Review: In the expansive sleeve notes accompanying this superb triple-album, Analog Africa founder Samy Ben Redjeb accounts, in great detail, the epic tale of Dur-Dur Band, a Mogadishu-based deep funk outfit that took Somalian radio by storm during the early 1980s. It's a remarkable story, all told, but nowhere near as remarkable as the music contained on this essential retrospective. Redjeb has managed to license both of their previously cassette-only albums, stretching them across three slabs of wax. Brilliantly played and performed, the songs mix killer American and African style funk grooves with hooky Somalian vocals, spacey synths and occasional nods towards other styles (most notably reggae on later period cut "Diinleeya" and Juju on "Salkuu Dhigey"). Simply essential.

Review: Produced and sleeked out at Opal Studios in NYC, back in 1975, Buari's self-titled LP has been a cornerstone of international highlife music since it was first released. The original is now an arduous item to find at a decent price, so we thanks the Be With label for having repackaged an essential Afro LP that is a must have for anyone into anything outside a constant beat drum. "Karam Bani" opens with a forceful helping of funk, percussive to to the max, and this same hypnotic groove formula is present across the entirety of the A-side, making this a sampler's dream come true. On the flip, "Iro Le Pa" is the stand-out tune for us, a rhythm that makes Theo Parrish's Ugly Edits seems kinda tame! Recommended.

Review: You've probably never heard of Dizzy K unless you're a highlife or African boogie freak but, that's OK, because he is another one of Nigeria's forgotten legends from the 1980s. The decade paved the way for many Nigerian and Ghanaian producers to add their own kind of flex to electornic disco music, and Dizzy K's output, along with the likes of William Onyeabor, was among the very best of that era. His handful of LPs now go for mortgage prices on the second-hand market, so it really took a label like Sticky Buttons to compile the man's best tunes under one compilation. We love this kind of thing and, not to hype it up or anything, but we expect this to explode as much as Onyeabor's sound. Every track on here is a keeper, from the opening "Excuse Me Baby" - an instantly seductive groove - through to "Yes, I Love You". In essence, it is the purest, rawest, most down to earth funk-boogie that you'll get from us this week. Hotly recommended!

Review: Edinburgh is perhaps not the place you'd look for authentic 1950s and '60s style New York salsa, but that's exactly where Grupo Magnetico earned their stripes. The collective regularly performed in a small cellar bar before cutting their first record, which was released last year by Athens of the North. This debut album, which boasts contributions from singers and musicians from across South and North America and was mixed in New York by legendary Latin producer Aaron Levinson, expands on that single, offering a wonderfully authentic tribute to the glory days of Eddie Pamieri, Tito Puente, Ray Barretto, classic NYC salsa and the infamous Fania label.

Review: Ostinato Records is still in its infancy but the label has well and truly impressed us since they first launched last year. That initial string of reissue material from Cape Verde was sensational to say the least, and we're doubly impressed to see that the label heads have now sprawled out to Sudan, a corner of Africa that is comparatively less known in terms of music. With 16 tunes that have been selected for this essential double album, there is so much to explore and take in, especially given that this music is not something to be consumed superficially; let's the rhythms take you, revel in them, learn your surroundings. This is you being launched in Sudan. Hotly tipped!

  1. Por La Vida (4:21)
  2. Miri (3:55)
Review: According to the South American fusionists who run Names You Can Trust, Buyepongo is one of the leading lights on the Los Angeles "tropical underground", a scene known for fusing traditional rhythms and instrumentation with more streetwise contemporary influences. The two cuts showcased here were recorded in an analog-rich New York studio, and are apparently particularly popular with the group's Los Angeles fans. A-side "Por La Vida" is a real killer - a jaunty, dub-fuelled Cumbia outing rich in dancing accordion lines and Tito Puente style percussion. Flipside "Miri" is way more tropical in tone, doffing a cap towards the Caribbean and low-slung 1960s psychedelia whilst remaining close to the band's South American roots.

Review: It would be fair to say that the Afro-Cuban All Stars are Cuba's most important contemporary musicians. Their leader, Juan de Marcos Gonzalez, has been a pioneering figure for decades and his work with the likes of the Buena Vista Social Club has officially solidified his position as the guiding voice of Afro-Latin music. World Circuit has decided to reissue the band's debut album from 1997, A Toda Cuba Le Gusta, and it's no surprise given just how iconic it remains to this day. If you're a fan of rhythmic jazz with a Caribbean twist then this is the right material for you. If you're a record collector whose into the spicier end of the jazz scale then this is unmissable. Whoever youre, you're bound to enjoy this marvelous collection of tracks.

Review: Hot Casa's latest deep dive into the Afro-funk archives takes us to the Democratic Republic of Congo at the turn of the 1970s. It was here, in a nation brimming with post-independence confidence, that a funk band called The Soul Kids briefly burned brightly. This reissue of their impossible to find debut album should be essential listening for anyone interested in West African funk. It contains a mixture of sizzling self-penned instrumentals and inspired cover versions of American funk standards, including a memorable take on Wilson Pickett's cover of Beatles classic "Hey Jude" and two fantastic versions of James Brown's "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag".

Review: There's rather a lot of mystery surrounding Fortuna Records latest release, which comes from a previously unheard (and decidedly publicity-shy) producer known only as Moontribe. The album itself is intense and otherworldly, with the mystery man or woman dousing heavy African tribal rythms with intoxicating Middle Eastern instrumentation, off-kilter organ lines, mind-altering Jew's Harp motifs and copious amounts of 1970s style type echo. The resultant cuts veering from dense, percussive workouts (wild opener "Moontribe") and jaunty, intergalactic jams ("Technology", "Bottles"), to deep space soundscapes ("Moon's Moon"). It's very impressive and immersive stuff, all told.

Review: It's a while since we heard from contemporary cumbia stars Frente Cumbiero, who found fame earlier in the decade with a string of singles and an album length dub revision of their work by British soundsystem hero Mad Professor. They kick of their first single in six years with "Sondirama", a jaunty and restless affair rich in rasping horn lines, mazy 1970s Moog synthesizer sounds, lilting Latin trumpet, incessant organ stabs and the band's omnipresent Colombian style beats. It's rather good, all told, as is the rather more eccentric B-side, "Crema Mental", which sees them pepper a dense, off-kilter tropical rhythm with tango style accordions, trip-inducing synthesizer solos and marching brass stabs.

Review: Azymuth's 1977 set "Aguia Nao Come Mosca" finally gets the reissue treatment, some 24 years after its last vinyl pressing. It was one of the albums on which the legendary Brazilian jazz-funk/fusion outfit forged their impressive reputation, and remains a wonderfully sun-kissed blend of languid electric piano solos, jaunty samba guitars, rich jazz-funk bass, starry synthesizer chords and bustling drums. While the (then) trio have made plenty of other fine albums over the years - 1979's "Jazz Carnival"-sporting "Light As A Feather" arguably being the most famous and celebrated - few can match the quality distillation of influences and inspirations that marks out "Aguia Nao Come Mosca" as one of the highlights of their self-proclaimed "MPB-jazz" period.
