Trident (4:48)
Common Rules (4:50)
Review: Sweet summer dub direct from Italy, D Operation Drop have always flirted with the more organic sound palettes but this is a whole new level. Big horns and authentic dynamics and arrangements; you really don't get much more rootsy than this... "Trident" is all about the plucked guitar line and star-gazing trumpet, "Common Rules" is more about the whole bass groove that leans heavily into the future supported by a select amount of hazy instruments. Essential for any daytime outdoor sets you have this summer.

Hal Grover - "Carlotta's Dream" (Orbit mix) (8:01)
B+A+D - "Moon, Sea & Waves" (8:10)
Review: Thew newly minted Newmont label makes a bold statement of intent here with a pair of no nonsense tracks. Hal Grover's 'Carlotta's Dream' comes as an Orbit mix - which may or may not be a reference to the seminal Morley techno night of the same name - and it voyages to outer space on tightly woven breaks, with smeared pads and a melancholic bassline ON the flip side, things slow right down in the hands of B+A+D -for their 'Moon, Sea & Waves.' It's spacious, heavyweight and eerie with coarse hits and far sighted pads.

Mizz Beats & Von D - "Dot Compulsion" (6:35)
Mr Lager & Von D - "Some Other Place" (4:08)
Review: For their debut 12", freshly minted label Reflektion Tapes has pulled off something of a coup by signing up Von D, a storied producer who has released killer material on such imprints as Apron, Trojan Audio, Sub Freq and Black Acre. On this outing, the Frenchman showcases a pair of collaborative tracks. On the A you'll find "Dub Compulsion", a deliciously soulful, organic sounding hook-up with Deep Medi and Eglo sort Mizz Beats. While the crispy beats and bassline and suitably heavy, it's the wavering vocal samples and sparkling keys that really catch the ear. Former Diagrams man Mr Lager lends a hand on side two's "Some Other Place", a deep space fusion of delay-laden percussion hits, ultra-deep bass and swirling, intergalactic atmospherics.

Moresounds - "Respek Is You" (4:28)
Von D - "Lamb's Bread" (4:21)
Review: A 100% French affair: two of the country's most respected basssmiths Moresounds and Von D appear on the launch of brand new French dub label Green Arrow. Both taking the same riddim, the pair take a side each to document how they've developed it; Moresounds bumps on a classical digidub approach before opening out into big pipes and arresting synths while Von D retains a little more darkness and dubspace where the percussion and reverbed vocal textures get time to shine. Both sides a blessing, Green Arrow hits the bullseye from the off.

TAR - "Loonies" (6:14)
VGB - "Rough Surface" (4:40)
Review: More tripped out, line-blurring bass exercises from Well Rounded as they re-up their WRDubs series. Freshman T.A.R takes the lead with a freaky follow up to his killer "Amplivagant" debut on Rarefied earlier this year. Keep your focus on those bulbous rolling bassline and weirded rhythmic clicks as a wave of telecommunication oddness crashes into the scene with sense-mashing effect. FKOF alumni VGB takes over the B with "Rough Surface", a much more spaced out affair with warped chords and purring bassline. Limited and dangerous.

Review: Fent Plates unleash a big old reissue right here as they revisit on of Vacant's most pivotal records - 'Nocturnal'. Landing after years of self-releases, this was his first label release that put him on the map as one of dance music's most intriguing, beguiling and unique post garage artists. His status still intact, this four year old release still sounds every bit as timeless as it did back in 2017 from the disarming ambience of 'Farewell' to the cosmic two-step of 'Left Behind'. Grab this if you didn't catch it first time around.

Review: Big up to Deep Dark & Dangerous for making it to a mighty impressive 100th release. And to mark the special occasion they've put together a special release. The full-length digital album is totally made up of collaborations between DDD-affiliated artists. Some of them have been part of the core crew for years but some are newer recruits. They all tap into the crucial DDD sound in equal style though and this 12" offers a sample the whole collection. Hypho,Ternion Sound, Pav4n, and Strategy bring the darkness then Abstrakt Sonance, ColtCuts, Confusious, Rider Shafique get more deep and atmospheric. Three further gems make this a notable 100th outing, for sure.

