Bring (4:57)
Curtains (4:43)
Review: ** RANDOMER REPRESS ** Rohan of Randomer's return to the Hemlock label is heralded with Bring/Curtains, a club ready 12" described amusingly as "two iceberg sized hunks of pure stereo freeze". Randomer's been relatively busy this year, issuing a Surgeon approved white label and inaugurating Turbo's Sex Tags aping Warehouse series but it's great to see him back on Untold's Hemlock label for whom Randomer's done some of his best work. "Bring" will be familiar to those who regularly listen to Hessle Audio's Rinse FM show, first making a recorded appearance way back in May, demonstrates an icier, slightly deranged side to Randomer that's not been seen before. Accompanying it is "Curtains" which is blessed with the following wonderful description from the Hemlock press office; "A slo-mo steppers cut that's darker and sparser than George Osborne's mailbox on Valentines. Cold."

Raw Code
Junked
Review: ** Raw Code Repress ** The first release of the year for Hessle Audio sees the long-awaited release of "Raw Code", a live favourite of the sets Peverelist and Kowton perform with fellow Bristolian Asusu as part of Livity Sound. It's been high on the request line for some time, having featured in acetate form on mixes dating as far back as the label showcase for Benji B's Radio 1 show from February of last year, securing it a place on Ben UFO's recent Fabriclive mix. The lead track sports the kind of instantly recognisable string bursts that have characterised Kowton's recent crop of grime influenced techno productions, together with a bouncy yet mechanical groove dominated by weighty sub bass. It comes backed with "Junked", a slower, decidedly more broken production reminiscent of the experimental rhythm tracks present on Pearson Sound's Clutch EP released last year. Essential.

Track 3
Review: Whether it's a new name, a Felix K alias or a just another alias, we'll probably never know. But Hidden Hawaii Sub introduces No to their sub-roster with another soon-to-be sought after and untitled relic. "Track 1" sounds like the low-end hum of a walk-in refrigerator that's been left on for too long, while "Track 2" creatively blends granular dub techno with pitched-down drum and bass. On the EP's B-side, "Track 3", provides some quick and raw to the bone jungle beats which is almost like a Felix K dub to Sandwell District.

Lost Methods
Review: here's something rather intriguing and exciting about this EP from newcomer Etch. Like much of Keysound's recent output, Old Skool Methods consists largely of bass tunes clocking in around 130 BPM, with clandestine rhythms, murky basslines and snapping snares that come accompanied by the kind of wide-eyed, early jungle nostalgia that should appeal to both youngsters and old heads alike. "Hybrid" sets out the formula, pitching a sparse but powerful, speaker-rattling bassline against jaunty rhythms, rave piano stabs, deep atmopsherics and classic vocal samples. J-One collaboration "Sounds" sits somewhere between dubstep and classic two-step, while "Sphynx" rolls along on a wave of "Pacific 808" chords and old skool rhythms. With its pitched-down jungle breaks and paranoid mood, "Lost Methods" is pretty tasty, too.

Targa
Glare
Review: After the success of his Change In A Dynamic Environment series last year, Untold is back in business with this tidy pair of tracks for unstoppable Berlin behemoth 50 Weapons. "Targa" leads the charge with a claustrophobic and yet utterly heart-wrenching techno workout, letting the rhythm pump and suck underneath vaporous gases while the delicate notes and synth strings speak of all the romantic leanings of the most classic Detroit techno. "Glare" uses equally seductive melodic content, although the sinister strings that hover in the background add a dark edge to the broken drum workout, swirling up a maelstrom of mixed emotions with the kind of difficult-to-pin-down verve that makes Untold as essential as ever.

The Beastly Ghastly
The Flattery Of Stalkers
Once Bitten Twice Removed
Review: Hoya Hoya's resurgent label arm continues to impress, following that excellent 12" from the man JTC with a three tracker of optimum quality from one of the UK's most undervalued talents; Altered Natives. Amusingly entitled The Beastly Ghastly, this 12" is a glowing example of why more people need to know about Danny Yorke. Apparently the decision to sign up Mr Natives came after he completely destroyed the Hoya Hoya dancefloor with the unabashed slab of rudeness that is the title track a few months back - good work HH and good work AN! On the flip, you get a more considered side to Altered Natives on two brilliantly named tracks in "The Flattery Of Stalkers" and "Once Bitten Twice Removed" with the freeform stutter of the latter particularly memorable.

