Review: After the success of the 2 Late 4 Love EP, Roy Of The Ravers returns to Emotional Response with a double LP with a deeper perspective, experimenting in ambient and drone textures, lucid techno travails and acid interludes.
Recorded between 1997 and 2017, the album was pieced together over the last six months after Roy's archives were first feared lost and then found. Approached by the label to release a follow up with something more introspective and personal, it was discovered that a recent move to a new studio had led to over 20 years of music being misplaced after it was believed they were mistakenly dropped at a local charity store. However, deep in a box of what were thought to be patch cables were in fact the decades worth of hard drives and here presented, is a sample of those lost recordings.
The nature of the music is introspection, eschewing the acid beats and white noise for a personal encounter between man and machine. The orchestral opening of the title track gives way to the submarine beats, pulsing TB303 and gliding hats of Robinson College 10 to set the outlook to come. Even with the scattering A Dim And Distant Past waking lulled senses, the melodies and feel all lead to a pause and reflect rather than jump and shout.
This is continued with the haunting drives of Bounce Erec and Oriental X0X-Press; the twisted, warped jams of The Weber Traum Boat Pt.3, Ichi and Roland Corp Labs 05; and the beautiful, heartfelt odes in Sade Lost Theme, The Clock House Pt.2 and closer, Nemesis '01. The album's melodic nature hums and shines as CS (6x8) appears as much a centre piece as a alternative consideration to the acid tinged, club bangs of Roy's releases to date.
A surprise package maybe, but in the rolling, word of mouth phenomena that was Emotinium II, all this and more was sensed and so White Line Sunrise II, spreading across 12 songs of contrasting moods, is a further affirmation that there is something good and worthy of exploration

Review: There's no shortage of great electro around at the moment, but lest we forget Carl Finlow has been dishing out some of the finest for decades now. In many ways 20/20 Vision is his spiritual home too, so it's great to see him imparting his skills for a fresh long player of razor sharp body poppers loaded with robo-funk. From charging opener "Apparatus" to freaky wriggler "Carbon Deposits", restrained creeper "Components" to punchy melodic workout "Ampere", there's a lot to enjoy and so much musical detail to absorb across this record. As if we'd expect any less from Mr. Finlow.

Review: Exit planet earth by 20/20 Vision is a new series of various artist vinyl releases, selected and compiled by ralph lawson. There is a truly heavy weight selection of artists involved in the project and the first edition 'carbon' leads with contributions from two of the most influential electro producers of all time The Hacker and 214, who both deliver unforgiving hard hitting excursions to future worlds. On the other side Reedale Rise sheds some light with 'Lux' before the record is beautifully closed with an uplifting composition for space travel - 'The Gap' by Derek Carr. 3. Strack
  4. Horrorshow (Thom Yorke remix)
  5. Strack (Zomby remix)
  6. Strack (Low Jack remix)
Review: If dystopian, otherworldly ambient music inspired by "A Clockwork Orange" is your thing, we'd heartily recommend checking out this expansive EP from sometimes Bokeh Versions artist Mars89, a producer better known for laying down weighty slabs of hybrid bass music. The A-side boasts three fresh slabs of end-of-days electronica: the creeping intensity and blackened debris of "Horrorshow" - all doom-laden modular pulses and horror movie synth motifs - the delay-laden drums and noise style screeching guitars of "Ultraviolence" and the sparse, post-dubstep moodiness of "Strack". Over on side B, Thom Yorke delivers a deliciously ghostly ambient take on "Horrorshow", before Zomby re-imagines "Strack" as an extra-percussive, off-kilter techno roller and Low Jack re-casts the same track as a fuzzy, red-lined fusion of heavy analogue bass, skittish snare rolls and bustling, hard-to-pigeonhole beats.

