  1. Viajecito (5:13)
  2. Too Late (3:05)
Review: For a brief period between 1968 and 1975, Peruvian band Black Sugar recorded some seriously heavy fusions of soul, rock and jazz. It's because of this that both of their self-titled albums now exchange hands for eye-watering sums online, as does their 1971 debut single "Viajecito". Helpfully, Matasuna Records has done a deal to reissue the latter. The track itself remains a rare treat; a gloriously sunny, horn-heavy fusion of Latin jazz rhythms, spacey sounds, jaunty group vocals and twinkling pianos. B-side "Too Late", a sumptuous, boogaloo-sounding soul number in which the group sings in English over a Blackbyrds-esque backing track, is similarly impressive.

  2. Baiana (Wolf Mueller Drum Drop) (5:03)
Review: Barbatuques, a well known Brazilian group of body percussionists, originally recorded "Baiana" back in 2005 - which became a staple of their concerts. It is now issued on vinyl for the first time, marking the second volume of Brasingles: a new series on Selva Discos dedicated to releasing 'loud' 12" singles. On the first side, the original is a modern folk song from Bahia composed by Maria do Carmo Barbosa, and featuring a wild mouth harp sound with a stomping Barbatuques' arrangement that imprinted its trademark sound. German producer Jan Schulte (aka Wolf Mueller/Bufiman) heard the song and decided remix it to use in his DJ sets - adding more drums to brilliant effect.

  1. Kalimba (Calypso edit) (4:59)
Review: This limited edition, single-sided salvo sees Fly By Night boss Lorenzo Bandeira edit up a mid-'80s chunk of smooth jazz Balearica by American saxophonist Bob Berg. Bandeira wisely jettisons all of the cheesier elements of Berg's original version. Instead, he focuses on the track's rubbery tropical rhythms, calypso-inspired synthesized kalimba melodies, Berg's deliciously dreamy chord sequences and the undeniably glassy-eyed sense of sunrise-inspired release. He's also added some well-placed dub delays here and there, too, transforming the track into the kind of loved-up tropical chugger that probably sounds awesome while watching the sun go down. Bravo Sir!

  1. Ofel I (4:11)
  2. Breathe (3:59)
Review: "Ofel I" marks the belated return to action of 13-piece Afrobeat ensemble Hoodna Orchestra, whose previous release - the hot-to-trot "Alem", made in cahoots with Ethiopian guest musicians - dropped way back in September 2017. The headline attraction is undoubtedly A-side "Ofel I", a low-slung chunk of horn-heavy '60s psych goodness that sounds like it could have been plucked from the soundtrack to a particularly trippy and experimental British spy movie. There's a similar feel to the admittedly more exotic B-side "Breathe", a killer cut that appears to have been inspired - in part, at least - by dusty Turkish psych-funk.

  1. Vocalize My Luv (3:35)
  2. Ki'igba (3:46)
Review: Over the course of his lengthy career, Jimi Tenor has proved to be something of a musical chameleon, variously portraying himself as a lo-fi lounge music lothario, flute-sporting jazzman, Moog-loving electronic adventurer, dub-wise explorer and, most recently, Afrobeat eccentric. On "Vocalize My Luv", he fuses a number of his musical obsessions, by serving up a jaunty and righteous chunk of Ghanaian highlife futurism rich in dancehall-influenced drum machine beats, jammed-out Korg riffs and amiable female vocals. It's ace, and comes with a similarly sterling B-side, "Ki'igba". This shuffling affair sees Tenor reach for his trusty flute and get all jazzy over a dusty and laidback Afrobeat groove.

  2. Saludos Desde Oakland (3:59)
Review: El Mero Guero Sonidero is a fairly well known DJ on the Californian cumbia underground, though this seems to be the Bay Area resident's debut single release. As with many cuts on Discos Mas, "Cumbia Chulita" offers a suitably 21st century take on the Colombian genre, with traditional elements - accordions, vocals, hand percussion - sitting side by side with hip-hop vocal samples, intergalactic synth lines, heavy sub bass and shuffling drum machine beats. His love of dub delays, wild synthesizer lines and spoken vocals comes to the fore on spaced-out B-side "Saludos Desde Oakland", which is pretty out there despite the presence of a relentless cumbia riddim.

