It's A Shame

  1. It's A Shame (3:41)
  2. It's A Shame (version) (3:13)
Review: Born in 1970, in Montego Bay, Jamaica, Allan Crichton (aka White Mice) is a graduate of three sound systems - Sugar Minott's 'Youthman Promotion', Jammy's 'Hi Power', and his hometown 'Ticka Muzik'. His first break came at Sun Splash in 1985, when he and Little Kirk were called on stage to perform with Tenor Saw. Recording at King Jammy's and Channel One studios, with Junior Delgado at the controls, over next the few years Mice let off a series of records amongst the very deadliest of digital reggae - nearly all on his brother Blemo's Intelitec imprint, out of Miami.

Topp Tonn
Topp Tonn (10")
Cat: AMFIBIA 16. Rel: 22 Dec 14
  1. Topp Tonn
  2. Topp Tonn (version)
Review: Next year sees both Tapes and DJ Sotofett debuting on Honest Jon's in one shape or another, and the pair close out 2014 with this rather fine 10" for the lesser spotted Sex Tags Amfibia operation. Those adventurous selectors out there wanting some house paced sonics laced with digidub fx will be all over Topp Tonn, and anyone that's been in the dance whilst Sotofett or Fett Burger were at the decks will probably be familiar with these two cuts. As usual with a Sex Tags release, this one is all about the curveball moments like where a killer synth line appears out of nowhere up top and leads "Topp Tonn" down a whole different path. In true dub tradition, the flipside Version scoops out the guts of the track for a skeletal riddim perfect for the early morning dancers.

Split
Split (yellow vinyl 7")
Cat: HK 019. Rel: 26 Aug 20
  1. Moto Nyama (2:35)
  2. Batufitina (3:29)
Review: Stand by for a seriously deadly EP from Hakuna Kuala. It might only be a 7", but both tracks pack serious heat. Swordman Kitala is a Hakuna Kulala resident and one of the most creative dancehall Mcs in Uganda, and here he offers his vision of future hall madness in association with Japanese producer Scotch Egg under his new Scotch Rolex monicker. "Moto Nyama" is all terror fuelled bass, wherein claps and paranoid hits, and "Batufitina" is an exercise in banging drum programming and vocal acrobatics of the sort you don't hear all too often.

Dance Africa
  1. Nadine Sutherland - "Dance Africa" (3:21)
  2. Echoslim X Nicko Rebel X Mr Williamz - "Higrade Skanking" (3:43)
Review: Nicko Rebel Music are back to serve up more top shelf skanking material after their debut release sold out in quick time. The EP introduces a host of debutants including Nadine Sutherland, Echoslim and Nicko Revel who sit next to the more established Mr Micah Williams, a Necessary Mayhem mainstay with skills to burn. Sutherland's "Dance Africa" is a rootsy roller with flabby bass and big trumpet lines accompanying her vocal work, which celebrates the glory of Africa, while B side "Higrade Skanking" from Echoslim X Nicko Rebel X Mr Williamz does exactly what it says on the tin.

Pull Up Dat
Cat: WONDER 158. Rel: 01 Oct 20
  1. Poirier & Red Fox - "Pull Up Dat" (2:30)
  2. Poirier & Patexx - "Unity & Strength" (2:49)
Review: Poirier's new album, Soft Power, is a vibrant and eclectic affair, with the long-serving Canadian producer twisting a wide range of musical influences - think Afrobeat, deep house, hip-hop, Latin beats, dub and dancehall - into thrilling new shapes. This limited edition seven-inch single boasts one of the album's more forthright, club-ready cuts: mutant dancehall number 'Pull Up Dat'. It's undeniably potent, with semi-regular collaborator Red Fox spitting bars over a riddim rich in 90's US garage organ sounds and punchy machine drums. On previously unheard flipside 'Unity & Strength', Patexx offers a positive, auto-tune-enabled message of love and strength over the same weighty Poirier backing track.

  4. Mikey General - "I Love You" (version) (3:30)
Review: Top Ranking Sound bring together a wealth fo dub masters for this four track 12". Frankie Paul opens up with a love struck ode that rolls on natty piano chords and is detailed with acoustic riffs to keep things moving. Yellow Man's "Gaze" slows it down, with echoing claps stacked up on top of each other and the sweet piano chords retained. Mikey General then steps up with a version, "I Love You", a tune to tug at the heart strings thanks to the lyrical depth and yearning. A final version of this one closes out a lovestruck package.

  4. Thriller U - "Give Me Collaterals" (version) (3:31)
Review: Top Ranking Sound continue their fine run of form with another big hitter this July. Frankie Paul leads the charge with "Don't Pressure Me" and its rugged drums, tumbling bass and hooky riffs. all with some summery steel drums layered in to finish things off in Caribbean style. Pinchers take the second slot with the more natty and physical "Grammy", which has a real edge to it as the drums roll on. Things slip into more digital territory on Thriller U's "Give Me Collaterals", which has oodles of echo and reverb to flesh out the bottom end. A second version offers another fresh perspective on this crisp dub.

