Review: In the world of Tone Dropout, the rave never stops. It's this wholehearted 90s-inspired retro-futurism that makes their compilation style EP releases such a good listen. This ninth volume in the series packs a punch, with highlights coming courtesy of The He-Men (the trippy acid-psychedelia of saucer-eyed early morning workout "A-Train"), the weighty Yorkshire bleep and bass-meets-Italian dream house warmth of Ascot and WW's "Marelli Bleeps", and the deliciously quirky hip-house-meets-breakbeat hardcore-meets-acid bustle of Bufo Bufo's "Ectotherm". Arguably best of all though is Dawl's sleazy, alien and off-kilter acid-electro rub "Human Experiments".

  4. El Sonido (No Vox) (4:39)
Review: Number 20 drops on Truncate and plunges us back into a world of chiseled, deadly serious techno. "Repeat" opens things up with some slowly modulating themes that teasingly evolve from veiled threat to clear and present danger. Luis Flores takes on a remix of the track that adds some industrial heft to the rhythm section and leaves a generous dose of white noise debris in its wake. "El Sonido" is a wound up jacker dreaming of peak time - a tight but swinging groove bringing the funk and end of the world interplay between the nervy synth line and the displaced vocal snippets. There's also a "No Vox" version of the track if that voice doesn't do it for you.

Review: Those who keep tabs on these things tell us that Andy Jones' first 12" as Makers Of Movement, 1997's "The Moving House E.P", now fetches silly money online. Seven Hills spotted this too, so have bundled a licensed reissue of that EP (record one of this essential double-pack) with a disc containing previously unreleased tunes recorded during the same period (1994-98). It's a great collection of overlooked UK techno all told, with highlights including the sub-heavy, Bleep-meets-futurist tech-house brilliance of "Make A Move", the pulsating, similarly Bleep-influenced thrust of "D-Cyfer" and the bombastic, up-and-at-'em bustle of "Sonoluminescence". In other words, it's packed to the rafters with timeless club cuts from one of the UK's lesser-known techno producers.

Review: Gavin Herlihy is a stalwart of 21st century tech house, with an impressive run of labels under his belt from Cadenza and Culprit to Crosstown Rebels and Leftroom. His Karousel alias pops up from time to time too, this time on Burnski's unrelenting Constant Sound label. "In Somnium" has a luxurious acidic rub to it thanks to the nagging monosynth bassline coursing throughout, but this rave-baiting trope is balanced out by airy pads and a sleek tech house beat. "Come Inside" is a more knotty affair, using all kinds of organic samples and a more detailed sound palette to whip up some dancefloor magic, and then "Angel" completes the set with a lighter, subtly off-kilter mood to greet the first rays of dawn.

Review: In recent times the Zenker Brothers seem to have spent more time running their inspired Ilian Tape imprint than they have producing music. While we'd hardly criticize their choices - Ilian Tape goes from strength to strength - it's certainly good to have them back. The Munich-based siblings begin their first outing of 2020 with the melodious, far-sighted electro shuffle of "Shaketown", before wrapping mangled, mind-altering electronic riffs around a crunchy techno groove of "Chi Boost". "Bengel Mode" sees the siblings successfully combine alien-sounding riffs with a denser techno rhythm track, while closing cut "Outside" is a sparkling trip into hypnotic, slow-release ambient techno territory with nary a kick-drum in sight.

