Binary Opposition (Ben Klock Process)
Binary Opposition (Inigo Kennedy Process)
Review: The final part of this epic Phase remix project from Token sees Ben Klock provide the most club focused track of the collection, with thick slabs of dub satisfying the urges of those who like their techno straight up - though the melodic synths that breeze through the mid section offer welcome respite. On the flip, Inigo Kennedy provides a dystopian take whose sci-fi synths and electro influenced beats are filled with Drexciyan undertones.

Scarborough Harbour (6:31)
Breathe Them Knees In (5:54)
Grafter Gets A Home (6:34)
6 To 6 Lick (7:12)
Review: It would be hard to tag Blawan's debut on Frozen Border affiliates Black Sun as anything other than four exercises in resolutely grubby, dark and industrial techno, so leave all your "post-whatever" classifications at the door. Lead track "Scarborough" demonstrates Blawan's noirish prowess for uncovering unnerving vocal samples and using the duration of the production to further bury this looped up element beneath the saturated crud of noise built up around the hollow scraping of kick drums that drives the track forth - see his recent YouTube burner "Why They Hide Their Bodies Under My Garage" for further compelling evidence. It sets the slightly sinister tone for what follows with "Breathe Them Knees In" literally growling into life and scheming to blow the head off anyone not prepared for the huge waves of viscous pressure at its core. "Grafter Gets A Home" differs in that the malevolent vocal remains above the parapet of dystopian noise that bubbles underneath throughout its progression, while "6 To 6 Lick" sees Blawan let loose on the drums in schizophrenic fashion.

SFS

Begger
Review: Gerd and Phil land their first set of original Tuff City Kids tracks in style, taking the controls for the second release on Unterton, the newly established offshoot of Ost Gut Ton. The Bobby Tacker EP has Janson and Lauer crafting three tracks of beefcake house with one clear purpose in mind, and executed with the skills they've honed over countless excellent remixes under the Tuff City Kids banner over the years. Lead track "SFS" wastes no time in playing its trump card; a glossy, thick synth line that pulses all the way through the track while the bottom end comes on all rugged and antsy. Meanwhile "Bias" exercises an air of restraint, letting a simple beat unfold while a tense string edges in from the side hinting at the fearsome techno line that growls in the lower register, imbued with the DNA of dub but twisted to a malevolent intent. Finally "Begger" kicks off on some booming Chicago drums slowed down to a modern cruise, but once again it's a powerful lead synth that rules the day.

Analogous Desires
Between Thoughts
Beyond The Night
First Love Syndrome
Review: Modern day NYC legend Jason Letkiewicz adds the ever excellent Construction Paper label to his increasingly bustling discography with the aptly titled Analogous Desires EP under his familiar Steve Summers alias. A rich Juno bassline kicks off the title track, and before we know it we're taken on a Chicago-inspired journey through chimerical strings and crispy 707 drums. "Between Thoughts" opts for a more bumping approach but still retains that trademark brand of Summers euphoria we love so much. On the flipside, Summers presents the classic late-night jam "Beyond The Night," a production filled with warmth and mystique, whilst 'First Love Syndrome' goes even deeper and delivers a comforting cocktail of hi-hats, cascading drums and that infamous NY feel. One for the house heads!

Casual Welding
Review: The ever impressive Avian imprint - impeccably curated by Shifted - comes good again with another essential release form the equally shadowy MPIA3. Although their name might sound like an obscure audio format, there's no loss of audio fidelity here - "WTTP" is a barebones slice of overdriven 303 driven acid techno, whose delicate flecks wrap around a serious kickdrum and little else. The theme continues on the flip with "Casual Welding", a production whose searing analogue noises sound welded to a highly sprung kick. In a current techno climate full of slate gray minimalism, it's refreshing to hear something go for it tooth and nail - highly recommended.

