Visage
Visage (Leif remix)
Review: Operating from the heart of Brooklyn, NY, the latest artist to sign up to Ornate is Jordan, whose plush deep house sound has already surfaced via a collaboration with Fred P on the Deep Explorer compilation Far & Beyond.

Living on the border of the Bushwick and Ridgewood neighbourhoods, the title of the EP is a nod to the difference Jordan sees between his own spiritual, detailed work and the trend for rougher analogue sounds that have been sweeping the city he calls home. With a focus on expressive, richly melodic synths and delicately balanced rhythms, his music stands apart from the wave of guttural lo-fi sonics, and yet this is still house music with that East coast punch where it counts.

With an imminent release for the noted Finale Sounds imprint establishing Jordan well within the remit of high-end house and techno, it gives us great pleasure to present these exercises in soulful immersion, from the three 4/4 driven pieces to the ambient vignette "Visage". With the door open for more experimental interpretations, it made perfect sense to invite former Ornate guest Leif back to turn out a remix of the track, his own hushed tones having recently graced a critically-acclaimed debut album for Fear Of Flying. It's the ideal complement to an EP of highly developed musicianship that spells another exciting step forward for both Jordan and Ornate.

Review: Andrea finds himself going from strength to strength with each release he delivers Ilian Tape and "Clouds" is definitely the hit track on this record. Just listen to that arpeggio and those drums. "Drain" is also another great production which you can imagine DJs like Truncate and Ben Sims through to Marcel Dettmann and the Lobster Theremin crew championing, while over on the B1 there's "Void", a smooth and deep, syncopated techno cut. Lastly, the frenetic drums in "Barnard 68" hold down a tight groove while grimey blobs of bleeps pop and burst like cooling molten lava.

Review: Terrence Dixon's announcement of plans to retire from techno with immediate effect earlier this year have typically gone without any further explanation, though it's been heartening to see his final round of projects surface over the course of 2014. Having already committed a killer Population One 12" to Metroplex, Dixon delivers another fitting parting shot in this LP for Rush Hour, who took their name from his classic Pop One production "Rush Hour". Theater Of A Confused Mind is a powerful statement from Dixon, expanding on the sci-fi themes of previous Population One material and posing several cryptic questions. Dixon's own voice introduces the album on "Out Of Control" and as matters progress those trademark queasy lines of melody begin to take control - "Inner City Circus" being a stand out of this set.

Review: Melja is a young artist who makes his vinyl debut on Mister Saturday Night after putting out digital releases on labels like Car Crash Set and Hot N Heavy. For this release the New York label has exhumed from Melja three cuts of bottom-end heavy, lo-fi and distorted techno music that will beef up a house set or nestle into a rhythm section of a long haul techno session. "I Won't Forget" is the heaviest, industrial track on this 12" while "Steady Mobbin" is body rhythmic, but with out the slam and assault you might hear from say, Token.

Gunnar Haslam - "Overcomplete"
Acid Jesus - "Radium"
Review: Naif steps up with an interesting split disc that spans the new and the old, as L.I.E.S and Argot bright spark Gunnar Haslam takes over the A side with the fulsome bubble of "Overcomplete" while Roman Flugel's long-standing Acid Jesus alias gets a little reissue treatment with the abrasive percussion workout of "Radium". The former is undoubtedly the friendlier, darewesay delineated offering, as a tidy 303 line and steady drum machine sizzle work into a trusty formation for the floor. Flugel's effort is of course a more fringe effort that makes dubby effects processing sound like the devils work, and is all the more distinctive for it.

Review: Though perhaps not the most familiar of artists in the ever swelling techno community, Ukrainian techno producer Stanislav Tolkachev has been plying his trade since 2006 and picked up some high profile fans along the way. Everyone from Pangaea and Untold to Call Super and Volte Face have been known to drop some Tolkachev, whilst last year's Simple Is A Miracle 12" for Semantica seemed to open the Ukrainian's production charms to a whole new audience. It's nice then to see Stanislav return to the Spanish techno outpost with Right Angle, a 12" consisting of four tracks that will please fans of both Dozzy's soundscapes and Robert Hood's driving rhythms.

Review: As one of the more distinctive minimal house operators in these times, Ion Ludwig makes for a snug fit over at Trelik towers, and with this three tracker it's not hard to see why his records are so highly prized these days. "46 LJ + Felix Ballad" is a refined groover with a fine balance between gritty low end chunk and gossamer top-end, working subtle hits of bass and illustrious string sweeps into the mix to great effect. "EM Carpet" meanwhile darts out into more obscure territory, keeping the beats to a minimum and focusing on warm and fuzzy synth tones cycling

Review: When it comes to dub techno, you need look no further than the master of the genre, Basic Channel. It's been a good long while since there was any fresh material on wax from the immortal German outfit, but now they have looked back over their archives and realised that "Q-Loop", originally found on the BCD CD release, never made its way on to vinyl, and so here it is for all the Basic Channel completists out there. There's no need to go into detail about the music, but an extended fourteen minutes of "Q-Loop" stretched across the A side can only be a beautiful thing. On the flip you can also enjoy the aqueous strains of "Q1.2" and "Mutism"s vaporous ambience, both of which are enjoying their first outings on the black stuff.

