Trax (12")
Cat: MH 005. Rel: 18 Sep 18
  1. Trax (5:36)
  2. Just A Dream (6:29)
Review: Fragrant frequencies from New Zealand: newcomer Scent makes his official 12" debut on soundsystem celebrating Aussie imprint Modern Hypnosis with two beguiling modern dub cuts. First up is the pneumatic stamper "Trax" where the prominent beat patterns are offset by a slightly off beat warped stab to create a fun but focused marching sensation. "Just A Dream" plays the consummate foil as Scent takes us much deeper into his psyche by way of slo-mo sci-fi drums and swooning, star gazing chords. Beautiful.

  4. Shadow People - "Painted Red" (4:11)
Review: Truth's triple-D stable celebrate 60 releases with an epic release "Deep Dark & Dangerous Trilogy". This is the first of a series of EPs, it's focussed on the deepest tendrils of the label and it's just a sliver of the 29-track action. Sepia opens with a beautiful, heart-heaving lament "Voodoo" before Taiko lures us into the graveyard for some shadowy mischief on "Rise" before Oxossi gets aggy on the pipes and harmonica with "No War". Finally we see the return of Truth and Youngsta's Shadow People project as Lelijveld's hazy tones brings us to a cosy close on "Painted Red". Precision emotional sonics.

Nikolai Reptile (12" + postcard)
Cat: TRP 026. Rel: 05 Sep 19
  1. Nikolai Reptile (3:38)
  2. Ochen (4:55)
  3. What About Me (4:57)
  4. Mortal Talking (4:31)
Review: It's hard to think of a DJ with the global profile of Nina Kraviz who runs a label as underground and innovative as trip. The latest comes from Shadowax, who has previously contributed to the label's compilations but now makes her full label debut. Unlike much of the frantic and frenetic material trip has dealt with in the past, this EP slows the tempos and explores more moody and hypnotic techno. Opener "Nikolai Reptile" is a super slow motion and dub rhythm with searching synth lines gently riding up and down the scale, while "Ochen" recalls the icy minimal perfection of Daniel Bell. "What About Me" has spoken word mutterings and paranoid, pressurised kicks that hurry you along and lastly "Mortal Talking" is a flurry of hyper-speed drums and synth loops to fully flip you out.

The Path (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: RARE 10. Rel: 23 Oct 18
  1. The Path (4:48)
  2. Haunted (4:40)
  3. Sigil (5:35)
Review: Rarefied bring Sibla & Zygos together on this positively stinking piece of wax. Neither party a stranger to the label, and both armed with a particularly prominent sense of wonk and grit, the result is a triptych of grizzlers that will melt the pants of every member in the dance. "The Path" is pure electricity whomping back and forth, oozing over the kicks. "Haunted" is pure static, rusty chimes and occasional screams before the toxic bassline bites its way into the blend a little later than usual. "Sigil" closes the show with more of a rolling groove, hypnotic vocals and more beautifully pranged out textures. Rarefied bang on the money once again.

Tempa Allstars Vol 6 (double 12")
Cat: TEMPA 051. Rel: 15 Oct 10
  1. Skream - "Rollin' Kicks"
  2. Icicle - "Anything"
  3. FaltyDL - "Sunday"
  4. Benga - "I Come From London"
  5. SBTRKT - "Sleep In Tokyo"
  6. Alix Perez - "Metric"
Review: Volume Six of Tempa Allstars collects contributions from some of the underground music scene's pioneers and leading lights Skream. "Rollin' Kicks" begins the EP with a tapping drumbeat and a Breakage hued sonic palette (circa "Open Up") which is a million miles away from Magnetic Man. D&B-turned-dubstep minimalist Icicle steps up with "Anything". Crisp, acerbic breaks feature heavily, perfectly calculated beats and a futuristic touch. Falty DL adds a funky touch with "Sunday" as chirpy bleeps and bellows of bass underpin the fidgeting rhythms here, with notable sunny, upbeat vibes in the synth work. Benga injects a dose of humour with the ticking percussive lisp and robotic chant of "I Come From London" driving things along into a hypnotic state of sentiency. SBTRKTs "Sleep In Tokyo" is all broken, funked up beats, warm keys and delicately textured rhythms. Alix Perez brings the EP to a close with "Metric". Deep, atmospheric crackling, crisp SFX and rumbling subs roll along with dark menace. A superb finale to one of the finest releases in the Tempa Allstars series so far.