Transcending Space & Dub (7:48)
Saint (4:06)
Snowfox (4:45)
Review: Versa returns to his Atone imprint with more classic dub explorations. "Transcending Space & Dub" sets the parameters with springy, trippy ease; it's warped and so roomy you could lose yourself inside it for days. "Saint" hits with more of a traditional dub warmth countered by the melancholy of the French horns. Finally "Snowfox" is a creeper just as its name suggests. Nodding much more towards dub techno, once again Versa lays down a little hypnosis trickery before the melodica takes the lead and adds a whole other story. Grab this while you can.

Slower than the usual club-ready output V.I.V.E.K's label has often been known for, these are perfect home listening for the current lockdown era as Versa goes in deep; "Temple Song" is all about the subtle loopy insistencies while "Breakthrough" sinks us even deeper into our chair with its minimal ingredients providing maximum immersion. Review: Some seriously stunning sonics from V.I.V.E.K right here: two originals and two VIPs. Released on his own System Music, across the four cuts we experience the producer at his most creative, emotional and muscular. "Mantra" is a symphonic number charged with cinematic levels of sentimentality while "Show Me" twinkles and shimmers with just a subtle shade of subby darkness beneath. On the VIP trip, the modern day classic "Soundman" has been given a slight bass twist and a new drum treatment while "Asteroids" sees the addition of some stunning choral harmonies. Repeat this "Mantra" again and again....

Roots
Review: Mala's Deep Medi Musik maintains the monthly release schedule pressure with a third label contribution in as many years from the man known as Vivek. Responsible for one of last year's key releases in the double twelve drop Feel It, Vivek clearly has no qualms with the pressures of following up if the unrelenting industrial pressure of "Pulse is any indicator! Commencing in cinematic fashion; all storm clouds and answer machine beeps, Vivek wastes little time, dropping right into the satisfyingly humongous sounding half step aided by twisted strains of bass and droned out FX. Several sudden drops into the sonic mist throughout add to the unrelenting drama. This is complemented by the eerie freeform shudder of "Roots", equally cinematic in its palette though less sci-fi and more horror, with the incongruous appearance of a flock of birds midway through adding to the sense that it shouldn't work but it does.

Review: Could "Asteroids" be the most perfect name for a tune that sounds like it was made in out of space? Blast off with that first sonar blip and gracefully float away, dodging the soft rhythmic asteroids as you bob freely. Interestingly "Over My Head" is the same beat but with the cosmic yearning of Mel Dymond. With a far-away, distracted delivery she's not far off "Protection" era Massive Attack. For added trippiness and a gorgeous building slo-mo stomp flip for Om Unit's remix.

Review: System Sound sergeant V.I.V.E.K gets his bounce on: "Square Off" is a chubby, springy buzz cut that reminds us just how funky dubstep can be. A universal track that guarantees elevation, the Deep Medi affiliate has smashed this one to pieces. "Slippin" shows his more twisted side as the same hook is switched from chubby to sinewy. All paranoid Moomin chat, it's the same track but told through a totally different perspective. Grip two copies, mix up the A and B in the dance and you've got potential to genuinely blow minds.

Review: For the first time in over four years, London bass general V.I.V.E.K delivers his first release on a label other than his own highly collectable System Music dispatches. Landing on the ever innovative Blacklist, the results speak for themselves; "Where Were You" is a sombre, poignant affair. A cosy, barbed soul end-of-night moment seemingly tailored for his own System dances, it's a touching affair to the end. "Step FWD" plays the perfect counterpoint as it rewinds us deeper into the thick of the dance with its pneumatic drums, wobbled-out bass twangs and oceanic dub effects. Classic V.I.V.E.K.