Review: In 1995, The Advent - then a duo, now the solo project of founder member Cisco Ferreira - released debut album "Elements Of Life". Unlike some of the Advent material that followed, it wasn't all hard techno intensity, offering up just as much hard-wired electro futurism. New album "Life Cycles" doffs a cap to that set both in style and presentation, though it's all-electro approach is arguably more sonically similar to 2003's "Light Years Away". Ferreira's take on electro tends towards the tougher end of the spectrum, with weighty basslines and industrial-strength TR-808 drums being peppered with spacey sounds, bleeping melodies and foreboding acid lines. It's aggressive and dystopian rather than deep and melodic, keeping dancefloors in mind throughout. Crucially, it's also really good.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: Vigenere is creating a mysterious vibe with its obscure collaborative releases, but the music speaks for itself as it plots a course through deeper realms of the dance. After contributing to the first release, Malin Genie is back and seemingly flying solo for a more direct trip into dubby techno territory - that's certainly the vibe on opening immersion heater "Eschaton". "Drain" has a more tripped out minimal flavour with the after hours in mind, while "Venus" swaps moody atmospheres out for a hazy shuffler peppered with slices of warm instrumentation. "Elara" brings things full circle with another crooked dub-out to bring eyelids down heavy in a state of transcendental bliss.

Review: The latest release on Steve O'Sullivan's revitalised Bluetrain label offers up a trio of cuts from the archives. All were produced during the mid-to-late '90s period when O'Sullivan first launched the label and used the now familiar alias. The A-side features a superb, dub-fired "Alternate 1997 Mix" of O'Sullivan classic "Midnight Creeper" in which deep space electronics flutter away atop crunchy machine beats and a booming, sub-heavy bassline. Over on side B O'Sullivan is in collaborative mode, first joining forces with Ben Sims on the deep, warm and hypnotic techno pulse of "Where's Burt? (Extended Version)", before hooking with Wis on the sparse, dubbed-out peak-time brilliance of "Echo Freak (No Lightweight Stuff Edit)".

Review: Electro titan Zeta Reticula, otherwise known as Slovenian hero Umek, is back with another salvo of heavy-hitting belters for your bag. "Digital Card" is a highly strung workout loaded with searing lead lines to stir up all kinds of intense emotions, which Exzakt and BFX rework into a bleep laden, low-blowing machine funk fest. "Endless Clue" finds Reticula amping up the dystopian theatrics even harder, while "Message In Code" takes a leaner approach with a mean tempered low-end synth and some gnarly acid to get you freakin' in all the right ways.

Review: NTHNG's debut album "It Never Ends" impressed on its 2017 release, with both buyers and critics warming to the former Mork and Delsin producer's personal blend of ambient, deep techno and dub techno sounds. Eight-track follow-up "Hypnotherapy" is, if anything, even better. It explores relatively similar sonic pastures, with even more up-tempo and dancefloor-focused tracks (for example the trance-inducing throb of "Heitt", the spoken word-sporting deep hypnotism of "I Just Am", fizzing "Wave Return" and the glassy-eyed "Spirit Of Ecstasy") coming cloaked in rich, ear-pleasing chords and languid melodies. The album's downtempo and ambient excursions are superb, too, especially Pete Namlook-esque closing cut "With You" and the slowly shifting "Beautiful Love".

Review: After five years of on-off collaborations and side projects, Aaron 'FIT' Siegel has finally got round to making a new solo record. It's rather good, with startling A-side "Exist On" delivering a brilliant blend of breakbeat-driven turn of the '90s grooves, chunky bass, ultra-dreamy chords and the kind of bleeping top-end melodies more readily associated with the early releases of Warp Records. Title track "Formula" moves even further towards bleep techno territory via deep space chords, thumping techno beats, Kraftwerkian lead lines and the kind of distorted analogue bass found on LIES releases, while "Wayne County Stomp" sounds like a mutated, mind-altering cover of Steve Poindexter's "Computer Madness".

Now she returns to Steel City Dance Discs, the Australian label that provided her first break back in 2018, with a new EP, with some rabble rousing rave busters that span styles, gleefully cherry picking the feistiest ingredients to make surefire bangers. "All New Low" is particularly fierce with its massive monosynth bassline grind and ear-snagging sample hooks. Elsewhere there's plenty of electro punishment waiting - don't sleep on B2 belter "Little Monsters" in that regard.

