Deep Space Orchestra - "Chrome Hand"
Deep Space Orchestra - "Chrome Hand" (Ben Sun remix)
James Johnston - "Faces & Traces Of Home"
James Johnston - "Sunshine Stars"
Review: Cosmic Boogie's Boogie Originals imprint releases its third 12", with the increasingly impressive (and prolific) Deep Space Orchestra at the helm on the A-Side. "Chrome Hand" is a gently undulating slice of shuffling deep house, with a bewitching arrangement and a head-nodding groove. On remixing duties, Ben Sun (of the underrated and hard to spell Voyeurhythm imprint) strips the instrumentation right back, adds a killer spoken word vocal sample and boom - our favourite mid tempo warehouse jam since Marco Passarani popped up on Running Back. Flip over for a brace of original productions from James Johnston - namely "Faces And Traces Of Home" (which is pleasingly reminiscent of Move D's recent work) and the more upbeat "Sunshine Stars".

License To Drill
Slazenger 1
1:00:00
Review: David Woods - one half of filter loving disco tweakers extraordinaire Tiger & Woods - goes solo on this new 12" on Editainment, aptly titled On The Green Alone. We are not sure of the whereabouts of his acquaintance, Larry Tiger, but Dave shows he's equally adept at chopping semi-forgotten vocal samples on his own, with A-Side cut "License To Drill" bumping hard thanks to its indecipherable but immensely pleasing vocal snippets, omnipresent funk riff and delicious keys. "Slazenger 1" and "1:00:00" share the B-Side, with the chunky acid bassline of the former totally outshone by the brilliant bongo/wailing vocal combo of the latter.

Acdise #2
Turn The Light
Acdise #2 (Skudge Feels It version)
Acdise #2 (Gatto Fritto remix)
Review: International Feel adds Japanese techno artist Gonno to its roster, with Skudge and Gatto Fritto employed on remix duties. The label has released material from artists such as Gatto Fritto, Rocha, Bubble Club and DJ Harvey, and, due to the nature of its strongly curated sound, has subsequently gained a reputation as something of a Balearic label. And, in true Balearic form, the imprint has decided to take a left turn and welcome aboard Japanese techno producer Gonno, who counts Josh Wink and Laurent Garnier among his unofficial fan club. The release was suggested by Gatto Fritto (a long time techno fetishist), and the release is actually a collaboration between Gatto Fritto's label Fritto Morto and International Feel, with a new catalogue number to seal the deal. The two original cuts - namely "Acdise #2" and "Turn The Light" - appear on the A-Side, with the cosmic, swirling arpeggios of the former complementing the ambient atmospherics of the latter. Swedish techno dons Skudge turn in a throbbing late night revision of "Acdise #2" while Fritto's own remix is perhaps the highlight, with a deeply cerebral interpretation that might just be one of the finest moments in the International Feel canon. Limited, 180g vinyl here too.

Glowing Palms - "I Don't Wanna Come Daaaan"
Ruf Dug - "Choppin Tom"
Ruf Dug - "Head Band Dub"
Review: The lesser spotted Ruf Kutz label emerges from hibernation with their third release replete with a trio of multi-faceted discoid thrillers. Mancunian Ruf Dug, resident at the Wet Play parties, contributes two tracks, though it's Red Bull Music Academy alumni Glowing Palms that opens proceedings with the bottom heavy satisfaction of "I Don't Wanna Come Daaaan", which expertly teases out an extended groove before the vocal pay dirt hits! Ruf Dug's first slice of disco action is the taut Philly groove of "Choppin Tom", which neatly plays around with the percussive elements before the glorious strings and killer piano hook comes swooping in. Flipside "Head Band Dub" swerves towards expansive Balearica - just wait for the bubbling acid arpeggio to come to the fore in sync with those dramatic piano flourishes.

