Review: Surely not even the most ardent Bowie fan saw any of this coming. Yet to offset the justified grief and mourning at the most otherworldly and mercurial of all musical icons departing our realm, he's left us with one of his greatest albums to date and certainly his best in a full quarter century - one that returns him spiritually to the dizzying collision of bracing experimentation and melodious drama that typified the so-called Berlin trilogy of the '70s yet transplants that ambience to a new more complicated age. Jazzy inflections, electronic filigree and stark soundscapes collide elegantly amidst that stentorian voice, and whether or not Bowie put this together as a farewell, he couldn't have done it better if he'd tried. We'll truly never see his like again, alas.

Review: Inspired by the slightly unlikely collision of the Thai music of the '70s and The Shadows, Khruangbin - the name means 'aeroplane' in Thailand - are purveyors of a deliriously mellow and beguiling form of jammed-out power-trio guitar music - far removed from standard notions of psych and dreampop, partly owing to its pan-global influences, its nonetheless both psychedelic and dreamy, not to mention possessed of an unhurried, reflective and spacious lilt that renders this Texan-London outfit a rare treat in an information-saturated age, taking on delicate soul and funk with exotic atmospheres and making the journey feel both blissful and effortless.

Review: Whilst a disproportionate amount of cultural noise has been made regarding the punk rock revolution of the late-'70s, a good deal of what actually transpired and has since been celebrated essentially amounts to yet more rock orthodoxy in different clothing. This balance is redressed by this invigorating and inspiring collection, put together by Glasgow's redoubtable aesthetes Optimo, and chronicling a time when many young ingenues were genuinely inspired to pick up instruments with nary a rulebook in sight - bands like Fatal Microbes, Spunky Onions and The Prats may never have stood a chance commercially, yet the gloriously unreconstructed racket of this collection bristles with enduring energy and electricity.

Review: It can be something of a surprise to know that Young Gun Silver Fox hail from modern-day London, as the sound of this album couldn't be more '70s-tinged and Californian if it was sporing sideburns, reefer-in-hand and discussing the Watergate scandal. Redolent of the like of Steely Dan, The Doobie Brothers and even The Eagles, 'West End Coast' thankfully has chops and talent to stand as much more than a mere retro curiosity or museum piece - ditties like 'You Can Feel It' and 'In My Pocket' channel vocalist Andy Platts' falsetto croon, heavenly harmonies and AM radio production to considerable satisfaction for all.

Review: Put it down to geographical isolation or simply a more vivid imagination that most, but this Russian troupe had already set their stall out as an outfit fit to take shoegaze and dreampop paradigms and reinvent them in innovative and startlingly luminous style. 'Grandfeathered' however is another quantum leap again, as Pinkshinyultrablast lurch into the unknown with a sound equal parts earthbound heaviness and sky-kissing rapture. Yet the beauty of this record is that it generally sounds like a step forward for a genre oft mired in retrospective reverence - if a multiplication sum of the ethereal and emotional strains of Sigur Ros and the glacial electronica of M83 sounds like your poison, look no further,

Review: These have been troubled times for the Brooklyn four-piece Diiv, who've not only lost their drummer to drug addiction but have seen vocalist Zachary Cole Smith battling both rehab and police attention in the run-up to this album. Lucky for everyone, however, they've channelled the tribulations into a bittersweet and rich selection of shoegaze-tinged indie-rock ditties that display both an understated sleight-of-hand and a cinematic sweep. Redolent of giants like The Cure and Smashing Pumpkins yet possessed of their own radiant charm, Diiv remain as irresistible as their name is unpronounceable.

Review: We're led to believe that the gestation period of this, Animal Collective's tenth album to date, was briefer than their earlier work - not that one would notice, given that 'Painting With' displays a band capable of cramming more ideas into one song than most manage in an album. Indeed, the band have scarcely sounded this poppy, upbeat or ebullient, revelling in a collision of polyrhythmic invention, Beach-Boys-on-Venus harmonies, kaleidoscopic sampladelia and sugar-rush intensity. Moreover, for all that their trademark sound has helped shape much of the psychedelia of this century, this foursome are not disposed to rest on their laurels, and this is the sound of them harnessing their creativity as if there were no tomorrow.

Review: Formerly of lo-fi duo MMOSS, Doug Tuttle has emerged in his own right as an exceptional psychedelic troubadour, and more importantly one as adept at chronicling the darker side of the sound of the '60s and '70s - beyond the exquisite Byrdsian harmonies on show here and the dabbling with Fairport-esque British folk rock, a sense of uncertainty and heartache lurks amidst the pastoral idyll of the songwriting and delicate arrangements. All those recently enamoured of Jacco Gardner or disappointed by the second Fleet Foxes album will find much to admire in this melancholy and autumnal tapestry.

Review: Thirty years plus from the moment they left their goth fleapit origins to become full-fledged leather-trousered rock gods. there remains something strangely ageless about The Cult. Built since time immemorial on the chemistry between shamanic vocalist Ian Astbury and legs-splayed axeman Billy Duffy, there remains a spark and prowess to the band's sound that renders them way more than mere nostalgia act or cliche-perpetrators. Benefitting from a surprising taste and understatement of arrangement closer to Nick Cave than Velvet Revolver, even whilst dependent on bluesy hollering and Marshall stack deliverance as ever, 'Hidden City' is a thoughtful yet engagingly vibrant collection that displays plenty of life in these fine old hounds yet.

Review: The mission statement of this duo in the run-up to 'Cascades' was apparently to create a distinctly Australian-sounding album. It's debatable whether these glistening guitar curlicues and reverb-drenched plateaus are necessarily Antipodean, but they certainly make the chill of British winter seem a long way away. Now relocated to Brooklyn, the duo deal out a dreamlike collection of synth-gorged and texturally rich soundscapes with melody and melancholy to spare. Oceanically inclined yet staring at the stars, songs like 'Catch The Wind' and the rapturous title cut are sure to satisfy admirers of Tame Impala fans with a longing for electronic sophistication, not to mention a lot more folks besides.

A rich confection of textured, chorus-soaked guitars, angelic vocal incandescence and breezy charm, 'Human Ceremony' is indie with a capital 'I'. Yet despite summoning the spectres of Lush, Galaxie 500 and Pale Saints, there's more to this band that mere yellowing-Melody-Maker Proustian rush . Indelible melody, steely attitude and a refreshing economy of sound make Sunflower Bean a band with both chops and charm enough to transcend retro trappings.

Review: Thus London-based five some may seem at first to be entranced by the two-chords-good mindset bequeathed to the world by Spacemen 3 and The Brian Jonestown Massacre, yet there's far more to 'The Album Paranoia' than mere heavy-lidded psych attack. There's off-kilter pop suss aplenty, with warped, Barrett-esque melody and eccentric charm in the tradition of Pavement and Sonic Youth, yet a sense of sonic adventure prevails throughout, as dreamstates are warped and guitar monomania gives way to psychedelic experimentation. These ten tracks are fit to expand the horizons of every self-respecting space cadet.