Sean & Lueys Cool Walk
Review: Sean Hernandez's Chicago Skyway project has been a constant source of sturdy, old-skool jackers since he first crept on the scene, and Eargasmic represents the label that has supported his music the most. Having initially issued Wreckage as a CD-r release two years ago, the label is finally returning to place the eight tracks on the medium they belong on. There's often a wilful abrasion to Hernandez's productions, as in the caustic synth line that dominates "Sound One" while gentle pads try in vain to calm the vibe down, but then he just as easily turns to the wistful piano tones of a track like "Joaquin Look At The Stars".

The Praetorian (LP mix)

V10MF!/The Filler
Follow The Leader
Review: "If you do not hear this" a distorted voice says at the start of Shed's third album, The Killer, before deploying a low bass frequency, "or that, you will not feel it". It's a statement of intent which is followed through with some of the heaviest material of the producer's career - whether it's the dense ambient of "STP3/The Killer", the tunnelling, waspish drone of "I Come By Night", or the screaming oscillations of "Day After". Despite being an album grounded by monolithic rave-era breakbeats, it's also an album of contemplative moments - the thermal current melodies of "Gas Up" and "The Praetorian" chief among them. The artwork says it all - this is an album made for the body, and our advice is to turn it up loud and let techno's greatest contemporary producer work his magic.

Dirty Paws
Fedec
Skana
Kingdom Of Ends
Review: Mark Broom and James Ruskin follow up their Lightbox album as The Fear Ratio with the Skana EP. The introduction of "Dirty Paws" sounds like something you would hear when trying to contact a passed loved one through radio static and white noise. A broken beat drum loop and swooping bass stabs break the confused silence which is later followed by air raid snares similarly heard in Plastikman's "Spastik". "Fedec" falls somewhere between Burial, Aphex Twin and early Scuba productions, replete with fuzzy electronics, moody melodies and over-driven kick drums. Like Stroboscopic Artefacts' Monad series the EP packs an ambient or beatless track and this comes in "Kingdom Of Ends", showcasing the duo's rarely heard penchant for non-dancefloor sound design. The only techno synonymic styled production is "Skana", a beautifully deep and pushy piece of melancholic techno.

Sangre Por Oro
Horns From The West
The Truth
From The Womb
Review: Although his Modularz imprint has been receiving significant attention for its dark, textured take on techno functionalism, Developer's Archive imprint is an opportunity to showcase his own material on limited vinyl only runs. While the beautiful marble charcoal pressing would, in the hands of other labels, be to distract from below par music, there's nothing of the sort in evidence here, with the same intricate approach to sound design as contemporaries Silent Servant and Shifted. "Sangre Por Oro" takes a firm, yet ghostly stomp and foregrounds bleached out, ascending chords, while "Horns From The West" is an apt summation of its mood, with its Mariachi inspired melody and rolling drums. On the flip, "The Truth" goes for hypnotic key stabs shrouded in delay atop a rumbling rhythm, while "From The Womb" begins as an expectedly claustrophobic experience, with its muddy vocal snippet and shackling industrial rhythms, but slowly opening out with lighter hints of melody and gaseous atmospherics.

Hang Up
Sweetback
Review: ** Repress ** Dave Huismans swiftly follows on from that incendiary 50 Weapons 12" with an equally explosive return to the Clone Basement Series. One of the first names to contribute to the series back in 2009, both "Hang Up" and "Sweetback" find Huismans eschewing the jagged, garage flecked drill techno dynamism of last year's "Take The Plunge" for some of his "most banging, straight-forward club material to date". The lead track is bristling with uneasy liquid funk, heavily diced Hancock vibes cascading around the buccaneering drum patterns with glee. "Sweetback," meanwhile, creeps out from the murky depths, driven by dust battered kicks and gnarly, sinewy analogue twists - there's no greater philosophy at work here, it's simply dark techno for dark rooms.