Review: This may only be his third EP, but already Rove Ranger is looking like a techno titan in the making. There's something unnaturally heavy - and that's a good thing - about the track that opens his new EP on Ten Pills Mate, "If You Say So". Loopy, jacking and insatiably bass-heavy, it consists of little more than a spacey, two-note melody over the most thunderous of techno grooves. This weight and intensity continues on the slower, groovier throb of "Rave Memories", where warehouse-ready riffs occasionally break the kick-drum driven grooves. Elsewhere, "Introspective" is a more melodious - but also strangely panic-inducing - chunk of mid-tempo techno, while closing cut "You Want Both So I Gave You Both" sounds like Joey Beltram's bleep-era Mental Mayhem project.

So, while "Perspectives", his eighth album, has the hazy, half-light pulse of dub techno at its heart, the rhythms are a little bolder, the accompanying electronics more colourful, the melodies jazzier, and the variety of tracks a little wider. Review: Last year Nacho Varela and Cruz Vittor debuted on All Day I Dream via "Have A Name", a warm and melodious chunk of deep house/tech-house fusion that ended up on the label's excellent "Summer Sampler" compilation. This single is therefore their debut "proper", with the similarly inclined titled track "Underworld" - all wavy male vocals, crispy tech house beats, gorgeous chords and summer breeze melodies - being accompanied by two remixes and even more picturesque and string-drenched bonus cut "Naturae". The reworks come courtesy of labelmate Lost Desert, who beefs up the beats and gives the track a more enveloping feel, and Volen Sertin. That version is bigger, beefier and a little bolder, too, with echoing percussion hits and even toastier musical elements riding a chunky house groove.

Review: Colin McGraw's MDA Analog project continues to enjoy a renaissance after more than 20 years of silence, serving up the third instalment of vintage techno with a house-spirited warmth. "Lost But Not Broken" capitalises on some particularly soaring synths to create a uniquely uplifting flavour, while "A Theory Of Everything" takes things deeper with dubby pulses underneath an ear-snagging set of keys. "Mimico Creek" has a particularly playful arrangement marked out by nimble arps and bleeps, and "Scavenger Hunt" completes the set with a punchy rhythm section and yet more plush layers of harmonic interplay.

They come from deep within the vaults on some old DATs as unearthed by Gosub and he opens things up with the icy and glistening electro fizzer, "Static Stabs." He also offers up "Love Balls", which is a more pensive and spacious deep electro cut with lush chords draped over slippery beats. Elsewhere there is the freaky late night funk of Diablo Source's "In Your Soul" and retro tinged "Automatic Voice" helping to make this a timeless traversing of these futurist styles.

As opening track "Scalar" shows, this is Vril in full-on confrontational mode, slamming down heavyweight rave stabs and noisy drum blasts with a sound that goes beyond big room techno to something experimental in its sheer impact. The pressure remains high on "Biohak", and remains malevolent if a little more stripped down on the deadly jack of "Verkunstungstraktat". Notes of EBM and industrial lurk behind this double pack 12", but really it's just bruising modern techno with an artful twist, which seems to be the Bad Manners M.O. - one we can all get behind.

Review: Die Orakel's superb "0114 Series" - a trilogy of 12" singles from Frankfurt artists paying tribute to the turn-of-the-90s Bleep & Bass sound of the Steel City - concludes via a suitably bass-heavy four-tracker from Koga. It's not pure Yorkshire bleep by any means, but the untitled tracks certainly include many knowing nods to the style (think deep and weighty sub-bass, alien electronics and an intoxicating, sci-fi fired late-night mood. Interestingly, Koga's extensive use of breakbeats throughout is perhaps closer in tone to the "Bleep and Breaks" sound that sprung up in London from early 1990 onwards, though the boldness of the bass is thoroughly in keeping with the aesthetics of Warp's early Rob Gordon-mastered releases. Either way, all four cuts are superb, whether or not you're a bleep aficionado.
