Cliques - "AUT" (6:30)
Fracture - "Excalibur" (4:37)
Youngsta & Distance - "Track 5" (5:38)
Biome - "Closed Minds" (6:06)
Review: The Allstars compilation series from Tempa has proved a fine litmus test of the UK underground since it was launched in the heady early days of dubstep circa 2003. An eighth volume rounds out Tempa's 2015 business and this broadly diverse selection is proof enough that bass music is in fine health. Following his superb debut LP for Tectonic, Acre opens the doublepack with the stuttered, swung sound design of "Messages", and from here Tempa run the gamut of the UK bass scene. Epoch lays down raw and doomy steppa vibes with "The Vile", Cliques offers up futuristic footwork of "Aut" whilst both Youngsta & Distance and Biome bring the 140BPM heat.

At What Point Do I Stop Trying (4:12)
Review: Back in the spring, Jason 'Aether' Taylor delivered one of the more assured vinyl debuts of the year; a collection of evocative ambient soundscapes and gentle dubstep rhythms entitled Von. This belated follow-up continues in a similar vein, with the Scottish producer prioritized beauty and melodic intent over dancefloor weight. That's not to say that his beats and basslines aren't solid, it's just that what really catches the ear is Taylor's use of intricate piano figures, dreamy female vocal samples, glacial sonic textures, and mood-enhancing chord progressions. It's a blend that results in music more suited to reclined listening than over-enthusiastic dancing. When the music is this picturesque, though, who are we to argue?

Review: Scottish artist Aether emerges from the ether with some of his most spell-binding material to date. Twinkling, evocative and hazy, there's a dreamlike theme as the narrative runs throughout and we're taken down lullaby lane with woozy and wondrous results. From the startling sunrise soul of the first encounter to the poignant, lingering final goodbye, Aether's sonic imagery and consistency makes this more of a mini album than an EP. Utterly beautiful.

I Got (5:10)
Review: Numa Crew enigma Ago wishes us nothing but the best right here as we're offered all the drugs and the good luck over a satisfyingly trippy beat. Opener "Good Luck!" is peppered with smoking 808s, creepy arpeggios and more space than Professor Brian Cox's photo album, there's a reason this has been in such demand all summer. "I Got" is just as beguiling. Watch out for those Latin guitars as they wash over the booming kicks. Emotional. Good luck mate.

Your Eyes EP
Cat: SYSTM 047. Rel: 08 Dec 23
Your Eyes (5:00)
Crippling (4:38)
Eight Times Eight (5:39)
Riverwind (4:04)
Review: Coming up on Innamind, Killa Sound and Moonshine Recordings, Ago has been flying the flag for soundsystem innovation in the scene where dubstep still pushes forwards and the connection to traditional dub values remains at the forefront of the practice. It makes perfect sense he's now been snapped up by V.I.V.E.K's System label then and he arrives on the label with four outstanding cuts pushing at typical 140 forms and offering something wholly unique. 'Your Eyes' keeps plenty of space in the half-step rhythm, but the springy synth out front runs with an urgent double time which elevates the impact of the track. 'Crippling' is a more claustrophobic pressure cooker, while 'Eight Times Eight' turns out a leftfield strain of steppas before 'Riverwind's techy propulsion brings the record home in outstanding fashion.

Silverware (6:08)
Review: Long time mates but first time collaborators, Ago and Boofy link up for this exception doublet on Innamind. Two sides, two very different vibes; 'Goldfinger' is all about that spacious dubby stalk and prowl. Laced with all manner of trippy textures, it's already been a major missile at Innamind's recent bashes with System. Flip for something more of a post UKG flavour; the rattling upbeat 'Silverware'. Brash skippy drums and heaving emotions - this is already a massive tune. Grab it while you can!

Over & Out (3:46)
Review: New Zealander Akcept is arguably rather representative of his home country's unique approach to bass music, offering up a string of releases for the likes of Modern Hypnosis, Amar and Moonshine that fuse dubstep and UK dub rhythms with audible references to techno and roots music. He's at it again on this superb new single, first combining African percussion, pitched down vocal samples, deep dubstep rhythms, weighty bass and dub effects on A-side club cut "Cambridge Road". He stays closer to experimental dub territory on flipside "Over & Out", where sparse drum hits and metallic dub trails combine with an unashamedly heavy sub-bass motif and Melodica samples to devastating effect.

Review: Steppas head honcho Alpha joins forces with prolific toaster Lutan Fyah for a rootical exercise in traditional dub. With a bumping bassline and sugar-sweet vocals, it's a fantastic transitional track that's guaranteed to enjoy plenty of exposure this festival season. For added club-focussed welly (and some lovely cymbal splashes) head for DJ Madd's remix.

Review: It's been a while since Archiver launched his I & I Musik label with the "Pusherman" dub but he's back and it's a serious thing. Gravity weighs off every word Ras Tinny spits. A stern story of greed's vicious pyramid laid over some springy kicks and ebbed textures, it's an alluring attack of both thoughts and senses. Alpha Steppa takes it deeper into the dance with a heavy pressure skank on the flip. Highly recommended.

Stumble (4:40)
Review: And the winner of the best rhetorical question of the day goes to Are You Gunna Hold It Down? Blatantly we are when the sounds are this heavy. 002 for the label now, once again it's very cheeky white label business, fully anonymous in the credit department and the vibes are set extremely high. "The Woods" is an oil pneumatic machine, the likes of which you'd expect to hear on Osiris while "Stumble" hits on two sides; the ghostly graveyard overtones and that flabby old bassline undertone. Think Distance and you're in the right sonic ballpark.

