Conzi - "Kway" (4:12)
Ehua - "Venom" (4:51)
Zygos - "'11" (4:01)
Jamiu - "Rasaks" (4:47)
Review: Full 140 futurism right here from burgeoning London label Cutcross as four exciting new-gen artists from across Europe flex their sub muscles. Conzi lights the smouldering fire with 'Kway', a smoking slab of roomy dubstep primed strictly for big systems. Ehua follows with an even deeper piece of club bass as she weaves startling atmospheres between spacious percussion. Elsewhere Belgium's Zygos fires off some heavy sirens before Jamiu (a UK artist who used to be known as Perspective) brings the whole EP to a juicy and joyously unsteady finale with the rattling percussion and heavy dub echoes of 'Rasaks'. Cutting edge bass.

Mr K & DPRTNDRP - "Suppression" (dub) (5:11)
Quasar & Nova - "Witchcraft" (dub) (5:09)
Saule & Centauri - "Tyrant" (5:10)
Teffa & Sound Unknown - "Hide & Seek" (4:42)
Review: Dubstep doesn't get much deeper than the tunes on this meaty new Various Artists collection from 786. The title suggests it is the start of a new ongoing series, which is music to the ears of bass fiends everywhere. Mr K & DPRTNDRP kick off with 'Suppression,' with its menacing energy and churning hits, while Quasar & Nova team up for the excellent low end wobble and playful sense of funk that is deeply embedded in the rhythm of 'Witchcraft.' Saule & Centauri's 'Tyrant' is a pressurised cut with a freaky vocal and edgy synth stabs over woden hits. Sparse but atmospheric, it's just one of four killers here. The last is the drilling bass weight of Teffa & Sound Unknown's mystic 'Hide & Seek.' Great stuff.

Dubpower (5:21)
Reckoning (6:05)
Inner City (5:26)
Review: Surge hails from Croydon, widely considered the birthplace of dubstep. We mention this because there's definitely a classic dubstep feel to his first outing on Artikal. For proof check lead cut 'Dubpower', where dark (synth) strings and lead lines reminiscent of early DMZ productions spar with pitched-down rastaman vocal samples and creepy chords atop echo-laden beats and insanely weighty sub-bass. This retro-futurist feel continues on the horror-flecked late-night rumble of 'Reckoning', whose moody, post-apocalyptic ambient intro quickly makes way for aggressive wobble bass, effects-laden beats and spine-chilling melodic refrains.

Badlandz (4:41)
Submersible (4:56)
Laniakea (4:52)
Primal Instinct (5:27)
Review: Bristol's Foundation Audio return this week, with another one by the prolific Parisian Remy Gallet aka Quasar bringing his deep vibes to the party on the Badlandz EP. As you would expect, it is a largely meditative affair, with the title track setting the theme nicely on the A side. A sparse and minimalist arrangement lets those fully expressive bass frequencies play centre stage, while 'Submersible' (much like the name suggests) is the closest thing we've ever heard that could be described as aquatic dubstep. On the flip, the booming dub antics of 'Laniakea' scream no more Mr Nice Guy, while the complex and layered riddims of 'Primal Instinct' close it out.

Stone Cold (4:20)

Sweet Doughs (3:37)
Review: Cartridge follows up releases on the likes of Encrypted, Locus Sound and Deep, Dark & Dangerous with this crisp collection on Subaltern. Three tracks deep, across the collection he flexes his muscles in all 140 directions; 'Stone Cold' hits with a broad sci-fi synth sweep over smoking 808s, 'Choker' is much more of a creeper that gradually rises and slices you down with its devilish bass textures while 'Sweet Doughs' takes us deep deep down in the trenches with its super roomy drum arrangement, long-lingering subs and a maze of eerie textures and harmonics over the top. Load up.

Art Is Dead (4:05)
Paramount (3:46)
Girl I Miss You (3:21)
My Love (4:54)
Review: Following the immense mini-album sized 'Carpe Noctem' in December and the massive 'Mourner VIP' last year, Johann Sorrow returns to Fent Plates once again with another collection of emotional, introspective slow garage jams. 'Art Is Dead' takes the lead with a surprisingly uplifting air about it before Sorrow rolls out every shade of feeling in its wake; 'Paramount' is a hard-hitting poignant track with bold swaggering kicks and layers of pads above, 'Girl I Miss You' looks west for inspiration as we're treated to a glimpse of Sorrow's hip-hop side before 'My Love' brings the EP together on a sublime, slow-house style 4x4 that's laced with heavy layers of chords, choral textures and an overall sense that maybe everything might actually be okay. Art is dead. Long live art.

Sakura (5:35)
Machine (4:41)
Sakura (TMSV remix) (4:44)
Review: Koichi Bamba brings his Dimness project back to Subotage Records for the first time in four years. Previously, the Japanese producer has delivered a trio of intoxicating, sub-heavy singles for the imprint, though the Sakura EP - his first ever vinyl outing - is unquestionably the best of the bunch. Particularly potent is the title track, a sub-heavy techno roller in which bleeping, reverb-laden electronic melodies, layered percussion and ghostly chords dance atop a heavy beat. TMSV delivers a wild, sleazy dubstep re-make that makes much of a frankly child-scaring wobble bassline, while bonus cut 'Machine' adds dark synth-string stabs and twinkling pianos to a hybrid UK funky/dubstep rhythm.
