Jesse Bru - "Futaki"
DJ Aakmael - "Offering"
M Vaughan - "Reel Recognize Reel"
Moony Me - "Taurora"
Review: Super Tuff makes an impressive debut straight out of Brooklyn with M. Vaughan at the helm, and it looks like high grade deep house is on the menu judging by the quality spread across this first 12". Jesse Bru is up first with the steady cruising "Futaki", featuring a great speech by Tom Waits about crooked trees. DJ Aakmael gets into a bouncier concoction on "Offering", and then it's down to label boss Vaughan to push an agenda of tough NYC flavoured grooves splashed with dusty soul and jazz tones in an utterly infectious style. Moony Me then finishes off the EP with an acid track that features swooning strings and some deft drum play.

An Introduction Part 2
Marcos Cabral - "Prochainement" (7:46)
Byron The Aquarius - "Full Moon" (feat MDMA) (5:09)
Lady Blacktronika - "Can We Still Be Friends?" (7:05)
DJ Aakmael - "Transit" (5:58)
Review: Given that Croatia's Dimensions Festival is one of the most consistently on-point electronic music events around, it figures that their new off-shoot label should regularly hit the spot, too. Certainly, the early signs are good. This second sampler single impresses from start to finish. Occasional L.I.E.S artist Marcos Cabral kicks things off with a fine chunk of fluid, underwater deep house ("Prochainement"), before Byron The Aquarius reaches for the talkbox on the sumptuously deep, soulful, jazz-funk influenced house bliss of "Full Moon". Lady Blaktronika gets things going on side B with the groovy, late night Detroit deep house bump of "Can We Still Be Friends". Arguably best of all, though, is the dreamy, jammed-out analogue deep house warmth of DJ Akmael's "Transit".

Just A Track (part 4)
Lush
Untitled 81
Soul Of A Woman
Review: Rocking up on his own UnXpozd Entertainment imprint, DJ Aakmael is back with further demonstrations of his gift for sample wielding in the most weighty of deep house constructions. "Just A Track (Part 4)" makes devastating use of string and vocal samples for a highly strung but immensely soulful belter, while "Lush" brings the cold shower with a simpler choice of chords and steadily ticking beat. "Untitled 81" gets more jumpy, opting for that classic soul drama once more and letting some swing get hold of the drums, before "Soul Of A Woman" gets all sweet and friendly with a blissful cascade of melody seemingly wrought from wistful abandon for the ultimate in deep house drift.

Just A Track 6 (6:59)
Just A Track 6 (Luvenote remix) (6:44)
Review: There are some deep house producers you just know you can rely on, like DJ Aakmael. No matter the season, his dusty, sun-kissed sound radiates warmth and groove loaded with authenticity and impervious to hype and fads. On this release for Deso he's in a particularly breezy mood, letting the easy tones of "Flyte Tyme" drift out over a sturdy, funked up groove. Desos strips the track back to a spartan core, all percussion and subtle flecks of the original melody. We're back to widescreen technicolour on "Just A Track 6" with delirious chopped up vocals aplenty, which Luvnote shirks for the shuffling remix that closes out this strong package of contemporary deep house.

Aakenstein (6:27)
Lost In Atlantis (6:24)
School Old (Unxposd Classic mixx) (6:53)
Review: DJ Aakmael is a trusted authority when it comes to the deepest of deep house, keeping that classic approach alive and ensuring the heart and soul of the genre can be felt by those in need. This time the talented US producer is on Dogmatik for what seems to be the first time, and he's sounding as essential as ever. "Aakenstein" is one of the stand-out tracks on the EP, making deadly use of an FM bass line and a rugged, bumping beat to impart that quintessential Aakmael sound. By way of contrast "Lost In Atlantis" brings things down to a sultry simmer while Aakmael narrates you through an aquatic fantasyland.

Tales From The Deepside
Cat: AOW 007. Rel: 10 Apr 17
Mood Capacity (5:41)
Pass It (6:25)
Deep Side (5:29)
Kosmic Bounce (6:13)
Review: DJ Aakmael is Greg Stewart of Richmond, Virginia. Producing since 2004, some say he creates some of the deepest and rawest house tracks of today's deep house scene! There's some real proper emotive gear for the late night on the smooth and sexy groove of "Mood Capacity" while "Pass It" rounds up the A side in style on this soulful Motor City style affair; think Three Chairs! Speaking of which, on the flip "Deep Side" will appeal to fans of Big Strick/7 Days Entertainment's style of inner city blues plus there's equally dreamy and summery vibes on the lush "Kosmic Bounce"with its ecstatic xylophone vibes keeping up with some dusty beats on this lo-slung groove to make you move. Tip!

