Discussion
RITM
The Heat Makers
Review: Representing the more full-bodied end of Romanian club output at present, Oprea Timpu debuts on Vara Spesial with a track that leans on the stripped-down breakbeat aesthetic but rubs a little more fire into its bones, with drum hits that come on sharp and dynamic and a more fluid approach to the arrangement. "Discussion" especially works some choppy detail into the production, with all the fleeting samples and hits creating a more exciting kind of tracky floor burner. "Ritm" simmers things down to a more measured and methodical path, but there's still plenty of atmospheric interference to keep things interesting. "The Heat Makers" represents the more linear offering on the release, but it's certainly not without its intricacies.

Amsyt (Vadim Svoboda remix)
Half Together
Review: Storming into his debut year with a second release, Levi Verspeek is now making moves on Body Parts with the Hans EP, and he's sounding ever stronger with it. "Amyst" kicks things off in a funky style with a crisp line on broken beat shaking up the minimal tones with the kind of jazz-inflected groove you might hear Tom Ellis lay down. "Mirehc" takes a more slinky route into delineated rhythms, staying deep down in a slender beat and submerged chords, and then "Half Together" gets into a truly scratchy micro-funk frame of mind with excellent results. Providing something of an alternative flavour with his remix, Vadim Svoboda gets the energy level up for a distinctly peppy remix of "Amyst".

#ff066 A
#ff066 B
Review: Operating as a sublabel of RORA, Ode has so far issued forth two other anonymous releases of hypnotic, experimental minimal techno with the elegant twirls and swirls that are keeping things deep and meaningful in the scene today. On the third release, another two sublime tracks unfurl around delicate melodies, alien frequencies and lightly scattered percussion that meld into a beautiful, winsome whole. The A side is the truly floaty offering with its light, airy tones and cheery demeanour, while the B side burrows into a moodier mindset through some soothing bass and curious vocal oddities, swerving any need to get people by moving in an obvious way by tapping into a more esoteric, meditative state.

Don't Touch The Alarm
Don't Touch The Alarm (Booka Shade remix)
Review: It seems like new artist-run labels are ten a penny these days, but coming from the much-loved Hot Since 82, Knee Deep In Sound promises to be a cut above the rest. The producer has wisely opted to open proceedings with one of his own tracks; entitled "Don't Touch The Alarm", it's a dark, moody piece of rolling club music that cranks up the tension with its edgy synths and staccato chords, and shows that the producer means business on his new label endeavour. The producer has also scored something of a coup for the flipside, reigning in pioneering duo Booka Shade to rework the track in their signature style, which has been much imitated but never bettered.

Kilimanjaro 4
Review: There's minimal house goodness aplenty from this latest release on the Fuse imprint, with top dog of the outfit Enzo Sirgausa linking up with long-standing French champ Alexkid for three surefire club rockers. "Kilimanjaro 2" gets busy with its shuffly beat and wobbling sub bass, but there's still room for a blissful breakdown rich in sweeping pads and vocal licks. "Kilimanjaro 3" follows a similar groovy tact, with a more punchy bassline adding to the cheeky bump of the cut to great effect. Then "Kilimanjaro 4" rounds things off with a more spartan effort that places all the low end thump on the kick and keeps the top end percussion more delicate and poised for a different kind of effect in the heart of the night.

Dana Ruh - "Overcome"
Patrice Meiner - "Uva"
Miss Jools - "Calamity Cloud"
Review: After the runaway success of the Dilated Pupils release, bright young imprint Sol Asylum kicks off release number three with more sublime stripped down house business from a triple whammy of production talent. Dana Ruh spreads across the A side with a swirling, dubby jam that has no trouble in getting its head deep down in the groove. On the flip side, Patrice Menier drops a tight shuffler with ethereal pads and tones drifting eerily in the background, and Miss Jools wields a carefully shimmering synth hook with a delicate touch around a clean and crisp beat with just a smattering of found sound filling out the gaps.