Sommer
Review: And so it continues. Cosmin 'TRG' Nicolae's evolution as an artist has at times seemed like a condensed history of electronic music in reverse. From jungle, bass and break beat to house, electro and techno and now what sounds like his take on Detroit techno, the Romanian could never be accused of standing still. This refusal to succumb to inertia would mean little if every stylistic shift heralded little more than a nod to ingrained narratives and approaches. However, the real beauty of Cosmin's music is that each realignment brings with it a wealth of idiosyncrasies, be it a familiar vocal snippet on his house releases for Rush Hour or now this unusual interpretation of deeper techno. The title track's intro doesn't suggest that Cosmin has plans to worship at the altar of Derrick May or Carl Craig, as it starts with the chime of bells and the whirr of abstract percussion. Suddenly however, a dreamy chord sequence floats in, but it doesn't sound typical thanks to the slightly off beats - a throwback to his recent past- and the rolling snares that have more in common with hard mid-90s German techno and some excellent pitch bent hats. "Sommer" features a similar chord sequence, but Cosmin is quick to double it up, couple it with crashing snares and a delay that gives the arrangement a dynamism that is the common characteristic in his artistically schizophrenic body of work.

Formu
Review: Developer continues his fine run of form with this EP for Gynoid Audio with four tracks of typically driving yet intelligent techno. "Tiburon" opens on a decidedly mechanistic tip, as factory line rhythms drive forward gaseous textures, while "Shade" is decidedly chunkier affair, with shackling hi-hats playing off against deep organ drones. On the flip, "Bodega" fills its rhythmic gaps with shrill bleeps and electro-acoustic tones, but it's "Formu" that's the real powerhouse of the release, as pounding kicks go head to head with undulating sheet metal chords.

Evoke
Review: As I Look To The Sky From The Surface Of The Water is the much awaited second album from GRIT, aka London producer Gary Brackley and it's found a perfect home on Meanwhile. The label is well placed to be an outlet for GRIT's explorations deep into the realm of deep techno, thanks to it's standing within the techno community and this album stands tall alongside contributions from the likes of Murmur, Sven Weismann, Bvdub and Conforce. Opening with the expansive title track, GRIT sets the tone for what to expect with the ripple of syncopation shifting in and out of focus amidst the viscous layers of foggified luminescent ambient texture. Across the subsequent five tracks this tone is retained throughout as Brackley playfully explores the inventive sparks that arise when rhythm rubs with texture, with the smudged out subaqueous "Safer Retreat" a real highlight.

Caslon
Breathe
Review: Jack Dunning's audacious three part project reaches number 2, and while the first instalment may have been inspired by drum & bass (in spirit if not necessarily in sound), it seems as though this pair of tracks are more concerned with the aesthetic of early Detroit techno. The near industrial thud of "Caslon" utilises a simple monophonic sequence that slowly builds into a storm of raw square waves. "Breathe" meanwhile opts for a deeper approach which is one of the producer's most sedate works to date, utilising a swung rhythm that is as far from his traditional jackhammer approach as you could imagine, with a gentle bass accented with a Vangelis-like sci-fi soundscape. Highly recommended.

Node #2 (Delta Funktionen remix)
Review: Starting to get some real recognition for his icy take on vintage electro and techno, Robert Witschakowski seems unstoppable in his quest to mould ever fresh and vital shapes out of well-worn approaches. On this EP for Modal Analysis, he starts proceedings with the devastating half-speed lurch of "Node#1", eroding the beat with lashings of distortion and letting the synths swerve into each other in the fuzz. "Node#2" is far more incisive, stomping out a guttural line in electro synths and booming 808 kicks. Delta Funktionen smacks things up sharp with a punchy remix, retaining the dominant character of the tune.

Mango Came Round
New Life (E>S>P)
Review: You always know what you're going to get with a Mr G record. No nonsense house music spread over a sizable running time with little need for variation and switch ups. From the moment his new album State Of Flux kicks into action for Rekids, there's an inescapable spirit at work that sounds like it could be quite content being either a peak time banger or a stalking warm up track. That said "Remember This!" could only be made with the heat of the night in mind. "Pause 4 Thought With You" is a real head-snapper with the unusual vocal delivery of Garfield King, while the bassline plods out a mean line in simple synth notes.

