Review: For longer than many of us have been alive, Dimitri From Paris has been one of the disco scene's top re-editors. As a result, this box set of essential rubs from the legendary French producer is a genuine treat. Lavishly packaged and presented in a printed tote bag, the set whips through classic rearrangements of storming peak-time disco cuts from Odyssey, Dan Hartman, Phyllis Hyman and Keni Burke, before delivering dedicated 12s featuring multiple revisions of cuts by Ashford & Simpson, Jamiroquai and Chaka Khan. As you'd expect, there are many must-check tweaks to be found on the latter plates, including a slow-burn instrumental take on Ashford & Simpson's 'Stay Free', a wonderfully spacey 'Dubwize' rework of Jamiroquai's 'Cosmic Girl' and a sing-along-friendly version of Chaka Khan's stunning 'Clouds'.

Review: Bicep's second album is shaped by the experience of touring their debut long player for something like three years, a period during which they honed and perfected their instinct for tracks that would stand the test of time and repeated listening. What develops is a distinctive style typified by a combination of ethereal sonics and cheeky, memorable instrumental hooks, only set to a variety of beats that reference and indeed fuse the plethora of different dance genres that have sprung up since the acid house revolution if the mid-80s. So we get everything from the electro-tainted 'X' to 'Rever', where an African choir floats over a subtle deep house shuffle and 'Saku', where UKG bass pressure and skippy beats provide a hypnotic background for Clara La San's sweet but ghostly voice.

  2. Let No Man Put Asunder (DJ Koco aka Shimokita dub)
Review: Over the years, First Choice's 1983 disco hit 'Let No Man Asunder' has been remixed and re-edited countless times, yet producers are still able to find new ways to reinterpret it. The latest to pass the test with flying colours is DJ Koco AKA Shimokita, who here serves up two fresh reworks. His A-side edit makes the most of the track's infectious groove, jammed-out electric piano chords and spacey synths, eventually introducing the group's brilliant vocals in order to take it to another level. Arguably even better is the stripped-back flipside dub, which sounds like it was crafted from the master tapes. It naturally plays around with the percussion, bassline and vocals, delivering what could be the heaviest take on the track of all time.

Review: Andres has become one of Detroit house music's most celebrated producers in the last decade, but as any deep house nerd will tell you, he's been serving up superb singles and albums since the late 1990s. Out in the Open, which here gets the reissue treatment for the first times, dates from 2002 and is every bit as good as you'd expect. A-side 'You'll Be The One' is a great example of his trademark dusty, sample-heavy and loop-driven style, with crackling extracts from all manner of soul and jazz-funk cuts being melded into a hazy, quietly soulful deep house treat. The even deeper and dustier, MPC house jam 'Is It Cool' kicks-off side B, before the Detroiter goes all Moodymann on the impeccable, solo-laden 'Take Off'. A genuine must-have!

Review: This limited edition triple vinyl set is as killer as the samurais from which it takes its name. The music is culled from the popular amine series on Cartoon Network that mixes hip hop culture with Japanese samurai culture and more than a little dose of jazzy stylings. There are vocal boom-baps and journeying spy themes, deep late night cuts and harder hitting joints, all performed by Nujabes, Fat Jon, Force Of Nature & Illicit Tsuboi. The downtempo charms of "Just Forget" are awash with oriental keys, while "Ole" is soul licked and "World Without Worlds" is superbly lo-fi.

Review: Having enjoyed a successful 2020, DJ Soopasoul strides into the new year in confident mood via a fresh Soopastole Edits release focused on the work of one of his favourite artists, the Godfather of Soul himself, James Brown. Interestingly, the legendary artist doesn't actually feature all that much on the A-side vocal mix of 'Boston Drop', with Soopasoul limiting his involvement to a few excited yelps, grunts and instructions to the backing band. That's not necessarily a bad thing though, because the musical accompaniment - which can be admired further on the tight, DJ-friendly instrumental take - offers an enticing mixture of hard, sun-bright guitar licks, heavy drum-breaks, handclaps and chunky bass. Like the rest of the series, it sounds like a guaranteed floor-filler.