Review: Whatever you think of Julio Bashmore, he should be given a lot of credit for getting Funkineven onto his Boardwalk label. Stevie J's particular blend of drum machine abuse, intergalactic synths and wonky acid funk is amongst the freshest in house right now, as Species proves. The centrepiece is the eight-minute "The Joker", a decidedly raw fusion of jacking 909 drums, interstellar chords and sci-fi melodies that, at one point, brilliantly slows down and speeds up again, "French Kiss"-style. There's plenty to get excited about elsewhere, though, from the title track's beatless, string-laden atmospherics, to the acid assault of "Aviator" and the next-level Detroit techno meets-electrofunk madness of "Mars".

Review: Loaded in conceptual background and forming a follow-on to last years The Jungle Planet, Jeff Mills continues his Sleeper Wakes series with this highly developed album of forward thinking electronics both ambient and energized. "Stellar Black Connector" certainly hits upon his style of techno, albeit in a more cinematic and patient way, but much of the album is more concerned with atmospheric vistas that play out like richly realised incidentals that do a fine job of projecting the accompanying imagery into your cerebral cortex. With its masterful production and unapologetic forward focus, albums don't come much more techno than this.

Review: After the meteoric impact of his self-released singles and spots on Hessle Audio, Power Vacuum and Bleep, the electronic music world has been waiting patiently for TJ Hertz to step up and share a wider vista of his sound world. This debut LP for PAN does not disappoint, channelling the electronica quality of his most crushing club music and giving it a chance to roam that bit more freely. The beats still hit hard on the likes of "Ratchet", but that's not their only purpose. With sound design and general production fireworks at the forefront, whether you can dance to this or not is unimportant; what matters is how completely edge-of-your-seat thrilling it is to listen to, from every space age sweep to each grubby reverb impulse. We always knew he had it in him, and Objekt has more than delivered on that promise.

Review: Fans of Bio Rhythm will know the Rotterdam operation are found of working with Jamal Moss, with two dizzying platters from the Mathematics boss under his Sun God alias helping Paul Du Lac to establish the label in it's first year of business. Moss returns here alongside Noleian Reusse as Africans With Mainframes, a project the pair have shared on an intermittent basis over the past 12 years and their first release together in four! It's not clear when these two productions date from, but if the title track and "Tonkolili" are the result of recent times in the studio Moss and Reusse have evidently lost none of their studio chemistry. The B side just shades it here thanks to the thrilling feeling the various elements are constantly on the verge of exploding. One for the fearless selectors!

Gate 2 Yesterday
Review: DJ October throws down some dub-tinged deepness for his debut on Skudge, his first release of 2014 and an apparent prelude to a forthcoming debut album for the Swedish label. It's the A-side's "Jaffa" which combines woozy synths of someone like Mr Cloudy with the high powered leads of Legowelt, while the title-track, "Gate 2 Yesterday", is also dubby but there's more of a focus on drums and percussion than textures and riddim. It's nice to have October back and an intriguing hint as to how that upcoming album might sound.

Review: The Head Front Panel label gets extra twisted on this 6th release, one we have been eagerly awaiting here at Juno HQ . At a first glance the four untitled tracks here fit in perfectly alongside previous releases from the blossoming offshoot of Tabernacle, but spend a bit of time with this record and a turntable and some interesting rhythmic kinks reveal themselves. See the smart little drum edits that break up the Mills-style stomp of the opening track, whilst "A2" doesn't go forwards so much as run around in rhythmic circles. Shorn elements of that track seem to be retained on "B1" cut up and moulded into a searing new production that jitters nervously, almost as if it's about to implode at any moment. If you can pick yourself up after that, the closing track homes in on a nightmarish techno stomp that really demands rotation on a heavyweight soundsystem.

The Rewipes Pt 1 (Dino Sabatini version)
Review: If there's one person other than Mike Parker that you'd want to remix seminal techno production "The Wipe" by Teste right now, it would be former Sandwell District alumnus Rrose. Just the thought of this combination is enough the to make your skin bubble, but here Rrose is more reserved than what we heard on, say, "Waterfall", with the producer instead opting to extend a plateau of climbing sound design which makes for one long boil. Dino Sabatini's remix focuses on rhythm and syncopation as opposed to mind bending modulation, which works, because where Rrose flies higher, Sabatini fathoms deeper.

