Review: Tresor joins forces with Carhartt - a company that can trace its roots back to the Motor City - to celebrate techno's two premier cities, Detroit and Berlin. The formula is devilishly simple: brand new cuts from artists based in one of the two cities, with stone-cold legends being joined by rising stars. There are headline-grabbing contributions from Juan Atkins as Model 500 (the warped, alien, dub-flecked and Cybotron-esque electrofunk of 'I.D.L.E') and DJ Stingray 313 (the industrial electro clank of 'Dynamic Instability'), plus fine contributions from JakoJako (the early morning techno hypnotism of 'Metal Goat'), AMX (the wonderfully hazy, deep and dubbed-out electro shuffle of 'Your Body') and Erik Jabari (the mind-mangling modular madness of 'Screamore').

Review: Veteran electrohead and former artist on the Rephlex Records roseter DMX Krew's Ed DMX takes the well-known story by Jorge Luis Borges of The Library of Babel, said to contain all the different languages of the earth. Some deep philosophical thought has gone into the album's concept, but we'll leave that to Ed to explain. Instead, we'll tell you that from beginning to end there's plenty of the kind of trademark 80s synth playfulness in evidence, with a generally more mellow and soundtrack-related rather than frenetic and dancefloor-filling vibe in evidence, even on faster tracks like 'The Combed Thunderclap'. Still, Ed knows what he's doing when it comes to this kind of leftfield electro gear, and it's a rewarding, never boring listen.

Review: Fresh off his amazing remixes of classic Juan Atkins material, Santiago Salazar is quickly becoming one of thee names in techno on the west coast of America. His latest 12" 'Dynamic Allocation EP', has found its way to have a home on the top-notch Detroit label, Limited Network. The unique title track perfectly blurs the lines between techno and electro brilliantly while 'Cache Memory' succeeds in a classy retro way. For the second side, 'Accumulator' kicks things up a notch with some hi-tech electro business for the dancefloor. Things close out in great fashion on 'Data Hierarchy' which is one of our favorites on this release. Looking for a different take on Detroit styled techno? You found it here in spades.

Review: Bristol's cultured Innate label is back with a first outing of the year and it returns to their various artists format with a mix of talents all making their mark. UK veteran Tom Churchill opens up with 'Unknown Unknowns (Edit)', which brings plenty of fuzzy and lo-fi aesthetic to jacked up drums and spaced-out pads. Rai Scott then shows her class with 'Suasion' that sinks down deep into immersive drums and is subtly lit up with simmering strings. Innate co-founders Owain K and Gilbert then hook-up under their brand new alias Curved Space and showcase their love of electro with 'Reverie,' a dreamy cut that glows with nice celestial melodies and will have dance floors in a zoned-out state. Last of all it's Lisbon mainstay Jorge Caiado who debuts with the chord-laced 'Floating Without Lifting,' a sophisticated and serene jazz-techno cut that takes you to the stars.

Review: Distant Worlds welcomes back Sound Synthesis for a second outing of warm, melodic electro. The longstanding producer commands stark attention with his unique blend of snappy drums, unaffected synth sequencings and ample headroom ekes, all of which combine to reveal an increasing, slow-burning sophistications as the tracks develop. 'Unification Of Harmony' refuses to prepare us for its sci-fi bass-contrapuntal gut-punch of emotion occurring after its breakdown, while 'Dear Ballacid' gets generative with things, utilising wompy Reeses and rattling, randomised topper elements.

Review: Fresh French label Attention Spin! flaunts the talents of the Parisian underground in its freshest incarnation. Currently turning their focus towards cosmic house music with hints of Italo and new beat, as well as aiming to prioritize dance music that uses vocals as an instrument, their first release here is a four-track EP from rising star DJ Dawidu. The likes of 'Une Nuit A Paris' and 'Mad Game' detail the wilder, undergrounder ends of after-hours nightlife in the Capitale de la Mode. 'Half On A Room', meanwhile, spans dub- and hip-house, while 'Lil'Drama' is the most vocal and catwalk-worthy of the bunch.

Review: Simple Symmetry are back on Calypso for a second offering but this time around it's in a different format. They've enlisted remixes of tracks from their Sorry We Did Something Wrong album which first landed back in 2021 as a self-released project, which won over many fans with a sound that went way beyond the club and now gets repurposed for the dancefloor with extended and club versions. The Horsemen Of Housing & Commercial Services rework of 'Che Che' is a dark disco classic, Smaghhe & Cross rework 'Rounded With A Sleep' into something taught and trippy and INigo Vontier layers in plenty of darkness, grit and grime to his take on 'I Must Not Fear'.