Militant Focus EP (limited 12")
Cat: CRUCIAL 026. Rel: 19 Nov 19
  1. Shudda (3:44)
  2. Militant Focus (4:39)
  3. Franklyn (5:34)
  4. Fish Tea (4:11)
Review: Sleeper returns to his own Crucial imprint with his most substantial EP this year: "Militant Focus". As you'd expect from the bossman, it's a broad smorgasbord. "Shudda" sets the agenda in the classic trippy head-bending style we've come to expect from the man while the title track lives up to its name with its gruff battering ram bass scuffs. Flip for a quick Sunday afternoon drive in the warp vortex on "Franklyn" before Sleepy packs us off to bed with a nice cup of "Fish Tea" where the bassline jumps like a salmon moving upstream and the swing slithers like a hoodwinker sunfish. Focus on what's important.

Cat: CRUCIAL 027. Rel: 11 Feb 20
  1. Systematic Error (4:42)
  2. Hello (4:12)
  3. Iridescence (4:13)
Review: Sleeper and Youngsta together on three concrete jams; you already know how heavy these are going to be. "Systematic Error" takes the lead with a sinister acid narrative that bubbles ominously before the bleeps rise to an ultimate euphoric stand off. "Hello" takes things to a much deeper, stripped back playground giving the ricocheting radar and big belly bass fills stacks of room to frolic. Finally "Iridescence" brings in the synths and brass for an emotional finale. Crucial and powerful pieces of work from two scene dons once again living up to their name.

Dark Arts (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: MEDI 108. Rel: 05 Mar 20
  1. Dark Arts (4:03)
  2. Hebrew Flip (feat Rider Shafique) (3:29)
  3. How We Move (4:55)
  4. Binural (feat Surreal) (4:11)
Review: Having built his reputation via a handful of fine EPs on Scrub A Dub, Foundation Audio and Natural Selectas, deep dubstep specialist Somah debuts on Deep Medi with his most high profile record to date. He sets the tone with title track "Dark Arts", where ethereal pan-pipe sounds, echoing vocal snippets and ricocheting percussion sounds ride a steppers style beat and a suitably weighty bassline, before joining forces with Rider Shafique on the hazy and soulful vocal number "Hebrew Flip". Turn to side B for the twin attractions of dubbed-out shuffler "How We Move" (look out for what we believe to be dialogue snippets from The Wire) and the hot-stepping late night bustle of "Binural" featuring Surreal.

Ambitions EP (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: SUBALT 015. Rel: 11 Apr 18
  1. Ambitions (feat Ill Chill) (4:08)
  2. Gelato (4:42)
  3. Standard Strain (feat Saule) (4:54)
Review: Los Angelenos Subtle Mind have been making not so subtle waves in the US bass scene for quite some time. Needless to say, Austin and Paul's debut release on Subaltern Records brings in a different style to the imprint with a flavorful and melodic yet weighty selection on the Ambitions EP. The title track features the rhyming of Ill Chill and truly rolls deep - this is proper west coast vibes with the sunroof down and spliff in hand! On the flip, be prepared for a massive bassline on "Gelato" complete with wonky synths and trap style hi-hats. Finally, things take a slightly more moody turn on "Standard Strain" (feat Saule) probably due to the addition of that snarling sub bass frequency, but mellowed out by those sampled vocal textures atop - a nice touch.
