Exit/Accidental (Abstract) (12" + artprint + MP3 download code in hand-stamped die-cut sleeve)
Cat: EM 01. Rel: 24 May 18
  1. Blank Order (4:34)
  2. Clean Slate (4:30)
  3. Liberia (4:06)
  4. Discover The Truth (4:58)
  5. Medium (0:36)
  6. Exit/Accidental (4:41)
Review: For their first trick, recently launched label Ex Machina presents a selection of tunes extracted from M. Finnkreig's 1988 debut cassette, Exit/Accidental. There's much to admire throughout, from the foreboding, fuzz-laden new beat pulse of "Blank Order" and "Clean State", to the bubby but moody, alternative synth-pop bustle of "Discover The Truth" and high-pitched, manipulated acappella vocal cut "Medium". Elsewhere, "Exit-Accidental" is a cheery and out-there chunk of pitched-down electro rich in moody, post-apocalyptic chords and stuttering sample stabs, and "Liberia" is a woozy collage of layered spoken word snippets, lilting synthesizer melodies and wobbly drum machine programming.

The Floor Mixes (limited hand-numbered blue vinyl 12" in hand-stamped sleeve)
Cat: MW 065. Rel: 19 Dec 17
  1. Five Times Of Dust - "Computer Bank" (The Floor mix) (7:12)
  2. Five Times Of Dust - "Armoured Car" (6:57)
  3. Unovidual & Tara Cross - "Like I Am, Comme Je Suis" (The Floor mix) (7:11)
  4. Unovidual & Tara Cross - "Imponative" (3:28)
Review: Thanks to the eternally revered Minimal Wave imprint, out of NYC, Mark Phillips and Robert Lawrence's Five Times Of Dust project is going through a bit of a revival. The duo had first released some post-punk cassettes back in the 80s, and they clearly have not been forgotten. On this new remix EP, "Computer Bank" is given a makeover in the form of a The Floor remix, who proceeds to add all sorts of quirkiness over the tune's tough, heavy bass and driving rhythm; "Armoured Car" breaks the 4/4 in favour of something much closer to the band's original drum machine style. Once again, on the flip, we have a remix of "Like I Am, Comme Je Suis" by The Floor, who throws up a gnarly electro bass onto shady, neo-romantic vocals, and the whole things is finished off by "Imponative" from Unovodual and Tara Cross, who produce a slow, heady industrial groove for the dancefloor.

  18. Luxury (4:03)
Review: Previously only available on CD back in 2001, this Best Of Fad Gadget collection finally lands on vinyl with inners including liner notes by Paul Morley. It draws on four of the cult band's most acclaimed albums and includes early singles like "Back to Nature", " Ricky's Hand; Handshake" and "Lady Shave." An undoubtedly large influence on the ensuing noise, industrial and EBM movements around Europe, this album highlights just how ahead of its time this music was with its angular guitars, dead pan vocals and twisted electronic sounds. Artful, roguish and energetic while being prescient on subjects like sexuality and mass media, this is an essential collection.

Review: Believe it or not, it's been eight years since Danny Wolfers aka Legowelt aka Smackos aka Venom 18 aka House of Jezebel - and many more - has released under the enigmatic Franz Falckenhaus moniker. As iconic and singular as this sound may be, it has been left to linger beautifully in the shadows. Until now. The Dutch synth God returns with Tupolev System, an instantly immersive LP that has been released courtesy of Vercetti Technicolor and Antoni Maiovvi's marvellous Giallo Disco. The album is one sound, with one vision, opting for a deeper and richer house sound that we're usually accustomed to with Wolfers. Blurring the lines between drone, ambient, house and post-wave, this LP flutters effortlessly form genre to genre, and from tempo to tempo. However, there is a constant and unmistakable touch throughout it. One that is grounded in European industrial culture, and one which will surely attract more than the usual 'outsider' house cats. Another magnificent piece of timeless electronic music from Danny Wolfers.

Review: More Than Human are based in Canada and have previously released records by Pye Corner Audio, Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe and Ekoplekz. Their next release comes from Faten Kanaan, a Brooklyn based artist who slowly builds songs by live-looping them into a narrative, without the use of sequencers or arpeggiators. His third full-length Foxes is loosely inspired by early Surrealist automatism, made-up languages, Middle-Eastern Hakawati storytellers, and the minimalist poignancy of mimes. Here, Fatan uses sound as an intuitive gesture to tell a wordless story, exploring intimacy, anxiety, mischief and restlessness.

Review: We're not going to introduce Frankie Goes To Hollywood to you because you should know who they are - just in case you don't - and you would have heard their timeless songs like "Timeless" played out left, right and centre. Liverpool, however, their 1986 album and their second LP, is a little less played-out and very representative of the rocky side of post-punk that was heavily popular from New York to London, and pretty much anywhere with dance floors. The mood is upbeat and groovy but, as with all of their work, there is a subtle layer of romanticism and melancholia, a perfect cocktail for a companion piece to pretty much everything and anything. We can't recommend this enough, especially seeing as the original is kinda hard to find these days..

  9. Nine Twelve (3:43)
  10. My New Trigger (4:20)
Review: Icelandic intrigue Fufanu deliver a second album in as many years, as always on London label One Little Indian, and following their Sports LP of 2017, The Dialogue Series presents eight tracks that touch on neon-lit synth pop ("Hourglass") to deeper, EBM and techno geared numbers like the darker, '90s trance-inspired "Chop Chop". At the other end of the spectrum, "Typical Critical" delivers something more seated in contemporary pop while overall the sound of the album eloquently touches on industrial and Italo elements to softer wave and indie. A band to be taken as seriously as much as they are to have fun with, there's a reason why Damon Albarn is such a fan too.

Dirty Frequencies (transparent with red & yellow splatter vinyl LP)

  2. Shout Out Loud
  3. Dirty D
  4. Forward
  5. Mary
  6. Dream (Don't Give Up)
  7. Cool Breeze
  8. Amen
Review: Emotional Response welcome Detroit's Fuxa to the label with a mini-album that takes their trademark pyschedelic guitar and synth instrumental rock and showcases the more spiritual and ethereal creativity running within. Specially curated from Fuxa's two recent digital only albums - "Dirty D" and "Frequencies for Physical, Mental and Spiritual Healing" - this special 8 track selection sees each album represented on one side of vinyl. Highlighting band leader Randall Neimann's talent, a mastery of the studio that creates a wall of (mellow) sound that envelops and encases in equal measure. While very much Randall's band, the colloborative nature of the project sees numurous artists appear, with members from Mazzy Star, Add N To (X), Dean & Britta, Spiritualized and founding member Ryan Anderson all providing willing support to seek his primal sound. Noteworthy too is his first appearance as lead vocalist. It is the uplifting to hear his voice on the celebratory Shout Out Loud, the paean of Dream (Don't Give Up) and finally the blissedout-surf-psychedelia of Amen. Dirty Frequencies is a welcome departure for the label, a pyschedelic turn in the mold of the Nick Nicely (ERS005) release, but all the better for it because these sounds and ideas deserve to be heard. An inner trip yes, but really a celebration of the deeper part of the soul - a way to connect.
