Show Me (Sigma remix)
Show Me (Calibre remix)
Review: Many Zinc fans would love to see him back on a drum & bass tip. And while he's definitely shown more interest in the genre than he has for many years, he's still resolutely house proud... And smashing it, too, as proved by the unavoidable hammerations of "Show Me" throughout the summer. These D&B rubs, however, are a great consolation as Sigma and Calibre both deliver serious goods. The number-one smashing former exploit every nuance of the Zinc's bubbly bass, applying a breezy rolling groove to the blend for good measure. Calibre, meanwhile, strips the vibe back to include more space and soul within the groove. Classic Zinc, classic Calibre, classic Sigma. All parties stand up here.

International
Dimension (remix)
Review: One of the many highlights of their Brand New Machine album, "International" sees Chase & Status embracing their badboy roots with modern trappist motifs. Complete with sugar-sweet skanks and a cleverly diced Cutty Ranks sample, it can smash every dance in a 20 mile radius. Dimension's remix builds on the momentum with a slamming D&B version. Retaining the original elements while taking it deep into 2014 jungle territory, it justifies Dimensions hype in every possible direction. Massive.

Review: Ed Solo is broader than Broadway: a fact so well-known in the jungle fraternity, to mutter such a statement is akin to telling someone water is wet. Just in case you need reminding, here he takes the Barrington Levy classic and flips it into a super-skanked jungle jam that will guarantee rewinds on every single drop. Flip for further reload justice as Ed applies his technique to Eek-A-Mouse. The most distinctive voice reggae has ever given us, Mouse's nasal tones are the consummate fit to Solo's sonic stylings. Large, even by jungle cakes standards.

LSB - "Leave"
FD - "Ice 690"
Anile - "Depths"
Kid Drama - "What Used To Be"
Review: The Fourfit series from Soul:R gathers pace with a second release that is packed with label debuts as LSB, Anile, FD and Kid Drama all step up to deliver some high class productions for the contemporary drum and bass selectors. LSB commences proceedings on a soulful note with "Leave" and what follows offer another example of the label's diversity, with FD opting for a grittier approach on the dirty funker "Ice 690". Flip over and "Depths" finds Anile drawing the focus back on the soulful approach, though it's the taut groove and little Junglist edits that really impress with this production. Kid Drama ends matters on an undeniably blissful note with the abstract rhythmics of "What Used To Be".

Run Away
Somethin Heavy
Review: Does drum and bass get any better than this? Two of the finest names in the genre club together for "Run Away", met in the middle by the man like Fox who puts his vocal stylings into the mix. Rolling out smooth, it's that lulling bassline and softly-spoken chorus that takes the edge off punchy drums and signature Intalex-style strings from the pad section. Fans have been waiting for a release on this for some time now - finally, it's ownable. Showing that they can still deliver tastier goods for the dancefloor, "Something Heavy" is a funk-fuelled hips-mover with Fox sending out his raggamuffin sounds over down and dirty bass. You've heard it in the dance, now get it on repeat.

Break - "They're Wrong" (Calibre remix)
Break & DLR - "New Design"
Review: Bristol label Symmetry Records have decided to kick-start the New Year in requisite fashion with Symmetry Sessions vol 1, a digital collection featuring contributions from some of the top names in the scene. Label boss Break naturally features quite prominently on the six track release and Symmetry have decided to pull two highlights from the Sessions for this 12" sampler. Given that a remix of Break is a rare thing, it's no surprise that the highly prized Calibre relick of "They're Wrong" lines the A Side, rolling effortlessly towards the run out groove in a fashion that Calibre does so well. Face down and Break teams up with the gifted and blessed DLR for "New Design" which is a fine slab of dark tech step.

Still Passin
Review: You read it right - Jungle Cakes reaches its 28th instalment, this time led by the inimitable DJ Deekline. Catching up with the first track, "Alibaba" is a perfect jungle tune sampled from John Holt's reggae classic of the same name. Retro for the old heads but still vibing enough to lift the dancefloor up a level, this is something special. "Still Passin" is a fresh, more modern jungle approach featuring tons of flashy dancehall samples (and one from the charts a short way back - spot it) and breaks that just don't quit. Dust off your dancing shoes, this is gonna get messy.

Eschaton (feat Mc Drs)
Review: Drum & bass's most unique gentleman Calibre plunders his vaults to compile a new collection of unreleased gems through the ages. As you'd expect, the end result is a timeless assault of lush grooves, soulful sonics and sweet skippy riddims. From the soft jazz insistency of "Honey Dew" to the hollowed harrowed bass tones of "Bellamee" via the harder, rave-referencing "Sagan" and the deep bass gurgles and DRS's reggae-style vocals on "Eschaton", the only issue here is the fact Calibre hasn't released them sooner. Unarguably incredible.

