  2. Tao (5:34)
Review: New kids on the reissue block, New Zealand's Strangelove Music are off to a flying start with this beautiful 1983 art pop record from subversive chanteuse Lena D'Agua. "Jardim Zoologico" fuses electro boogie with Afrofunk with healthy measures of cosmic polish while "Tao" is a straight up Balearic gem that sparkles with sentiment and horizontal soul. Only ever released on Portuguese label Valentim De Carvalho, this reissue is over 30 years overdue.

The Sacred Project (160 gram white vinyl 12")
Cat: MW 011. Rel: 17 Jun 08
  1. Sacred Heart
  2. Sacred Blood
  3. Sacred Passion
  4. Sacred Dance
Review: This EP is a new and very welcome side of the Minimal Wave label that I didn't expect to find! In the same way that classic Chris and Cosey manage to do, Graham Philip D'Ancey's Sacred Heart has four solid cuts that simultaneously appeal to the Italo, Chicago house, minimal synth/cold wave AND deep house heads! It has the creepy tempo of some of the more mid-tempo cuts from Fingers Inc. (mainly instrumental though) mixed with the flourishes of Italo (see "Sacred Heart" and "Sacred Blood"). "Sacred Passion" has a little bit of the more obvious electro-pop stylings, but it's "Sacred Dance" (along with the aforementioned "Sacred Heart") that really takes the cake here. The track has the total thuddy crawl/synth stab of Theo Parrish's "Dirt Rhodes" or his synthy-er, recently re-released Parallel Dimensions album, but with a darker edge and unexpectedly great boogie down flutes in the mix! As always, this EP is housed in beautiful, very well thought out packaging plus a bit of a cherry on top: 160 gram white vinyl (a first for Minimal Wave.) This is an EP of rare beauty that will sound as great alongside Throbbing Gristle's "United" as it does, Fingers Inc.'s "Feeling Sleazy" or even a slow Lindstrom track! Recommended! 1. Triffid Farm
  2. We Can Rebuild Him
Review: Oh yes, we've been waiting on this reissue for quite some time! Originally out in 2009, Das Ding's "Triffid Farm" is one of those electro jams that simply stand out, and one which his fellow Dutch DJ's have been chucking on the decks a-go-go! The Rotterdam-based producer is elusive to say the least, but what you really need to know about him is how seductive his own personal brand of wave influenced electro is. "Triffid Farm" is a pulsating, ringing drum-machine track with a seriously funky dose of synth madness at its core - one for the heads AND the floor! On the flip, "We Can Rebuild Him" is nuttier, more Drexciyan in nature and just that little bit darker. Recommended.

  3. Sequence 3 (3:47)
  4. Sequence 4 (5:54)
Review: Back in 2014, Dutch Minimal Wave legend Danny 'Das Ding' Bosten released Sequencer, a cassette of recordings made using his own homebrew modular drum machine and a Casio SK1 loaded with a Mellotron sample. Issued by local Rotterdam label DeHef Tapes, it proved something of a cult addition to the small but deadly Das Ding discography. In a show of good faith, DeHef have licensed the four tracks to fellow Rotterdam crew Midlight for this limited, hand-stamped 10" edition which will delight the Das Ding fanatics who prefer their Bostenite on wax. Sequencer is not really comparable to the early Das Ding popularised by Minimal Wave, it's Bosten looking forward and sequential experimentation at its most rewarding. Fans of the more stripped down SUED stuff can probably vibe to this too!

  1. Nerd (4:58)
  2. Intermission (4:46)
Review: Danny Bosten's Das Ding project is no newcomer to the scene. In fact, the Dutch pseudo electro artist has been active since the mid-1980s via his quirky Tear Apart Tapes label, dealing specifically in cassettes until this new 7". "Nerd" is one of those tunes that crosses many genres and paths, taking the spirit of Kraftwerk and placing it onto a new plateau that is both relevant and inclusive of contemporary styles and ideas...that bassline could be left on for hours on end! "Intermission" is similarly leftfield, except that here Bosten scraps the buzzy bassline in favour of more tranquil sounds and samples that edge on the Japanese end of the spectrum. Recommended

  2. 16 (new mix) (5:01)
Review: Since Minimal Wave released a fine compendium of his early 1980s work as Das Ding back in 2009, Danny Bosten has become something of a cult artist. His latest missive on the re-born Tear Apart Tapes label is a tasty 7" featuring two new, all-analogue jams in his distinctive style. The title track is a boisterous and cheerily melodious affair, sitting somewhere between leftfield instrumental synth-pop and glistening Italo-disco. Flipside "16 (new mix)" is slower and more contemplative. It features bold electro bass, hip-hop tempo drum machine percussion, drowsy chords and woozy synthesizer melodies. It's the kind of analogue electronica that boasts a timeless quality, despite its contemporary construction.

Review: Though now famed as a top-drawer live performer with a string of acclaimed albums to her name, there was a time when Marie Davidson's music was less widely appreciated. In fact, when this eponymous EP first appeared on cassette in 2013, she was pretty much unknown. As you'd expect, it's perhaps a little more lo-fi than some of her more recent work, but that's what makes the EP so appealing. Check, for example, the sleazy vocals, distant drum hits and cascading melodies of creepy opener "Ma Vie Sans Moi", the unsettling lead lines, ricocheting cymbal hits and powerful drone bassline of "L'unique" and the dystopian, high-tempo minimal wave-goes-bleep techno trip that is "Le Lieu Ou Vous Voulez Vous Rendre"; all three remain amongst Davidson's most arresting cuts to date.

