Voice Inside (The Backwoods, Craig Richards remixes)
Cat: NAAR 016. Rel: 02 Sep 19
  1. Voice Inside (French version)
  2. Voice Inside (The Backwoods remix)
  3. Voice Inside (English version)
  4. Voice Inside (Craig Richards Authority Clash remix)
Review:
Things I see. Things I hear. Things I say. Things I wish I'd said. Things I do. Things I'm meant to do. Things I wish I'd done. Things I love. Things that make me love. Things that make me smile. Returning to Not An Animal for the 4th time, Ess O Ess create the 'Voice Inside' on NAAR 16.

Instantly tom rolling into a neo-electro commodity, 'Voice Inside' undulates with lustrous vocals that stand as the tracks core. Pads cling to bleeps and guitar chunks that evaporate with alternating delays. 'Voice Inside (French)' adds a sensual linguistic twist, although the elements remain the same, they feel so different. 'Voice Inside (Dub)' completes the A, stripping tones back and chopping the duration to find yet another gorgeous avenue.

On the flip, Backwoods Remix adds to the original atmosphere with a face scrunching bass-line and pulsating 4/4 kicks that embraces the not so distant future. Last but by no means least, the mighty Craig Richards' signature 808s pound on the remix to close the B. Pulling darker tones to pitch shifted vocals, this minimalist beat composition is perfectly suited for vigorous floors.

  1. Follow Me

  4. Don't You Know
Review: Club of Jacks follow up their bestselling debut vinyl release with another 4 tracker of heavyweight House & Garage cuts. This EP also features keyboard maestro Raphael 'Raffy' Bushman who adds some very special vibes. Opening track 'Follow Me' fuses deep basslines, an echoed sax riff and dubwise vocals with a rolling 4/4 UKG beat and mid-tune dubbed out breakbeat section. 'Bring It Back' is the first of the tunes featuring Raffy and he lays down some sublime jazzy piano over skippy swung beats, rhodes pads and nostalgic female R&B vocal cuts. On the flip side, 'Need Your Loving' features more of Raffy's exceptional keyboard skills in the form of organ stabs, uplifting piano solos and a funky bassline over a feel good groove. Rounding off the EP is 'Don't You Know', a late night deep house bomb, combining a heavy sub, emotive strings, organ stabs and soulful vocal flourishes.

Review: Alex Arnout returns with a second EP for the Jack's House imprint. His first EP for the label (Confirmation Bias) was the first release on the label and hit the top 10 best sellers within days of release. The Sync Jam EP features 3 distinctly different tracks. 'Sync Jam' (the lead track) is a true winner with an incredibly infectious loop that creeps in quite early into the track, then the baseline drops in and you are instantly hooked and most likely want to play on repeat. It is the kind of track you wish you had made yourself as the arrangement is stella in the way it builds and engages you. This is a true favourite. 'Calling U' is a really quirky rolling number with both dark and bright tones mixed together perfectly to create a deep atmosphere using lots of interesting catchy keys and patterns throughout the arrangement. 'Resurgen' is a beautiful piece with a true quality mature Balearic sound to it. Warm pads and gentle but effective percussion roll continuously throughout. It is a smooth track that travels, creating a certain of peace of mind.

Review: All producers on this timeless EP known for their contribution to NuDisco/Deep House Music. 1 Life records has enlisted the services of top talents. U.S deep house veteran Vincent Floyd wrap drifting deep spheres, lilting electronics & warm synth rhodes chords around a chunky groove on his fine beat interpretation for a brighter & breezier deep house vibe on a remix that benefits greatly from a squeezable synth bassline & some undulating TB-303 style acid motifs, while Rico De Almenda deliver a driving chunk of dub-disco/deep house fusion rich in sparkling synthesizer lines, sun-kissed chords & his own rubbery post-punk bass. Studio don Vincent Inc always bring unforgettable impressions & inspiration for mind, body & soul. 4 tracks came together to tell music stories about hypnotic deepest stuff, depression, happiness, loneliness, love, miracles & magical experiences. Review: Especial is delighted to welcome Alphonse back to the label for a third EP to again show his deep knowledge of the past to make a future. After the debut dub-breaks-poem of Same For Me and success of his warrior afro-dance Smokey 12", Alphonse made new friends with acclaimed releases for Klasse Wrecks, Hypercolour and Black Orpheus, before here returning like a chosen one with four sun kissed blessings.

Before the fields of Letchlade, hills of Castlemorton or beaches of Skegness had witnessed Alphonse exploring the sounds of many a free party sunrise, summers were misspent travelling the "disco" buses of Europe, tripping the light fantastic from Spook to Amnesia, Disco Piu to Euritimia.