Review: It's finally here... V.I.V.E.K launches a brand new label and, as the title suggests, it's something a little different to the deep 140 piledrivers his System Sound is known for. Two rootsical excursions and two killer versions, this is the sound of the System champion bringing things back to the source. The title track (featuring longstanding System MC Dego Rankin) is a warm dub jam, spaced for good measure. Flip for "Galactic" as V.I.V.E.K flings us further east on a ship powered by Oriental strings and another rolling dub groove that's designed to make rigs purr. Beautiful.

Review: Fresh between releases on Deep Medi and Artikal, French bass lord Von D makes his debut on Infernal with three more hot slabs of bass drama. 'Hunedoara' takes us deep into the heart of Transylvania with its swaggering drums and spooky undertones, 'Akasha' takes us further east on a rocket powered by eastern pipes and pure bass sludge before we climax with 'Layers'. Saving the best till last, 'Layers' is Von D at his most melodic and emotional. Heavy, thoughtful, focused but maximal; there's almost a classical schooling behind the bass weight. Stunning, as always from Von D.

We actually have no idea what D stands for in his name because we're too busy jamming to his beats. Tunes like these. Exceptional system music, forever fine-tuned, his return to Kenzo's Artikal is every bit as heavy hitting, warm and natural as you'd expect. Review: Barely a fortnight has passed since the gully Frenchman we know and love as Monsieur Von D shared an exceptional release with Egoless and already he's back. This time he's on Infernal Sounds, which is already proof of its quality - considering how selective and detail-oriented the label have been since launching two years ago. "Cross Of Hendaye" is a solid mechanical roller with heaps of human funk coded into the waspy bassline. "Remember" is a straight up homage to the early days with a sub that palpitates so heavily and tangibly your own heartbeat will sync within seconds. True to the craft.

Review: Jerome Meyer AKA Von D has been on fire in 2017. This two-tracker for Amar follows hot on the heels of acclaimed 12" singles on Khaliphonic, Reflektion Tapes, Moonshine Recordings and Lion Charge. A-side "Burn Baphomet" sees the producer continue his mission to fuse the low slung, heavyweight sub pressure and angular electronics of dubstep with the relentless feedback trails, bouncy delay and ricocheting Melodica lines of classic Jamaican dub. He ups the tempo a little on similarly minded but altogether bolder B-side "Les 12 Colonnes", which arguably sails even closer to pure dub territory than its predecessor.

Review: At long last, Von D makes his Deep Medi debut and he's packing some serious Egyptian-Greek wisdom for the ride. We kick off with "Chestlick", a tune that lives up to its name with thick sludgy waves of low-end dynamics oozing out of the speakers. It's followed by the EP title track "Hermetica". Featuring the vocals of Sinerise, there's a deeper sense of contemplation as the wonky loose beats swagger with dubby hypnosis and all manner of trippy layers. Finally Von D signs out with "Symbolism". Tapping into the traditional dub style with consummate ease, it's the sound of Von D delivering an EP we've been eager to see for a long, long time. Salute.

Review: ZamZam 82 is a first ever collaboration with another label and it is the nighty Dubquake Records from Geneva who get involved on this special cut. The story goes that 'She Solid' was born when Dubquake's Rico and Steph played Nazamba the Von D instrumental while driving in the Alps. He was immediately struck with inspiration and began writing in the car. It's a tight, bubbling tune with clean, modern bass and shiny synths as well as tumbling toms and oodles of reverb. The dub is taken in more weird and tripped out dictions thanks to some mad nob twiddling.