After many years of being hugely and tastefully eclectic, there seems to have been a real focus on electro this year with the boss himself serving up masterful mixes of such sounds for his on going radio shows. 214 keeps up the good work with a nice deep offering here. 'Alpenglow' is all muted sci-fi synth sand jittery beats to get you going then 'Exposure To Wind' keeps you afloat between distant planets. 'Quick Start' is a turbocharged workout with lovely bubbling bass and 'The Night's Shift' then gets slow, sludgy, and superb.

Review: For the imprint's second release, Private Stock Records welcomes some serious mash-up/bootleg remix royalty: Dusty Donuts regular Jim Sharp. He's in fine form too, breathing new life into a sugary 21st century R&B classic by placing the all-female vocals atop crunchy, B-Boy friendly hip-hop beats, jazzy guitar licks and hazy organ stabs. Similarly lauded Canadian producer Flipout takes over on side B, craftily adding verses from a golden-era hip-hop classic to a backing track seemingly crafted from snippets of a hazy old funk track and some suitably floor-friendly hip-hop beats. Mash-ups they may be, but these are brilliantly crafted and sound like genuine future club-rockers.As played by DJ Koco

Review: This production from boogie-era soul specialist Clark Jay has long been a sought-after item amongst collectors, with original copies of the 1981 Peach Tree Records 12" changing hands for significant sums online. Even if you're unfamiliar with it - and outside of record collecting circles, most people are - we'd recommend checking the sound clips of this first ever seven-inch reissue. 'Can't Stop Dancing' is particularly sweet and summery, with Jonnie 'Vibes' Lambert singing about his love of shaking his stuff atop spacey synthesizer lines and a relaxed, laidback disco-boogie groove. That tidy groove can be enjoyed further on the flipside instrumental mix, which makes excellent use of the original's female backing vocals and the aforementioned synthesizer melodies.

Review: A warm welcome back to cheeky downtempo twosome Bent, who hear offer up their first studio set for 14 years. Up in the Air is full of neat reminders that what made them so popular first time round, namely a seductive, slinky, atmospheric, sample-heavy sound that tended towards the tongue-in-cheek and was more likely to draw influence from dodgy, radio-friendly 1980s soft-rock singles and vintage easy listening than obscure Balearic beats or austere electronica. There are of course a few differences - it's far more polished than their early works, and even more musically detailed - but for the most part this is vintage Bent. Given how miserable the world is right now, it's rather nice to listen to an album that prioritises cheeriness, quirkiness and musical colour above all else.

Review: The first release from the Ethiopian Brothers, 2019's 'Ashadwa', was a brilliant slab of Afro-funk that many erroneously believed to be a long-lost classic. In fact, it was the work of a contemporary producer associated with Jalepeno Records. Regardless, the record sounded authentically old and dusty, as does this equally as inspired sequel. 'Selassie (Part 1)' sets the tone, with the producer and his session musicians serving up a righteous Afro-funk workout rich in Tony Allen influenced drum-breaks, flanged guitars, raw tenor sax lines and killer bass guitar. Even more righteous is the flipside 'Part 2' version that showcases more snaking sax lines and some seriously infectious, chant-like vocals.

Here he returns to action with a similarly excellent two-track seven-inch. A-side 'Huit Octobre 1971' is deliciously laidback, sweet and starry, with Bob James style electric piano motifs and spacey, sustained chords reclining over warm bass and loose-limbed, jazz-funk style drums. He gets more up-tempo on flipside 'Raid', layering more mazy electric piano solos and languid trumpet and sax solos over high-octane, jazz-dance influenced drums.

Review: As the label artwork makes clear, this two-tracker from the previously unheard Alex Santos Orchestra was made in tribute to Creed Taylor's legendary CTI Records imprint, which during the 1970s released some of the finest jazz, jazz-funk and fusion ever made. On side A the studio collective gives their interpretation of Freddie Hubbard's 1970 epic 'Red Clay', with the track's most famous musical elements - jaunty sax riffs and mazy electric piano motifs - rising above a funkier, warmer and tighter interpretation of the track's low-end groove. Turn to the flip for their version of Bob James' favourite 'Nautilus', a harder edge take that combines a faithfully spacey take on the original's electric piano melody with sweatier beats and heavier horns.

