco. Opening with the 80s TV theme styles of "70000 AC" the album moves through the deep electro flex of "Sheldor", the guitar led pop soundscape of "Frontex Slowfox", the slo-mo grooves of "Sandalscene", before finishing with the deep Chi town grooves of "Trainman". Essential stuff.

Review: While he's steadfastly refused to get railroaded into pursuing one particularly style - variously dropping tracks influenced by disco, deep house, Italo, electronica, Balearica and synth-pop - there's always been a melodic breeziness to Philip Lauer's solo work. This trait is, unsurprisingly, one of the most noticeable things about Borndom, his second full-length. Bright, emotive and expansive, the album's 13 tracks flit between styles - those mentioned, plus acid house, ambient, deep electro, and even a dash of eyeliner-clad new wave revivalism (see Jasnau hook-up "ESC") - but hang together thanks to regular use of crystal clear synthesizer melodies and hazy, touchy-feely chords.

Review: Whether operating solo or alongside Gerd Janson as Tuff City Kids, Phillip Lauer's productions have always tended towards the loved-up, glassy-eyed and retro-futurist. "Power" - his first solo album for three years - ripples with giddy references to vintage dance styles of the '80s and '90s, from the synth-heavy Italo-disco revivalism of "Phaser7" and "Mirrors", to the rush-inducing electro positivity of "Direction" and the almost overwhelmingly sun-kissed pulse of Balearic-minded ambient opener "Blissos". While his inspirations are overwhelmingly old-fashioned in nature, the resultant tracks are rarely less than brilliant, with the instrumental synth-pop rush of "Realistic" and muscular, Bobby Orlando-esque sing-along "Power" amongst the many sparkling highlights.

Review: Long time German electronic innovator is back on Running Back with a very welcome new mini-LP, Cyclone Days. The Frankfurt man mixes up his usual influences - indie-dance, Italo, power pop and house - into fresh and colourful new sounds. Melody rules OK across these cuts as they take in vocal gems and instrumental beats with lottos joyfulness along the way. 'Somebody' with Dena is a standout and timeless anthem for any dance floor, then 'Resonancer' has a retro-future disco-house vibe and 'Friends' is so perfectly pleasing it cannot fail to make you smile.

Review: Having flirted with Mule across his last two album length excursions, Lawrence returns to the Dial label he founded with Carsten Jost for Films & Windows, the Hamburg producer's sixth studio album. Given how much finely sculpted deep house terrain Peter M. Kersten has covered on his previous five album it's not surprising to hear that Films & Windows is driven by a central concept. Ten tracks deep, Kersten's production was apparently motivated and "inspired by an endless number of screened movies and real-life films". It's open to interpretation how much this actually manifests itself in the end results, though Lawrence fans will delight in the rich melodic warmth apparent in tracks such as "In Patagonia" whilst "Lucifer" is a certified jam.

Review: Lawrence's latest full-length, his third and final for Mule Musiq, is described by its' creator as being "deep and mystical". It was inspired, in part, by a Tokyo green space of the same name, and includes elements recorded by Lawrence's live band, Sky Walking, and plenty of field recordings to add texture. The result is a luscious deep house and techno set that veers from the dreamy and rolling ("Tensui"), and lovably bouncy (delicious IDM/electro excursions "Ava" and "Simmer"), to deep and dirty ("Joy Ride"), via wide-eyed humidity (the hypnotic and beautiful "Illuminated"). Lawrence rarely fails to disappoint, of course, but even by his standards Yoyogi Park is something special.

Review: It's happening quickly for Russian producer Lay Far, whose breakthrough year in 2012 saw him sidle up to labels such as 4Lux, and now he rounds off an even stronger 2013 with his debut album for Chicago stable Glenview. His is a well-rounded vision of deep house that draws on the soulful roots of the genre while embracing the charms of modern methods for a sound that hits on a whole lot of levels. From the sassy roll of "Yes You Can" to the nasty bass and swing of "Let Me Fly Away" there's a lot of meat to these productions, but it's not all funky flexing as R&B-tinted "Stand Up For Love" ably demonstrates.

Review: Soon, Alexander Lay-Far will release his sophomore album, How I Communicate, an all-star affair featuring hook-ups with all manner of soulful house and broken beat luminaries. This taster 12" features a sneak peak at what to expect, and is crammed full of musically expansive, organic dancefloor treats. Amongst the highlights you'll find a sumptuous chunk of starry soulful house created in partnership with Magic Number, a deliciously deep and woozy cut created with the Restless Soul Band, and a decidedly cosmic broken beat jam featuring Bristol-based producer Sean McCabe. Oh, and "Slops", a disco-tinged chunk of positivity featuring the combined talents of Ashley Beedle and Darren Morris. Superb stuff, all told.

Review: With Alexander Lay Far's latest album, How I Communicate, the epitome of a beast at 17 tracks long, Local Talk wisely chose to split up the vinyl edition into two double packs. The first one dropped back in January and we now get to savour the second helping of the best cuts from the Russian house casual's refined second album. Commencing with the Detroitian-sounding "Submerging," the six tracks here demonstrate Lay Far's talents lay beyond the confines of deep house with the wondrous Mark De Clive Lowe collaboration "Jump Higher" a towering highlight. Taking full advantage of the New Zealander's talents behind the keys, this cut finds Lay Far dabbling in a vibrant broken beat style!

