Tempa Allstars Vol 8
Cat: TEMPA 104. Rel: 30 Dec 15
Acre - "Messages" (5:59)
Epoch - "The Vile" (4:42)
Cliques - "AUT" (6:30)
Fracture - "Excalibur" (4:37)
Youngsta & Distance - "Track 5" (5:38)
Biome - "Closed Minds" (6:06)
Review: The Allstars compilation series from Tempa has proved a fine litmus test of the UK underground since it was launched in the heady early days of dubstep circa 2003. An eighth volume rounds out Tempa's 2015 business and this broadly diverse selection is proof enough that bass music is in fine health. Following his superb debut LP for Tectonic, Acre opens the doublepack with the stuttered, swung sound design of "Messages", and from here Tempa run the gamut of the UK bass scene. Epoch lays down raw and doomy steppa vibes with "The Vile", Cliques offers up futuristic footwork of "Aut" whilst both Youngsta & Distance and Biome bring the 140BPM heat.

Temple Duel (5:06)
Temple Dub (5:02)
Review: Blimey, if this isn't major meeting of musical Midas minds then we don't know what is. Alter Echo, E3 and Headland all collaborating with legendary dub flautist Diggory Kenrick. "Temple Duel" sets the scene in deep underground chambers, untouched by the sun. Reverb space is our only guide and ritual combat is the only way out as we make our way through subsonic 808 bass foundations, a near-industrial mid-range bass guitar groove, stiff snares, stick-fighting percussion and Diggory's torchlight melody. A truly fluid hypnotic narrative that arcs through the dark, if you're looking for an even foggier route flip for "Temple Dub" where the torch is extinguished and you have nothing but your sonic wits to take you home. Only Diggory knows if you make alive or not...

Caski - "Lunatic"
El-B - "Romp"
Review: Some two years since their last emission, El B's Ghost imprint returns with a double dose of dark side swingers weighed down by the sheer pressure of the bass! There might be little information to hand about Caski (other than a remix credit for Man Recordings from 2009) but "Lunatic" is perfectly titled and perfectly poised to cause dancefloor mayhem with rave specific stabs aligning to bucking percussion and screw face inducing sub bass in gleefully obnoxious fashion. It makes for the sort of track you hope there isn't a club photographer nearby when it gets dropped. EL B's contribution "Romp" is positively serene in comparison with detailed bouncing steppah rhythms (some lovely cymbal touches) engulfed by a jagged, schizoid mid range garage frequency.

Chad Dubz & Biome - "455" (DJ Madd remix) (4:40)
Review: For the latest volume in FatKidOnFire's vinyl series, boss man Will Benton has handed over the reins to Foundation Audio founder Chad Smit AKA Chad Dubz, a producer who can usually be relied on the deliver the sub-heavy goods. He begins by joining forces with Biome on '455', a laidback but weighty slab of punishing dubstep creepiness, before uniting with Eddy Seven on a fine fusion of bassline style warped bass and crunchy post-dubstep beats ('Strictly'). He goes solo on 'Nilaari', an aggressive and angry slab of dancefloor dubstep peppered with 8-bit electronics, before DJ Madd delivers a sparse, stripped-back and insanely sub-heavy re-wire of '455'.

Review: Full 140 futurism right here from burgeoning London label Cutcross as four exciting new-gen artists from across Europe flex their sub muscles. Conzi lights the smouldering fire with 'Kway', a smoking slab of roomy dubstep primed strictly for big systems. Ehua follows with an even deeper piece of club bass as she weaves startling atmospheres between spacious percussion. Elsewhere Belgium's Zygos fires off some heavy sirens before Jamiu (a UK artist who used to be known as Perspective) brings the whole EP to a juicy and joyously unsteady finale with the rattling percussion and heavy dub echoes of 'Rasaks'. Cutting edge bass.

