DUPLOCXX PT2A
DUPLOCXX PT2A (white vinyl 12")
Cat: DUPLOCXX PT2A. Rel: 18 Jan 24
11th Hour & Hebbe - "Access Denied" (4:38)
Mikrodot - "Sun God" (3:45)
Merricat Black - "Tricky Bizzness" (4:26)
Losco & ONHELL - "Carnal" (2:58)
Substrada - "Stonk Face" (4:37)
Wraz - "Wriggle" (4:12)
Review: Duploc continue to fly the flag for true-skool dubstep with their digital output and a renewed run of vinyl pressings. Duploc Blaxck Tapes 2.0 originally dropped back in 2022 and the tracks from the likes of Hamdi, Hypho and ENiGMA Dubz were instantly getting picked up by such respected selectors as Youngsta, Sicaria Sound and Riz La Teef. It's not hard to see why, given the label's declared focus on "the heavier dubstep sound" with incendiary results. If you want to test some subs with the gnarliest 140 gear around, this record is all you need.

Cuss Cuss
Cuss Cuss (TMSV remix)
Review:  Recently revisited by RSD on the Broken Beats album, Horace highlight "Cuss Cuss" gets two superb reworks from DJ Madd and TMSV. The former goes for a starker, more traditional dub vibe, allowing the original riff to play a lead role in the arrangement while the rich steppy beats drive the groove forward. TMSV flips for more of a traditional dubstep flavour with a more prominent halfstep and uglier bassline. Both versions are incredible. No cussing please...

Drone & Hyroglifics - "Faded" (4:49)
Drone - "Spear" (4:00)
Review: Drone is on fire right now. His debut with 1985 was a real standout and now he links up to great effect with rising d&b talent Hyroglifics. The serve up some straight sound system heat with 'Faded,' a high pressure cut with deadly bass and deft synth designs that ride over the stumbling kicks. ON the reverse of this heavyweight 180g slab is 'Spear.' It is an icy and haunting stepper with some distant radio transmissions, lurching bass and bright melodic daubs to bring a little colour to the all consuming rhythm, powerful stuff on every level.

Hal Grover - "Carlotta's Dream" (Orbit mix) (8:01)
B+A+D - "Moon, Sea & Waves" (8:10)
Review: Thew newly minted Newmont label makes a bold statement of intent here with a pair of no nonsense tracks. Hal Grover's 'Carlotta's Dream' comes as an Orbit mix - which may or may not be a reference to the seminal Morley techno night of the same name - and it voyages to outer space on tightly woven breaks, with smeared pads and a melancholic bassline ON the flip side, things slow right down in the hands of B+A+D -for their 'Moon, Sea & Waves.' It's spacious, heavyweight and eerie with coarse hits and far sighted pads.

Can't Hide (3:29)
Can't Hide (RSD remix) (3:41)
Review: Following a couple of impressive collaborative releases last year, Bristol bass-head Halcyonic returns to action on debutant imprint Firmly Rooted. This time round, veteran roots-man Junior Dread handles mic duties, delivering a smoky vocal on "Can't Hide". The track itself is rolling, bass heavy and heady, with ricocheting electric piano notes and dub-wise horn lines rising above a riddim that sits somewhere between digi-dub and dubstep. On the flipside, Bristol stalwart Rob Smith dons his familiar RSD alias to deliver a dancefloor-focused deep dubstep revision that peppers a weighty groove with dubbed-out horn blasts, disconnected vocal snippets and mind-mangling angular electronic pulses.

Young Blood

Young Blood (3:22)
Witness (4:52)
Review: Since making his debut under the Headland alias a couple of years back, New Zealander Gene Wariner has showcased his brand of deep bass-weight vibes on such labels as Innamind, Well Rounded Dubs and, most recently, ZamZam. Here he adds another label to his already impressive discography via a tasty two-tracker on System Music. Opener "Young Blood" begins with scene-setting spoken word samples and the introduction of a twinkling synthesizer melody, before the Kiwi producer slams in crispy dubstep beats and a warm, weighty bassline. While impressive, it's flipside "Witness" - a properly smoky, dub-wise exploration rich in pulsing, razor-sharp analogue electronics, speaker-busting bass and clandestine aural textures - that hits home hardest.

The Judge (4:42)
Camino (3:01)
Strays (4:12)
Review: Mean Gene Headland returns to the perennial dub stable Innamind with three more bone-shaking beauties. "The Judge" slams the hammer of justice down and declares us all innocent as an accordion chord weaves around middle eastern strings, "Camino" puts its foot down and drives us into the horizon on a road made of naked drums under a sky of dreamy harpsicord arpeggios while "Strays" summons us all back to the courtroom and declares us guilty in one fell moody, groaning bassline swoop. Court dismissed.

