Viagem
Viagem (10")
Cat: CRUCIAL 024. Rel: 02 Jul 19
Viagem (5:23)
Encanto (4:40)
Review: Having soared us through the dense black marsh earlier this year, Portuguese deepsmith 3WA takes us through even swampier, intense territories with this Crucial debut. "Viagem" is like stepping into a deep boggy cave where the drips from the stalactites get heavier and the ground swallows you like quicksand. "Encanto" then hauls your keister out of there with insistent hang drum percussion and rolling kicks before blowing you dry with powerful flutes and pipes. Charmed.

Juce EP (12")

Juce (5:09)
Struggle (3:28)
Minerals (3:48)
Review: Consistent operator from the German shadows, Causa's drinking the strong juice again. Or "Juce", as the case is right here... A loose-legged graveyard strut where strange tones echo and pop out when you least expect them. "Struggle" writhes and jitters with an alien funk and some of the coolest, strangest drum fills we've heard on bass record recently. Finally "Minerals" closes the B with a wonked trip of off-grid kicks, woozy melodica and barbed electric fence textures running point beneath. Crucial by name, crucial by nature.

Cargo (3:42)
Oculus Rift (3:48)
Review: Deep space dub laced with toxic levels of funk: Foamplate makes his official debut with three really refreshing twists on contemporary bass. With its faraway flutes, squid bass and heavily textured rim shots, "7.5" is so out-there and wonky, you could imagine Roots Manuva spitting on it with ease. "Cargo" ups the spacious ante even further as prominent drum elements echo and shimmer over a stealthy sub. "Oculus Rift" brings us back to the woodwind flavours but with more of an eastern twang and cosmic feel. Essential listening: Each cut sounds like nothing else around right now.

Joken
Joken (10")
Cat: CRUCIAL 019. Rel: 26 Oct 18
Joken (4:04)
Get Them Bags (4:27)
Review: Sleeper man Alex Fox debuted the GRAMZ alias earlier in the year via a two-track 12" on Sentry Records built around paranoid sonic textures, serious bass-weight and rolling 140 BPM beats. For this 10" outing on Crucial, Fox has taken a deeper approach, ratcheting up the smoky atmosphere while retaining sizeable low-end pressure. "Joken" and flipside "Get Them Bags" are hazy, ultra-deep dubstep workouts, with both doffing a cap towards hip-hop and grime (check out the manipulated MC vocal samples on the latter, in particular), as well as the crackling sonic textures of Burial. "Joken" rolls along nicely while remaining pleasingly subdued, while "Get Them Bags" has a little more sonic strut. Both, though, are excellent.

Mad Hatter
Cat: CRUCIAL 016. Rel: 13 Mar 18
Mad Hatter (5:08)
Galata (4:58)
Review: Rotterdam's Hebbe continues his rich vein of trippy form with this debut on Crucial. "Mad Hatter" lives up to its name as it pings with warped textures that fly in and out when they're not supposed to while "Galata" stomps and swaggers with dusty eastern strings as it gradually develops a stern vocal message. Crucial by name.

Mad Hatter (Headland remix)
Cat: CRUCIAL 021. Rel: 16 Jan 19
Mad Hatter (Headland remix) (5:36)
Review: Murderation on a Jack The Ripper scale; Hebbe's creepy night stalker gets the treatment from the currently unstoppable Headland. Switching the drum sounds and adding entire caverns into the groove, letting that unique meowing murkery to really melt around the beat, Headlands maintained Hebbe's twisted creation and given it his own pranged out stamp. Drop it and watch heads explode before your very eyes.

Yen Pox
Yen Pox (10")
Cat: CRUCIAL 008. Rel: 06 Sep 16
Yen Pox (5:20)
Inland (4:12)
Review: Scant details are held on Yung Moony but it's likely he's not of this world... The beats on "Yen Pox" say as much. With their industrial hip-hop swag, they create a momentum and feeling that's seldom found on a dubstep joint. Fresh but familiar; the same approach is applied on "Inland" as stretched tones create unease before drooping into rich pools of emotion. Again with the loopy hip-hop mentality, there's a reason Gourmet and FKOF picked up on Moonstones so quickly last year.

Sharpie EP
Cat: CRUCIAL 018. Rel: 24 Jul 18
Sharpie (4:54)
Peel (3:57)
Newspeak (3:21)
Review: Following up some great ones by Samba, Hebbe and Sleeper, the UK's Crucial Sounds are back with more bass driven/street-level shenanigans courtesy of newcomer Opus. He has a seemingly intrinsic musical prowess, coupled with a knack for reaching far beyond the constructs of conventions and expectations. This sort of ravenous creative mentality has earned Opus a debut release on White Peach Records, as well as a subsequent release on Encrypted Audio. Bridging the gap wonderfully between dubstep and grime on the darkside wobble of "Sharpie", the eerie "Peel follows featuring pounding beats and immersive/textural sound design. On the flip, delve deep into the exotic on "Newspeak" where its Middle Eastern instrumentation meges with fierce breakbeats.

