Fantomatique
Fantomatique (hand-stamped 10")
Cat: FAVX 005. Rel: 28 Jul 20
Fantomatique (5:06)
Vox Dub (5:07)
Review: If you're looking for some "militant dubstep bass weight" (as the accompanying hype sheet calls it), then we'd heartily recommend this limited-edition outing from Foundation Audio founder Chad Dubz and occasional label artist Quasar. They hit the ground running with creepy, atmospheric and spaced-out A-side "Fantomatique", where fizzing electronic noises, dubbed-out synth sounds and frankly foreboding audio textures drift around a tweaked wobble style bassline and head-nodding deep dubstep beats. Flipside "Vox Dub" is even more dubbed-out, with mangled, mutilated male vocal samples and echoing background chords weaving in and out of another bassbin-bothering, mind-altering late-night groove.

Mortal Kombo #1
Mortal Kombo #1 (180 gram blue vinyl 12" + stickers)
Cat: 786MK 001. Rel: 12 May 21
Mr K & DPRTNDRP - "Suppression" (dub) (5:11)
Quasar & Nova - "Witchcraft" (dub) (5:09)
Saule & Centauri - "Tyrant" (5:10)
Teffa & Sound Unknown - "Hide & Seek" (4:42)
Review: Dubstep doesn't get much deeper than the tunes on this meaty new Various Artists collection from 786. The title suggests it is the start of a new ongoing series, which is music to the ears of bass fiends everywhere. Mr K & DPRTNDRP kick off with 'Suppression,' with its menacing energy and churning hits, while Quasar & Nova team up for the excellent low end wobble and playful sense of funk that is deeply embedded in the rhythm of 'Witchcraft.' Saule & Centauri's 'Tyrant' is a pressurised cut with a freaky vocal and edgy synth stabs over woden hits. Sparse but atmospheric, it's just one of four killers here. The last is the drilling bass weight of Teffa & Sound Unknown's mystic 'Hide & Seek.' Great stuff.

CCCLXXII Vol 1
Cat: BASS 372002. Rel: 18 Feb 20
PTF1987 - "ID" (3:59)
Q100 & DMG - "OddBells" (3:39)
Bisweed - "Akhinea" (4:20)
Slin - "Blue Springs" (3:21)
Review: Dial 'D' for dank. Estonian area code crew the 372 return with the second slab of homegrown beats. PTF1987 takes the lead with mystical strings, sudden glitches and crispy beats before Q100 & DMG provide the most leftfield funk jam of the set in the form of the schizoid, bell-chiming oddity "OddBells". Meanwhile on the B, Bisweed brings the darkness on the super-spacious "Akhinea", all warped finger clicks and cyborg funk, while Slin slides down the curtains with a percussive head-twister as rolling sticks start to intertwine with the bass like some possessed puppeteer. 372... You know what to do.

Apparitions EP
Apparitions EP (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: SYSTM 046. Rel: 28 Jun 23
We'll Talk Later (5:34)
Apparitions (5:32)
Play Mu Steez (5:33)
The Revisit (with Jamal) (6:03)
Review: Quartz is a bass music don who hails from Wales and manages to stay true to his original sound while also innovating whether making drum & bass or dubstep. He has been on top form for years, frankly, and this new outing on System Sound is a suitably heavyweight sound for a heavyweight vinyl pressing. His mesmeric arrangements brim with life and energy while the low ends do their work. His tempos slow slight here for a set of tools that are resolutely unconventional yet affective. The glassy low end wobble and lithe drum manoeuvres of 'Apparitions' is the highlight for us.

Alchemy Burn
Cat: SYSTM 043. Rel: 16 Aug 22
Alchemy Burn (5:28)
Mountain (4:50)
Review: Elliot Quartz continues to stretch his legs beyond the drum & bass parameters he's best known for with his debut on V.I.V.E.K's System imprint. Already gracing the System event line-ups on more than one occasion, now he backs it up with two juicy 140 steppers. 'Alchemy Burn' is a hot shoe shuffle, all springy kicks and twisted textures weaving in and out over the top. 'Mountain' hits with even more of a lively splash as the drums take on a jazzy sensibility and a powerful swing while humid atmospherics and swathe intensely in the mix. Grab it while you can; this Welshman never fails to impress.

Reminiscence Dub EP
Cat: IFS 036. Rel: 16 Apr 24
Reminiscence Dub (4:41)
Space Riddim (3:55)
Molotov (feat Causa) (3:50)
Review: Three exceptional low end delights from Parisian artist Quasar right here on Infernal. Each cut as unhurried as the last, there's a latent swagger coded deep into each groove as the Frenchman does his thing... 'Reminiscence Dub' is a gloopy, dubby strut in deep space, 'Space Raiders' hits with a deep bounce that recalls the likes of Roots Manuva's hopeful anthem 'Witness' while 'Molotov' (with Causa) brings the EP to an explosive finale. Unforgettable.

Badlandz
Badlandz (12")
Cat: FAV 019. Rel: 18 May 21
Badlandz (4:41)
Submersible (4:56)
Laniakea (4:52)
Primal Instinct (5:27)
Review: Bristol's Foundation Audio return this week, with another one by the prolific Parisian Remy Gallet aka Quasar bringing his deep vibes to the party on the Badlandz EP. As you would expect, it is a largely meditative affair, with the title track setting the theme nicely on the A side. A sparse and minimalist arrangement lets those fully expressive bass frequencies play centre stage, while 'Submersible' (much like the name suggests) is the closest thing we've ever heard that could be described as aquatic dubstep. On the flip, the booming dub antics of 'Laniakea' scream no more Mr Nice Guy, while the complex and layered riddims of 'Primal Instinct' close it out.
