Wanawake (B-STOCK)
Cat: SWAMPX 1 (B-STOCK).
Review: ***B-STOCK: Outer sleeve torn and corner creased, but product in perfect working order***

It's easy to see why Loefah snapped up this single for Swamp 81. For starters, bass-heavy beat-maker Sumgii has already contributed a number of killer missives to the label's digital catalogue, and "Wanawake" contains one of his fattest beats to date - a sparse, warped, sub-heavy affair that sits somewhere between regular hip-hop and 21st century grime. Then there's the fine bi-lingual English/Swahili rap that sits atop it from Nah Eeto, a rising star of Kenya's blossoming underground. Her style and delivery is distinctive and on-point, working in perfect harmony with Sumgii's killer backing track. Loefah naturally supplies the obligatory remix, placing Eeto's vocal atop a crunchy bed of hip-house style James Brown breaks and stirring synthesizer chords.

Deep Dark & Dangerous Trilogy Part 1: Deep
  1. Sepia - "Voodoo" (5:59)
  2. Taiko - "Rise" (4:25)
  3. Oxossi - "No War" (5:03)
  4. Shadow People - "Painted Red" (4:11)
Review: Truth's triple-D stable celebrate 60 releases with an epic release "Deep Dark & Dangerous Trilogy". This is the first of a series of EPs, it's focussed on the deepest tendrils of the label and it's just a sliver of the 29-track action. Sepia opens with a beautiful, heart-heaving lament "Voodoo" before Taiko lures us into the graveyard for some shadowy mischief on "Rise" before Oxossi gets aggy on the pipes and harmonica with "No War". Finally we see the return of Truth and Youngsta's Shadow People project as Lelijveld's hazy tones brings us to a cosy close on "Painted Red". Precision emotional sonics.

Systematic Error EP
Cat: CRUCIAL 027. Rel: 11 Feb 20
  1. Systematic Error (4:42)
  2. Hello (4:12)
  3. Iridescence (4:13)
Review: Sleeper and Youngsta together on three concrete jams; you already know how heavy these are going to be. "Systematic Error" takes the lead with a sinister acid narrative that bubbles ominously before the bleeps rise to an ultimate euphoric stand off. "Hello" takes things to a much deeper, stripped back playground giving the ricocheting radar and big belly bass fills stacks of room to frolic. Finally "Iridescence" brings in the synths and brass for an emotional finale. Crucial and powerful pieces of work from two scene dons once again living up to their name.

  3. You Can Run Much Faster (4:05)
  4. You Can Run Much Faster (Ourman remix) (4:08)
Review: Barely a month has passed since German bass artist Soukah gave the world the powerful 'Deadly Snakebite' but now he returns with his debut on Gnischrew's burgeoning Sub Audio. Two originals, two versions; 'Life Without Meaning' is a sobering, contemplative piece led by a decaying arpeggio and distant, glitchy rhythmic textures while 'You Can Run Much Faster' hits with a lighter note; skippier breaks and a misty but ultimately hopeful piano roll. Meanwhile on the remixes, Kodama adds another four minutes to 'Life Without Meaning', flipping it into an unhurried 10 minute narrative while Ourman dices up the piano and twists the focus on 'You Can Run Much Faster' where things aren't quite as misty but the hope has turned into a much strong emotion. Get up and running 1today.

Review: Old Raves End is the debut long player from Bristol based trio Swarms. Consisting of 11 intricately constructed and richly textured tracks, this is a remarkably assured debut. The album is Bristol through and through, owing a great debt to its musical heritage, with tracks like the symphonic "Time Lapse" evoking the expansive sounds of Portishead and Massive Attack, and the deep sub bass and sharp rolling garage rhythms of "Sterling" and "Bison" being reminiscent of Peverelist. Of course this isn't the only influence - the trio obviously has an ear for more contemporary sounds, with the deep sub bass and sharp rolling garage rhythms of "Sterling" and "Bison" reminiscent of Peverelist, and the eerie use of vocals in "T-1000" brings to mind Burial. But this is most decidedly not a dance album, instead begging to be listened to headphones to truly appreciate the delicate nuances of their finely crafted organic sound.