Fall Of Mevia (4:25)
Nightmares (3:32)
Review: Last spotted on Sleeper's Crucial a year ago, Los Angelo Oxossi returns with four more frenzied fusions. "Escher" gobbles down on classical rudiments and spits them back out in a fiery, unpredictable meld that genuinely sounds like no other, "&" pays homage to the jazz foundations while "Fall Of Mevia" takes us into deeper psychedelic pastures as a gothic arpeggio wafts and curls around an industrial strength halfstep. Finally "Nightmares" takes us out in the more experimental oceans with a twisted time signature and seasick, woozy bass experience. Like everything on Crucial, this is seriously one of a kind.

F'n (2:50)
Review: Having emerged on Encrypted Audio earlier this year, Samba (AKA Sam Bartlett) now makes his debut on Sleeper's Crucial imprint. As you'd expect from all concerned, all three tracks are uncompromised in their forward-glaring stance. Highlights include the mangled bell magic and pulsating subs and the live electricity buzzes and almost waltz-like thirds of "F'n". Three of a kind.

Shudda
Militant Focus
Franklyn
Fish Tea
Review: ***B-STOCK: Record ever so slightly warped with light surface marks/smudges, but otherwise in perfect working order***

Sleeper returns to his own Crucial imprint with his most substantial EP this year: "Militant Focus". As you'd expect from the bossman, it's a broad smorgasbord. "Shudda" sets the agenda in the classic trippy head-bending style we've come to expect from the man while the title track lives up to its name with its gruff battering ram bass scuffs. Flip for a quick Sunday afternoon drive in the warp vortex on "Franklyn" before Sleepy packs us off to bed with a nice cup of "Fish Tea" where the bassline jumps like a salmon moving upstream and the swing slithers like a hoodwinker sunfish. Focus on what's important.

Le Goonz (4:41)
Greens (5:17)
Smoke & Mirrors (5:11)
U Take L's (5:07)
Review: Crucial by name, crucial by nature. Bossman Sleeper reminds us who woke he truly is with four more singular spells. "Le Goonz" is a fine balance of string-twanged mysticism and orchestral drama, "Greens" is your full five-a-day for the rest of your life thanks to its wholesome trippy cascades and grunting humanised rhythm elements, "Smoke & Mirrors" is a classic graveyard prowling business while "U Take L's" takes us right back down into the distorted slurry where nothing but kicks and distorted bass run the game. Wake up.

Dark Things (3:38)
X Rated (3:00)
Review: Devine dank dealings; Sleeper is more woke than ever as he teams up with DLDW8 for a toxic, slimy cave wall-slapping swaggerer. Take care of the loose switchy kicks on "Dark Things" as we skip and stumble through the dripping textures. "X Rates" flicks on the easy mode with a smouldering sermon that's creepier than a graveyard birthday party. Weighty's barbed bars hanging off Sleepy's every gutter-munching kick, this is a partnership made in the dankest corners of Hades.

Sleeper & Mesck - "Ghettonomics" (3:30)
Sleeper & Mesck - "Fukka" (3:28)
Review: Crucial by name... Sleeper's imprint hits another massive milestone with this immense collaboration-session. Sleeper and Mesck are the most consistent names, delivering tag-team slews like the rasping mangled siren and loose drum weird-out of the title track and the droning, dirge-like eastern trip out "Fukka". Thelem also plays a crucial role on the trapped out gangbanger "Strawberry Cough" and the minimal, gun-loading paranoia session "Squeeze Off". Shots fired.

Systematic Error EP

Systematic Error (4:42)
Hello (4:12)
Iridescence (4:13)
Review: Sleeper and Youngsta together on three concrete jams; you already know how heavy these are going to be. "Systematic Error" takes the lead with a sinister acid narrative that bubbles ominously before the bleeps rise to an ultimate euphoric stand off. "Hello" takes things to a much deeper, stripped back playground giving the ricocheting radar and big belly bass fills stacks of room to frolic. Finally "Iridescence" brings in the synths and brass for an emotional finale. Crucial and powerful pieces of work from two scene dons once again living up to their name.

Out There (4:55)
Magnetic (feat Smilodon) (4:12)
Review: Tripsmith OG, The Widdler continues to spin his strange sonic webs across the 140 landscape. This time making his debut on Sleeper's Crucial, it's another strange and eerie bassline brew from the New Jersey producer. "Venting" dusts off the pipes and blasts them over a wobbled-out and slimy dungeon aesthetics, "Out There" hits with much more of a grumpier decay bassline and a sombre, mildly pranged out tone thanks to those strange sirens in the background. "Magnetic" closes the show with Smilodon on collab duties. Woozy and warped, these beats are so off-grid they've made their own compost toilets and drink rain water. Deliciously far out.