The music, shared experiences and inclusion all led to an acute understanding apparent in his production skills. Ambient dreamscapes, warm bass lines, 808 breaks, 909 kick, piano, flute and horn melodies atop all lift to the heavens. In Moan Up and White Pepper Alphonse takes, reshapes, rebuilds and rewrites to create anew, expanding minds and hearts like never before.

Long stories, short stores, a nod and wink, at its heart Stolen Sunrise is an EP of wonderful expression, a producer peaking, providing a soundtrack to share for those that look to the future horizons with love.

Review: New label Nuances de Nuit kick off in fine style with a various artists 12" that draws on some emergent names to lay out a vision of cross-style dance music that favours the deeper end of the pool. Things get going with an organ-rich house bumper from DJ Steaw that pumps in all the right places, before Armless Kid switches things up with an untitled slice of dynamic, richly layered electro. T. Jacques thumps out a crafty, swinging cut with techy inclinations and oodles of groove, and E. Review: Robin Ball's Memory Box builds on the success of early releases with a big new outing that features two of his own tracks and one from the legendary Luke Vibert. Memory Box is a party that has hosted Derrick Carer, Trevino and A Guy Called Gerald among others, and is a place to hear proper acid house. Ball himself is a master of the genre and most often released on his own Groovepressure label, having been making music since his teens. Now his latest labour of love is once again reaffirming his status as a vital voice in the UK scene. Luke Vibert has a rich history that makes him a key part of the UK's dance counterculture over the last 30 years. His always animated music is wild and inventive and comes on greats like Mo Wax, Warp and Planet Mu. Here he offers 'X to C', a wild melange of warped synth tones, grizzled basslines & acid flashes. It will twist and turn the dance floor inside out. Robin Ball's excellent 'Gripper' is a corrugated bit of electric house music that never sits still. Pensive pads in the background are offset by a busy lead synth line and old school stabs that make it a perfectly timeless, energetic fusion of moods and grooves. Lastly, Ball serves up 'The Edge,' a brilliantly brash cut with stepping acid sequences, raw drum work and warped bass that distills decades of UK music into one essential track. These are three devastating club cuts that expertly draw on the past, present and future of acid.

  4. Slow Burning (Latrec remix)
Review: Aptly setting the scene with some dance-floor absurdity, Komodo comes Running into The Sun for NAAR 015.

Perfectly obtaining the dance-floor ambiance, 'Running into The Sun' produces the visceral beat that gets the party started, with quintessential house stabs channeling the tracks inner balearic heat. Next on the A, Eric Duncan's remix of 'Running into The Sun' funnels the original's heavier elements and pours them into a rattling house shaker. A

On side B, the steady pace of 'Slow Burning' swiftly evaporates with blissful counter melodies that intertwine with arpeggiated synths, sludgy 303s and propulsive drums that create a hypnotic timbre. 'Between Shadows' explores the balearic-beat once more, with opposing guitar melodies vibrating as the soundtrack to this drive-time burnout. Finally, new kids on the block, Latrec add their intrusive Techno remix of 'Slow Burning' to complete the release.

Making his debut on 'Night Shift Records' he decided to go back to the basics. Sampling and re-arranging Soul and Disco music from the mid to late 70's, Never Dull complements the great vocal choruses of the tracks by adding layers of sounds. Organic drums, disco baselines and electric soulful pianos give this EP a magic touch, making this his Go-To 'Discollection' when it comes to choosing a banger to keep the night going on the dance floo

  4. Jonno & Tommo - "Efficacy" (Havantepe Emax Potentiation)
Review: Receptor Theory is the seventh release on Verdant Recordings and the first of several scheduled for 2019. Once again we find carefully selected compositions assimilated into another elegant EP of guaranteed deepness. The EP sets tracks from Berlin's Sirko Muller (Tokomak / Wandering) with Ornate Music's Jonno & Tommo on each side plus serious remixes from Verdant favourites RV800 and Havantepe (last seen together on the 2017 Aura EP). It is measure of the label's growing rep that these producers sought to be featured by the label away from their established imprints. The original Affinity and Efficacy tracks are assured yet subtle, dub inflected grooves but each are treated quite radically when reinterpreted. The RV800 reshape of Affinity moulds it into peak time tech house territory with a playful 303 bassline. Havantepe changes up Efficacy with devastating effect; the remix is a sinister breakbeat slow burn with a creeping & growling 303 bassline and a very strong conclusion to this intriguing EP. An EP for students of the deep and scientists of the mind.

Review: Faze Action return with Zeke Manyika to present "Kubatana", which aptly means "Together" in Zeke's native Shona. The result being an uplifting slice of original African House for the modern dance floor.