Review: Since launching two years ago, Tony Higgins and Mike Peden's J-Jazz series has become an indispensable guide to Japan's modern jazz scene. The third volume continues in a similar vein to its predecessors, gathering together sought-after, overlooked and little-known cuts from across the jazz spectrum (think spiritual, modal, fusion, post-bop and Latin), all of which were recorded by Japanese artists in the 1960s, '70s and '80s. The standard of music is, somewhat predictably, breathtakingly high throughout, with highlights including the weighty post-modal bop of Koshuke Mine's 'Morning Tide', the sun-kissed Brazil-inspired brilliance of Hideo Shiraki's 'Groovy Samba', and a string of funk-fuelled, dancefloor-friendly workouts from Hiroshi Murakami & Dancing Sphynx, Shigeharu Muka and the Ryojiro Furusawa Quartet.

Juan Atkins' remix of 'Someone' by Killer Loop takes up residence on the A-side of this three tracker, all swirling, warm pads and spiralling filters, the percussion almost leaning towards disco with its syncopated handclaps, although the overall effect is as shiny and futuristic as you would expect from this Detroit legend. Flip it over for Terry Brookes' 'Breaking Cycles', a calm spoken word narration providing a meditational mantra to accompany the chugging house foundations, full of gentle tease. Review: Given his reputation as Japan's "king of digging", you'll be unsurprised to learn that DJ Muro's latest scalpel-style Diguma Edits are of thoroughly obscure, hard-to-find disco cuts. For example, an original copy of Best Friend Around's hard to find modern soul-goes-disco number 'It's So Good to Know' - a warming and glassy-eyed cut full of hazy grooves, super-sweet vocals and spacey synth sounds - would cost you hundreds of pounds; Muro's shortened, light-touch edit seems a bargain at a fraction of the cost. Foaster Jackon Group's similarly rare 'Feel the Spirit', a carnival-ready slab of Brazilian influenced jazz-funk/disco-funk fusion, is given the Muro touch on the flip, with equally as exemplary results.

Review: By the sounds of this superb debut single, Australian outfit Regime are going to be a band to watch in 2021. Although their roots are in revivalist funk, 'Never Gonna Stop' sees them turn their hands to warm, loved-up and sun-kissed soul of the kind that was once all the rage in the mid 1970s. The grooves are toasty, the male and female lead vocals effortlessly soulful, and the instrumental touches - think languid jazz guitar solos, sweeping strings and lazy, trumpet-heavy horn arrangements - little less than superb. Flipside 'Deuzy Vibe', a P-funk flavoured, turn-of-the-80s boogie-soul style affair, is almost as good. There aren't that many of these clear-vinyl 45s around, so buy now to avoid disappointment.

From the neon-lit tropical vibe of the title track and 'Opperton Swim', to the micro bounce on the affectionately titled 'Ekkies' to the introspective ambient soundscapes as heard on 'Sleep All Night With Open Eye' or 'Welcome New People'. Features musical contributions by his father David on clarinet.

Review: For the latest instalment in his ongoing Diguma Edits series, Japanese "King of Diggin'" DJ Muro has taken his scalpel to Karisma's 'Got You Dancing', a turn-of-the '80s gem featuring lead vocals from Jocelyn Brown that was first released by Peter Brown's cult disco label Sounds of the Universe. The real bomb on this edition is the full vocal version, where Brown's typically strong and soulful singing rises above slick boogie bass, colourful synth sounds, funk guitar licks and unfussy drums. That said, the dub style instrumental edit is really rather good too, with Muro wisely making more room for echoing vocal snippets, instrumental breakdowns and extended percussion passages.

Review: The latest set of Diguma Edits sees dusty-fingered Japanese digger-turned-re-editor DJ Muro take his scalpel to 'Got to Get Your Love' by Clyde Alexander & Sanction, a suspenseful and action-packed 1980 number from producers Peter Brown and Gary Davis. Muro first cuts down and compresses the ten-minute vocal version, making merry with the track's unusual combination of classic disco grooves, showtunes-style orchestration and eccentric vocals. Over on the flip he does a similar job on the slightly different instrumental take, in turns showcasing the track's crunchy guitars, warming electric pianos, spacey synths and grandiose orchestration.