Review: The Deep heads crew have put together some superb sounds for the third volume of their Deep Heads Dubstep Volume 3 and now they are issuing plenty of the cuts on a series of tasty samplers. Danny Scrilla kicks this off with some classic urban soundscapes and reflective synths and Escapism Refuge's 'Traps' then gets a nice bump on. Sukh Knight's 'Havoc' introduces some nice frosty low end wobble and Synpal & Ras Stimulant close down with the midnight shuffle of 'Ital Being.' This is cutting edge stuff that shows there is plenty of life in the dubstep sound yet

Review: For The Heads bring some moody sounds on their fourth EP, with the mysterious E S P behind the beats. This is their first release of the year and only a fourth since 2018, but it hits hard. 'Blank' is a low end wobbler with pitch shifted vocals turned into a synth sound. 'Mycelium' is another sparse and mysterious one with curious leads and bright chords underpinned by hefty sub bass. 'Limits' is a marker, more lurching track with whirring machine sounds and crashing hits while the title track rides on the most bulbous baseline of the lot. It's brilliantly late night and urban.

Stalagmite (Tetrad remix) (4:55)
Review: E3 makes his debut on Gourmet with two almighty constructions; "Stalactite" is a wave of trippily textured bass that just laps and laps over you relentlessly, pushing breath out of you with every wash. As the name suggests, "Stalagmite" has a much lower centre of gravity with a much more stern tone and restrained sense of menace. Remix-wise E3 frequent partner in grime Alter Echo switches out the bass drama for a swinging dancehall riddim and a sparse, teasing groaning bass hook while Tetrad gets his 4/4 dub on with "Stalagmite". Another fine feast.

Review: Some 18 months have passed since Eastern Roots' last release, so it's good to see them back in action and in such fine form, too. The focus here is largely on the A-side hook-up with roots scene stalwart I-David. In both its original and Dub Mix variations, "Freedom Fighter" is an exercise in floor-friendly dub reggae rich in Augustus Pablo style Melodica solos, meandering delay trails, ricocheting percussion and heavy sub-bass. Over on side B, Eastern Roots goes solo on two versions of the more exotic and electronic soundsystem dub workout "Elements", with the decidedly trippy and mind-altering Dub revision being our pick.

"Surface Tension" is an absolute steam roller of a jam with the bassline unfolding its flabs over and over until you're covered in slimy low-end fat. Review: Riddim Tuffa's Echoboy follows up releases on Moonshine and Solway Dub with this exceptional triplet of soundsystem jams on Soul Ex Machina. Cosmic, meditative but kicking like a sub-loaded mule, there's a gentle progression throughout the EP. 'Roots Of Dub' immerses us like a Smith & Mighty blueprint, 'We Lock Down The Block' is a little more dancefloor focused but still heavily restrained and pared back (similar to Tipper at his deepest and most star-gazey) while finally 'Chords Trip' closes on a much more traditional digi dub tip. Taking off where his debut on the label - 'Jahova' - left us in 2022, once again we're hurled head first into the bass scoops in a manner of ways - 'Fire' flings us in feet first, allowing us to skip and bounce over thick treacle low-end, 'Dem Time Dance Ram' spins us round before pushing us in so we're completely out of control and at the mercy of the percussion while 'Lofi Dub' chucks us in head first and tells us to mind our head on those wubs. Review: It's been a strong year for Balkan badman Egoless who pulled in a whole new field of ears with his insanely on-point ska cover of Benga & Coki's "Night". "I'm From The Bakans" is a great showcase of his leftfield weight. The title track is an ardent reminder that we still have heaps of room to experiment in drums and textures with rhythm combinations that sound like no other. "Psychonautilus" is powered by creepy dreams. All wonky, foggy and freaky - if Nicolas Jaar did dub, he wouldn't sound too far from this. "Uck Foff" keeps us in the dense mists as thick atmospheres are broken but a strangely shuffling beat and unpredictable mechanical bass tones. No one is doing it like Egoless.

