  1. You're The Only One (feat Bonnie Blanchard & The Mean Machine)

Review: For their latest must-check rare soul reissue, German crate diggers TRAMP Records take us back to 1969 and the sole single from Philadelphia outfit Andy Aaron & the Mean Machine. A-side "You're The Only One" is a superb chunk of bass-heavy soul full of energetic drumming, fuzzy horn motifs, inspired lead vocals by Bonnie Blanchard and sax solos from none other than Grover Washington (then a young musician and member of the Mean Machine). Equally as potent is instrumental flipside "Right On Time", which is a riotous funk workout that boasts more lung-busting solos from an on form Washington.

  1. Jazz Carnival (Space Jazz mix - Global Communication remix) (2:00)
  2. Jazz Carnival (LP mix)
Review: We hear on the grapevine that there could be some seriously desirable Global Communication vinyl reissues on the way in 2020. To tide us over until then, Far Out has decided to reissue one of the legendary West Country duo's most celebrated and sought-after remixes: their 1996 "Space Jazz" remix of Azymuth classic "Jazz Carnival". Pritchard and Middleton's version is a spacey deep house epic of intergalactic proportions, with subtle elements of the Brazilian band's loose and languid '90s re-recording of the track (the B-side "LP Mix") weaving in and out of a warm, rich and hypnotic groove. It's one of the most dancefloor-friendly of all Global Communication remixes - many were straight ambient or downtempo rubs - but also one of Mark Pritchard and Tom Middleton's finest.

Cat: BAC 002. Rel: 01 Nov 19
  1. Rumbero (feat Nidia Gongora)
  2. Corazon (Camilo Tumbao)
Review: Ever since he first made an impact earlier in the decade, Bosq has proved adept at joining the dots between contemporary club culture and the heady heaviness of vintage African and South American dancefloor styles. He's also rather good at crafting authentic Latin dancefloor workouts, too, as this tidy seven-inch single proves. Check first "Rumbero", featuring the confident vocals of Nidia Gongora, a horn-happy affair that effortlessly joins the dots between rhumba, cumbia and psychedelic punk. His electronic influences come to the fore on flipside "Corazon (Camilo Tumbao)", a contemporary take on the Cumbia sound rich in fuzzy analogue bass, jaunty organs, dub-wise noises and Colombian style male vocals.

Review: First released back in 2016, "El Corredor Del Jaguar" remains one of the most potent releases by Combo Chimbita, a New York-based crew of musical fusionists whose roots are defiantly Colombian. Reverb-soaked A-side "Pajaro (Extended Mix)" is particularly potent, with the band brilliantly melding elements of cumbia, funk and psychedelic rock into brilliant new shapes. The four-piece's obsession with jumpy, loose-limbed drumming once again comes to the fore on the sweet and slightly more wild "Frio Severo", while closing cut "Chimbita Theme" is a kaleidoscopic mix of military strength South American percussive, mind-altering bass and trippy wah-wah guitars.

LA DIFERENCIA ANTAL & PALMS TRAX EDITS
  1. Carnaval Soca (Antal edit)
  2. La Musique (Palms Trax edit)
Review: Although not widely known, Daniel Dimbas's 1985 album "La Diferencia" is regarded in some circles as one of the greatest Caribbean zouk records of all time, and certainly the heaviest. Rush Hour co-founder Antal is a fan, and here heads-up a double A-side of fresh edits of key cuts from the sought-after set. First up Antal expertly rearranges "Carnaval Soca", delivering a warm, humid and sweaty interpretation rich in driving soca-disco grooves, punchy horns, heady harmony vocals and mazy, Zouk style analogue synthesizer solos. Palms Trax takes a similarly light-touch approach on his edit of the breezier and more sun-kissed "La Musique", occasionally opting for filter trickery on an otherwise traditional style scalpel edit.

Review: As the title sneakily suggests, the latest volume in DJ Soopasoul's essential "Soopastole Edits" series sees the prolific re-editor and mash-up merchant take his scalpel to Sister Sledge classic "We Are Family". We could be wrong, but it sounds like it was created using the multi-track parts, focusing as it does for much of the duration on a stripped-back, DJ-friendly groove, selected vocal snippets and delay-laden musical elements not always audible on the original version. Over on the flipside "Cosmo On The Groove" version, he takes a slightly different approach, adding a classic old school hip-hop acappella to an expertly cut-up version of the Sister Sledge track that utilizes a little more of the sing-along chorus.