Warm Red
Warm Red (Addison Groove mix)
Review: The third release on Lost In Translation sees label boss Addison Groove turn to Sly One, a Bristolian trio of DJs, producers and residents a the city's house and techno club 5127 - and apparently affiliated with the Eton Messy YouTube channel. It's quite the step up for Sly One with just one previous release to their name (the digitally issued Come To Mine on Shifted Peaks) but "Warm Red" demonstrates they are comfortably at home on LIT. Falling in line with the current crop of bass-indebted house music with a techy, rolling edge, Sly One's original is complemented by a remix from Addison Groove that breaks down the 4/4 rhythm for a more abstracted, echo laden stepper.

Shocking
Review: "Roska, Roska, Roska, Roska, Roska, Roska". It's been a while since we heard that vocal sample careening around a percussion heavy house cut, and whilst it's absent from the producer's long overdue return to Rinse, it's still great to see Roska back on a 12" release. The Shocking EP showcases Mr Kicks & Snares production diversity across four tracks; lead cut "Desire" features Vanya, a vocalist whose expertly silky intonations add an element of "chart bothering" to a typically anxious production from Roska. "Penetration Test" is peaktime funky house gone mad, sounding like a Major Lazer instro whilst the title cut is Roska at his grimiest.

Dragon Drop (Eliphino remix)
Egyptian Kings
Review: Fresh from dropping that Trumpet & Badman 12", UTTU offshoot Hot Haus Recs returns with a killer slab from the excellent London based duo Kodiak. If you enjoyed the kaleidoscopic rave of Spreo Superbus, Kodiak's debut release last year on Numbers then your senses will throb with delight when exposed to the Dragon Drop EP which brandishes two all new club burners and a killer refix from the 'up & coming' Eliphino. The title cut sounds like vintage 90s era Timbalaand double dropped and splayed over a near footwork tempo beat pattern and in hands the Eliphino the sense of euphoria is replaced by sub heavy darkness. The best is saved till last with the slalom like stab heavy house of "Egyptian Nights".

Drive
Review: Hailing from dubstep's spiritual home Croydon, Deft are repping the next generation of bass-tickled creations. And with previous releases on labels as varied as Brownswood and Rwina, they're doing it with aplomb. Deep, dark and spacey (as the Bladerunner reference in the EP title suggests), the entire EP acts as narrative that ranges from slo-mo trippiness ("Tesla's Machine") to emotive, pumping filtered house ("Rising Sun"). Highlights can be found on each of the six tracks but you'd be mad to skip past the skippy, fluoro synth scribbles of "Faded" or the blissed out somnambulant sonic lullaby of "Drive". Deft by name, deft by nature.

Extended Ranges
Review: Cid Rim returns to Luckyme with Mute City, a sublime five track release that expands on the themes explored on last year's debut self titled album for the Scottish label. The Viennese producer's free jazz past shines through here as the five tracks are filled with the sort of twisting rhythmic complexity that most bedroom laptop producers can only dream of. Taut and distorted drums ripple through opening cut "Fade" which is let a sense of plangent warmth by those fuzzy chords, whilst "Animus:Anima" has the sort of effervescent bounce that you could quite easily put a R&B Acapella over. Those seeking something for the club should head straight to the excellent title track!

Drone Circle
Review: Having served up his debut LP Civilisation for Tectonic in May last year, Distal makes a welcome return to Pinch's operation with the four track Shadow Egg EP. The Atlanta based producer has been in ceaseless form over the past few years, racking up drops for Well Rounded, Sinden's Grizzly, Seclusias and of course his own Embassy Recordings, and his growing clutch of Tectonic releases only increases Distal's profile as the premiere US ambassador of Bass Music. The four tracks display the diversity of Distal's production palette; lead cut "Ridge City" is a swirling mass of unpredictable snare rolls and epic strings which contrasts nicely with the tense, stripped down "25 Automatic" which has a touch of Maurice Donovan's about it. On the flip "106 Degrees" is slightly deranged, sub heavy jacking house whilst "Drone Circle" pairs blissed out clouds of synths with ghetto house dynamism.

Modular Splash (JD Twitch West Glasgow Optimo remix)
Black Acre (feat Brolin - Chris Carter remix)
Review: After his successful rise on labels such as 2nd Drop and Hot Flush, South London Ordnance kicks off his own Aery Metals imprint with a bold 10" double pack that finds him expanding his sound whilst reaching out to respected peers to leave all possibilities for the future open. "Black Acre" is a tense, sparse cut with stripped, pincer like drums and haunting vocals from Brolin, while "Floating World" gets into a tougher, techno-tinged stomp decked out in metallic tones. It's not all completely bleak though, as "Obsidian" lets some colour creep into the mix and "System" veritably revels in cascades of bleeps over a chunky kick and clap combo. On the remix front, Factory Floor pull no punches with their hissing beast of a version of "Modular Splash", while JD Twitch takes the same track into a curious twirl of percussion and vocal triggering.