Review: Croatia's Ognjen Zecevic, otherise known as Egoless, has been absolutely smashing over the last three years, with releases for imprints like ZamZam Records and Deep Medi Music instilling his sound at the top of the contemporary bass game. To that point, here he is on Youngsta's Sentry Records, home to producers like dBridge, Caspa and Gramz - so you know the quality is on point. The title tune "Decolonize" is an Eastern riddim, mashing up tough dub-steps with flutes and chimes from the Levant; "Global" keeps that narrative going with some Middle-Eastern melodies blended up and filtered-down into a heady, percussive groove for the ultimate mood-switcher.

These killer cuts showcase the artists signature reggae centric garage, as well as his back for dance floor ready bass and drum workouts that sound something like the bastard child of UK funky and tribal, drum driven dubstep. Review: Kenzo's Lion Charge machine fires up for a new year with this spectacular slab of modern dub from Croatian producer Egoless. "From Dust To Dub" is a tightly coiled bouncer with a bassline so bulbous technically it requires diet advice from its GP. "Broken Tape Dub" keeps its feet in the same dance but its head is miles away thanks to tripped out mourns and outer planetary textures of the high and low variety vie for our attention. It Goes (Benny Ill remix) (5:49)
Review: While his Six Sunsets partnership with Drumterror has become a staple feature of the UK bass music scene over the last five years, Luke Chipperfield-Outing has not released that many solo singles as Ekula. For that reason, this rare outing on Encrypted Audio is a significant release. Title track 'It Goes' is particularly potent, with Chipperfield-Outing peppering a weighty, post-dubstep rhythm with cut-up male vocal samples, UK garage style synth stabs and pleasingly glassy-eyed musical flourishes. The producer's UKG influences are also evident on 'Club Banger', a fittingly titled number that smothers a hardcore style breakbeat in female vocal samples, pulverising sub-bass and speed garage-inspired organ stabs. This hardcore revival vibe continues on the EP's closing cut: a rave-igniting revision of 'It Goes' from UK bass stalwart Benny Ill.

The UKG legend first hinted at Bison's return almost 12 months ago, slipping out a brief clip of the heavyweight roller "Club Music (I Keep The Club Moving) on his Soundcloud - that it's taken till now for it to surface on wax can be forgiven seeing as Bison has been dormant for over a decade. Stableface (Macc remix)
Review: Bristol hub Soul Motive scored a massive coup in enlisting Punch Drunk boss Peverelist to remix "Stableface", one of the standout tracks from Clouds Of Moments, the 2010 debut set from Lithuanian experimental dubstepper Eleven Tigers. That they choose to complement it with two further remixes is tantamount to treating us, with both Dark Sky and Macc on board to further re-contextualise the cracked atmospherics. In the hands of Dark Sky, "Stableface" is twisted into a brooding dark side steppah with subtle hints of jungle pressure pervading the lower reaches, the 50 Weapons trio playfully teasing with the vocal before dropping in a bassline that can only be described as rude. On the flip, Macc showcases his enviable drumming skills with a heavily cinematic roller of a remix dominated by those rumbling, live rhythms.

Review: "Stableface", one of the standout tracks from Lithuanian producer Eleven Tigers' debut album "Clouds Are Mountains" found itself pride of place on this 12" release from Soul Motive. Opening with an extended intro of cracked Burial-like atmospherics, the track soon gains a life of its own with its minimal 2-step beat and cracked vocal samples, complete with the kind of intricate melodicism of Four Tet. On the flip side Bristol's Peverelist turns in a fine reworking of the track. Taking the already sparse original and extending its panoramic reach even further, he concentrates on the micro qualities of the rhythms, opens up huge holes in the original's deft tapestry and creates a masterful reworking which brings out the dubstep within its DNA.

