Toomy Disco - "What Goes Around"
The Glue - "Without You"
South West Seven - "What Have I Got To Do?"
Aeromaschine - "Deep Champagne"
Review: The moustached disco avengers at Sccucci Manucci drop their latest missive, featuring more transmissions from the disco underground. Argentinean based Toomy Disco provides "What Goes Around", a tightly produced disco-house number with horn snippets woven around low-slung grooves, whilst The Glue deliver "Without You" a hazy slo-mo looper with vocal teases and hypnotic guitar licks. On the flip, South West Seven lock themselves into a fast moving groove with "What Have I Got To Do", a track that contrasts its fast rhythmic pulse with vocals and guitars that slowly emerge from the filtered ether. Aeromaschine close proceedings with "Deep Champagne"; combining a deep and melodic bassline with improvisational touches and glitchy vocal stutters, it successfully forges its own sound whilst keeping in line with his disco counterparts.

Hefty Done Me Right
The Electric Model
One Night In Puzon
Hefty Done Me Right (Tad Wily dub cut)
Review: Jay Shepheard's Retrofit imprint reaches its seventh release with this fine EP of old school sounds with an undeniably modern feel. "Hefty Done Me Right" begins proceedings with a house-disco hybrid sporting a particularly meaty analogue bassline, 80s electro vocal samples and shimmering pop synths, while "The Electric Model" marries a distinctly Kraftwerk-esque motorik vibe with Balearic disco sweeps and horns. On the flip, "One Night In Puzon" opens with a tense rising string line, broken with a crystalline piano mosaic and deep squelching bass. Finally, TW closes proceedings with his own dub take on "Hefty Done Me Right", amping up the electro feel of the original with an MPC cut-up style reworking filled with heavy vocal samples and rolling piano stabs, transplanting the original from its Italian roots to 80s Harlem.

Inspector Norse (6:40)
Myggsommer (3:23)
Swing Star (part 1) (4:19)
Swing Star (part 2) (6:44)
Review: Given that Todd Terje's first original material in some five years resulted in one of last year's highlights with the Running Back released Ragysh, it's natural he would want to leave some space before following up. The first of a series of EPs crafted from using one bit of vintage gear in particular, It's The Arps sees Terje dabble with the intricacies of the Arp 2600 analogue synthesizer as well as pay homage to his favourite Monty Python sketch. This is just as nerdy as you'd expect from a man who recently launched a website with the specific intention of exploring the obsessive studio nature of his contemporaries. The aforementioned "Inspector Norse" is an obvious highlight here, slowly unfurling gorgeous layers of playful synthesis that grapple the simplistic drums with flirtatious delight. Naturally for someone who spends most weekends of the year in a nightclub, Terje demonstrates a real prowess for building up the track, teasing your senses once before unleashing the mid point monstrous moment. It makes for another signature track from Terje which is likely to engender a rapturous reception for many years to come. Alongside it, "Myggsommer" provides a brief, twee interlude into oddball sci fi soundscapes which again prove to highlight the Arp 2600's capacity for inventive and idiosyncratic sounds. From here Terje unveils a two part skywards saunter through "Swing Star" showcasing a more dextrous manipulation of the Arp 2600's melodies across the markedly more rhythmic upbeat first part and expansive luxurious cosmic subsequent endeavour. Whilst "Inspector Norse" is guaranteed to be the one track from this release you will hear in the international discotheques, the remainder of It's The Arps serves as a excellent reminder of Terje's ever growing talent as a producer.

Spinach Life
Review: With label darlings Tiger & Woods invested in a heavyweight tour schedule over the past few months, it's no surprise that all has been quiet on the Editainment front of late. Hooray then as Pop & Eye return to the fore on their second EP for Editainment, displaying all the verve for expertly chopped and heavily processed variants on music's past that we've come to expect from the label and its many (or should that be few) contributors. As ever, the true record diggers alone will recognise what's been pulled apart and put back together with floor devastating aplomb, whilst the rest of you can marvel in how effective the four tracks are - "Spinach Life" in particular is delightful.

Todd Terje - "Snooze 4 Love" (version)
Son Of Sam - "Nature Makes A Mistake" (Jack Plug Supernatural dub)
Review: 2011 was a pretty special year for Gerd Janson's imperious Running Back imprint and they open proceedings on the next annual chapter with two cuts from their digital archives on this killer Digital Dubplates 10". The A Side houses an absolutely sublime version of Todd Terje's "Snooze 4 Luv" from the magnificent Ragysh EP, further exposing the sumptuous horizontal qualities with aplomb. Providing some nice contrast is an equally refined remix of Son of Sam's "Nature Makes A Mistake" from Jack Plug. The reissue of this 1984 industrially charged oddity was our favourite Running Back release of last year, and the chance to grasp a physical copy of Plug's effort (which is superior to the more highly lauded Ame remix) should not be passed up. Running Back also win the prize for first great runout groove inscriptions of 2012.