Conjure Superstar
Review: When the hitters are as big as Maceo Plex and Kompakt, there's no need for trite B side distractions and so this single-sided release comes forth with exactly the kind of anthemic, pop-straddling tech house that you would expect from such a combination. There may be edgy arpeggios and chunky drums powering the rhythm of the track, but with the straining emotional vocal and romantic pad sweeps, this is a track to garner appeal across the board, and not at the expense of the impact this will have in a club. It won't take long to learn the words, so before the summer is out you can expect plenty of people to be cooing along dreamily to this bright and bold belter.

Mental Kombat (Ricardo Villalobos & Heiko Mso Chic Soup remix)
Planet Wall
Ever Body
Review: In a curious twist on the usual reissue fare, Chiwax have laid their hands on Sneaky Tim's classic 1994 Dance Mania release and given the A-side over to Ricardo Villalobos and Heiko Schafer to drop a remix of "Mental Kombat" with all the minimal quirkiness that you would expect from the pair. Meanwhile on the flipside the original version of "Planet Wall" sounds as flawless as ever, marching forth with its wistful chord hook and sax lick putting a necessary ruffness into sublime deep house. "Ever Body" turns the heat up with its garage bump and nagging vocal chant, primed to set off any peak time situation.

Holdie Gawn - "Moon Ride"
Micawber - "Vattum"
Review: As the Sylphe outfit makes a welcome return with another pair of adventurous minimal cuts it's pleasing to find their sound making continuous steps forward into fresh atmospheric realms. Holdie Gawn's "Moon Ride" especially shines with its bewitching melodic composition, capturing the titular inspiration perfectly without pandering to typical 'spacey' chord structures and instead delivering something utterly distinctive. Micawber meanwhile takes a more intricate and classic minimal techno approach, twisting out thick consignments of stripped down rhythm with enough clout to make even more maximal DJs take note. In the lingering icy notes in between the beats the soul comes through in spades, which seals the deal on another essential EP from the shadowy Sylphe crew.

Infiltrate
Open Sun
Suburbs
Review: The Romanian minimal breaks charge keeps on coming, with emergent label Vara offering up fresh talents K-NTO and Bayt to deliver their own vision of funky rhythms played out in subtle formations. "Infiltrate" leads the way with a supremely detailed and immaculately produced beat plunging into a sparse soundscape inhabited by distant industrial hums and hisses, leaving it "Open Sun" to let a little more warmth in with a gently pulsing chord that sits comfortably against the smattering of loose-limbed percussion. "Suburbs" has a jazzier feel to its groove, and that's no bad thing as the most house orientated cut on the record. Just wait until that extra hi-hat kicks in...

Cally - "Doi"
Cristi Cons - "Reverie"
Moratu - "Cerc 3"
Dr Kozo - "Ultima Ploaya"
Review: Such is the ever prosperous market for minimal techno labels hailing from Romania these days, new imprints really need to launch with a statement in order to make a name for themselves. It's fair to say the newly minted Soulsity label based out of Craiova do that with their inaugural release, Unity Vol 1, which spreads five tracks across two slabs of vinyl. Double pack alert! Musically, this collection hints that Soulsity embraces diversity with the fluttering, groove laden dubby sweetness of "Feelomatic2" by Marsomatic700 and Cally's "Doi" the most minimally minded productions here. The D Side offers some interesting deviation with Dr Kozo's "Ultima Ploaya" a polyrhythmic delight.

Review: Treatment is a new label and artist to come out of Germany providing a deep, minimal and techy house sound. It's a given these artists and labels are a dime-a-dozen, but the good stuff is inherently good and this record's been give the A-grade treatment. Side-1 is a cold and rhythmic slice of haunted atmospheres with spoken words and alien chimes circulating its ether. It's the B-side however which offers the high-grade minimalism with pitter-pattering drums, subby bass pulses and a scratchy percussion loop which sounds like a door being locked repeatedly underwater. Choice cuts.

Review: This is the second release from the non-descript Berg label which made itself known last year with Berg 01, by, Berg. Who Berg is, we're not sure yet, but what we do know is Berg can make the minimal and dubby stuff that a Berlin scene loves. On this second edition "Gramm" is the best example of this and a throbbing sequence of repetitive pads make a bed for clucking tribal percussion rhythms roll around in. The B-side is again minimal and it's carried by a woozy bassline and soft dub chords that are detuned to every note. Chilled out, foot shuffling stuff.