He's in typically deep, dark and clandestine form, albeit with an added sprinkling of sci-fi sounds and intergalactic vibes. He hits the ground running with 'Area 51', where sparkling, high-register melodies, echoing spoken word snippets and alien electronics ride punchy beats and a rumbling bassline, before opting for a more immersive and atmospheric sound on 'Into the Ground'. Badminded, categorised on our system as 'deep dubstep', should actually be seen as the doorway between, or rather the key, between the distant planes that are electronica, new age and dubstep. Right, so we know what you're thinking, that's weird, right? But if you listen to the depth and richness of these eight slices of brain dynamite, you'll surely agree with us that Epoch's music goes way beyond the tight barriers of dubstep, and lands the listener into a wholly new sort of planet. You have to give it a go for yourself, what we can say is that it's warmly recommended.

Having carved quite the reputation on the likes of Keysound and his own Egyptian Avenue imprint, here he delivers two stark slices of ridiculously deep, leftfield bass. "11:38" is as fractured and scratchy as it gets. All wonky, processed rim shots, ghostly noises and disjointed vocal shots, it's a strangely immersive experience from the off. "Numatik", meanwhile, is the more dancefloor destined: strutting with a simple-but-deadly one note bass warp while more alien textures flicker and flex in the background, there's a heavy groove to be found deep in the sonic mist. Finally Gantz steps up with a remix of "Steppenwolf". Nodding with a persistent percussive hook, you're instantly intertwined by the distant organs and even further away vocal elements. Heavy stuff.

On The Fence (4:28)
Almost Eight (4:41)
Dust (5:42)
Review: Erstwhile joker and Jo'burg journeyman, Escapism Refuge returns to Deep Heads off-shoot Smokin Sessions with three crystal cuts: "On The Fence" digs deep into classical dub mentality with its wandering sub and ebbing/flowing pads while "Almost Eight" plays counterpoint with a much darker dominant bassline and beats that lollop so much it could be a Dead Prez instrumental. "Dust" settles this smouldering sonic affair once and for all with cascading chords and a more garage-inclined drum pattern. Bliss.

Review: Smokin' Sessions is a winning label. Nuff' said. Each and every time the Z Audio sub-label drops a new 12" it means that we're in for some quality bass tactics forms the best and freshest talent out there. Escapism Refuge returns with his second EP for the imprint, dropping yet more contemplative dubstep vibes in the finest of traditions. The Compa remix of the title tune "Misfit" kicks the single off with a hazy, off-kilter beat structure glazed in dreamy, cinematic melodies that recall the winter days. On the flip, the main man's two originals flow smoothly between one another; first with the gentle tones of the broken "Misfit", and then with the glitchy, sub-heavy rhythm of "Stuck". Badman vibes.

Wet Wipes (4:37)
Review: Earlier in the year, South African rising star Escapism Refuge delivered a debut album laden with deep sub-bass, heady aural textures and killer dancefloor rhythms. There's plenty more atmospheric, rumbling fare on offer on the producer's latest three-track EP, too, with the focus is naturally on "Wet Wipes". While the original version, featured on the B-side, delivers an attractive fusion of drifting, Arabic-sounding vocal samples, undulating music box melodies and crispy dubstep rhythms, it's Biome's cinematic, synth-laden A-side revision that's really getting us hot under the collar. Also impressive is bonus cut "Don't Mind Me", where ambient chords and head-in-the-clouds melodies rise above a skewed-but-punchy rhythm track.

Corked (5:40)
Teleport (5:38)
Review: Chow down! Joe Nice invites Poland fusioneer EshOne over to Maryland for guest chef duties. Two courses: the main dish "Corked" is a sloppy, soupy sub brew with minimal percussive sides, its sweet bass aftertaste on every mouthful countered by a sinewy electro sharpness. Dessert is "Teleport", a deconstructed sonic souffle cooked purely with melted machines and strange angles. Whirring and whirling into the deepest, most unknown corners of flavour country. Bon appetit.

Petroglyphs
Number Nine
Hot Sauce
Review: Elk Beats mainstay EshOne jumps over to the ever-impressive Artikal imprint for three wildly percussive slices of body-minded bass music. Deep but physical, this instantly grabs you with its energy and delivery; "Petroglyphs" lives up to its name and carves a rich groove out of sub bass stone with an industrial-strength sense of tribalism. "Number Nine" takes this demonstrative drama and develops it with space-gazing synth paranoia. "Hot Sauce" closes the show with a steppier, clickier riddim that develops more gradually and is guided by a trippy, warped tone throughout. Genuinely unique.

