Wish You Better
It Is Not Easy
There Is A Place For Us
Review: The third part of Shackleton's triumvirate of EPs opens with "Wish You Better", a fluttering composition whose bassline and dystopian pads are initially reminiscent of early Detroit techno - in the hands of anyone else it would be a mess, but this is Shackleton we're talking about. "It Is Not Easy" opens with a plucked and percussive melodic intro that sees Shackleton channeling Steve Reich's "Music For 18 Musicians" before launching into a dark but restrained bass assault. "There Is A Place For Us" is a fitting end to the trilogy as an extended drone opening is offered balance with a suitably melancholic outro, rich in Eastern strings.

Need A Job
Together In The Dust
Review: Having already hinted at it on his album Under The Ice, this is his first full sub-low exploration of the murky world of dubstep; and each of the four tracks on offer are true, hypnotic treats. All to be filed under the more rhythmical, loopy, techno-inspired dubstep sub category; "BCN" struts with fancy footwork and deep chilling synths, "Acid Step" slithers with a slinky, stripped back formula that'll work well for warm ups and transitions, "Need A Job" takes dubstep by way of Detroit while "Together In Dust" finishes the set with a truly trippy signature.

Do The Jazz
Under The Sun
If I Was A Super Hero
Review: Mala's Deep Medi imprint seemingly stands alone in their efforts to ensure the founding principles of dubstep are retained, while not being afraid to release music that will smudge the boundaries of people's expectations. The label's latest 12" encapsulates this perfectly, with Butterz alumnus Swindle debuting in style with the bizarrely brilliant "Do The Jazz". If you've been tuned into the more tuned on shows on Radio One you have probably heard this track as the likes of Mistajam and Toddla T have been big supporters, but for those coming to this twelve with fresh ears don't be alarmed by the jazz licks of the opening bars; when that bass line rips through devastation will unfold. The deranged approach to the dancefloor with the piston driven sounds of "Under The Sun" while "If I Was A Superhero" realigns the Mothership Connection to a 140bpm flex.

(For The) Love Of Weeping
Touched
Seven Presents Tenses
Powerplant
Review: For an artist with such beguiling ways, Shackleton has been pleasingly prolific with his output of late. Giving a chance to those who didn't jump on the album box set which sold out instantly, this EP picks up the music he has made led from the influence of a drawbar organ. The organ takes centre stage on "Seven Present Tenses", while "Touched" comes on like classic brooding Shack, all subby tones and rattling percussion. "(For The) Love Of Weeping" has an interesting electro slant in its beat, only to be offset by dulcet gamelan tones. It's as starkly original an EP as you would expect from the maverick mastermind.

In Deep
Review: There are certain artists whose style you can always count on for consistency, and if there's one artist whose style oozes out of every pore, it's Jimmy Edgar. Ever committed to emitting a highly sexed take on electro, the Detroit native has slid from one electronic institution to another flaunting his wares. From his breakthrough releases on Warp to his last album on !K7, the framework for his crisp edits, glossy synths and suggestive (at the very least) vocals has remained the same, and now he makes a home for himself in the ever-broadening climes of Hotflush. There's certainly points in Majenta where it feels like Jimmy is trying less to show off his considerable skills for micro-edits, instead just trying to make something a little more simplistically feel-good. The chances are if you're signing up for a Jimmy Edgar album, you know what you're in the mood for, and there's plenty of that sleazy funk to sink your teeth into here, but in a crafty move he saves the big surprise for last. "In Deep" kicks off on a choppy vocoder jam like a modern Zapp & Roger; nothing out of the ordinary there. It's as the track builds to its climax that it reaches a bombastic album-closing high, creeping in some a heavy break and epic stabs that sound like a tribute to Art of Noise, that you really hear another side to Jimmy Edgar. It's a tantalising glimpse at what else the man is capable of.

Deep Dubstep
The Clash
Highest Strain
Review: Deep Medi Musik expand operations with the addition of The Dub Mechanics, a South London duo formed of the K Man and Mr Kerox whose approach to dubstep leans heavily on the genre's influence from Dub. On the basis of this, it's not hard to see why Mala would want to release their music and the two tracks here justify his faith in the duo. "The Clash" comes stacked with the sort of trad-dubstep traits you expect to hear on a Deep Medi release, jagged sub bass rises and drops over choppy vocal edits and snappy drums and will be familiar to anyone that's dropped a shoulder to Mala in a club over the past few months. "Highest Strain" shows the duo in more contemplative mood, fully exploring the Dub sounds that influence them so much and offers an excitingly melodic contrast to the A Side. More please Deep Medi.