Izza (6:59)
Untitled 116 (6:58)
Spreadsomluv (6:27)
Review: Through a wide selection of releases on his own UnXpozd Entertainment, DJ Aakmael has truly established his place within the house scene, and his own sound, too. The man deals in a very specific sort of deep house filled with jazzy elements, much like the one championed by the likes of Fred P or Patrice Scott. Here, on the People Earth imprint, we are graced by the deep and chimerical synth work of "Izza" on the A-side, while "Untitled 116" on the back of the wax contains an air of disco, but one that's been warped and messed with good and proper; "Spreadsmoluv" is a heads-down house lover with an insanely hummable vocal flex. YES.

Roses (6:51)
Fourpoint-5 (7:01)
Equinox (7:43)
H4 (6:50)
Review: Dusty and soulful deep house jams from Richmond, Virginia's DJ Aakmael aka Greg Stewart who has actually been producing since 2004 on a variety of labels but mainly his own imprint, UnXpozd Entertainment. First track "Roses" utilises some stunning grand piano and trumpet solos as well as a sample from 'Jean" by Rod McKuen to accompany some tight rhythm patterns and rich strings. "Fourpoint-5" is classic deep house reminiscent of old Mr. Fingers, in all its emotive and melancholic glory. On the flip there's "Equinox" keeping on with a deep and soulful Detroit deep house sound that fans of Kai Alce would appreciate while "H4" ends things on truly uplifting note, with its dreamy xylophone vibes working with some more nice trumpet sounds and rich strings on a seven minute epic reminiscent of Chris Brann's Wamdue Project from way back. This is quality!

The Hardbody Project

Hardbody (6:42)
Track 166 (6:28)
Deepshyt (6:19)
Strobe (5:46)
Review: Sloth Boogie has scored something of a coup in signing this EP from DJ Aakmael (real name Greg Stewart), whose track record of producing ultra-deep, high calibre fare makes him one of the most lauded house producers of the last decade. There's naturally plenty to savour across the EP's four tracks, from the languid, laidback shuffle of 'Hardbody' - all mazy, eyes-closed synth solos, warming riffs, dreamy chords and Theo Parrish style deep house beats - to the hazy, Omar-S-esque 'Deepshyt' and jaunty, quietly celebratory 'Strobe'. Our pick of an incredible strong bunch is 'Track 166', if only for the quality of the jazzy piano solos that sit atop Stewart's woozy chords and locked-in beats.

What Iz Deep House (6:43)
Sand (7:00)
Sand (Frank & Tony Breakaway dub) (6:41)
Review: Fresh from inspired outings on Freerange, Monologues and Axe on Wax, Greg Stewart brings his DJ Aakmael project to Scissor & Thread. He sets his stall out via opener "Take It Back", a wonderfully loose, relaxed and sepia-tinted deep house cut that simply oozes melodious warmth from start to finish. Stewart showcases his knowledge of vintage New Jersey deep house on "What Iz Deep House", where pitched-down spoken word samples and jazzy riffs work in unison with a snappy drum machine groove, before opting for a classic Frankie Knuckles sound on the tactile and piano-heavy "Sand". Frank and Tony are on hand to remix the latter, delivering a stripped-back and bass-heavy dub that's every bit as alluring as Stewart's original version.

13th Mood (7:39)
Bloo Again (6:26)
Space (7:17)
Review: Church has been responsible for some fantastic 12" singles of late, delivering killer EPs from rising stars Ishmael, Mall Grab and Wolfey & Project Pablo. Here they change tack, serving up a four-track missive from experienced underground deep house producer DJ Aakmael. He begins with the chunky, bumpin' beats, twinkling melodies and drifting vocal samples of "Beautiphul" [sic], before exploring jazzier, looser pastures on the classic summery deep house flex of "13th Mood". "Bloo Again" blends sweeping strings, Roy Ayers style vibraphone solos and a tactile groove to excellent effect, while closer "Space" smartly works a swinging groove and tasty chords for maximum dancefloor pleasure.