Obsessed
Obsessed (Substance remix)
Obsessed (SCB edit)
Review: Releasing Obsessed on a label other than Sandwell District must have felt strange to Function. However, like "Ember", the US producer's final outing for the now defunct imprint, "Obsessed" is an understated affair. Closer to early Speedy J and Warp's Intelligent Techno series than the austere rhythms of Sandwell, its dreamy synths unravel to reveal a cacophony of bleeps and a lithe rhythm that never quite makes it onto the dance floor. Substance's version starts in a similar vein, but the Berlin producer maintains a wiry, minimal rhythm throughout, which acts as the basis for a gradual shift into grinding metallic riffs. Scuba's SCB edit is the most dance floor friendly track, the snappy, hissing percussion and stacatto, clattering drums underpinning an effective, building filter.

Edit Select, Shifted - "A38"
Rhea - "Nectar"
Donor - "Argon"
SHXCXCHCXSH - "Kxxkxxxkkxx"
Review: Semantica Records returns with a noxious blend of menacing, stripped down techno cuts. Although each release has stood out on its own, the label has also managed to find its own sound eithin the techno world and we are delighted to see Edit Select unite forces with Shifted for the first track, "a38", a classic 4/4 Berlin groove with metallic hi-hats and harsh melodies. Newcomer Rhea complicates the drum patterns on "Nectar" and creates a monster techno excursion for peak time hours. Donor's "Argon" takes a more minimalistic approach and drags ringing bleeps into a commanding kick drum arrangement. "Kxxkxxxkkxx" is as sparse as techno can get and as waves of reverb wash over dripping drums and airy sounds; we can see why this track was given such an obtuse title. Powerful techno bombs.

Review: On the second 12" of Token's Phase remix project Planetary Assault Systems puts his abrasive stamp on the source material, with juddering synthwork poking out of the cracks, while CTRLS takes a dustier approach, taking the original's four to the floor approach and putting a bit of broken beat swagger into it - but one that's refreshingly off the grid.

Eradicate Me
Review: Formerly seen performing mixing duties on a clutch of Sound Signature mixtape CDrs along with the one 12" drop on Theo Parrish's label, the man known to some as H Fusion and others as Howard Thomas makes an overdue return - helming the sixth release on the increasingly on point Fit Sounds imprint. Lead track "Wicked, Wicked Bitch" features assistance from another Fit Sounds acolyte in the shape of Marcellus Pittman, and is one of those raw, off kilter examinations of the Detroit sound - all detuned keys, underplayed percussion and sudden deviations into moments of pure Motor City emotion. From here, proceedings go curveball with "Morocco" a suitably titled exploration of beatdown that uses all manner of North African tones and percussion as its influence, whilst "Eradicate Me" is a relentlessly shifting exercise in chopped up, sparsely delivered Detroit electro rhythms.

The Outsider (Conforce remix)
Review: Always a label known for unearthing some of techno's deeper producers, 7th Sign present the debut from Glasgow based producer Leeon, a producer with a flair for Detroit moods that evoke the productions of Rick Wilhite and Marcellus Pittman. "Birth of a Season" wraps sunset pads around restless strings, while "Miles and Miles" creates a piece of helium-light intergalactic soul that Space Dimension Controller would be proud of. "The Outsider" is the real killer though, as a twisting arpeggio rushes across deep Rhodes keys. Finally, Dutch techno don Conforce delivers his own take on "The Outsider", placing the melody firmly in the background, swathing it in delay and firming it all up with gritty 909 beats.

Review: For the second instalment in Developer's July emissions, there's four more po-faced techno workouts to be enjoyed for those who want their 4/4 focused and unforgiving. "Dirty Drive" sees Developer stretching to work a melody into his machinery, coming out with a metallic dub chord drowning in its own echo, while "Dirty Drive 2" adds some complexity to the musicality and creates an utterly engrossing hook in the process. Shifted's remix keeps a careful distance between the clean beat and the murky textures of the dubby elements, but for a real lesson in refined techno composition head straight to Stanislav Tokachev's "Building Peaks". Simplicity doesn't come more captivating than that synth line.