There's a bubbling, braindance-esque flavour to 'Void Walk' with its interwoven synth lines tickling your grey matter in all the right ways. 'User Six' maintains the vibe while nudging a little more towards that spooky vibe you'll hear on labels like Eya, while 'Rainy Move' switches things up on the B-side with plenty of boxy swing and some cheeky organ flex which comes on like a vintage Wagon Repair release.

Review: Frankfurt-Am-Main artist Not Even Noticed keeps the legacy of their city alive in the throbbing, trancey acid tones which come coursing through 'Acid Illusion' - the title track from their new EP. If that track sounds like a Harthouse classic given a shot of electro in the drum lines, 'Rodinia' comes on with melancholy trance leads that could easily have emerged on Eye Q back in the day. For all the past references, there's plenty of freshness in the production to make this record stand up and stand out, not least when we diverge to the reflective electro-acid of 'Xenograft'.

Review: What is retrofuturism, and why is it so important to electro artists? Perhaps it has something to do with the imposition of the past onto the future and vice versa, with the aim of producing an implicit social commentary: either suggesting that certain given visions of the future are retrograde, or that our view of the past is shaped by what we imagine the future will be like. Whatever the case, producer Zobol aims to demonstrate, not tell, their answer to the question, with four neat new electro ones. All coming in the form of functional, floor-ready cascady flappers and snappers, Zobol's choice of titles for the remainders - 'Hyperfocus', 'Inter-City Travel', 'Fight Or Flight' and 'Dread' - seem to get at both the technological joys and biopsychic anxieties of the oncoming future, and/or over-fixating on it for want of the present. 'Fight Or Flight' is particularly impressive with its fabric-tearing transitional sounds and candid, apocalyptically sweeping Reeses, which do indeed activate the parasympathetic nervous system.

Review: UK electro powerhouse and general all round mainstay of the underground Radioactive Man is back with more of his singular sonic goodness, this time with Ben Pest on the Asking For Trouble label. The brilliantly entitled I Don't Want This Sort Of Thing In My House EP starts with 'A Gentleman From London Was Very Upset' and a filtered vocal sample then kicks into life with precision electro breaks and flashy acid lines. 'Rock Farm Rave' is another caustic and rave radar mix of squealing synth lines and jacked up beats, 'Our Survey Says' is hyperspeed rhythmic experimentation and 'Hello Wee'n' shuts down with spun-out cosmic grooves and bumping bass.

Review: Rupert Hartick made quite an impression with his debut release on Pleasure Zone in 2022, and the eagle-eared out there might have copped his drop on Konfus last year. Now he's graduated to the unstoppable Rawax with a four-tracker of sophisticated tech house for the discerning dancer. 'Sweet Dreams' has a meandering, hallucinatory quality helped no end by the amorphous synth tones shimmering over the top of the slinky, shuffling beat. 'Wiggle System' is an entirely different proposition marked out by snaking electro with a mellow demeanour. 'Smokin Kims' is also electro in its construction, but there's a very different flavour to the synths, which warp and writhe through some exquisite sound design. 'Leftback' maintains the thoughtful, original approach Hartick takes across the release, all while offering a different slant to his productions focused more on brittle percussion and FX tweaking.

Each track here explores strong visions of classic sounding bands - 'Plama 1' is pure electro post-punk that infuses a bit of EBM and techno while 'Plama 2' has echoes of New Order's Confusion. We especially like 'Plama 3' with the slower electro funk that sounds like a mix of Severed Heads, Chris & Cosey and Throbbing Gristle and 'Plama 4' sounds like some kind of YMO outtake. If these are any sign of what's to come, than Shades Of Blur will be a label to look out for.

Review: Producer Light Blue File shares their debut release 'Have I Lost My Face?' on Nila's Quest, laying down a unique gothic cyberpunk vision through the faithful funnel of electroclash. The titular question is a valid question to ask, not least since we really do know what he's getting at, at least when it comes to mid-dancefloor losses of facial feeling, either drug- or music-induced. Haunting, spine-tingling electro flagellations purr, ooze and sputter throughout this EP, and evidence Light Blue File's continued ability to shapeshift around whichever stylistic need befits; 'Louise Ciccone' throws a closing curveball through minimal rims and FMmy knocks.