Old School Methods EP

Hybrid
Sounds (feat J-One)
Sphynx
Lost Methods
Review: here's something rather intriguing and exciting about this EP from newcomer Etch. Like much of Keysound's recent output, Old Skool Methods consists largely of bass tunes clocking in around 130 BPM, with clandestine rhythms, murky basslines and snapping snares that come accompanied by the kind of wide-eyed, early jungle nostalgia that should appeal to both youngsters and old heads alike. "Hybrid" sets out the formula, pitching a sparse but powerful, speaker-rattling bassline against jaunty rhythms, rave piano stabs, deep atmopsherics and classic vocal samples. J-One collaboration "Sounds" sits somewhere between dubstep and classic two-step, while "Sphynx" rolls along on a wave of "Pacific 808" chords and old skool rhythms. With its pitched-down jungle breaks and paranoid mood, "Lost Methods" is pretty tasty, too.

Review: Grab it while you can! Gundam's woozy, 23rd century blues take on EVA808's gully harbinger "Empress" flew out on its first run late last year and will more than likely do again this time around. On a 12" instead of 10" this time around, even more space on the wax for those deep off grid notes to poke through. Gundam smashed this one... Make sure you do too.

Review: This one's long-overdue! Eva's Midas touch hasn't dropped one inch since she came through over five years ago, if anything she's still warming up as "IMX 005" is one of her warmest, most subtle and soulful records so far. "Exchange" takes Flowdan's raw truths about the capital and lays them down over sublime bluesy guitars and vocals, "It's Me Bitch" takes us deep into the far east on a flying carpet made of flutes and 808 subs while "Too Late" flips the trip for something a bit more purple and space age. Stunning. Grab this one quick.

Review: Music from the young Joshua Leary has been sporadic since he emerged on a wave of YouTube hype at the tail end of 2011, with only the Kings and Them mixtape and this year's one-sided Duga-3release on Record Store Day, but given he received a production credit on Kanye West's Yeezus album last year his relative silence can be forgiven. As such the Waterfall EP represents perhaps Leary's first proper release, and it shows that he has come a long way since the early days of his career. Containing four tracks that bridge the gap between jungle, hip hop and ambient music, Waterfall is both delicate and savage in equal measure, especially on the closing title track, where plaintive piano and semi-automatic snares collide to thrilling effect.

Review: Ex Pylon has remained one of the more mysterious figures within the realm of electronic music, with a trail of intrigue dating all the way back to the days gone by when Rupert Murdoch saw fit to splurge millions of pounds on MySpace. As is the way with the internet, a simple "hey guys check out my old Cornish buddy Ex Pylon" style blog post from Border Community poster boy Nathan Fake led to all manner of rumour and hearsay. Fast forward several years, it seems a happy coincidence that as the aforementioned Antipodean tycoon waves goodbye to MySpace and any notion of profit (he surely has bigger things on his plate at the moment) Ex Pylon deems fit to finally release his debut EP. Arriving on the fledgling yet already impressive Studio Barnhus imprint run by messrs Boman, Kovacs and Petter, quite why it's taken so long for Ex Pylon's debut to arrive isn't revealed and is likely to remain so.