Cat: NEXUS 212. Rel: 28 Feb 20
  1. Don't Do It Like That
  2. Don't Do It Like That (instrumental)
  3. Nexus
  4. No Statues
Review: During their time as Nexus 21, Altern-8 pair Mark Archer and Chris Peat were given the opportunity to head to Detroit and record with some of their techno heroes, Kevin Saunderson and Derrick May included. "Made In Detroit" presents these rare and significant recordings for the first time, offering a suite of tracks that fix UK-style bleep melodies (all the rage in late 1989/early 1990) to the kind of fizzing rhythms, warm bass and futuristic electronics then popular in the Motor City. There are two versions of house-tempo standout "Don't Do It Like That" (one with a whispered lead vocal by Ann Saunderson), while the clanking and metallic "Nexus" and more ghostly "No Statues" accurately fuse the best bits of both British and American techno at the time.

Go With The Flo EP
  1. You Gotta
  2. Bliss
  3. Techfest
  4. Suits You
Review: For the first release on their freshly minted Euphoric State sub-label, London label OPIA has turned to '90s survivors A2 & Stopouts, a trio of producers who first made their name as British tech-house pioneers in the late 1990s. The four tracks showcased on "Go With The Flo" apparently date from this period, though this is the first time they've seen the light of day. There's much to admire throughout, from the rolling, funk-fuelled house grooves and intergalactic pads of opener "You Gotta", to the jacking tech-funk of closing cut "Suits You", via the glassy-eyed rush of "Techfest", where sci-fi motifs and dream house electronics rise above bumping beats and a deliciously squelchy bassline.

Review: Miles Sagnia has a deep-rooted backstory in the UK underground techno scene. Under his own name and as Miles Atmospheric he's produced consistently compelling techno for labels like Finale Sessions, FireScope, Aesthetic Audio and Applied Rhythmic Technology. Such associations point to the soundworld Sagnia inhabits - a harmonically balanced strain of deep-diving brain food that favours expressive musicality and inventive programming over rigid functionality.

Having previously appeared as Miles Sagnia on Ornate back in 2010, he returns to the label as Miles Atmospheric with three cuts that explore melancholic moods through artful interplay between beautifully rendered synth tones and intricate drum machine excursions. These tracks still move with purpose and presence, but the end goal is more cerebral than physical - a perfect fit for the immersive experiences Ornate has always strived to promote.

Review: Seminal reissue alert! Baby Ford had already been a chart-baiting acid house superstar by the time he launched the PAL SL label in 1996. He'd left behind the major label scene and moved firmly back into the underground with exploratory techno releases on Ifach and collaborations with Mark Broom. This new label marked a shift for Ford though, setting him up for the trips into minimalist club tracks that have been his bread and butter for decades now. From the machine soul trysts of "Slow Hand" to the woozy techno thrust of "Tall For His Height" and the atmospheric house wriggle of "Kez", this release is a classic through and through. Beat the sharks and nab a copy of this long out-of-print gem.

Review: Mike 'Agent X' Clark is a true hero of the Detroit scene, but he rarely gets the props he deserves, making any outing of his a cause for celebration. El Prevost's No Speakers label knows what's up, and they've drafted in Clark for his killer jam "The Heat." The name is no foil, this track will set any party ablaze with its distinctive speech sample and saucy rhythm section. Alongside the original, there is a strong cast of remixers on hand to serve up deadly variations, from the label boss' skipping, psyched-out groover to Ben Sims' appropriately thumping techno workout. Peter Rocket especially impresses with a crafty breaks version that should slot in nicely with the resurgent electro scene.

Review: Vigenere is creating a mysterious vibe with its obscure collaborative releases, but the music speaks for itself as it plots a course through deeper realms of the dance. After contributing to the first release, Malin Genie is back and seemingly flying solo for a more direct trip into dubby techno territory - that's certainly the vibe on opening immersion heater "Eschaton". "Drain" has a more tripped out minimal flavour with the after hours in mind, while "Venus" swaps moody atmospheres out for a hazy shuffler peppered with slices of warm instrumentation. "Elara" brings things full circle with another crooked dub-out to bring eyelids down heavy in a state of transcendental bliss.

Review: The second release from Music Makes Us is produced by a young, up and coming producer from Leeds. Einerlei has an unrivaled ability to create long revolving landscapes of techno, which over the course of the track take you on a journey, adding subtle elements as you listen, but retaining the core rif. This ability to create a whole piece of music out of a simple melody may seem simple in its delivery, but as you listen you notice the varying layers that make up these two driving dub techno tracks.