Review: France meets the Balkans on this tasty double-up from two of deep bass music's finest, most forward-looking operators. Von D takes the wheel first: a deliciously stately kick stomps along unhurried as a thick layers weave in and out of the mix with cosmic allure. Egoless switches mid-journey with a much darker design. Again, the pace is slow but the energy and weight is undeniable as the rusty sound bass groans under the pressure of it all. Review: Get comfortable, light something fragrant and settle in for the night: Von D and Moresounds are back with more dub-wise dancefloor selections. Ragga/dancehall MCs Murray Man and Ganja Tree star on headline attraction "Firm & Strong (Disco Mix)", a hot-stepping, dub-fuelled dancefloor romp that sits somewhere between deep dubstep and the 4/4 stomp of UK steppas. The track's dancefloor dub roots are explored further on "Firm & Dub", whose ricocheting, delay-heavy musical flourishes ride an even tougher variation of the duo's killer groove. "Strong Dub" is, as the title suggests, an even wilder and more high tempo dub style revision that sounds like a mid '90s Iration Steppas jam.

'Dem Tuff' lights the fire with bulbous kicks, wafting flutes and snake-like percussion as K and D lock in for a 2am heads down stamper. On the A-Side Digital Mystikz' Coki contrasts Cartel's smooth delivery with his trademark jackhammer bass, delivering a deliciously rough and heavy remorking.. Review: It seems fitting that the hundredth and final volume in the "FabricLive" mix series should also be its most hotly anticipated. Coming from heavyweight heroes Kode9 and Burial - whose previous back-to-back mix for Mary-Anne Hobbs' show eight years ago has reached near mythical status. The album is a wonderfully full-throttle and mixed-up affair, with the shadowy bass lieutenants giddily flitting between quick-fire sections focusing on South African gqom, footwork, Juke, vintage hardcore, early jungle and more contemporary dancefloor experimentalism, each broken up by typically blazed and paranoid ambient interludes and the occasional surprise selection. There's a lot going on throughout, but that only adds to the fun. In other words, it's a triumphant finale to a landmark mix series.

Review: The superb Om Unit label has assembled a mighty fine crew of subheads to serve up their own interpretations of a load of Om Unit originals for this great new double album Acid Dub Versions II. Stylistically this is as diverse a collection as you can imagine given all the tracks operate within a similar dub grounding: some artists like Yushh keep it deep, cavernous and empty, while Hodge lays down his pumping rhythms and runs them through with echo hits and driving acid. VIVEK's take on 'Bristol Theme' is another dubstep doozy that rumbles along with the smell of THC thick in the air and the Nadia Struiwigh remix of 'Electroacidspringwater' is an eerie way to close a fine collection.

Review: Hessle Audio's baby faced production genius David Kennedy effectively uses this Fabric Live mix to sign off the Ramadanman pseudonym that has delivered so many classics of recent times. FabricLive 56 should be seen as a wider celebration of the many disparate strains of forward-thinking bass music that populate so many screen inches and record shop shelves. The 30 track selection expertly weaves through everything from dubstep, future garage, stripped-back post-rave and UK funky to next-level electro, noughties bruk, tropical beats and heavyweight 808-workouts. The impeccable mixing, action-packed vibe and heavyweight tracklist (MJ Cole and Wiley, Addison Groove, Joy Orbison, Pinch, Girl Unit, Mala etc) combine to make something very special indeed a lesson in 21st century beats and bass from one of the scene's brightest stars.

Review: Since 2010, Zeb Samuels' Deep Heads imprint has been on a mission to prove that dubstep can be as deep, melodious, evocative and musically rich as any other electronic music style. This second label compilation - featuring two unmixed CDs, and a bonus DJ mix from Phaeleh - continues this approach. Via a range of previous Deep Heads releases and previously unheard cuts, Samuels and company prove that dubstep can still be sub-heavy and floor-friendly, whilst embracing the sort of rich, jazzy chords, tactile electronics and soulful elements often found in summery deep house and Rhodes-laden downtempo productions. There's much to admire, including killer cuts from Geode, Synkro, Submotion Orchestra and Mercy, whose two-step inspired "Serrana Love" is sublime.