Review: Four big, booming , bass heavy tracks from Swiss production and DJ duo Atrice that stand astride several genre definitions from dubstep to techno and electro. The pair pride themselves on their sound design and it certainly lends a subtle but perceptible air to the hair raising frequencies flying around on the likes of 'Backrooms' and 'Pipe Dreams', the two most obvious contenders for the dubstep tag. 'Chamber Of Mazarbul' and the more electronica-slanted 'Nulspace' are less conventional - at least by general standards if not the wonderfully wayward 'rules' of the eternally renegade Ilian Tape label - but equally thunderous and well executed.

83 Steps (5:22)
Review: Ilian Tape have been sympathetic to the sound of UK bass for some time now, but this new drop from Atrice leans even further into the pervading energy of dubstep as a source of club pressure. The Swiss duo first appeared on Ilian Tape with Q back in 2021, and they're sounding stronger than ever on this latest missive. If 'Multiplex' brings a cybernetic sheen to headsy 140, then 'Is It Warm' does similar work with techy d&b as the pair dice up breakbeats with precision and drape exquisite, shimmering pads over the ruffness. There's also space for crafty techno propulsion on 'Broke' and high-tempo trippiness on '83 Steps', making this a versatile, consistently brilliant release from a rising force in the scene.

Each one tickling a completely different side of the game and brain, 'Dream Creatures' kicks off like a bulldozer as a multi-layered bassline ploughs into the dance on a Distance style level of heaviness with absolutely no apologies. 'Shade' flips things into the future with some mind-bending drum arrangements and rhythm switches while 'Spy Vs Spy' is total tribal tension, all half time espionage and atmospheric creepiness. Stomping, yet remarkably deep and meditative, 'Monkey Brainz' will hypnotise you into submission with its blunted style of sonar transmissions. Blind Prophet & Bukkha - "Stone Dub" (VIP) (4:39)
Review: For the third volume in their Joint Forces series of collaborative EPs, Moonshine Recordings has pitted various producers against each other. DTR dominates the A-side, first joining forces with Akcept on the ultra-deep dancefloor dubstep of "Liberation Cry" (think echoing horn lines, rich sub-bass and trippy effects) before inviting Bukkha into the studio for the exotic dub cheeriness of "Hard To Explain". Bukkha returns on the B-side alongside Blind Prophet. They begin with the dark sub-bass pressure, ricocheting guitars and echo chamber riddims of "Stone Dub", before successfully beefing up the beats for the rock solid 4/4 thump of "Stone Dub (VIP)".

Review: Belgian dubstep outpost Duploc celebrate five years of support with this fittingly heavy and forward-thinking five tracker. Enigma Dubz gets real with an obscene oscillator that rumbles heavily in a way that wouldn't have gone amiss on Immerse 10 years ago, Lost take us deep into the woods on a sledge of toxic bass slurry while Bukez Finezt lets loose in the freestyle way only he knows how. The results speak for themselves as Egoless charges up LAS' "Uuha" with a whole new layer of organic instrumental funk while Foamplate flips Ago's "Why Won't You" into much starker pastures, injecting the already eerie skanker with stacks more space. Review: For Dubs Galore's 007 release they leave us shaken and stirred as label boss Von D goes toe-to-toe with two close compadres Mr K and Arta for two 10" system bubblers. 'Dem Tuff' lights the fire with bulbous kicks, wafting flutes and snake-like percussion as K and D lock in for a 2am heads down stamper. 'Let Down' takes us further into the night as Arta and Von strip the elements right back into something more authentically dub. Dreamy pads, rolling hang drums and a series of strange bass tones underneath. Sometimes the old ways are the best...

Blisteringly hot Wen serves up a blisteringly cold roller, all bubbly drums and iced-out synths, Manchester man Alex Coulton taps into the deep tribal dub psyche with his hand drum-heavy "Equilibrium", Innasound get deep on a meditative flex, Batu gets jiggy on a steppy, jaunty trip, Axh unleashes a post-dungeon stepper with a swift and uncompromising rhythm pattern and Perverse bring us to a stark, spaced out climax with the trippy "Jacobin". Four awesome examples of future-focussed bass music, Tempa have delivered a very special document right here.

Review: Tyler Myroon AKA Abstrakt Sonance has released some of his most potent music since joining Truth's Deep, Dark and Dangerous label, so hopes are naturally high for this first missive for the imprint in two years. Title track 'Ishtar' is particularly potent, with the self-proclaimed "bass music force" wrapping clandestine chords and creepy melodies around punishing dubstep drums and gargantuan sub-bass. The EP's other instrumental cuts, 'Behind Closed Eyes' and 'Nightmares', offer deeper and hazier variations on a similarly bold and aggressive theme, while the two vocal cuts - and in particular opener 'We Nuh Pay', where Killa P, Long Range and Crowell trade verses - sound like future party-starting classics.

A Song For Hope
Review: Amazingly, this is the ninth album from experimental D&B veteran ASC. Those who've followed his career to date should know what to expect; an atmospheric and all-enveloping sound that uses traditional D&B rhythms and structures sparingly, instead flipping between clandestine electronica, IDM and shuffling ambience (see the crackly opener "Spheres", which recalls his recent work with fellow experimentalist Sam KDC on the Decayed Society LP). It's a fusion that delivers real quality, from the late night '90s vibes of "Glass Wall", and guitar-laden Balearica of "Oneironaut", to the beatless beauty of "A Song For Hope", technological grooves of "Prometheus", and glitchy oddness of "Stay True".