Review: Previously, French producer Gary Gritness has carved a niche as a creator of hard-wired revivalist electro and boogie, delivering slightly more eclectic - but wholeheartedly electronic - albums for Hypercolour and others. His latest project is a little different. It sees him join forces with two musician friends to deliver an album of radical new (mostly electronic) interpretations of Don Cherry's jazz-fusion works. All seven tracks were recorded live in the studio using a mixture of dusty drum machines, synthesizers, percussion, acoustic instrumentation (Spanish guitar, saxophone) and the musicians' own voices. The results are superb, delivering intergalactic and often wonderfully out-there covers of Cherry compositions that sound like they were beamed down from some far-off tech-jazz galaxy.

Music (12")
Cat: KALITA 12012. Rel: 08 Nov 19
  1. Music
  2. Forever Us
Review: Kalita are happy to announce the first ever 12" reissue of Henry Turner Jr.'s hugely sought-after 1980 disco single, 'Music', backed by the first ever re-release of his 1984 boogie single 'Forever Us'. So elusive and in-demand, the former routinely commands four-figure sums on the rare occasion that a copy surfaces for collectors and DJs to scramble over. The latter is equally as great, commanding three-figure sums and demonstrating clearly America's development by the mid-1980s away from disco and towards the boogie craze. In addition, here Kalita accompany the release with a never-before-seen press photo of Henry's band Crystal and interview-based liner notes.

Based in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the Crystal band consisted of Henry on guitar with local musicians Ranches Hall on keyboards and vocals and Ricky Broomfield on drums. By the tail end of the 1970s, Crystal had settled themselves into the local music scene, and performed at many nearby venues including The Golden Palace, Derringers', The J Club, and for numerous fraternities and sororities of nearby universities.

By 1980, the band were ready to record their first single, 'Music', in the hope that it would be a radio hit. As Henry explains, "we were driven performers and 'Music' was the perfect tool to get us radio play". They decided to pay to lay down and press their music at Soundsmith Recording Studio, which had the ability to not only record but to also manufacture and release their music on the studio's own eponymously- named label. Only five hundred copies of the record were pressed, distributed by the band themselves, meaning that today, copies almost never turn up for sale. A fantastic disco track, upon release the band deservedly succeeded in their original aim, and it was a radio hit in Baton Rouge.

Within four years of 'Music's' release, Ranches Hall had left the band, reducing it to two core members - Henry and Ricky. However, still eager for success, the now-slimmed down Crystal band recorded 'Forever Us' over a couple of days as a follow-up single to 'Music', laying down their instruments at the local Sound Trax Studio, produced by Henry himself. In contrast to the number of additional session musicians that had performed on their first record, here only Henry and Ricky contributed, playing all the instruments and providing the vocals themselves. On release, the record received notable success, not only in the US but also across the pond on the UK scene.

Since then, Henry has continued to release both his and other musicians' music on his own Hit City label, as well as developing his musical style and cementing himself in at the core of the Baton Rouge music scene.

We hope that this timely re-release helps to make such great pieces of music accessible and affordable to all once more.

Good Hope
Review: It would be fair to say that Dave Holland, Zakir Hussain and Chris Potter are not your average jazz trio. For starters, we can't think of many other trios comprised of a double bassist, a tabla player and a saxophonist. It's a musical line-up that guarantees intriguing, intoxicating and exotic music, as "Good Hope" emphatically proves. There's something genuinely alluring about the trio's combination of intricate table rhythms, inventive and off-kilter double bass lines, and sax solos that wind their way around both like a fell runner zig-zagging his or her way up a windswept mountainside. It's jazz, Jim, but not as we know it.

  3. Cosmic Girl (Dimitri From Paris remix - instrumental)
Review: In the summer of 1996 you couldn't escape Jamiroquai's "Cosmic Girl", a sing-along fusion of disco and jazz-funk that became massive in clubs thanks to a slick David Morales remix. Here it gets some hush-hush new remixes courtesy of re-edit maestro and disco king Dimitri From Paris. The French veteran's A-side remix takes the track further towards classic disco territory, placing swirling electronic effects around the band's familiar vocals and instrumentation. Arguably even better though is the flipside "Dubwize" version, which cleverly re-imagines the cut as a mid-80s style NYC proto-house dub. A string-laden instrumental version of the A-side remix completes a rather tidy package.