HNT
A Bicyclette
Piano In Paradiso
You Dance So Well
Review: The esteemed Les Edits Du Golem imprint resurfaces in style after an absence of several years with four refined oddities from the excellent I:Cube. Following swiftly from the veteran producer's stunning Lucifer En Discotheque 12" for Versatile, it's clear I:Cube has begun the New Year with panache. Proceedings open with the vaguely sinister slo-mo house of "HNT", all dramatic synth infractions and Cocker style hushed vocals over a strident rhythmic bump, which is complemented by the equally laidback sleaze that is "A Bicyclette". Those seeking more uptempo thrills will be satisfied with the infectious 90s Italian house stylings of "Piano In Paradise", which takes a pleasantly dark twist mid way through. "You Dance So Well" is reminiscent of the kind of oddball track you might find on those excellent A Few Things From Ivan Smagghe CDs and will delight those who prefer their music to be on the weird side.

World Unknown (Jacques Renault edit)
In The Jungle (Jacques Renault edit)
Bah Bah Jazz (Jacques Renault edit)
Review: NYC disco deity Jacques Renault has graced many fine imprints - Public Release, RVNG and his own On The Prowl label to name but three - and here he joins KZA's impressive Let's Get Lost edits stable inhabited by the likes of JD Twitch and Welcome Stranger. The big one here is A-Side "World Unknown", a heaving slice of visceral house formed around thumping drums and a vocal refrain that worms it way into your head and doesn't leave for some time. Pop this in your collection of peak-time party records and thank us later. The B-Side is made up of the shuffling deep house-disco crossover of "In The Jungle" and the positively delicious "Bah Bah Jazz": forget low frequencies, this one's all about those skittering hats! Raw, rough and ready from start to finish - highly recommended.

I'm Dancer
Needs Ending
Review: *** REPRESS *** Following some weeks after the usual drip of 'blink and you've already missed them' Golf Channel promo copies comes the finished version of the latest Try To Find Me output. Nicknamed the Justin Vandervolgen Hit Factory at the Juno Offices, this release sees the producer once again proving his record collection is matched by a deft touch when it comes to the edit. Vandervolgen offers up contrasting ends of the modern discoteque spectrum with Side A's "I'm Dancer" a muscular flex of EBM and proto house with a punishing kick drum rhythm attacked from all corners by heavily funked guitar, devilishly devious arpeggiated bass and a proper 80s male vocal hook. On the flip "Needs Ending" provides overdue satisfaction for all those who heard Phil South drop the track at Electric Elephant last year, with the TBD man does wondrous looping things to a chugging 80s electro disco oddity - just wait for that vocal to drop! Mad limited and mad brilliant as usual!

Moullinex & Peaches - "Maniac"
Telonius & Peaches - "Our Love" (extended vocal mix)
Munk & Peaches - "You Can't Run From My Love"
The Phenomenal Handclap Band & Peaches - "Walk The Night"
Review: For reasons not made clear, the esteemed Gomma label collared Peaches and decided to record some cover versions of tracks from the back catalogue of the iconic Casablanca Records label. Purists might sneer at the mere idea of this concept but the end products are undeniably fun (and its refreshing to hear Ms Nisker actually sing as opposed to, you know, act like Peaches). Moullineux step up first with a burning punk funk rendition of Flashdance's "Maniac", whilst Telonius' take on Donna Summer's "Our Love" gets bonus points for having Mr Harold Faltemeyer on keys! On the flip, Munk brings a chunk of disco funk to the Stephanie Mills classic "You Can't Run From My Love" whilst the ever excellent Phenomenal Handclap Band embellish the Halloween standard "Walk The Night" with their own distinct brand of loose limbed funk.

Luv & Happiness (Ron Hardy edit)
Flamethrower (Ron Hardy edit)
Tearin Down The Walls
Review: The RDY series of archival material from Ron Hardy's clearly sizeable collection of Music Box ready edits reaches its seventh edition sporting a delightfully dusty take on the classic soul classic "Love & Happiness". Recently covered to great effect by Legowelt under his House Of Jezebel moniker for Rush Hour, Hardy's uncovered re-edit matches Wolfers in the potency stakes though it's even more notable for deftly switching between vocals from the Al Green and First Choice versions. Flipside and there's a funked up version of "Flamethrower" from Massachusetts blues rock troupe The J Geils Band which really works the moog solo, whilst there's another Hardy rarity to end proceedings with a smudgy take on Streetlife's "Tearin Down the Walls".