Stolen Future
Witch Doctor (Toby Tobias Spliced edit)
Mass Illusion
Stolen Future (Toby Tobias Teefed remix)
Review: Even their name gives off an instant air of class and without doubt, the music of Deep Space Orchestra routinely follows suit. Appearing for the first time on Tracky Bottoms (one of our favourite label names of all time FYI), Si Murray and Chris Barker's latest EP opens with "Stolen Future" juggling classic chord rolls, sampled vox and sublime hats with effortless aplomb. It's our pick of the bunch - not without a fight from "Witch Doctor" however, and the Spliced edit from label boss Toby Tobias is equally beguiling. "Mass Illusion" on the flip prowls with a sensual whispered vocal and crashing cymbals whilst Tobias also remixes "Stolen Future", giving it a quicker pulse and dollops of style.

Sunlight
Sunlight (dub)
Review: More commonly known for his dusty fingered crate digging endeavours alongside Amir, Boston's Kon dips his toes into the world of glistening disco danceteria for the always stellar HOT Gold label. Whilst the world needs another revision of Michael Jackson like it needs another series of Big Brother, there is an undeniable class to "Sunlight" which lifts a mere titular smidgen of the departed King Of Pop's vocal turn from "Rock With You". Placing it amidst a live instrument mid tempo crunch filled with classic disco flourishes such as tight bass guitar and swirling keys, it makes for another HOT Gold hit. On the flip there's a slinky dub version where you can appreciate the input of some of the other artists involved, such as Tom "Disco" Noble on guitar!

Drrtyhaze - "Get Down To Your Body"
Mankind - "Marimba On Toast"
Pete Herbert & Golden Fleece - "Interstella"
Review: After countless releases stretching back to a debut drop from Greg Wilson back in 2006, the classy Redux imprint switch up tactics with the first in a series of various artist Pick & Mix EPs. It's a fine debut too, that stretches across the disco globe from Australia to New York via London. Proceedings commence with NYC duo Drrtyhaze, no strangers to Redux, who hog the A Side with the elongated disco house delight of "Get Down To Your Body". It is however overshadowed by the contribution from Mankind, last seen on 3rd Strike and claiming to be "beamed to Atlanta from a passing interstellar cruiser" and now seemingly residing in London. Taking on the same Alexander O Neal classic that was recently reworked to such devastating effect by Maxxi Soundsystem might seem foolish, but the Mankind treatment on "Marimba On Toast" swerves down some demented Maurice Fulton path and is totally different in execution. Finally, Pete Herbert teams up with Melbourne's Golden Fleece on the bumping slap bass odyssey "Inter Stella".

Grand Master Duff
Slow
Review: Mr Duff returns to his Disco alias with two typically lackadaisically paced edits of familiar jams - if you can't figure out the source material from the titular clues and sound clips then back to music history night classes with you! "Grandmaster Duff" teases out the classic strains with the sort of expertise you'd expect from the Duff, whilst all manner of dubbing and delay utilised in the name of fun. On the flip, this nation's favourite Australian sees one of her most ubiquitous tracks almost ground to a halt and married with one of house music's most famous hooks (which has been equally slowed down).

Ejeca - "Tetra"
Chamboche - "Mi Senti"
Zoo Look - "Stab Game"
Mann Made Music - "I Choose You Hutch"
Review: Brand spanking new UK label Tusk Wax debuts with a limited vinyl-only four track sampler. There's a scarcity of information around on the new imprint other than that they are "disco inclined" and boast a roster full of exciting new talent. "Tetra" from Ejeca is a cosmic house/disco driven track with vocal riff, disco sirens and a luscious meandering lower end. "Mi Senti" is up next from Nottingham's finest and Juno Plus one to watch alumni Chamboche; warm, percussive and with a piercing arp'd synth it's the definite floor shaker of the bunch. On the flip, Zoo Look's deep and housey "Stab Game" glides through heavenly reverbed chords and a subtle drum platform. Finally, "I Choose You Hutch" by Mann Made Music is dubby, low slung and divine with a prowling bass, ascending drive and old school vibes.

