Review: Hassan Ideddir's 1989 single "Atfalouna" sees an expanded repress courtesy of Dark Entries. Born to Berber parents in Morocco, Ideddir began making music at the age of 10 after being discovered singing in the stairwell by his school's headmaster. Encouraged by his peers, he began playing concerts, and his status grew. In 1987, he played a string of sold-out concerts in Casablanca, Rabat, and Marrakesh, in support of a children's charity. The success of these concerts secured him a record deal, and he went to Paris to record his debut single "Atfalouna" in 1988.

Speedball (Whizbang mix) (6:01)
Review: The iconic North London dance music duo Idjut Boys are famed for their nostalgia fueled offerings of dub, disco and house and join forces again for this 4 track single featuring 4 completely different takes on the track 'Speedball'. The 'Full Whip' version is an 80s powersynth with powerful kicks and synth perfection, an authentic use of a commodified sound used in the past couple of years. 'Severe Itching' takes the party downstairs into an acid techno rave, the liquid bass seeping through your ear canal into your skull - an utterly extraterrestrial experience. 'Strip Off Dub' is just that: a stripped back dub version of 'Full Whip'. Focusing on the heftier synths and bass, with the rushing wind effects that compromised 'Full Whip'. 'Whizbang Mix' invites you back into the bassment for another slice of acid house pie, the meeting point between 'Full Whip' and 'Severe Itching' that feels like trying to listen to the former after the laters aforementioned liquid has blocked your eardrums. This one's for the messy afterparty.

Calling Somewhere (14:52)
Review: Fans of mechanical techno-not-techno sounds will be all over Minimal Wave's latest transmission from 80s French underground heroes In Aeternam Vale. Having reissued several essential lost works from the outfit last year, most notably the proto-Sandwell sound of "Highway Dark Veins", Veronica Vasicka delivers another two tracks from the vault. Stylistically mirroring that previous two track release the title track is an equally brilliant synth-techno beast which could easily pass for a Function track today, while B-side "Calling Somewhere" sounds like a cold wave version of proto-halfstep. Needless to say, the fact that these tracks are 22 years old literally left us speechless.

Review: IMS these days usually stands for the annual Ibiza Music Summit that kick starts each summer sedans, but for this disco-loving diggers out there, it means just one thing: International Music System. Here we have the latest reissue of some classic Italo disco tunes from the much-loved outfit, all remastered once more. This trip of top tunes have been taken from their 1983 album and they sound as good now as ever. 'An English '93' is a strident cut with melodies washing over the face of the cold drums and big chord stabs. 'Run Away' then gets breezy on a summer groove, and closer 'Bubble Rap' has that super old school feel.

Review: After coming up while working in the Rush Hour record store in Amsterdam, Interstellar Funk has now branched out and established his own sound and his own label. And that is Artificial Dance, where he hooks up with Loradeniz for this interesting take on cold wave and synth. The tracks are underpinned by contemporary bass and deep groves which makes them perfect for club play but not at the expense of the melodies. They are curious, crystalline, freeform and mystic and help make this a handy record that brings something different - not least the new age ambiance of 'Situational Lullaby'.

Review: The next release on Persephonic Sirens comes from Inventory With Hamilton, which is the new project of label chief Michael Wollenhaupt (aka Ancient Methods) with Wahiba Khadri - who collaborate for the first time since 2018's The Jericho Records. Parting Galaxies On A Forlorn Leaderboard features four diverse sonic excursions that are presented in a singular style, yet still consistent with the label's dark aesthetic. From the electrifying imaginary film score of 'Petit Oratorio Des Oiseaux Migrateurs' which leads into the pitch black EBM pulse of 'Angstblute' over on the flip, and ending with the haunting cold wave of 'Lethe' - prepare to enter the void!

Into A Sampler (Kris Menace remix) (4:43)
Review: Vincent Fries second album as Italo Brutalo, the throbbing, darkwave and EBM-influenced heaviness of Heartware, has been given the remix treatment. There's eight high-grade, club-focused reworks to choose from, with our picks of a very strong bunch including CYRK's dark, twisted and funk-fuelled electro re-imagining of 'Reach Horizon', the glossy, big studio Italo-disco brilliance of Mufti's rub of 'Dream Machine' (think Stephen Hague producing the Pet Shop Boys circa 1986) and Shubostar's thickset, melody-rich, Bobby Orlando-influenced rework of 'Heat of the Night'. We'd also recommend checking out the two takes of 'Into a Sampler'. There's a raw, intense and breathless dark Italo-disco tweak courtesy of Fabrizio Mammarella, and a more chugging, atmospheric rewire by Kris Menace.

Review: Otis and Intheismah inaugurate the new Satelliet Studio label with some punchy, electro-tinted techno that should be of great interest to fans of artists like The Hacker. Otis has previously been spotted on labels like Partisan and EYA, which should give you some idea of his sound, while Andrea 'Intheismah' Sbardella makes a debut appearance on this release. There's an analogue warmth to the productions which is instantly engaging, not least on stand out EBM cut 'Evil (Is Going On)'. Swapping between solo tracks and joint efforts, the pair share a vision for darkly seductive machine music crying out for a basement cast in red light and an appropriately gnarly soundsystem.