Review: Must grip double pack action from the Keysound crew here as UK producer Sully graces us with his first full release in some three years. A guest appearance on the debut album from E.m.m.a. last year reminded us how good a button pusher Sully was, and the eight track Blue finds him shifting focus away from the 2-step and footwork inspired sounds of his debut LP Carrier in favour of some Junglist excursions. Sully's expertise at classic break-based "rollage and choppage" is on full display across seven cuts here with fellow Keysound artist Logos chipping in with a beatless vapour dub of the title track. There's a looseness and rawness to much of the music here that will immediately hook anyone who is partial to a bit of Amen-based fun and games.

Ivy Lab & Emperor - "Pepper" (Deft remix)
Review: Ivy Lab provides Critical Music with its first physical release of 2014 with a four-track double 12". To begin with there's the piano-ambient introduction of "Missing Persons", which in a way sounds like a highly sped-up Burial track combined with Frank Carter III's vocals full of a similar sounding soul heard in Storm Queen's crossover hit "Look Right Through". The drums remain super-quick on "Live On Your Smile" alongside warbled computer bleeps and melancholic female vocals, while "Sunday Crunk" is a hip hop-inspired, MPC-styled slow jam that may well take its inspirations from southern rap. Lastly on this deluxe package, Project: Mooncircle and 2nd Drop artist Deft touches-up Ivy Lab & Emperor's "Pepper" for something verging on heavy dubstep mixed with some growling, Fis-like effects.

Command Strange - "Rock Steady" (Lenzman remix)
REDS - "Meraki"
Review: A bona fide Dutch institution, Fokuz have repped the Netherlands in D&B since 1999. And they show no signs of stopping... This marks the start of six 12"s which will culminate in a massive double CD album later on this year. First up is current man-of-the-moment Lenzman who has found time during his album process to remix Command Strange's "Rock Steady". Twisting the emphasis on the pianos with a cool reverse technique that's complemented by arresting vocal samples, it's a case of true D&B beauty. Flip for Reds' "Meraki"; all flutes, keys and a sub bassline that seeps warmth and soul, it sums up the Fokuz spirit leaving no illusions to their clout, power and presence in the scene.

Shadow Boxing (Om Unit remix)
Shadow Boxing (re-mastered original mix)
Review: Classic alert! Doc Scott revisits his NHS alias for this very special release on 31. The minute you hear that dark, groaning, ultimately evil, bassline you're whisked straight back in the smoky mists of 1996 - even if you were there at the time or not. Still dropped heavily by DJs to this day, this remastered revisit comes with a storming contemporisation from the on-point Om Unit. Identifying the creative potential between the bassline and his trademark halfsteps, it's one of the best D&B modernisations you'll hear all year.

Remember Your Rootz
Freeze
Review: Yes! Dominic Angas returns with his first Dom & Roland transmission of 2014 and many will be glad to hear it contains the monumental exercise in Amen murder known as "Remember Your Roots". Slammed in the club by the likes of Goldie, Audio, Break, and Klute, there's been the usual online clamour for "Remember Your Roots" since it first appeared on the Metalheadz Rinse show in December. And rightly so, as it kicks like a farmyard full of mules wearing steel toe capped footwear, but amidst the Amen filled onslaught, rumbling bass lines and that staccato riff, it's Dom's implementation of classic samples that rams home where his roots are! Don't sleep in the B Side either as "Freeze" is every bit as potent a dancefloor cut, a classic arrangement of strings and breakbeats that's befitting of spinnage at the iconic Metalheadz residency at Blue Note.

Speak No Fish
Review: Commercial Suicide return to The Draft, last year's album from label boss Klute and treat one of it's many highlights to a masterclass in the soulful roller from Calibre. Wisely Dom Martin has chosen to retain the hushed vocals of North Carolina based Klose that made the original so breath taking, extending the track to upwards of seven minutes and bringing his usual calibre (sorry) of hypnotic beauty to the table. Complementing this, Klute comes through with a new twilight roller in the shape of "Speak No Fish" that is just as good! Blue vinyl too son.

Alive (Mefjus remix)
Review: The unstoppable Chase & Status release another emphatic slammer from their Brand New Machine album. With pummelling double kicks, soaring synths and soul stirring vocals from Jacob Banks, it's the duo at their most lighter-raising. Remix-wise Austrian man-of-the-moment Mefjus chews up every element and spits them back out with twisted neuro naughtiness. Serious nasty business - not to be missed.