Review: We all know electro as a genre is themed implicitly around the idea of a robot apocalypse, but what happens when the humans rebel? Human Rebellion's latest 12" 'Alien Radio' goes some way to describing this imagined sonic insurgency, titularly from the POV of an alien onlooker who may or may not be orchestrating the entire thing as a proxy war. Opening with the whammy explosions of 'The 4th Industrial Revolution' and continuing the mad-maxxed charge with 'Human Mistake', it's clear that this is a rebellion in which the humans, too, have mastered the machine. Are we talking OG mortals or cyborgs here? Then comes 'Final Wave' and 'Alien Radio', narrating the head-on charging, terrasonic war tactics of our fleshly friends - their would-be coup de grace - before handing back to our extraterrestrial sponsor for a brief intermission of 4x4 airwaved freq-outs, followed by a final slipperer remix from long-timers The Exaltics.

Intended as a vinyl-only release - with the digitals priced at the exorbitantly high sum of €1,000 as of this time of writing - it's clear that the artist and label intend for these dark Italodance numbers to be heard via the naturally lossy medium that is wax, in all its crispy-crackly murk and dirt. From opener 'Attrazione Invisible', which pines after the eponymous long-lost celestial object that has puzzled astronomers and cosmologists since long last, to the closing 'Dialogo Perpetuo', which bedazzles with its harmonic arps, burgeoning melodies and wind-down synth fallers, you're in for a real treat here.

It's been a long time since the project was put on ice, but a quick archival dig yielded some unreleased gems which now find a home on TR One's always-on-point Intrinsic Rhythm. Generationally, this is two different waves of Ireland's healthy electro scene working in tandem, charged by some absolutely deadly machine funk executed around the 1999-2004 era but sounding like all your future shock dystopian dreams made real.

Review: Italian producer Heinrich Dressel kicks off 2024 with a strong start, following up two initiatory releases on Italian label Bordelo A Parigi and Distrikt with a hat-trick for Serenity In Keos. Moving in a more muted, dark electro direction compared to the first EPs, Dressel's modus operandi aims at something in between a Drexciyan sonic ink emission and a former seafaring organism's slow territorialization; 'Land Under Siege' in particular sounds like a kind of warring Atlantean revenge, with its doomy watery harmonies descending on sonic landed terrains, conjuring images of a preliminary war-cry hollered before a full-throttle acid barrage.

Review: Aline Umber burst onto the scene in 2022 with a feelgood brand of deep house which takes its cues from all the best bits of the 90s, and their form remains strong on this latest drop. 'Down To Earth' has a hip-house flavour which will have you rapping along in no time at all, while 'Tell A Vision' leans on sentimental keys for a seriously emotive dose pitched at peak time. Maxime DB guests on the punch, acid-tinged 'Emergency', while Joachim Baumerder lends a hand on the instructive 'Doin' Acid'. If you need some upfront flavours to get the party juiced up good and proper, this is a must-check.

Review: In the Strugatsky brothers' Roadside Picnic - and its ensuing film adaptation by Andrei Tarkovsky, Stalker - "the Zone" is a forbidden area lying somewhere in a post-apocalyptic, post-Soviet wilderness, in which manifold unspeakable evils and anomalies lurk, in wait of those bold enough to brave them by riskily attempting to reach the wish-granting, power-bestowing oracle at its heart. Producer CT Kidobo channels the noxiously wish-fulfilling, but also toxic gases and atmospheres native to the Strugatskys' Zone, via four waste-scouring 4x4 electro heaters, described by the Neuma label as channelling 'highly emotional content'. A chillingly formative journey is conveyed through the opening 'The Last Run', the sticky, hands-dirty drama of 'Into The Zone' and the half-lived bonus beats of 'Just Use Your Imagination'.

Review: Straight from the icy heart of Poland comes Viikatory with her latest EP 'Atom Heart'. Seven electro facehuggers straddle the adjacent ends of acid and bleep techno, as an overarching mood of of sludginess is felt. Increasingly experimental and courageous as it continues onwards, the likes of 'Spaceship' and 'Freaky' are the mustiest of the bunch, building on the young hard electro star's already many witnessings of the pan-European DJ circuit.