Common Chorus (original)
Common Chorus (Rhadoo remix)
Review: While he may have previously only popped up amongst other like-minded minimal heads, Xandru now has his chance to step into the spotlight with a release on Welt. It's not hard to hear the influence of older Ricardo Villalobos material looming large over "Common Chorus", from the snatches of female vocal to the endless hypnotism of the cyclical beat, all simmered down to a seriously reduced murmur. With apparent ties thanks to his choice to include Xandru on his Fabric mix, Rhadoo makes a smart choice of remixer for the flip side, and he takes the opportunity to weave all manner of freaky sounds into the structure of the track without losing the shape and feel of the original. This is one for the most minimal of minimal lovers.

Different Bass
Different Bass (Ricardo Villalobos remix)
Review: It was Felipe Valenzuela and Jkco Mosqueira that successfully inaugurated Melisma's arrival in the physical realm nearly a year ago so it makes perfect sense for the Swiss label to welcome the pairing back for this third 12" offering. In much the same way that Better Than Less was made all the more enticing by the presence of a Ryan Crosson remix, Different Bass will appear on many minimal selector's radars due to the B Side rework from Mr Villalobos. However, you shouldn't brush aside Valenzuela and Mosqueira's original in a rush to worship at Ricardo's altar as "Different Bass" is quite the idiosyncratic little groover. For his own part, Villalobos expertly turns the track inside on itself, lending proceedings a more minimal edge without losing the original's flavour.

Motormouth (Matrixxman Replicant remix)
Review: After the most recent Audion single dropped last year, Spectral Sound have commissioned a host of top-drawer remixers to tackle Matthew Dear's alias for a devoutly modern approach to his tricky minimal style. Daniel Avery takes on "Sky" with a full-bodied analogue approach that melds his trademark emotive tones into a popping and sizzling version draped in ethereal elegance. Scuba meanwhile drops a taut and restrained version of the same track that plies a powerful bass note and some tumbling percussion. On the flip Matrixxman delivers two different version of "Motormouth" that respectively deal in chunky cyclical rhythms and trickier bleepy fare that do full justice to the original material.

Fyrrelo
Review: Under the name Kreon, Greek producer Markos Spanoudakis has been steadily cultivating a trippy brand of minimal electronics that's seen him appear on a nice range of labels (Robsoul, Plastic City, Quantized). This Spin Off 12" for the fledgling aeternum Music label may represent the first solo offering from Kreon in over two years but the London-based producer has lost none of the production flair that's characterised his previous output. There's an immersive quality to the lead track "Loferte", with a thick abstract groove that really grabs your attention, whilst the textural detail feels as it's constantly shifting and mutating adding an extra rhythmic element. "Fyrello" is just as wonderfully abstract with some particularly mind bending percussive layers and sandwiched inbetween is "Rollajoin" which is a simpler, rolling number that DJs will get plenty of mileage out of.

Review: Crazy 12" from Rush Hour's No 'Label' operation which really offers some insight into the deranged production mind of Irish producer and selector Morgan Buckley. Not only does Shout Out To All The Weirdos In Rathmines possess one of this year's best titles, it possesses some of the most distinctive music put to wax in 2014. There's plenty of mixtape potential across the four tracks be it the Charles Manier does psyche rock of "Call Incoming" or the pure mind bending psychedelia of "Inner City Hum" on the A Side or the more floor friendly bump of the two B Side cuts. More please Mister Buckley.

Review: Having another John Heckle release on the Liverpool-based Tabernacle Records is like The Beatles collaborating with Ravi Shankar again - it's always welcome. This time around it's Heckle's 2013 album Desolate Figures which gets remixed and first up is Greek producer Vercetti Technicolor, known to Simoncino's HotMix label, who supplies a vamp-heavy and empowering Italo remix of "Inhuman Nature". Peoples Potential Unlimited artist Moon B goes tropical with a choir of synthesised vocals in his 're calc' of "Power Of Two", while Call Super proves to be this record's wild card adding a gorgeous 'Cyan Stain' to the track "Love Lies".