Review: The best editions of the long running "Back To Mine" series tend to be those where the chosen selector offers up a varied but loosely linked mix of surprising and lesser-known tunes. On their edition, Mercury Prize nominated duo Jungle has done just that. Beginning with the bluesy late night lament of Barbara Moore's "Steam Heart", the pair takes us on a warming and eye-opening journey through Afrobeat (Inflo), glassy-eyed wind-down deep house (Manuel Darquart, Admin's brilliant "Space Cadet"), skewed pop (Mocky), string-laden jazz-funk (Kamaal Williams), Serge Gainsbourg-esque chanson (Sam Evian), drowsy Balearica (Mansur Brown), and loved-up 1960s style dream pop (The Flying Stars Of Brooklyn NY, HNNY).

  4. I Wanna Be EVERYTHING (LUXXURY remix)
Review: Los Angeles disco producer LUXXURY's Be Good 2 Me 12" kicks off with the title track, a muscular, bass guitar-powered song (as heard in Forza Horizon 4 for XBOX). Evoking that 1979 moment where rock bands like Kiss and The Rolling Stones made their token 'disco song,' the tune was inspired by the melodic punk basslines of The Clash's 'The Magnificent Seven' and Hot Chocolate's 'Every 1's A Winner. "I Need You" (8.5, DJ Magazine) is an honest-to-god love song featuring funked-up bass from Fitz' and the Tantrums' Joe Karnes, while "Feel the Night" (as featured on Hedkandi Beach House, Toolroom's Poolside Ibiza and more) is a rubbery dancefloor destroyer just begging for falsetto sing-along. 'I wanna be EVERYTHING' is an unabashed love letter to 70s dancefloor culture audaciously recalling the sexual hysteria of peak time Studio 54: Loleatta Holloway, Chaka Khan and all four Gibb brothers rolled into one.

Review: Far Out has decided to pay tribute to one of Brazilian music's most overlooked - and, let's face it, obscure - talents, Ana Mazzotti. She recorded just two albums in the 1970s before passing away from cancer in her early 30s a few years later. Both of those album have become sought-after, particularly 1974 debut "Ninguem Vai Me Segurar". This first ever reissue proves why. Warm, breezy and effortlessly soulful, it sees Mazzotti and her backing band sashay between languid samba-jazz, intergalactic bossa, soft-focus Brazilian soul and the kind of attractive jazz-funk/fusion that would later become the hallmark of Azymuth (not much of a surprise since two of that band's founder members were part of Mazzotti's backing band).

Review: For Brazilian music collectors, the two 1970s albums by sadly departed vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Ana Mazzotti have long been must-have sets. Listening to Far Out's new reissue of the second of those, 1977's self-titled "Ana Mazzotti", it's easy to see why. The album is warm, woozy and groovy, joining the dots between slick and summery samba-jazz, synthesizer-laden bossa-nova, Azymuth style jazz-funk/fusion (see the delicious and laidback "Sou") and the kind of atmospheric, otherworldly deepness rarely heard in Brazilian popular music during that period. Highlights are plentiful throughout, with "Cordao", the spacey and up-tempo "Eta Samba Bom" and languid "Bairro Negro" among the many standout tracks.

Review: Faze Action Records presents the official reissue of three of Micky Milans classic tracks from the early 80's, including the stunning "Quando Tu Danses", orginally recorded in 1980. This hybridAof Disco and Brazilian music, with percussion and infectious piano hooks, has been given a re edit by Pacha resident Willie Graff and is already receiving big support from DJ Harvey at his Pikes residency in Ibiza. This track is now officially available for the first time on one side of a 12".
Micky Milan came to prominence in the early to mid 70s as one of France's first DJ's to support the Funk and Disco sounds from the US. Packing out clubs in Paris and delivering marathon sets til 6 in the morning, Milan quickly earned a reputation as a top DJ in the Paris nightlife scene with touring artists such as Prince, Madonna, Delegation all dropping in to catch him spin.