The pair released two albums - This Is How It Is in 1992 and then in 1994, Beyond Flavor, the latter of which saw Suave Lover was replaced by T-Strong and DJ Chubby Chub. 'Can I Get Open' was their biggest hit in late 1993 and it reached #46 on the Billboard chart. Jay-Z is a notable featuring guest and this is a special white label promo edition produced by Ski. It is said that this is the tune that set Jay Z's career off, so don't miss out on your chance to own it.

Review: Four years ago, Super Disco Edits unearthed a stash of previously unreleased solo recordings by sometime Revelation member (and session vocalist on countless classic disco and boogie hits) Phillip Ballou. Having released just two of those songs - the brilliant 'Ain't Nothing Like The Love' and 'Nothing For Real'- back in 2017, they've finally decided to offer-up two more. A-side 'We'll Be Together' is particularly impressive, with Ballou adding his silky, effortlessly soulful vocals to a sparkling backing track that adds spacey synthesizer sounds and cosy female backing vocals to a Philly Soul inspired groove. Over on the flip, 'I Need You' is a sugary but heartfelt ballad in which Ballou is accompanied by little more than an electric piano and a few sustained synthesizer chords. It's a spine-tingling combination.

Review: Since first emerging earlier in the decade, French threesome Domenique Dumont (Arturs Liepins, Anete Stuce, and an 'enigmatic', yet-to-be-named producer) has delivered two picture-perfect albums of atmospheric, occasionally Balearic, underground synth-pop for the Antinote label. People on Sunday, their first album for two years, started life as a synthesizer-based score for celebrated 1930 German silent movie Menschen am Sonntag, which they performed live at a festival in December 2019. Musically, it's arguably even more atmospheric than the trio's previous work, but is still rooted in their now trademark sound. What we get is a succession of melodious, huggable, sun-kissed and occasionally spacey instrumental tracks that sound like the missing link between Tangerine Dream, Air, 1980s Greek new age composers, Jean-Michel Jarre and little-known electro-jazz pioneers.

Review: While previous instalments of Jazzman's essential Spiritual Jazz series have focused on killer cuts and rare gems from the past (specifically material recorded between the 1950s and '80s), the thirteenth volume shines a light on what's happening right now. This second part (of two) successfully showcases the best of the contemporary scene, showcasing cuts from around the world that neatly encapsulate the breadth and diversity of 21st century spiritual jazz. The plentiful highlights include the exotic, Eastern-tinged spiritualism of Wildflower's 'Flute Song', the futurist jazz-funk deepness of Steve Reid's 'For Coltrane', the layered vocals and acoustic instrumentation of Angel Bat Dawid's 'What Should I Tell My Children Who Are Black' and the sparkling, sun-soaked positivity of 'Nova' by Menagerie.

This time it is on a clear, one sided vinyl from R&S and even decades after the tune was released it still sounds fresh, new, vital. Those crashing hits, the incendiary hi hats, the endlessly warped bassline - it's the sound of a rave, complete with flashing strobes and dripping sweat. Review: After an absolutely unforgettable wax-based debut, See-Saw is back with its second vinyl release, Discipline Of Swing Vol. 2. In at pole position is Hotmood with 'Seductive Look', a funk filled mover with lashings of percussion, sexy vocals and a brass section that'll have you jumping out of your seat. Combined with an uber funky bassline, 'Seductive Look' is bound to seduce the disco lover in you. Up at the A2 slot is 'Time To Move' by C Da. Afro, a filter-sweeping, soul-fuelled number with brass, bass and backing vocals aplenty.
First up on the flip side is 'Space Ranger' by Ziggy Phunk, a combination of scintillating synths, gyrating guitars and bouncing bass that make it feel like a disco in orbit. Indeed, like a satellite, this track will be orbiting your head for days to come. Last up, we have Alexny with 'Umbele'. Succulent sax permeates the track from start to end, interspersed with gnarly, 70s synths and a rhythm that won't give up. The perfect opening or closing track for any discerning Disco DJ.

Review: The term 'yacht rock' is arguably among the most divisive to be coined in music over the last few years. For some, the idea of over-biting to beats while leaning against the sun-kissed bow of a multi-million super-vessel sounds pretty good. Others prefer to write the trend off as nostalgic session music, a kitsch reminder of how unabashed and slick pop once was.
We're in the first camp, not least when it comes to Prep - the London four piece known for applying a particularly sparkling sheen to their music, which is grounded in modern R&B and electronica, but has its heart, or at least feet, very much in the white chinos of days gone by. The track 'On & On' has already caused waves this year (no pun intended) with its laidback Metronomy-esque groove, and if you enjoyed that the rest of what's here will fall into place.