Watch Out (ENiGMA dubz remix) (5:06)
Wayside (with Melle & Mr K) (4:51)
Lemon Twist (with Melle & Mr K) (4:15)
Review: Belgian dubstep label Duploc have been releasing two-track singles since 2015, and the imprint now announces the launch of a new 12? vinyl series. The first EP features no less than label resident Hebbe who was introduced to to the label in the beginning of 2018 and signed to Crucial Recordings and Artikal Music shortly after. Now, he returns to the label for the first volume of the new Dupplates series. "Watch Out" is a grimey deep dubstep journey in the U.K. tradition, and ENiGMA Dubz steps up next to deliver an incredibly stunning remix. On the flip, the off-kilter groove of "Lemon Twist" (with Melle & Mr K) closes out the EP in style.

Low Land Dub (4:41)
Jah Seen Rastafari Dub (4:41)
Review: Label co-owner Hebbe is up next on Basskruit with his first solo EP, featuring two heavyweight cuts. As the title suggests, Low Land Dub emphasizes the unity of the Belgian and Dutch 140 BPM scene. The title track is some of the deepest and darkest dubstep we've heard in quite a while to be honest; a proper meditative bass ritual to reach peak enlightenment. More paranoid vibes abound over on the flip, with the futuristic bass soundscape of "Jah Seen Rastafari Dub" and its minimalist riddims throughout.

Cat: NXTLVL 013. Rel: 29 Jan 21
Quiche (4:14)
Looters (3:11)
Review: The latest single from 140 mainstay Hebbe Versteegh is certainly a fetching and enticing item, not least because we've never seen a yellow, marbled 10-inch before. Of course, it's the music that really matters, and we're happy to say that both tracks here are genuinely impressive. A-side 'Quiche' is both weighty and tuneful, with fluttering, almost oriental synthesizer melodies and creepy electronics rising above echoing chords, an action-packed bassline and deep dubstep beats. Flipside 'Looters' is darker and creepier in tone, with intoxicating electronics enveloping an ultra-deep bassline and a snappy, echo-laden beat.

Up Town Dub (J Kenzo remix) (4:46)
Review: Flying Dutchman Hebbe touches down on at DUPLOC once again with two powerful slabs of 140 dark matter. 'Up Town Dub' is all bubbles, grooves and swaggering beats with plenty of funk while 'RSNT' takes us right the way through town and deep into to industrial district where walloping machinery pummels us into the grit. J:Kenzo rounds off this exceptional set with a dreamy-yet-tense take on 'Up Town Dub'. The only way is up.

Down Town Dub (5:36)
Tumble (5:35)
Review: Hebbe has been busy for a few years now dropping subliminal twists on the dubstep formula for labels like Unity Through Sound, Subway and Artikal. You can hear the ghosts of DMZ and the like haunting these playful yet immersive cuts, not least on A side wobbler "Down Town Dub". The bassline snakes its way around the echo chamber drums to marvelous effect, and there's just enough weirdness in the space between to make this sound really special. Don't overlook "Tumble" - it may spit and snarl more aggressively, but once your head is locked in, there's just as much deep meditation to be enjoyed from this banger.

Industry Standard Dub (3:44)
M1 Dub (3:46)
Review: Hebbe jumps back on the controls of his and Pieter DUPLOC's Basskruit imprint with two thick, treacle-like jams. 'Industry Standard Dub' belies its tongue-in-cheek title within seconds of kicking off. A worm-like oscillating freak-out, it's riddled with groove and funk he's shown on previous jams like 'Quiche' and 'Looters'. 'M1 Dub' meanwhile has a dirge-like Commodo style darkness that digs you deeper and deeper into the ground with every trippy shot and fill. Heavy Hebbe.

Beware (4:41)
Review: Destination Tokyo: Helktram follows up their epic Trusik EP with a return to Subaltern with another trio of left-minded 140 tactics. "Recoil" takes the lead with a fat brass staccato riff that pummels in and out of a trippy guitar loop, "Mineral" raises the target sights higher and aims for your jugular with hypnotic techno persistency while "Beware" finishes Helktram's latest chapter with odd-ball glitchy mischief. Trust us, this whole EP lives up to its name... Recoil and reload.