Review: A must for fans of Minimal Wave and Mannequin Records retroverts on offer here from Pascal Pinkert (Dollkraut) according to Knekelhuis themselves: he's working on his darker wave salvation, going by the moniker of De Ambassade. In the greyness by concrete of the Amsterdam suburbs. The dusty coldwave vibes on the title track are more reminiscent of X Mal Deutschland than Das Ding with its dark guitars and bass but it's still alright by us. On the flip is "Geen Grenade" a bit more pop-ish and upbeat. Something that you could imagine hearing in some Goth discotheque circa '83.

Review: Dark Entries has truly become a sensational imprint over the last few years, and they are showing no signs of stopping. In fact, they've just gotten better and better with each new release. We have a special one on our hands this time and, although the label have reissued a whole heap of glorious material, this is NEW music from the very best out there. Chicago industrial-tech-goth Beau Wanzer teams up with Unknown Precept's Maoupa Mazzocchetti, and the dup get on like a house on fire under their new De-Bons-En-Pierre moniker. Crepes is a gnarly little EP, blurring the lines between techno, EBM and industrial, but doing so in a way that makes the three genres sound like they should never ever be apart from one another. "Whole Body Irradiator", for instance, has all the beat elements of techno and yet the sounds are drenched in a punky, fuck-you kinda style that would make the Berghain faithful run for their lives, while we could easily imagine the torn, glitchy beats of "Francine" residing on some long-lost post-punk 7 inch from the likes of Pete Shelley. This is some mad gear - don't miss it.

Review: As good as the Alessio Natalizia-curated Mutazione compilation issued by Strut was, alot of people praising it seem unaware that the Rome-based Mannequin label have been tirelessly documenting music from Italy's vast archives of untapped synth music since the label was founded some five years ago. This 12" makes for a perfect example and is one of three releases from Mannequin that highlights the new wave scene that prospered in 1980s Turin. Close Your Eyes is an extended 12" edition of the solo single recorded and released by Politburo band member Tommy De Chirico back in 1984. Originally issued as a two track 7" on the Shirak imprint, this edition features a rare demo version of the title track as well as two previously unheard tracks from the De Chirico archives.

Review: Sam De La Rosa has already appeared on Berlin's Mannequin, under the Samuel KK moniker, but it's time to hear what he has to offer under this comparatively more sullen alias. "Earth Wart" is exactly that, a candid slice of neo-romaticism for the melancholics out there, while "I Hear The Swine" takes a more direct approach thanks to tough drum machine beats and almost Gregorian voices from De La Rosa himself. "Racist Cops On A Jog" does a good job of opening the B-side with a bit of house charm, all mightily crestfallen - of course - which leaves the pale colours of "RED" to drop the listener into a freeform glow of ambient delight. Another dose of Mannequin...

Review: There's something strangely alluring about this curious - but undoubtedly inspired - debut EP from Belgian producer Victor De Roo. While brand new, it draws influence from a variety of vintage styles - Berlin school ambient, new wave, The Duratti Column and leftfield European synth-pop, in particular - and sounds like it could have been recorded straight to cassette in about 1984. De Roo's quirky, atmospheric musical sketches - the slo-mo early morning dream pop of "Voorbenachte Rade", spacey synth-scape "Beland In Bed", post-punk Factory Records drone of "Nachtdichter" and beautiful opener "Gewoon" - all come accompanied by stylish spoken word vocals by fellow Low Countries resident Alex Deforce, whose Flemish drawl adds an extra layer of cultured artiness.

  2. Consequences Of Love (Chris & Cosey remix) (5:47)
Review: Ahead of an impending, headline performance at this year's edition of Berlin Atonal, Richard Fearless opens up his Death In Vegas project to the Industrial icons that are Chris & Cosey. It's "Consequence Of Love," an early highlight of the most recent DIV LP, Transmission, that is the focus of attentions here, and arguably a track that looks to Chris Carter and Cosey Fanni Tutti's Throbbing Gristle for inspiration. The original version is presented here on 12" format for those Death In Vegas loving selectors out there who want a loud pressing of the track and the accompanying Chris & Cosey remix does take it to a different place. That breathy vocal is given more prominence and fairly dominates the remix.

Having contributed the track "After Dark" to The End Of Civilisation, a compilation curated by Mushy that Mannequin released early last year, Deathday return to the label with a more comprehensive showing of their distinct sound. Along with the unreleased title track, the 12? also includes "Dropped Into Obscurity," the electrically charged opening contribution to last year's excellent Downwards compilation So Click Heels, and excitingly, a remix of "After Dark" from Lowlands analogue mystic Legowelt.

  2. On & On (Fears Keep On) (dub version) (8:03)
Review: Mannequin Records first reissued Decadence's essential Italo-disco anthem "On & On (Fears Keep On)" back in 2014. Since every pressing Alessandro Adriano's label has done of the 1983 gem has sold out, they've decided to do another run. If you've yet to acquire a copy, you should certainly cop one of these. The A-side vocal version is particularly potent; a stylish, new wave influenced chunk of bubbling Italo-disco that's far less cheery and celebratory than your average Italo cut. In fact, it's rather gothic in tone, something not often associated with Italian electronic music of the period. On the flip you'll find an inspired Dub that includes plenty of tape-edits, drum delays and sparsely mixed vocal snippets. We prefer this mix, though both versions are superb.