Review: Individually, Pinch and Mumdance have been responsible for some of the most forward-thinking bass music of the past year, with the former's Cold Recordings pushing the darker techno-inspired sounds of the 130 axis and the latter leaving everyone else in the dust with his twisted takes on grime and UK club music. On this mix CD for Pinch's Tectonic Recordings, the pair team up for a B2B session filled with exclusives from themselves and like-minded producers like Alex Coulton, Logos and Ipman, which joins the dots between the past, present and future of the scene. If you were worried that bass-focused music had run itself into a 4/4 shaped hole, fear not - this mix is the next step you've been waiting for.

Review: Given dubstep's evolution of late, it can be difficult to find anything fresh. On this latest volume of Tempa's Dubstep Allstars series, scene veterans Silkie and Quest attempt to resolve this poser by joining the dots between the sound's past, present and future. So, there are bursts of roughness and the odd dubwise roller, but for the most part Dubstep Allstars 9 is a lesson in the deep, soulful and jazz-flecked end of the style. Most of the cuts come from Silkie and Quest's combined back catalogue, as well as the slick fodder put out by Mala on his Deep Medi imprint. That's not a criticism, though; by mining such a relatively narrow seam of material, the duo ensures that the mix has a smooth coherence that makes it hypnotically addictive.

Review: Having initially sprung into life back in 2005 to provide an outlet for dubstep productions by members of Bristol's bass music community, Tectonic has since developed into a must-check hub for heavyweight floor fillers across a range of bass-fixated genres. The label's shift in recent years is amply demonstrated by this latest Tectonic Plates collection, the first since 2009. Demonstrating label boss Pinch has lost none of his deft A&R skills, this quadruple vinyl has some relatively traditional dubstep from the likes of Tunnidge and Ginz rubbing shoulders with typically juke influenced 808 pressure from Addison Groove, while Goth Trad indulges his inner acid. Elsewhere Hoya Hoya alumnus Illum Sphere brings some electric warmth with "Promise A Secret" whilst 2562 and Kevin McPhee continue their efforts to frustrate the genre police with excellent results.

Review: Elevator Music is the best example of the cross pollination between dubstep, grime, house and techno that is becoming more and more prevalent over the last few months. If nothing else, Fabric's first instalment of this new series proves that dunstep doesn't reach its limit with warbling baselines peppered with hazy atmospherics.

Although bass is certainly the name of the game, it is bass that reaches the feet passing the mind first. Not just a reaction to the bass and beats, there is an intelligible and refined sense to the artists and music that feature on Elevator Music. There are warm baselines reminiscent of some of garage's darker moments aligned next to percussive elements of funky house or the bold and brash energy of techno and grime.

Fittingling for Fabric, most of the tracks on this compilation are dancefloor focused. Amid the previously un-released tracks of Elevator Music we are treated to a diverse mix of palettes, again mirroring the vibe of Fabric's club, and the bass heavy genre as a whole which gives it a strong appeal to fans of each sub genre without diluting the ethos to any.

Elevator Music is more than your average compilation and way more than just a collection of tracks. It is a representation of the styles and influences of a sub genre of music that takes in, uses and borrows from a host of already established tastes. Like the Fabric dancefloor itself, Elevator Music embraces all it can, regardless of genre, to remain fresh, new and exciting

Review: A project that has taken over a year to come into full fruition, Scientist Launches Dubstep Into Outer Space is an ambitious attempt by Tectonic boss Pinch to bring dubstep's primary influence into the forefront of our collective consciousness once more. The album sees King Tubby's protege, engineer extraordinaire and dub pioneer in his own right, Hopeton Brown aka Scientist, rework twelve exclusive and previously unreleased tracks from the contemporary dubstep landscape and put them back into the context of their heritage. Released as a 4xLP package, it's a stunning and evocative opus of work, featuring tracks from influential artists such as Kode 9, RSD, Cyrus, Guido, Mala, Shackleton and of course Pinch himself. Essential.