Review: AE presents two 12"s of rhythmic hypnosis from the eXquisite CORpsE related project, XqST (Robbert Heijnen and Debbie Jones). AE logic symbols that stand for "For All" and "There Exists" is a deep and meditative journey moving further into the more abstract territories that Robbert and Debbie previously explored with eXquisite CORpsE.

Most of the material on the record is selected from improvisations Robbert and Debbie recorded in their home studio in Vancouver, BC during 2003, except for "SDLY" which was recorded in the Netherlands in 1996.

The material came about naturally, mixing previously collected loops and sounds with improvisations and manipulations on further electronic equipment. During the time of these recordings, Robbert and Debbie would put their kids to bed and retreat to their home studio, where making noise together was a way to relax.

These eight tracks are a coherent document of the free-flowing experimentation and musical symbiosis shared between Robbert and Debbie. Created for each other, now to be shared.

Review: Black Cadmium first came to our attention last year thanks to their rather good collaboration with Kevin Ney on Afro Deep ("The Nasty"). Here the Rotterdam duo offers up their first full EP, which also doubles as the debut release on Dutch imprint Vault Wax. There's plenty to tingle the senses from the word go, with opener "Muted Chaos" offering a clandestine mixture of chunky electro beats, buzzing riffs, intergalactic electronic pulses and winding acid lines. The fun doesn't stop there though, with the acid-fired ghetto-house bounce of "Get That Booty" and the deep techno dreaminess of closing cut "Stairway" also hitting impressive heights.

In Nicola's own words: "From the highlands of the Equator, an eclectic sound develops in multiples forms: tension, gravity, drums...un-dusted elements from old records, retranslated to tape in order to revive the emotion. All the tracks in this compilation have been assembled through different experimental methods, as this is something that characterizes our creation around here. The work of FE, Quixosis, NTFL (from the city of Ibarra) and my self represent in this record some of the underground fields that this city offers". Indeed an experimental way to experience this city through the sounds of this 4 amazing producers.

Silverlining Dubs (x) (Silverlining mix)
  1. Arctor & Jay Hill - "Mercurial" (Silverlining remix)
  2. Ravi McArthur - "Here & Now" (Silverlining remix)
  3. Spook In The House - "Conspiracy"
Review: After a busy Summer on the road, South London's Silverlining returns to his home-grown imprint for the tenth release on his cult series. The EP opens with his sublime 2019 remix of Arctor and Jay Hill, previously unrleased on vinyl. On the flip are two reissues: the first of his 1998 remix of Ravi McArthur from Reverberations; and a Detroit-inspired electro track written at the tender age of 19 back in 1995 under his early Spook in the House guise.

  1. Horizon
  2. Shimmer
  3. Untitled
Review: Having ended 2019 with must-check releases on Whities and Modern Hypnosis (the latter in cahoots with long-standing collaborator Mystik), Pugilist comes out swinging on his first outing of 2020, a Nous Klaer label debut that offers up three high grade workouts. While hypnotic opener "Horizon" is a fine chunk of warm, dubby, spaced-out broken techno, it's the sub-heavy intensity of the track that follows, "Shimmer", that hits home harder. Featuring throbbing, mind-altering bass tones, mutant electronics, ghostly tones and a tough, infectious rhythm, it's amongst his boldest and most mind-altering tracks to date. If that's not enough to set your heart racing, closing cut "Untitled" is a metallic, otherworldly techno beast.

  2. No Drama (Mor Elian remix)
  3. Loose Fit
  4. Hand Of Eris
MPX 2 features 3 cuts of blisteringly linear, apocalyptic techno from A Saggitariun, fresh from the release of his recent album on Running Back.
The record also features a remix from Mor Elian (Fever AM, HyperColour) who reimagines "No Drama" as an almost sub-aquatic dub-excursion.

MPX is both a new vinyl only label from Man Power that explores raw forms of Techno, as well as also being an alias for the producers own occasional technoid excursions.