Cat: ERC 104. Rel: 28 Sep 20
  1. Be Thankful (7:57)
  2. Be Thankful (Lexx Discomix) (7:24)
Review: Emotional Rescue are turning their attention to King & City, a label that dealt in the UK-rooted take on reggae, lovers rock, at the turn of the '80s. First up is this sublime cover of William DeVaughn's evergreen, much-covered soul classic 'Be Thankful For What You Got'. This take is breezy and hopeful, but still shot through with a certain sense of longing in the tight riddim backing up the sweet vocals. On the flip, Emotional draft in one of their favourite remixers, the mighty Lexx, to deliver a disco mix that teases out the original and amps up the dub-outs for maximum groove satisfaction.

Side Trakx Volume #6 (green vinyl 7")
Cat: AOS 610. Rel: 28 Oct 19
  1. Love Me Like Cooked Food (3:11)
  2. Secrets (feat Andre Foxxe) (2:17)
Review: Alex "Omar" Smith traditionally uses the "Sidetrakx" series to release music that doesn't fit with his club-rocking house and techno 12" series. Even so, few would have expected him to use the latest edition - the sixth in total - to offer up a dancehall cut featuring Jamaican singer and MC Nardo Ranks. "Love Me Like Cooked Food" features Ranks chatting and singing in Patois above a dancehall "riddim" rich in rubbery bass guitar, echo-laden machine drums and flanged guitar riffs. It may be a curveball, but it's rather good. Over on the flip, "Renault used car salesman" John FM guests on a lo-fi R&B/soul workout that also includes some deliciously tongue-in-cheek, poodle perm-sporting soft rock guitar solos.

Heartical Respect
Cat: CGI 12009. Rel: 07 Oct 20
  1. Heartical Respect (3:36)
  2. Sounds For All (Dubspect) (3:43)
Review: The late, great Sugar Minott apparently recorded 'Heartical Respect' back in the mid-1980s with dancehall producers George Bell and Priest, though this is the first time it has officially been released. Minott's slick, soulful and rootsy voice is the perfect accompaniment to the track's punchy dancehall drums, sub-heavy bassline, clipped guitars, dark synth-strings and piano stabs. It's a fine track, all told, and it seems remarkable that it has remained unissued - or at least in the UK - for so long. The flipside dub-style 'Version' is naturally rather good too, with Bell and Priest eschewing Minott's vocal in favour of even weightier sub-bass and tougher dancehall drums.

How Long (7")
Cat: DSR 18375. Rel: 20 Jul 20
  1. How Long (3:44)
  2. How Long (version) (3:28)
Review: Culture began his career in the dancehall while still at school and his rare ability even at that age led teachers to advise him to pursue a career in the Jamaican recording industry. He soon went on to pick up plenty of tips and tricks from working with King Tubby before establishing his own name. He even moved to London for a while and continued to hone his craft and "How Long" proved to be one his biggest success along side "After So Many Years" and "Original Days." It's a still futuristic sounding cut with sci-fi effects and crisp hits as well as that trademark vocal work.

Drifting Forwards EP (140 gram vinyl 12" + insert & sticker)
Cat: WSR LF3. Rel: 27 Jul 20
  1. IZ 200 (6:09)
  2. Drifting Forwards (4:37)
  3. C Rota (6:45)
  4. Mondo (6:18)
Review: Well Street continues to be a hotbed of innovation in the cloudy climes of contemporary UK techno, with label mainstay Loop LF returning for his third EP. The record opens in subliminal style with the restrained, heavy-stepping sideswipe of "IZ 200" before melting into "Drifting Forwards," a richly dubbed-out dreamscape of clicking and popping percussion and sparkly chord drops with a purposeful swagger around the rhythm section. The B side kicks off with the nervy minimalist techno abstraction of "C Rota", where sound design plays a vital role alongside cyclical rhythms in creating a truly transcendent yet strikingly sparse sound. "Mondo" closes proceedings with one of the more forthright tunes on the record, following a strident if still proudly leftfield groove that captures a little '90s downtempo funk and gives it a cosmic, hi-def refit.

Cat: MISSYOU 013. Rel: 15 Jul 20
  1. Melting Pot (4:15)
  2. Melting Dubb (4:34)
  3. Physical Love (4:14)
Review: Anicia Banks, Joy Tulloch, Judy Mowatt and Sharon Tucker were Light of Love and their "Melting Pot" has been not only expensive but hard to find since it first landed in 1979. Even the 1984 reissue is difficult to come across so Miss You have done us all a favour with this one. The original is a hard riddim with popping synths and effects making it bubble along nicely while the fame vocals up top bring joy and rousing trumpets take you ever higher. The dub melts you away with staggering, shuffling drums and then "Physical Love" brings some 80s vibes with a mix of dub, disco and pop all shimmering their way into your affections.