Let's just be grateful to the Studio Barnhus crew for finally allowing the music buying/stealing (delete where appropriate) public a chance to indulge in the rewarding vision of techno Ex Pylon dabbles in. The title track "Hammerfest" opens proceedings in fine fashion, sprawling across A Side towards the run out groove in a sonic fashion not dissimilar to the arrangements that made up The Field's debut set for Kompakt a few years ago. Frosted synth lines compete with glitched out rhythms in shifting in and out of focus over stripped down drums, whilst the final ascent into the skies provides a potent end to a track which demands the needle be returned to the start. "Hoverfly" is equal in the use of glitchy rhythms, though the mood switches from euphoria to apprehension as the track digs deep into your senses with a dizzying array of kaleidoscopic alien textures burrowing far beneath the pattering layers of drums. Just when you think those textures will disappear completely, they surface to the fore with optimum speed over a snapping kick drum. It's a challenging but entirely engrossing listen. The final moments allow your senses to relax via the undulating beatless soundscapes of "Hupiter" - drawing on a multiplicity of soft melodic textures and cooing vocal samples with generally engrossing results.

Gantz - "Spry Sinister"
Gantz & El Mahdy Jr - "Rising"
Review: Deep Medi regular Gantz has developed a spotless reputation for subverted bass treatments but "Spry Sinister" is unlike anything he's ever done before. In fact it's unlike anything anyone has ever done before; swaying on a warped triplet riddim, the seasick groove is compounded by a paranoid vocal loop that persists with hypnotic venom. "Rising", a co-lab with El Mahdy Jr, sees Gantz tapping into his Eastern roots with a string-heavy half-stepper that's coated with mystic prayer calls and an unnervingly rich bottom end. Truly stunning.

Review: In the need of new energy and new solutions? Look no further than Headland and Epoch, they've got everything you need in two rather handsome - if a little floppy - formations. The title says it all - 'Flaccid Acid' - a deliciously Daliesque trip where the bassline melts before your very inner eye in the most lazy, almost sarcastic way. Chakra realigning 140 funk from the left hand side, this is exactly what Doctor Hoffman would jam to. Need a little stiffener? Flip for part two, it's got a little more poke. Turn on, tune in, trip out.

Review: Two sides, two vibes: Well Rounded Dubs get real with two refreshingly singular pieces of 140 innovation. Yung Jackson builds on his releases on the likes of Dub Tribu and Under Surveillance with this long awaited industrial strength minimal swagger jam. Sounding like it was made in the hottest part of a metal foundry while wearing an iron shirt, it's the sound of a new generation artist making a serious statement of intent. Flip for more forthright soundsystem fury from Denver's Ether as he gets his grunge on with a rough, sludgy bass riff that scuffs the beats, the gutter, its knuckles and your own purdy little features. Limited to the not-so-well-rounded amount of 297 copies, sleeping on this is not recommended.

Kryptic Minds vs Emika - "Make You Sleep"
Review: D&B-turned-dubstep duo Kryptic Minds seem to have somewhat of a predisposition towards the darker shades of dubstep with their trademark murky basslines, inky black soundscapes, haunting vocals and deep dubs. "Make You Sleep" is no exception to the rule; employing Emika's whispering lyrical prowess with heavy, solipsistic bass and rolling subs, it's another superb venture, building hype for the release of their album, due out later this year (we can't wait!) On the flip, insomnia troubling cut "Can't Sleep" (feat. Alys Be) continues the vibe with more contemplative, melodic blissed out music from the pair, rounding the release off to perfection.

El-B & Filth Arris - "Where I Live"
Review: Deliciously massive bass action right here! The mysterious Opus has taken a tiny vocal snippet from dubstep's biggest crossover hit to date and roughed it up with a devastatingly rude bassline. Robust, rotund and rolled up neatly with the right amount of funk, there is no doubt that this will be huge. Meanwhile on the B, El-B and Filthy Arris take the darkness up a notch or seven with an ode to South London. Weighty, stroppy, moody and mean, it's the perfect counter for the more sprightly vibes on the A. An incredible platter from the Ghost crew. Get to know.

Review: Codex is a brand new various artists series from 1985 Music. The opening four tracker features esteemed label boss Alix Perez alongside crucial bass craftsmen Hijinx, Epoch and Ebb. It is Perez himself who opens the proceedings with earth shattering bass quakes and drilling synths on 'VTRN' before Hijinx explores a wide open and cavernous underground space detailed with ticking hits and warped synth reverberations.