Rise
Jazz Piece
Untitled 105
Untitled 101
Review: Whilst his earliest releases came via the likes of Unified Records, Uzuri, Earthrumental, Vialocal, and Morris-Audio, Greg Stewart's work under the DJ Aakmael mantle has latterly funnelled out through his own Unxpozd Entertainment label. Brandishing a soulful yet distinctly sharp take on US house music, every new Aakmael 12" feels fresh in the face of so much tired 4/4 business. With the four tracks that feature on The Rise EP, it's the undoubted futurism of lead cut "Rise" that grabs your immediate attention as a detuned Rhodes line lays down the hook over crisply delivered rhythms. "Jazz Piece" is a pretty self explanatory title for a track that highlights Stewart's talent for arrangement, whilst the B Side contains two numerically enhanced untitled productions with "Untitled 105" a track that Marcellus Pittman fans will love.

Deep Cookie (6:26)
Singaye (7:33)
Jimmy (6:27)
4evr (7:07)
Review: House with an extra dose of crispy high-end from DJ Aakmael, who has haunted the saucier ends of the Chicago house scene since the mid 1990s. Aakmael is a mysterious entity, and can be ghost-spotted behind any solid pair of decks on a rainy night. 'Deep Cookie' harkens after a forgotten platonic form of house, in which East Asian synths and 808 claps collide compellingly. Meanwhile, '4ever' rounds off the B-side; it's a diggers' delight with a near-UK feel and mystical vocals and sax, recalling recent tunes this side of the pond by Ben Hauke.

Anaxander - "My People" (Michael Zucker Finale edit) (6:09)
Review: Having made their bow last autumn with the excellent "X9" by 25 Places, Dutch deep house imprint Late Night Running has turned to friends-of-the-family DJ Aakmael and Anaxander for this timely follow-up. Aakmael's "Swing" is particularly special, lacing soulful vocals and chiming melodies over a rolling, cymbal-heavy, floor-friendly groove. Appian provides a looser, warmer and notably less dense interpretation, before Anaxander immerses us into analogue style deep house territory with the rather lovely "My People". That gets remixed by Detroit's Michael Zucker, who turns it into an hypnotic tech-house roller full of gentle builds, looped melodies and hazy sirens.

Debukas - "Gas & Air" (6:43)
Review: London's Church imprint is keeping things on total lockdown, as always, and here you got the second chapter of their Volumes series...a chance for some collaborations from their department of HOUSE. DJ Aakmael's "Just A Track (Part 7)" is a slow, mindful brain melter perfect for a good old lean-back, and while Aquarium's "Slow Sunset Drive" has got more pace in its bones, it is still very much a classic chiller. Laurence Guy gets playful and expansive with the melting bass of "Wish I Knew", while Debukas delivers a fine, dubby house warmer in "Gas&Air".

Review: Deep Inspiration Show Records is a label out of Bielefeld, Germany with a focus on underground house music by artists with passion and soul from all over the world. Family Things Vol.4 - The Final Chapter features four artists providing a wide selection of moods and grooves. The ever reliable DJ Aakmael serves up his trademark style of deepness on 'Lakes', Barce gets that soulful and emotive Detroit sound going on with 'Universal Sound' and the Soul Renegades get seriously slo-mo (and lo-slung!) on 'Vibrations'. Finally, Allstarr Motomusic proves you can make a dope beat deep on the sensual 'I Care' (Radio Edit).

Review: Hailing from New Mexico and on a mission to uphold the principles of soulful house music, Plastik People offer up another fine selection of operators who understand the legacy laid down by the pioneers of true deepness. DJ Aakmael has been doing his thing on labels like Uzuri and his own UnXpozd Entertainment for a long time, and he's on perfect form on "Deeprespectrak" (with a little assistance on the mic as well). Lars Behrenroth meanwhile brings a drum heavy pressure to the otherwise smooth "Infection", and Mark Nicholas O lays down a sharp and nagging garage beat laden with jazzy licks.

Review: Joe Babylon's cultured US label Roundabout Sounds has never rushed music out but when it does serve up new material it is always timeless and top quality. This latest EP is the first installment in the new All Hands series and it features some real house heavyweights. Frits Wentink kicks off with the mystic and lo-fi depths of 'Jellyfish, then DJ Aakmael layers up his soft edge chords and cuddly kicks drums with some muted horn motifs that bring the romance. The label head brings some upright drums and spoken word lyrics for a beautifully warm sound and last of all Detroit royalty Rick Wilhite links with Jon Easley for a final blissed-out and breezy deep house day dream.