Review: The acid is in full flow here as Solar One Music brings together Helena Hauff and Andreas Gehm for an almighty clash of 303s! The idea of pairing up Pudel resident Hauff with her elder Koln-based compatriot Gehm is a compelling one and makes you wonder why another label hasn't considered it before. Entitled simply Helena Hauff meets Andreas Gehm, the 12" sees Hauff and Gehm draw for two of their densest manipulations of the Roland 303; the Pudel resident in typically loose, straight to tape form on the intense "Rupture". There's more of a robotic feel to "The Purely Painful Confrontation Of Opposites" and it's fairly overwhelmed by the sheer brutishness of Gehm's colossal and sleazy ghetto acid gutter track "HKX". The amusingly named final track "Solar Two" is vintage acid techno, all brisk bouncing rhythms and tumbling kicks drums.

Review: For the third time in 2014, Italian producer and IFM member Fran Mela dons his Robert Crash guise for a trip into the worlds of analogue techno and industrial-strength acid house. Clear hints of Armando, Virgo Four and early Belgian techno can be heard in the cut-up stabs, rolling basslines and jackin' grooves of "Not Nois" and TB-303-powered "Listen You". There's a deeper, woozier feel about "Natil Box", which combines brilliantly loose drum machine programming with some gently spacey chords. Finally, Schito returns to the acid with "Savin Blag", a sweaty jacker reminiscent of Larry Heard's work under the Gherkin Jerks moniker. Dog In The Night one of this year's best new labels? You better believe it!

Review: This fall, Trevino makes a rare appearance off the golf course with a four-track EP on his brand-new label, Birdie. Up to this point, the Manchester-based producer's work has been scattered across imprints manned by industry heavyweights like Ben Klock's 'Klockworks' and Martyn's '3024', but now he's made a home for his own relentless output. It was a natural step for a stalwart who never stops creating, and manning his own platform has allowed him to explore the depths of his sound with no holds barred.
The EP opens with "To The Core", a driving house track with melancholic synths and metallic percussion. "Warmer" is more of a sunrise jam; it inspires a sense of wonder with gliding synths, yo-yoing melodies, and cute bleep-bloops. The b-side features the more ominous track "Playtime", which develops a menacing edge with a gritty bassline, and "Mesmerize," another psychedelic cut with wavering synths and glittering instrumentation.

Rodhad provides two versions of Humea, and the first is deep and bleepy with hi-hats that cut straight through the mix, while the dirt mix is heavier in bass with bleeps that are scattered not singular. Review: With speaker racks still settling after being put to the test by his recent third LP The Air Between Worlds, DC's most foremost Dutchman Martyn looks to have wasted little time in returning to matters of a 3024 nature. The label's latest release comes from Doms & Deykers which may sound like a new name, but is in fact a collaborative effort from Martyn and compatriot Steffi. Using their respective surnames, the first fruits of Doms & Deykers is the three-track Fonts For The People 12?, which seems perfectly balanced between the pair's tastes and sounds. The title track is proper rude acid-flecked breakbeat rave primed for the dankest of basements, whilst "Penny's Groove" retains the 90s hardcore vibes but steers proceedings towards housier terrain. Final cut "Tepper" trades in the immediacy in favour of introspection. More of this please Ms Doms and Mr Deykers!

Inaugurated last year with some archival material from Dario Zenker, the ITX series has seen Kowton remix Jonas Kopp in ambient mode and ushered in the debut of Italian producer Schiahri. This fourth ITX issue retains the focus on emergent talent with a quite excellent five track 12" from the superbly named Skee Mask called Serum. Described simply as a producer of "Off-road swingin' herbal jams" by Ilian Tape, whoever Skee Mask is they deserve this debut with all five cuts the sort of tripped out techno that will work on any self respecting dancefloor.

Review: Founded last year, the Head Front Panel series from Tabernacle has proved to be a more serious counterpart to Creme Organisation's equally anonymous R-Zone offshoot. Where the Dutch label's thirteen plus R Zone 12"s have veered from jungle to new beat via house and techno and delivered them with a knowing wink, the Head Front Panel records have remained resolutely for the sterner floors. It's no different with no 5 (one of two released this week) with four untitled tracks that fairly demand beating down in front of a willing audience. The approach veers from the alien Population One style thump of the opening track to powerful loop techno and full throttle 909 rattlers.

Review: California-raised Johannes Auvinen made his name blending hypnotic techno with the distinctive electronics of acid house. His most recent album, 2012's Neo Neo Acid, moved further towards the sounds of Phuture. Ode, his seventh full-length, sits somewhere in between, delivering a sequence of deep, hypnotic grooves that utilise acid lines not to create energy, but as melodic hooks. With the addition of his own half-whispered vocals on a number of cuts, the result is an atmospheric set that feels like the soundtrack to a hazy after party. For the most part, it's very impressive, and has a genuinely weary, late night mood that's strangely attractive.