Review: More from dusty-fingered don DJ Muro's Digura edit series. This time round, he's focused on two fabulous but often overlooked disco gems. On the A-side it's all about Brandye's punchy, funk-fuelled, disco era crossover soul cover of Ace's much-loved 1974 sing-along 'How Long' - a sublime interpretation that's easily the best version of the much-covered song we've heard. Basically, it's an energetic, impassioned version of an end-of-night classic; what's not to like? Over on the flip, Muro takes his rusty scalpel to Queen Samantha's largely instrumental, Italo-disco classic 'Take a Chance' - a spacey, synth-powered chunk of peak-time chug that has long been championed by some of the World's most knowledgeable disco DJs.

Review: Six years is ages for a band to go without releasing an album or doing very much. But for AC/DC, whose work rate has always been ridiculously high, it's a very, very long time. Between then and now, the band lost their lead singer, Brian Johnson, to hearing difficulties in the middle of their last tour, and saw drummer Paul Rudd arrested in New Zealand for 'attempting to procure a murder'. Talk about impetus to finally call time.

But then these are the guys responsible for one of history's greatest heavy rock triumphs, 1980s's Back In Black, released just months after formative frontman Bon Scott tragically passed. So it's no surprise Power Up, another post-traumatic release albeit an act of reunification with now (relatively) healthy Johnson and innocent Rudd returning, is among their best in the 40 years since. A comeback record that sounds exactly like AC/DC should - ballsy, bluesy, boozy riffs.

Review: As one or two critics pointed out when the Angelheaded Hipster covers album arrived, Mark Bolan is something of a disputed musical genius who remains misunderstood by both naysayers and allies alike. The latter arguably downplaying the chart-topping pop-glam status he enjoyed during his 1970s T-Rex heyday, shortly before commercial and artistic decline led to mediocrity. Meanwhile, those who write him off as only relevant in that period forget the decade of broad work that preceded it.

What we can all agree on, though, is that he wrote some incredible songs that achieved universal adoration, and Cosmic Dancer ranks in the top flight. Nick Cave's contribution to the aforementioned tribute LP stays true to the source material, all emotionally charged lyrics set in heartbroken balladry. A delicate, piano-led ode to the narrator's lost youth, and a promise that despite the passing of time an energy will always prevail.

Review: Those of a certain vintage may remember Surreal Records, a subsidiary of early UK tech-house imprint Swag Records, run by Mike Parsons and Paul Stubbs. Recently the label sprung back into life in order to reissue some of its most potent and sought-after tracks. This number from the Mingers, AKA Parsons and Timmy Stuart, falls into that category. In its' original form (side A), 'Emancipation' is a fine example of turn-of-the-century tech-house/deep house fusion, where dreamy chords, weightless female vocal snippets, high-frequency acid motifs and meandering synth sounds ride a chunky bassline and techno-tempo, garage-influenced beat. Over on the flip you'll find the pair's 'Button Dub', a more stripped-back and bass-heavy affair that does a brilliant job in showcasing the cut's killer groove.

'Yes I Am', David's first single of 2021, continues where her previous work left off. It sees her delivering a soulful, super-sweet lead vocal atop a wonderfully retro-sounding soul backing track that reminded us of the similarly inclined work of Durand Jones & The Indications and Timmion Records stalwarts Cold Diamond & Mink. The A-side full vocal take is our pick of the pair, though the accompanying instrumental is also predictably good.

The Bristol-based producer is in deliciously jazzy deep house mode, crafting two irrepressibly breezy gems out of elements of classic jazz cuts and his own innate musicality. A-side 'Step Into The Light' is particularly good, with Wickens layering a dusty deep house groove with fluid piano motifs, distant horn samples and warming bass. 'Reflect & Heal' is similarly sunny and spiritual in feel, albeit with denser and more energetic percussion, deeper piano chords and some rather lovely clarinet solo action. Simply sumptuous.
