Review: Aethers Spring is a new project based out of Copenhagen. The music of Aethers Spring will manifest through three distinct personas, each with their own distinguishing sounds, styles and narratives. In this sense Aethers Spring is a Gesamtkunstwerk making use of multiple art forms to augment and enhance its musical output via visual and written work.

Aether's Spring begins with ""WATER: Dancing Moon"". A hypnotic and oneiric EP of electronica, it sits strikingly between heady nighttime listening and the converse territories of functional dance-floor music. Some kind of dream. Some kind of dance. Its story is told via the artwork of Frederick E. Woodward and Denis Chapon.

Review: In the early 2000s Derek Carr's notoriety for producing high fidelity techno was understated and unbefitting to the quality of his musical output. In 2016 For Those That Knoe initiated an acclaimed series of EPs which showcased unheard material alongside some long lost vinyl only classics from Derek's archive. Cut to now and the imprint has put together something truly special: a raid on dusty record shelves have been traded for one into the binary world, For Those That Knoe has selected 17 recordings only previously available on the digital format or previously unreleased, now remastered and pressed onto physical form.

Review: If you can't get no "Sweatisfaction", Edward Upton is here to help. The electro stalwart's latest four-track missive is naturally jam packed with heavy dancefloor workouts, with the title track delivering a near perfect fusion of heavy, two-step influenced electro beats, robotic vocal samples and body-popping synth-bass. Once you've toweled yourself down and are ready to go again, turn your attention to the shoulder-swinging alien electrofunk of "Neutral Net Funk", the Soulsonic Force-meets-Drexciya flex of "Urgent Enquiry" and the ambidextrous, outer space madness of "Hardware Storm", where fuzzy analogue riffs, slap bass and jaunty lead lines cluster around another rubbery electro groove. After that, a cold shower might be in order.

Kilohertz EP
  1. Kilohertz
  2. Magnetic Field
  3. Remote Control Hornet
  4. Algorithm
  5. Digital Warlock
Review: Following their recent reissue of the Elecktroids' sought after 1995 debut album, Clone offers up a tasty new edition of the shadowy, Drexciya-related outfit's only EP, "Kilohertz". Interestingly, the Clone crew has somehow managed to locate an additional fifth track - the mind-altering vocal electro sleaze of "Digital Warlock" - that was missing from the original Warp Records pressing. It's a neat bonus on top of the other four tracks, and they are all seriously scintillating. Highlights include the "Computer World"-era Kraftwerk style alien bounce of "Remote Control Hornet", the glassy-eyed, synthesizer-fuelled positivity of "Magnetic Field" and the weighty beat-box electrofunk buzz of "Kilohertz".

  4. Love Hate
Review: Exzakt's first EP on Monotone since 2007 is a collection of various tracks that have not been on vinyl. This tracks were hand selected by fans out of 17 tunes to chose from. First we have Madrid Nights which has been only heard in Exzakt DJ sets and was a fan favorite that has often been requested for release but has not until now. This song is a deep look into Exzakt's progression in his sound. This track explores many emotions through ever changing soundscapes. A2 is an excellent remix of Larry McCormick's Escape track which originally released on Datapunk in 2004. 214 completely dismantles the parts to make a unique composition that turns into a journey and its perfectly fit for a proper vinyl release. The B starts with an Exzakt Classic that from the start screams to be heard on wax. Me & My 808 is a heavy, ripping tune that will service any dance floor. Last is an emotional piece that you can tell from the title, Love Hate. Again Exzakt goes deep on this one but still keeps the beat pumping like his tracks often do. This is another solid Exzakt Record that should be in any Electro Collectors record box.

  4. Flaw
Review: Carl Finlow is well known as one of the true pioneers of second wave electro producing work for Warp, Klang and NovaMute along the way. What's even more remarkable is the huge impact he's had since returning with new music last year with a flurry of releases for Cultivated Electronics, Central Processing Unit, Lone Romantic and Craigie Knowes. It all started with his early productions on 20/20 Vision and it's a testament to true talent that Finlow enters 2019 with such explosive, forward thinking music. The title track 'Electronic' delivers trademark Finlow vocoder work over hard hitting electro beats and immaculate synths. 'Side Effects' is a no holes barred journey into the dark side of EBM while 'Vortices' creates a trip for the dance floor. The EP is finished with 'Flaw' complete with beats that would make the late great Prince proud while firmly rooted with layers of electronic trickery.

  1. The Hacker - "Rythmus Machine"
  2. Larry McCormick - "Root Code"
  3. Cosmic Force - "Maximilian Of Roma"
  4. DeFeKT - "I Am Here"
Review: Hot off the heels of MonoTrax Volume 1, Monotone is not letting up with this vinyl only compilation of what could be considered some of the best Electro has to offer. To prove that things get started by legend The Hacker with this pure Electro outing. This one is a littler slower but still a powerful number that will put you into the groove. The second cut on this plater comes from the Monotone boss himself with Root Code. This is actually one of the hot tracks from his Intelectro album however this has not seen wax until now. This jam picks things up with his patented solid drum patterns while the rhythms build up until the middle breaks off into epic keys that lift the track even higher until the end drop into the bass. Side B starts off with the Dutch hero Cosmic Force. Maximilian of Roma is a hybrid of grooves and textures throughout. The energy on this carries the track throughout. Just the unique composition you expect from the Utrecht ninja! Last but far from least. The Irish man comes with a nice riding flow as DeFeKT shows why he is one of the hottest Electro/Techno artists at the moment. I Am Here is proclaimed as this riding tune is relentless and shows why this record is a diverse group of artists yet the spirit of MonoTrax is even clearer. To bring together top notch Electro producers for an exciting compilation series.

  4. Tight As A Drum (Bullion Redux)
Review: Emotional Rescue announces the second EP of music from one of the label's favourites as part of a non-defined series where two of their (un)classic songs are remastered, reappraised and reinterpreted with new versions by a contemporary artist for reinterpretation today.

Thomas Leer is a respected and revered musician in both experimental and electronic circles. Having moved from Scotland to London in the late 70s, he moved away from playing in punk based bands, to debut his self-financed 'Private Planes' 7" in 1978, before releasing the cult-album 'The Bridge', with Robert Rental, the following year.

Signing to Cherry Red, he released the heralded '4 Movements' in 1981 and followed with 'All About You' in 1982, and it is from these 2 EPs that this release is sourced. The release starts with Saving Grace from the latter, a long famous "Cosmic classic"; it's mid-tempo, spacey, lifting repetition is the perfect soundtrack for those Baldelli trips straight to the stars.

This is backed with Tight As A Drum, a quintessential Leer production, where Teutonic drums is overlaid with sequencers and synth tones to elevate the song to some kind of disorientating outer-dimensional dub, while his lucid, spoken word vocals instill degradation and reinvention.

Asking Bullion to offer his own take on these two songs was the perfect pairing. A revered artist in his own time, the warmth and depth of his versions takes the originals to his own inner world; sampling, rewiring, reprogramming, resigning and replaying. An EP for the floor, the head and the heart.