I D 5
I D 6
Review: Dipping into the third installment in his present series of releases, Deadbeat has never sounded tighter than he does on "I D 5", marrying his love of subdued dub chords with a razor sharp micro house beat that nails the simple approach with deadly accuracy. It's a hypnotic affair that only moves through the most subtle of changes, primed for maximum dancefloor consumption, much like the counterpart on the flip, "I D 6". In the case of the latter though, the melodic elements are more prominent as the central chord shimmies through the delay, and the overall effect is a more soporific one compared to the funky strut of the A side.

Creepy Autograph - "Back Ally"
Review: Jimmy Edgar's Ultramajic label reaches only it's second 12" and goes conceptual with the first in a series of Metaphysix releases; in Edgar's own words, "reality is based upon thought systems and this is the core of music and vibration, each chapter of the series we will give these ideas to the artists for them to interpret in any way they choose". The debut Metaphysix transmission sees two contributions each from Eden and Creepy Autograph, with the former elusive producer calling shotgun and gracing the A Side with a pair of dubby numbers that have apparently caught the ears of Scuba and Boys Noize. The bleep laden electro cut "Luft" is particularly ace. Down below Creepy Autpgraph resurface after a series of excellent releases on Valentine Connexion and show they've lost none of their class - the stripped back ghetto house of "Back Alley" is great!

Review: With beats as sharp as her fringe, Panda's making some serious ripples in bass circles right now. Barbed with a moody Two Lone Swordsmen vibe, "Return Of The Snake" is a menacing homage to classic electro, "Pure Juice" is heavier on the synths with crisp, icy licks while Chunka's reboot of "Overlondon" takes Panda down a take path and woes her with satanic sonic soliloquies. Uncompromisingly dark and delicious.

Alex Deamonds - "Thick Thighs (Took 1 Night)" (feat Sam K)
Dean Lyon - "Dirty Choir"
Review: If you like the Night Slugs Club Constructions series or the Trax Couture label affiliated with London night Rhythm Talk you'll probably dig East London Club Trax. Set up earlier this year, the East London Club Trax label more than lived up to it's name with the debut release from founder Alex Deamonds, brandishing a quartet of DJ tools informed by his own history in pirate radio. Deamonds features prominently on this second, equally impressive, offering lining up solo on the A Side with the chop heavy ode to everyone's favourite Nike trainer which demonstrates a level of freneticism and rhythmic intricacy that must have left him with RSI. On the flip "Thick Thighs (Took 1 Night)" features Sam K and comes on like a Dance Mania curio remixed in lopsided fashion by Aphex Twin, whilst Dean Lyon goes crazy on the drum claps and choir samples with the durty south flecked "Dirty Choir".

Hall Of Human Origins
Review: Brooklyn multi-instrumentalist trio Archie Pelago step up to inaugurate the Styles Upon Styles label proper with the Hall of Human Origins EP. Previously, SUS have been issuing music under the excellent conceptual BASH series, and their decision to branch out from that is justified with this excellent release from Archie Pelago. Brought to wider attention on last year's self titled debut on Mr Saturday Night, the trio of Hirshi, Kroba and Cosmo D have garnered subsequent praise for their output on Well Rounded and their own Archie Pelago Music imprint. For the uninitiated Archie Pelago focus on an organic and texturally intricate approach to electronic music which they themselves describe as "keep it human, give it soul" and the Hall of Human Origins EP maintains the standards of their previous output. Numerous tempos are covered across the five tracks with "Chronomancer" and "Wrong Apartment (Worms)" stand outs.

Control
Review: The Black Hole EP is the first release on the newly minted label from the Tight Knit crew and offers the talented London-based DJ and producer Morcee his first vinyl release in the process. Leading the way is the title cut which pairs Morcee's juddering stripped back production with a slick and soulful vocal turn from the Funkystepz-affiliated vocalist Lily McKenzie. There's a neat contrast between the darkness of Morcee's arrangement and McKenzie's voice that has undoubtedly appealed to the likes of Oneman and Brackles who've shown early support. On the flip Morcee displays his talent for freneticism on "Control" where an arpeggiated synth spirals out of, er, control over some expert beat placement. A instrumental version of the title track rounds matters off for those that like their sounds sans vocals.

Tonight, Tonight
Review: Damu and Thefft join forces with typically excellent results on the two track Tonight Tonight 12", the second release from the former's self titled label. Often seen collaborating in one form or another, it's little surprise that there's a real sense of behind the boards chemistry here, with Damu forgoing his recent obsession with full blown techno on the title track, instead laying down some of the glistening melodics that permeated his early releases. This element is complemented by the ruff, scattershot drum programming which bursts in all manner of directions with willfully unpredictable abandon. On the flip "Chemistry" shows the pair can go that much harder - some serious sub bass levels on this one!