Review: All hail the Prince Of Queens, a futurist fusionist with a passion for joining the dots between numerous aspects of NYC's "trans-Caribbean culture clash". In practice, that means melding elements borrowed from traditional Caribbean and Central American styles with beats, basslines and aural tics more associated with contemporary electronic music culture. For example, some may hear hints of Detroit techno futurism amongst the blissful synthesizer melodies, stabbing UK funky bass and electronic Cumbia rhythms of "Se Va Se Va", while "Tropical Past and Future" is a rush-inducing electronic workout forged around the kind of insatiable rhythms that are all the rage in Central America. In other words, it's a wonderfully melodious, dancefloor-friendly and imaginative collection of cuts that willfully sidesteps stylistic conventions.

Review: By the time he released the career-defining "Toquinho" in 1970, guitarist Antonio Pecci Filho was already a rising star in his native Brazil. Propelled forwards by cheery hit single "Que Maravilha" - a samba-soaked collaboration with fellow South American star Jorge Ben - the eponymous LP made "Toquinho" a massive star in his home country. As this reissue proves, the album has aged brilliantly. It features a fine mix of laidback instrumentals, shuffling samba songs (see the ace "Zana"), folksy excursions and cuts that later provided samples for some of dance music's best-loved tracks (most notably "Carolina Carol Bela", which was sampled by DJ Marky on his breakthrough hit "LK"). The kind of album that everyone should have in their record collection.

Review: Ghanaian disco-funk stalwart Sidiku Buari initially broke through in his native country in 1975. Although it was his eponymous debut album that cemented his star status, it was the single that preceded the set, "Karam Bani", that established his reputation. Here it gets a deserved reissue, complete with original B-side "Ye Koaba". The title track is something of a beast: a driving, funk-fuelled work out rich in jammed-out electric piano lines, sweaty drums and soaring, life-affirming vocals. "Ye Koaba", meanwhile, is a little breezier and jolly in tone, but no less essential.

Review: For the uninitiated, Tonada Baile Cantado is a collaborative project helmed by members of the Brooklyn-based Bulla en el Barrio, a fluid collective of young musicians dedicated to making new music in the Colombian "Bullerengue" style. This is volume two in an ongoing series of releases and is every bit as vibrant as its predecessor. First up is "Papa Lopez", where chanted, Afro-influenced female vocals rise above a dense and percussive groove. This is quickly followed by the up-beat thrust of the similarly inclined "Vamos Pa Venecia" and B-side opener "La Hamaca", where brilliant vocal harmonies dance over another insatiable hand percussion groove. Closing cut "La Suerte", meanwhile, may well be the best of the bunch; it's certainly the heaviest.

Review: For their latest deep dive into forgotten and sought-after African music, Mr Bongo has secured the rights to reissue Togolese singer Akofa Akoussah's eponymous 1976 debut album. Akoussah was already something of a scene veteran when she recorded the set for Paris-based Sonafric, having made her vinyl debut in Togo 11 years earlier. The set remains something of a classic, with Akoussah variously delivering sweet vocals over local rhythms and guitars, bass, horns and Moog synth parts that showcase her Western funk and soul influences. There are some suitably heavy dancefloor workouts throughout (not least superb opener "Tango") as well as more laidback and stripped-back cuts. Curiously, the echo-laden production makes it sound like it was recorded in the mid '60s rather than the 1970s, but that's no criticism; it just adds an extra edge of intoxicating fuzziness.

Review: German imprint Pingipung has been doing a great job in re-introducing the world to the music of Umeko Ando, a Japanese folk singer who spent decades championing her native Ainu culture before passing away in 2004. Pingipung has already reissued her rare debut album, 2000's "Ihunke", and here gives a deserved first single release to that set's closing track, "Atuy So Kata". Her beautiful and haunting original version - all handclaps, traditional instrumentation and her sublime vocals - nestles on the A-side, with Patric Catani's remix on the flip. His version is drowsy, foreboding and fuzzy, with the remixer expertly mixing Ando's vocals and instrumentation with crunchy electronic drums, psych-rock guitars and all manner of out-there noises.