Review: Dark Entries takes it back to New York City in around 1982 for this previously unreleased record from Ike Yard. This cult crew was made up of Stuart Argabright, Michael Diekmann, Kenneth Compton, and Fred Szymanski and they worked in their own realm somewhere between proto-body music and No Wave peers in New York. They disbanded just a year after forming having dropped an EP on Les Disques du Crepuscule in 1981 and then a self-titled album for Factory in 1982. Using the Korg MS-20 and the Roland TR-808 they cook up plenty of hybrid electro-acoustic sounds and ramshackle rhythms that are underpinned by moody baselines and perfect to get bodies moving in the club. Whether you're a post-punk fan or lover of weird electronics, this is well worth checking out.

Review: Amongst those who love New York's early '80s no-wave/post-punk scene, Ike Yard's 1982 debut album has long been regarded as something of an under-appreciated classic. Thanks to this reissue from Superior Viaduct, you can now judge for yourself. The band's sound is noticeably a lot more minimalistic than many of their contemporaries, mixing throbbing, low-slung basslines (think ESG or Liquid Liquid) with sparse, pulsing electronics, weird synthesizer sounds and stylish male vocals. It's a unique and hugely atmospheric sound that's as intense and paranoid as it is spaced-out and otherworldly. The album is full of highlights, but our picks include the percussively awkward "Loss", the creepy and clandestine "Kino" and the fiendishly alien sounding "Half A God".

Review: In The Nursery has always been a hard-to-pigeonhole proposition - a dark-wave, industrial and neo-classical outfit whose distinctive sound tends towards the cinematic but frequently blurs boundaries. Never was this more obvious than on the Sheffield-based outfit's 1990 album L'Esperit, which has now returned in expanded form, packaged in a rather natty metal tin. As with much of their work, it feels like a stirring, emotive soundtrack to a movie yet to be made, albeit one with some moody, heady and distinctive songs mixed in. This edition includes all 11 of the original tracks in remastered form, plus all four cuts from the 'Compulsion' EP, and six more gems recorded during the sessions for the album.

Review: This fresh new LP by Inconscio Viola, an experimental electronic duo from Greece, flaunts eight cuts of dark, ambient-atmospheric EBM and intersperses them with industrial and noise influences. Limited to just 50 copies, an aura of specialty adorns this one, with gothic gated snares and ghostly verbed-out shouts ricocheting across every track. Most riveting is the toothy saw line on 'Wounds', which sounds to peppered with the whispers and roars of a demon throughout.

Review: Recorded over the course of a single week during summer 2022, hauled up in a house on the stunning and serene shores of Lake Lugano, Passarella is an exercise in less as more. Spanning post punk, synth and dark wave, synth pop and more, the arrangements here aren't really minimalist, but share in a particular kind of functionality. Everything is in its right place, and there is absolutely nothing more. As such the aesthetics, and textures, are distinct in their rawness. There's more in common between Infesta's latest offering and the prototypes of these genres that were crawling out from the depths of cities such as Dusseldorf between the late-1970s and 80s than the vast majority of things produced today. Which isn't to write this off as pastiche or pure nostalgia, but to celebrate a pervading air of sonic adventure.

Review: Try Googling Influenza Pods in 2022 and you're unlikely to find the work of Bruno De Angelis and Giovanna Gulinello anywhere close to the top of the results. Add Memoire, the title of this LP, and things get even worse, with scores of pandemic diaries on offer for the grisly-minded. However, do a little digging and you'll soon realise these guys were among the pioneering electronic outfits of the late-1970s and 1980s, with this particular record a case in point.

Together the pair became a couple after moving to London, stayed there for a bit before heading back to Italy, where things began to formalise in terms of studio output. Often using recordings of dialogue from British soap operas, strange sounds and funky noises, they create heavily textured, subtly rhythmic and resolutely leftfield pieces that don't immediately invoke other artists and outfits. And there aren't many people you can really say that about.

Review: The members of Munich's Instant Music have all done their fair share of wonderful things throughout the 80s post-wave scene, but their one-off LP as Instant Music is the one that still gets all the praise, both from listeners and second-hand sharks, so it's only natural that the mythical Dark Entries have gone on to reissue it in all its glory. The 1981 album is a stand-out piece of work, managing to merge the very best of post-punk, synth-wave and, yes, even a little bit of proto-techno. The latter is heard mainly through its arrangements and bass tones, perfectly formed for dancefloor action...and domination. All of it is, of course, guided by the wonderfully subtle and minimalistic vocals of Marion Siekmann, who then went on to do great things with Ski Und Der Rest. Recommended!

Review: Ionnalee's 2018 debut album "Everyone Afraid To Be Forgotten" was superb, so hopes are high for the artist's similarly minded sequel. "Remember The Future" is a little bolder, shinier and more upbeat than its predecessor, though stylistically it still sounds like a 21st century update of Kate Bush's distinctive early '80s sound circa "The Dreaming" and "Hounds of Love". It's a dreamy, ethereal and otherworldly take on electronic pop that's always alluring and often memorable. The album's plentiful highlights include "Some Body", the superb Zola Jesus collaboration "Matters" - a deep, bubbly and intoxicating affair - and "Mysteries Of Love", an echoing, Royksopp-produced cover of a song from David Lynch and Angelo Badalamenti's "Blue Velvet" movie soundtrack.

Self & Selfish is a shining example of this: eight tracks of dark, minimal and melancholic songs that deal with themes of identity, alienation and love.