Review: Highly curious, difficult-to-pin-down techno/Italo-ish stuff from Prince Of Takicardia and Rifeno, who here jointly assist Backward Futura in its mission to explore the sounds of 1980s and 1990s through the lens of the new Millennium. We find this aim to be something of red herring, since these tracks sound almost entirely new in their composition, and not necessarily of those times, not least since they were made in the 2020s; while taking obvious cues from those eras, the likes of 'Arte Del Sexo' and 'La Casa Del Ritmo' flesh enough out of their respective influences to sound untied from them. Through cinematic breaks and tropical bleep, Rifeno and the Prince portray their wild but no less at easse imaginations, bringing the sunned and stressless feel of the Balearic Isles to the darker worlds of EBM and industrial, making for a complex sonic flavour.

Review: Candido aka. Luis Schiebeler lays down eight darkwave / Italo numbers for Spain's Oraculo Records as part of their extended EPs series - Megabreakz. The seventh addition to the sonic saga is a hearty, circuit-bent dancefloor haunter, marking the 'inaugural chapter of a two-part epic' by Candido, which promises a journey spanning everything from EBM to new beat to rave breaks. Wherever you place 'Mechanical Dances Part 1' on this vast stylistic continuum, the fact remains that Candido's approach to the post-industrial dance form is as psyche-imprinting as it is floor-denting, often nodding to the profound (sometimes dissociative) experiences common to frequenting such a scene. Peppered throughout - if you know where to find them - are repetitive lyrical mantras, alluding to everything from OOB experiences to controversial French psychoanalysts.

Review: Coqueto Records introduce the third edition of its Various Artists techno series with a robotic one, shepherding the talents of Brian Topham, Acid Charlie, Rufo and Rambal Cochet into one effusive, overflowing field of talent. All tracks here channel that sense of primal radical jank for which the Spaniards are known; kicking off with Topham's 'Dissolved In Ether', a set-starter of EBM-alyptic proportions (giant gated snare, tick; low metallic stereo skreaks, tick; monotone decepticon vocoder grumbles, tick), the palette is well maintained thereafter; Charlie's 'Everything Counts' dives headfirst into the oubliette with sparse dungeon synth strings and Italo vocal gates; Rufo's 'Palta Market' takes the first trance detour with a surprise swerve into a root-noted reverie; and Rambal Cochet helms up the B-sider's curio duties with the percussive fog-out that is 'Catalyst Powder'.

Review: Flight Mode Records' fifth release offers a riveting exploration of futuristic techno landscapes with four distinct tracks from formidable artists. Innuendo's 'Reise Ins Zentrum Der Zeit' kicks off the first side with pulsating rhythms and a progressive build, evoking a journey through time with its driving energy. Following suit, Five Ten's 'Control' harks back to early 90s techno with a robust beat and bleepy melodies, giving listeners with its nostalgic charm. On Side-2, Mono-Tone presents 'Night Spirits,' an enthralling piece featuring a heavy acid line enveloped in ethereal echoes, accompanied by a subtle electro undertone that adds depth to the track's atmosphere. Closing the release, SPAC's 'My Galaxy Is Not Yours' injects upbeat energy with trance elements, inviting listeners on a cosmic voyage filled with pulsating rhythms and hypnotic melodies. Flight Mode Records' commitment to pushing the boundaries of techno is evident in this diverse selection of tracks, shows the label's dedication to delivering forward-thinking electronic music.

'Escape Velocity' is a punchy number that will enliven any floor with its bold bass notes and prickly acid lines screwing throughout the mix as the snappy drums keep things moving. On the flip, takes a slightly different path with fulsome tech house, dubbed out low ends and nagging leads that rise up through them and towards the cosmos. Very effective stuff.

But the ACEW label boss who bears the name makes a worthy attempt to justify it, laying down four killer downtempo dreams of the tongue-in-cheek, driving kind. 'Hypnotik' was clearly made with the aim to mesmerise in mind: 'Waz Up' and 'Sexy Waz' logically follow each other as snake-charming pendulum-swinging coldwave-chug trances to make up the A-side, while the B's 'Following' and 'Subreal' raise the pace again, deftly working illusory melodies round strangled electro workouts.

The title track is both jitterbugging and propulsive, fitting in reams off bass beneath its earcatching toppy snaps; then things get increasingly weird, with 'My Jordan' working in childish laughs and indecipherable hahas between the woodblocks, and 'Something For' going full-on acid blues remix; all in all, we get the impression of a weirdo's favourite, one that nonetheless knows exactly the kinds of uncanny emotions it hopes to solicit.