Skitta
I Think You Should Know (feat Newham Generals)
I Think You Should Know (feat Newham Generals - extended instrumental version)
Review: After an elongated dalliance with major label business for his debut album on 4AD, the Purple one known as Joker goes back to basics with a long overdue return to home label Kapsize. "Skitta" has been high on the list of "must release them" Joker productions for a while now, with signature space in the rhythms letting him go all out on the cosmically charged, trance inducing purple textures and bouncing subs. On the flip, Joker teams up with Newham Generals for "I Think You Should Know" which sees the lyrical flow of Footsie and D Double expertly roll over a funked out beat. There's an extended instrumental flip from Joker too for those who like their thang free of vocals.

Habit
Inventing
Review: Despite his productions being of a consistently high quality, Al Tourettes blend of deft electro and dark UKF inflected bass still hasn't gained the same level of notoriety as that of his peers - which is criminal given how likely these tracks are to smash up the dance. Hopefully this release on Sneaker Social Club will go someway to rectifying that - "Habit 7" goes in hard with frantic snares, dubbed out chords and a gnawing bassline which tunnels deep into the mix, whilst "Inventing" is one for the Swamp81 heads - coming on like a jam between Boddika and Roska, filled with complex, clipped rhythms held together with elastic. Highly recommended.

Hustle With Speed
State Of Flux
Gillet Sq N16
E 2 Da P
Review: Big Dada win the prize for most genre defying release of the week as the label coaxes the Bristol legend that is Dobie out of hiding with a stunning four track release. The name won't be familiar to younger heads, but Dobie has a far too impressive rack of production credits dating back to working on Soul II Soul's first few albums and will always have a place in the Juno Review Staff's hearts for a sublime two part remix of Bjork's "I Miss You". Last seen on Brownswood dropping an equally peerless exploration of beat patterns, Dobie returns with the Nothing To Fear EP which draws on all manner of sounds yet retains its own unique style. Lead track "Hustle With Speed" sounds akin to Aybee melding elements of Domu and Maurice Fulton together with monolithically bass heavy results, while "State Of Flux" evens out the rhythmic kinks to some sort of alien speed garage dipped with acid overtones. On the flip you might be mistaken for thinking Hieroglyphic Being had started making 24th century variants on the Diwali riddim with "Gillet Sq N16", while "E 2 Da P" plunges faint strains of vocal soul deep into the murkiest recesses of industrial beatdown.

Blue Sleet
90 Years
Fat City
Almost Transparent
Review: From the opening bars of opener "Blue Sleet", the influence of grime in Slackk's latest missive for the excellent Local Action is obvious - a precise matrix of thin eski synths, composed into interlocking parallelograms of luminous green, accompanied by salvos of rattling claps. "Fat City" takes a similar formula and inverts it, creating a particularly mournful instrumental with a sluggish beat, inspiring images of a rain soaked sink estate. "Almost Transparent" meanwhile, positively swims with melodic charm, and despite going heavy on the Eastern synth flutes and thin marimba stabs it has enough gravitational pull in the thick low end to keep the whole thing grounded. But the real gut punch is "90 Years", the only track that eschews any kind of melody for sheer dancefloor power - utilising industrial snares alongside some thick cylinders of laser bass that feel like they've been fired by an orbiting death ray. Fantastic stuff - and shows the trad house bass wannabes how it's done.

Test Tubes
Dipping
Katyusha
Review: While much of The Drawbar Organ is as fiercely experimental as you'd expect from a man like Shackleton, this second EP in the series will perhaps find favour with those more enamoured with his more driving productions. "Test Tubes" is one such track - nearly 10 minutes of rotor blade bass and ascending melodies which recall the darker qualities of Pinch collaboration "Rooms Within A Room" and his "Deadman" offering, whilst "Katyusha" maintains the tempo with a slightly more Eastern slant to its melody. Even the two minute "Dipping" which is sandwiched between the two tracks has a sense of urgency holding together its swarm of raw tones.