Review: REPRESS ALERT: Parisian deep house hero Lazare Hoche compiles a brilliant selection to be released on his very own imprint and it's got some real treasures from the underground... so pay attention! The very rare 1998 underground classic by Luke Solomon "Jean Afterthought" will no doubt be one of the most sought after tracks on here, as well has Roy Davis & DJ Skull's remix of Modal's "Lovers" from 1996. Other delights include DJ Gregory aka .g's "La Lampe Du Vizir Adjane", Mark Ambrose aka Skymaster's "Final Link" from 1998 and Unit T's "Mystery Tones" an underground Chicago classic from 1995. There's some seriously hot new jams too by Hoche himself with Malin Genie, particularly the sleek and bumpin' "Formes" and Mandar's super deep "Mouad".

Review: Over the last few years, Damian Lazarus' albums, made in cahoots with the ever-changing Ancient Moons collective, have got progressively more exotic and infused with all manner of global sounds and rhythms. You can still hear some of those haunting and otherworldly sounds (think drifting vocals, plucked Middle Eastern strings, hazy chords etc) on his new solo album, Flourish, though this time they act as musical toppings for a range of smooth tech-house, breakbeat and electro grooves. It's a successful musical fusion that will certainly appeal to the Crosstown Rebels founder's many fans, with highlights including recent single 'Mountain', surprise ambient cut 'Bas' and picturesque vocal number 'Into the Sun' (with sometime Hot Since 82 and CamelPhat collaborator Jem Cooke).

Review: On this second album from his Ancient Moons project, Damian Lazarus has decided to switch focus. Whereas the outfit's debut album, Message From The Other World, combined global music influences with Lazarus's usual tech-house rhythms and a touch of psychedelia, Heart of Sky is much more heavily influenced by the Crosstown Rebels' chief's rarely discussed soul boy roots. Of course, the beats and basslines still largely stick to the powder house script, it's just that this time they come accompanied by starry-eyed soul vocals, 1960s dream pop influences, bold piano flourishes, gospel choruses and, on rare occasions, smoky trip-hop aesthetics. As a result, it's undoubtedly a much more "human" album, and one with far more crossover potential than its predecessor.

Last year, Giegling regular Leafar Legov (real name Rafel Vogel) delivered his first ever full-length release, a low-key tape of lengthy ambient explorations entitled "Never Ending Beginnings". Six months on he returns with "Mirror", his "official" debut album. He sets the tone with the swelling orchestral ambience of "Intro", before brilliantly joining the dots between ambient and jazz on the wonderfully string-laden simmer of "Wave". As the album progresses, Vogel sashays between ultra-deep synth-pop, jazzy downtempo soundscapes, ultra-deep and hypnotic house, revivalist DJ Cam style trip-hop, ambient techno and more seductive, jazz-inspired late-night warmth. In other words, it's a rather fine album from an artist on the rise.

Review: As part of National Album Day 2023 - yep, it's new to us too - Sony are reissuing Leftfield's seminal Leftism album. It set a high water mark for dance music albums very early on and has rarely been better when it comes to complete listening experiences that also pack a dancefloor punch. It mixes up techno and house with plenty of booming baselines but also atmospheric tunes with a unique sense of mood that is utterly alluring even all these years later. This version comes on gatefold white and black marbled vinyl to make it a perfect collector's piece.

Review: Leftifled's Leftism remains one of the great dance music albums of all time. It came back in the 90s when no one was making full lengths that really made the most of the format: This is not a collection of club tracks but a musical voyage through dub, techno, bass and house that is meticulously designed and all-consuming once you turn it up nice and loud. In fact, it is best enjoyed in one sitting rather than in the modern playlist fashion with tracks broken up because that way the pressure is built and released, the moods ebb and flow and the music really makes an indelible impact.

Renegade Of A New Age
Review: [Standard album edition sans 10"] It's rare that electronic music artists push themselves to the same degree as Danny Wolfers. The Dutch artist is one of the most prolific contemporary artists, working under an often bewildering array of guises, but this latest release sees him go deeper than before. In part, this is due to Wolfers taking more time on the production process because he wanted to make his tracks as DJ-friendly as possible, but it is also due to the fact that he has matured as a producer. The Paranormal Soul is his most refined work to date, and there is an absence of the raw edges that characterised classic Legowelt releases like Klaus Kinski or Tower of the Gypsies. Yet despite this, Wolfers' music has not lost any of the touches and flourishes that make him so distinctive. "Renegade of a New Age" and "Elements of Houz Music" have those melodic, part-mysterious, part-cheesy synth lines that Wolfers pretty much owns, and "Voice of Triumph" and "I Only Move for You" see him revert to classic acid, with visceral jacking offset by warm, 303-soaked basslines. But the most significant measure of Wolfers's development lies in the fact that he has created his own interpretation of the early 90s techno sound that originally inspired him. "Rave Till Dawn" starts with "Red 2"-style chord stabs, but instead of bombast the track gets progressively more subtle thanks to fragile break beats and mellow pads. "Sketches From Another Century", with its dreamy sweeps and building chords sounds like classic Carl Craig, but just when the listener thought Wolfer was intent on making Detroit techno tribute track, those unmistakable melody lines and warbling bass kick in, the very manifestation of the Dutchman's musical soul.