Even the classic standard bearers such as Jakes are bringing curious 4/4 momentum in amidst the sparse, dread filled pressure, while Guido pivots off of the plush musicality of his album to create an utterly broken symphony on "State Of Joy". There are a lot of different ideas floating around the whole compilation, and yet everything holds together with the deep-rooted soundsystem mentality that has always defined Tectonic as a shining example of what dubstep has always meant.

Akkord pair Synkro and Indigo, Jack Dixon and Djrum are a few of the names that have gone on to wider success after featuring on the Electr*c series so there's always a certain cachet to being picked here. It's nice to see such a broad range of styles covered here too with the twelve tracks covering introspective arrangements, kaleidoscopic hip hop, hyperkinetic footwork-Drum & Bass hybrids, 808 heavy house jammers (Deft's "Breakdown" is a particular highlight) and other forward thinking bass-focused flavours.

Highlights abound, and they start with the stunning single from Hatti Vatti. "Simple Words" says it all; a delicate, emotive two-step treat, it sets the tone for the whole collection. Dig deeper and deeper and you'll find myriad surprises and delights... From the trembling piano tinkles and spooked sound design on Nuage's "Farenheit 17" to the bellowing subs and slippery kicks on Nuage's D&B track "Fair Question" via the sharp old school detuned synth stabs on LeStR's "Vapour" and slinky breakbeat wriggles of LM1's "Journey". This latest collection gathers the best of the label's singles output from the past 12 months. Dark Sky, Benjamin Damage & Doc Daneeka and Cosmin TRG all represent - highlights include Phono's technoid UK garage killer "Abbey Road", Marcel Dettmann's prickly atonal techno bomb "Deluge", and Shed's "RQ-170", an experimental piece of 160BPM dubstep which sounds like Drexciyan explorers picking through the sandblasted remains of a dried up underwater city.

Arriving on just one disc this time round as opposed to two, the fourteen tracks nevertheless features productions from DVA, Morgan Zarate, Cooly G, Jessy and Burial among other Hyperdub regulars, who are joined by the vocal talents of Dam-Funk, Fatima and others. Review: Back in 2010, Peverelist's Punch Drunk label released the Worth The Weight compilation, a collection of hard to find classics from Bristol's dubstep scene. In the years that have passed, dubstep has mutated, and so has Punch Drunk, with the classic dubstep sound giving way to something equally as likely to feature elements of house, techno and experimental music. It's this direction explored in the Worth The Weight Vol. 2: From The Edge, a 12-track compilation featuring tracks from the city and beyond. While Hodge and Tessela represent swung house and techno hybrids, Bass Clef and Ekoplekz are on hand to provide some strange analogue deviations, while Kahn and Zhou represent the city's Young Echo collective. With Pev himself, Andy Mac and Kowton delivering a remix of the classic "Roll With The Punches", this is an essential compilation for anyone with even a passing interest in the past few years of bass-centric UK music.

Here, they take a different approach, asking a bulging collection of D&B artists to offer-up tracks in non D&B styles that have influenced them over the years. It's a decent idea, and the results are by and large excellent. Highlights include a Roots Manuva-ish hip-hop excursion from Undersound & Intermet ("The Weather"), an immersive deep trip-hop salvo from Duoscience ("Your Eyes In My Memory") and a thrilling blast of samba-jazz from Oliver Ferrer and Michel Palazzo ("Thanks George"). There's also a thrilling piano lament from Undersound ("Thinking of You"), which recalls some of the terrific downtempo work of deep house producer Aqua Bassino.

Review: Khaliphonic represents a rich seam alongside sister label ZamZam Sounds, carrying forth vital modern iterations of dubwise music from switched on artists the world over. As such, compilations like these are a perfect primer on who's out there doing great things, whether it's Bristol duo Titus 12 & MTF, Japan's Undefined or West Coast veterans Systemwide. There are plenty of ideas and styles explored here, from melancholic synth steppas to trad-school echo chamber immersion, but the constant is a staggering high quality. If a label should be a trusted stamp of authority, then Khaliphonic have their role nailed. Essential sonics for any dub-minded explorer.