Mania Theme
Mania Theme (Andrew Weatherall remix)
Mania Theme (Toby Tobias remix)
Pacific Coatal Highway (Hardway Brothers reconstruction)
Review: Coyote's long running Is It Balearic imprint score perhaps their finest release to date with this twelve inch from Hardway Brothers that figuratively throbs away at the stylus. We've been quite the fans of Hardway Brothers since they surfaced on History Clock with some unhinged proto house business towards the tail end of 2010, and it's clear that Sean Hardway's ongoing sting alongside Mr Weatherall at their sub 122bpm A Love from Outer Space parties is having just the right sort of effect on their productions. "Mania Theme" crawls into action, driven by gurgling analogues and twisting metallic rhythms, accruing laser guided synth lines and rasping percussion along the way as the track builds towards the most angelic of mid way luv'd up moments before falling foul to gravity and starting its descent again. There could be few ways to possibly improve upon the track, and a well chosen Andy Weatherall remix is one of them, aligning the track to his recent lineage of mind bogglingly good rockabilly aesthetics applied to a discotheque template. The moment where a humongous organ arises through the mist will surely remain one of this year's highlights on wax. It's might be considered thankless task trying to match such a remix, but Toby Tobias' widescreen jackers version on the flip gives the track a different context that is just as rewarding!

Nebula Sphynx
Parascopic Rope
Review: And so the second release on Tim Sweeney's Beats In Space imprint arrives and, as you'd imagine for someone whose radio show runs the gamut of the electronic spectrum, it would be disingenuous to refer to this as mere "disco". Secret Circuit is just one of many musical aliases adopted by Eddie Ruscha - most commonly known for his work alongside Thomas Bullock as The Laughing Light of Plenty. To date material under the Secret Circuit name has been either self released curios or cassette tapes for the Teenage Teardrops label. Just the sort of thing that would appeal to a lover of lesser known music such as Sweeney then, and Nebula Sphynx is a double dose of off-centre dancefloor brilliance that deserves to reach a wider audience. If you could imagine the prospect of Gavin Russom tackling some vintage Chicken Lips analogue experiments, then your mind might be willing and capable of fully grasping the excellence of the title track. Complementing this is "Parascopic Rope" which joyously threatens to explode under the pressure of it's over abundance of fizzing sonics and richly colourful textures. Special mention too for the artwork which comes courtesy of graphic novelist Christopher Forgues and complements the WWFG design perfectly.

E=MC2 (No More Klein & MBO remix)
Review: Back on its original release, Munich man Moroder's E=MC2 was marketed as the first album to be recorded entirely digitally. Here, the largely forgotten title track gets another airing thanks a bunch of new remixes from European disco producers new and old. Alexander Robotnik leads the charge with a version that evokes memories of his classic early 80s material, while ILS gleefully fuses classic Italo sounds with contemporary house rhythms. The odd but attractive No More Klein & MBO version sounds like a mash-up between "E=MC2" and "Dirty Talk", whilst Rodion lays down some contemporary electro-disco with just enough cheeky analogue bump. As if that wasn't enough, there's also a chiming, retro-futurist rework from Baldelli and Dionigi.

Back Together (original mix part 2 - Chris Bangs 45 edit)
Review: Launched in 2007 and run by Andy Davies, Street Soul is one of the UK's best specialist labels focusing on putting out releases warmly welcomed by the soul fraternity. Here the label get Chris Bangs (a legendary and inspirational figure in the British underground black dance scene since the 1980s) to make two special 45 edits taken from a soulful house anthem from Dutch producers Hardsoul featuring legendary US vocalist Ron Carroll. It's a smooth and well produced affair with distinct chords, live bass and repetitive handclaps, with Ron's soaring vocals driving the catchy melody home in fine fashion.

Shopping Cart (Maxxi Soundsystem remix)
Review: Numbering musicians from LA, Copenhagen and Auckland amongst their ranks, Parallel Dance Ensemble perhaps epitomise the far reaching remit of Permanent Vacation. Debuting on the Munich label with the digital-only Possessions & Obsessions last March, the band will have slipped under the radar of the vinyl buying cognoscenti. Matters are amended somewhat by this twelve inch that sees a typically well curated selection of artists remix tracks from that EP. Any record that puts the likes of Max D and Maxxi Soundsystem alongside a rarely used collaboration moniker between Studio Barnhus' Boman and Petter (Salax Peep Show) and the Perm Vac mainstays Spectacle is going to get the disco whiskers twitching and your intrigue will be well rewarded here. It's rare that a production from Future Times artist Max D gets trumped in our affections but the moment the bass line drops on the Maxxi Soundsystem remix of "Shopping Cart" is a real joy to behold!