Too Close
Too Close (VIP)
Review: The unstoppable Wilkinson returns with another chop-slapper from his Lazers Not Included debut album, "Too Close" is one of his most emotional tracks to date as Detour City's vocals surge across the soulful, swinging riddim. Breaking down into a rich organic funk break, it shows a whole new side to the Twickenham superstar. For added welly head for the VIP; with added drum power and more uplift in the bass, it's not dissimilar to High Contrast's best work. A showcase of subtle VIP science.

The Return Of...
Analogue Life
Review: Dave Simms and Dev Pandya's roving Nucleus & Paradox project has been running since the late '90s and featured on many of the great Drum & Bass labels in this time, including a 2005 drop for Metalheadz. Here they add the Metalheadz Platinum sublabel to the list with a two track stormer of the highest quality. "The Return Of..." is a classic example of Nucleus and Paradox's trademark break beats and sub bass approach, rolling out the Think break over a hefty rave bass line with an expertise that few can match. On the B Side "Analogue Life" offers a more restrained take on the pair's approach and it's a fairly menacing production to boot.

Dirty Love (feat Talay Riley - TC remix)
Review: Last year's Lasers Not Included album confirmed what many had suspected; Wilkinson is a bonafide star producer with the capacity to drive Drum N Bass back into the commercial force it once was. It's been a rapid rise for the South West Londoner who used to spend his days potting plants in Ronnie Wood's favourite garden centre and the foundations laid by his LP are expanded on with this new 12" for RAM. "Dirty Love" sees Wilkinson team up with silky voiced UK vocalist Talay Riley and it's a partnership that should be explored more as the former's production is the perfect accompaniment to the latter's killer vox. Flip over for a remix from TC that lovingly adds some dirt to proceedings.

Half Light (Audio remix)
Review: The man behind the highest charting D&B tune of 2013 returns with another potential top 10 slapper. "Half Light" follows the emotionally reflective post-rave sentiments of "Afterglow" with melodic majesty. Rushy, touching and delivered with synth-striking dynamism, it's got potential to cause festival and airwave meltdown this summer. And for those who demand a darker command, the mighty Audio has provided the ultimate remix complement; filthy, twisted and uncompromising, it's the perfect balance.

Review: S.P.Y's last album, the Drum&BassArena Award winning What The Future Holds, was outstanding and surged him to the very top of the D&B table where he's always belonged. Topping that was always going to be a challenge, but naturally he's delivered... And he's done so by going back underground and reminding us of the very stark, dynamic techniques that made drum & bass what it is. From the icy sheet metal muscle and Charlemagne's arresting quintessential D&B vocals on the title track right through to the gritty evils of "Rise Again", S.P.Y's studio command is second to none. An impeccable sophomore that refuses to compromise.

Zootie (Yavas mix)
Review: Rezzett may not be the most high profile name amongst the swelling discography of The Trilogy Tapes, but last year's self-titled 12? for Will Bankhead's label was arguably one of the imprint's highlights to date. The three tracks were a skewed combination of scratchy rhythms and frazzled melodies that took the description "lo-fi" to new places. It's up against some stiff competition but Zootie might be the finest looking TTT so far with numerous hand screen printed stamps adorning both the outer and inner sleeves. It's matched musically too as both "Zootie" and the accompanying "Yavas mix" applies Rezzett's blasted sonics and applies them to some wondrous ambient chords with the former throwing in some speaker blowing hardcore rhythms too.

Review: In today's climate, the term EP is surely one of the most misused by record labels; we've lost count of the number of two track 12"s that arrive at Juno HQ labelled as EPs in error by thems that don't know. Dutch drum and bass troupe Noisia are fully aware that it means Extended Play as this Purpose EP demonstrates with a full grip of some eight tracks slapped across four 12"s! Housed in a gatefold sleeve featuring artwork from Nik and Khomatech, Purpose features collaborations with contemporaries Phace, Prolix and Evol Intent. Noisia Fans will probably already have soaked up the viciously ill opening track "Oh Oh" and the remainder of the EP doesn't relent one bit with "Running Blind" a particular highlight.

Review: Blackout Music present the first of several vinyl samplers for Eat The Rich, the new album from New Zealand drum and bass troupe State Of Mind. Kicking over the fence between old school sounds and brand new ideas, they've taken inspiration from around the world and thrown it into one of the most accomplished D&B albums released in recent memory. This double pack lifts four cuts from the album with the Black Sun Empire and Perceive collaborations helping to push the State Of Mind sound even further into orbit. Each track is fresh but with a nod to the past that grounds it deep in D&B, making it worthy of the hall of fame.