Helktram - "Alter" (6:00)
D-Operation Drop - "Fibers" (4:08)
Ill_K - "Bomb" (5:21)
Shu & Zygos - "Landfall" (4:42)
Review: Four years into their story, deep dubstep stalwarts Subaltern Records has decided to drop its first compilation style EP. Fittingly, Kaleidoscope Volume 1 begins with a contribution from a new addition to the label roster, Helktram. The producer's "Alter" is a rolling and undeniably heavy affair, with creepy horror strings and clandestine textures rising above crunchy snares, punchy kick-drums and a restless analogue bassline. Label regular D-Operation Drop serves up a skewed slice of vintage, spaced-out dubstep ("Fibers"), before Berlin-based Ill K dives deeper via the lo-fi drum hits, decaying audio textures and heavy sub of "Bomb". Finally, Shu and Zygos join forces for "Landfall", a Burial style dark ambient/dubstep fusion cut that reverberates at a slower than average tempo.

Tru (4:38)
Addict (4:25)
Review: New name, but a very trusted source. Mr K reveals his new alias Hijinx on Jack Sparrow's Navy Cut by way of three mind-bending bass jams. 'Venom' starts the march, all grumpy and full focus on the curmudgeonly riff, before 'Tru' takes us up a few gears. Skippy and mischievously unpredictable in the drums, there's a slo-mo jungle menace running throughout before we collide head-first into the humungous finale 'Addict'. Tense and foreboding, Hijinx isn't playing around here. And neither are Navy Cut as all profits go to the Ben Raemers Foundation.

Review: Having slayed us with a whole slew of dispatches in the last year or so on the likes of Unchained and Vandal, not to mention his own fine line of self releases, HOST now comes correct on Sherelle's firebrand Hooversound label. Dedicated to the rave, it's another deadly body blow... 'Survive' sums up the angst of the time with its warped 808 cascades, '3D Passive' takes foundation elements like the pitched up vocal, skippy breaks and scuffy, gruff production to 2020's dark standards and Om Unit seals the deal with an exemplary remix. Hoover this one up quick sharp.

Review: HYPHO's debut on the Wheel & Deal Records label is as darken and menacing as it is brilliant. 'Muharib Skank' kicks off in menacing fashion with an eerie late night street vibe, low end oscillations and well placed vocal samples. 'Affektion' is more lush, with nice chill melodies thinking over a tricking drill beat. It's deep as you like. 'Moody Marge' then brings more nocturnal sounds with drifting keys and stuttering drums and bass, and 'MS20 Skank' rounds out with icy hits and swaggering drums that swing low. A well-crafted and emotive bass EP.

Review: Deep Dark & Dangerous snap up debutant signing Hypho here. The talented producer created the tunes on this EP during lockdown and next to his beats, four guests all step up to make fine features. 'Dust Of The Devil' opens with an ice cold sound built on bottomless low ends and with some fine flow from Slowie. Strategy is the guest on 'Dirty Water' and his rapid bars add real energy to the sparse and deadly rhythm. 'Suffering' is another fresh cut with digital effects and punning kicks then the twinkling keys and Digital-dub of 'Stellar Transit' (feat Xakra & Finnoh) close in style.

Review: North UK bass fusionist Hypho continues to push his sound into all kinds of interesting spaces between breaks, dubstep, trap, grime and hip-hop with this vinyl version of last year's 'ENV029' EP for Encrypted. Four tracks heavy, 'Badman Tune' with Logan Olm takes us on a tropical grime flex before 'The System' takes lead with supersized subs built strictly for the massive rigs. Review: Codex is a brand new various artists series from 1985 Music. The opening four tracker features esteemed label boss Alix Perez alongside crucial bass craftsmen Hijinx, Epoch and Ebb. It is Perez himself who opens the proceedings with earth shattering bass quakes and drilling synths on 'VTRN' before Hijinx explores a wide open and cavernous underground space detailed with ticking hits and warped synth reverberations. EBB's 'Ill Rest' is another masterfully deep dubstep wobbler with a signature saw both synth ripping up the groove and Epoch's 'Beastmode' is a bustling, bristling joint that keeps you on your toes.

Review: Undisputed godfathers of UK dubstep Horsepower Productions are back with another full length; their first in 12 years since 2004's To The Rescue LP. As Tempa themselves put it succinctly: "Crooks, Crime & Corruption" draws from numerous facets of the UK underground and further afield in order to take you on a compelling, wholly immersive journey. Highlights include "Justify" featuring Harry Keyworth which sounds like Jah Wobble versus Ry Cooder, the deep spiritual house of "Bak 2 NY" or "Kurisoity 6" and the business as usual, street level bass therapy as heard on the raw "Change" or the pure fire junglist anthem "Criminally Insane".