Review: Vinyl copies of Japanese jazz drummer Takeo Moriyama's modal masterpiece Smile have long been in-demand amongst collectors. This can partly be attributed to its obvious quality, but also to the fact that few copies ever made it out of Japan. This reissue of the 1981 release, then, is more than welcome. Moriyama and his accompanying musicians recorded the four-track set in November 1980, serving up instrumental workouts that got a good balance between advancement of killer grooves and the showcasing of some remarkable instrumental solos. The most remarkable thing, of course, is Moriyama's drumming. In fact, you'll find few finer jazz drum solos than those on the album's standout moment, epic opener "Exchange" (though Moriyama's work on the title track is almost as good).

Review: For the second Riddims EP, collating the music of The New Morning, the label highlights further how a group based around the southern Germany Afro-Cosmic scene created a melange of music, a sound, that stepped wide of the house and techno movement then sweeping Europe.

In Global Rhythm Records, friends and producers, DJ Otti and Jay Pee, alongside DJ Thilo and DJ Fred, represented Munich "Westside", running parties and across just 11 self distributed releases, carved their own eclectic niche that were being played by the likes of scene DJs Stefan Egger and Enne.

Slowed afro-percussion, Brazilian flavours, elements of ethno folk, flighty wood instruments, trance overtures, shamanic voices and more are pieced together via heavy sample use in an early hip hop mastermix style.

Again with no track lasting much over 4 minutes, these musical vignettes are perfect tools for the eclectic DJ. Covering uplifting - almost Balearic grooves - to deeper mind-inducing spellbinds and to darker corners of trippy psychedelic invocation, this is The New Morning experience.

Review: The final 6 track reissue EP of Munich's mid-90s Afro-Cosmic project, The New Morning, completes the archival while expanding their sound of heavy African / Brazilian influenced sampling and percussion to include Balearic, House and Trance.

Again a trip to the Cosmic wonderlands of Global Rhythm Records, Riddims 3 brings this collection of DJ Otti and Jay Pee's, plus support from DJ Thilo and DJ Fred, vision to a close.

More eclectic than cohorts like Tribal Italia out of Cesana or Stefan Eggers' Sound Station Records, The New Morning enwraps world beat music for the eclectic, post-hippie generation. Monotonous beats, deep bass, memorable melodies, sampled in a tribal mystic.

Included here, the previously unreleased Kongo Bina points to a fuller sound, where heavy samples are overridden by analogue machines. As found across the 3 EPs, the collage of sounds, laced with live percussion, make the party.

From the weekly gatherings across north Italy into Austrian and on to Munich, some twenties years pass but the journey from the original Cosmic club to now fits. Time for an "Afro Funky" discovery.

A-side "This Is My Year" is the one for dancefloor plays, offering as it does a celebratory vocal over what would then have been called a "modern soul" backing track (disco, basically, though the term was used in Northern Soul circles as a catch-all for anything that wasn't old and stomping). Side B's "Keep This In Mind" is a superb slow number smothered in strings and glassy-eyed orchestration that's probably always on rotation at the mythical "Heartbreak Hotel".

Review: Second time around for Arthur Verocai's 2016 album "No Voo Do Urubu", a set that remains the veteran Brazil artist's most recent full-length excursion. It remains a superb set full of hazy, sun-kissed future classics that put a decidedly loose and languid spin on the 1970s MPB sound that he did so much to popularize. That means ear catching blends of samba, easy listening, folk, jazz-funk and smooth AOR. Highlights are plentiful throughout, from the gentle breeze of "O Tempo E O Vento" and the flute-laden, Azymuth-influenced shuffle of "No Voo Do Urubu", to the big band samba sizzle of "Mina Terra Tem Palmeiras", where Lu Oliveira adeptly delivers a memorable lead vocal.

Review: Isle Of Jura's latest on-point release is a new edition of Zann's sought-after 1990 set "Strange Ways/Inside Jungle", a self-released album of experimental, left-of-centre musical fusions produced in the band's basement studio in Dortmund. The record's genius lies in the band's mixture of Eno/Byrne style ambient motifs, delay-laden electronic beats, densely layered African and South American percussion sounds and chiming instruments from South East Asia. There are some suitably trippy tricks employed here and there - backwards vocals, layered field recordings and so on - but also snaking sax lines and cheery synthesizer melodies. In other words, it's an inspired, hard-to-pigeonhole album that just gets better with each successive listen.