Heartbreak Theme
Heartbreak Theme (C2 Cinermx mix)
Review: Elusive Belgian duo Ronny & Renzo make a rare move away from their own King Kung Foo label and release "HeartBreaker" on Rekids with none other than Carl Craig (as C2) to remix. Intense and brooding techno cuts are R&R's staple and "Heartbreaker" displays creaking sidelines over muffled ascending beats, throwing down dark synths and obscure samples along the way for good measure Sir Carl Craig takes on the remix that apparently has been two years in the making, and it runs along a similarly dark path with sharpened crashes and twisting metallics.

Cumbia 5
Cumbia 6
Cumbia 7
Cumbia 8
Review: The venerable JD Twitch returns to KZA's Let's Get Lost imprint with four further edits of Cumbia material culled from a visit to Columbia last year. Those somewhat handicapped by the less than syncopated nature of the tracks on Twitch's inaugural Let's Get Lost release will be pleased by the more DJ friendly nature of this lot. Equally, whilst the first round were throwaway in a fashion similar to those Hollertronix EPs (particularly the BeeGees and Rod Stewart cumbified tracks) the four reworks here are much more in the vein of recent Comeme output and all the better for it . Once again there's a dearth of information regarding the source material here, though the second track that graces the A Side is a particular highlight, all rattling techno rhythms upon which it seems like Twitch works through several different Cumbia tracks within the space of several minutes - the gleeful deviation into throbbing acid is delightful.

Out Of Town (Phil Mison continuous DJ mix)
Review: Claremont 56 & Leng label boss Paul "Mudd" Murphy has assembled an impressive cast for this remixed version of Phil Mison's decidedly downtempo - sorry, Balearic - Out Of Town LP. Murphy himself offers up a pleasingly languid take on "Paloma", before handing over the reigns to a succession of similarly minded pals. There's a delicious Balearic dub of "Des Vertes" from Cosmodelica, a sprightly nu-disco rub of "Gambarra" from regular Mison cohort Pete Herbert, a delightfully Scandolearic excursion from Blackbelt Andersen and floor-friendly takes from the Idjuts and Ray Mang. Best of all, though, is Tiago's druggy, synth-heavy version of "Visusu", which sounds like a vivid dream involving Quiet Village and a carload of acid-fried evangelists.

Disco Touchdown (original mix)
Disco Touchdown (Dr Dunks remix)
Touch The Sky (E Track)
Touch The Sky (Eddie Mars remix)
Review: Those who keep an eye on the more discerning end of the disco spectrum will know the Stockholm trio Name In Lights for their fine work on the FEED imprint, as well as gracing the good ship Wurst with a remix of Nick Chacona late last year. The latter should act as a beacon of taste, as does this full release for the always solid Under The Shade label which should see the trio gain wider appreciation. There's an undeniable quality to the deftness that lead track "Disco Touchdown" switches from the opening chunky disco groove into an even more substantial house bump replete with an all encompassing piano hook. Dr Dunks arrives next on remix duties and retains the originals' conceptual switch, growing from glistening dubby disco into something wholly more euphoric once the rising arpeggio pulse pushes its way to the fore. On the flip "Touch The Sky (E Track)" is a leaner groove, filled with expansive melodic touches that suddenly burst into a loose disco jaunt with a delightful vocal hook. Brooklynite Eddie Mars adds some nice electronic bass bounce to the track on a nicely paced cosmic shuffler of a remix.

Native New Yorker (Ashleys Beedle Big Apple Uptown Story part 1 & 2)
Inside Out (DJ Friction extended disco mix)
Inside Out (PBR Streetgang remix)
Review: For the uninitiated, Odyssey are a band who thrived in the 1970s disco boom thanks to an insouciant blend of live funk, soul and Afro Caribbean rhythms. Recently Yam Who's ISM imprint embarked on the Legacy project, which will see the band get back together in the studio to record a new album that includes updated versions of past hits alongside new material. In addition to this, ISM have commissioned a number of remixes, with expertly selected knob twiddlers turning reimagining Odyssey material for contemporary dancefloors. On the first edition, "Native New Yorker" - the first true Odyssey smash hit - is given a thorough disco treatment from Ashley Beedle with his "Big Apple Uptown Story" rife with piano keys, funky guitars and soaring string sections. On the flip, two upbeat and feel good remixes of "Inside Out" from DJ Friction and PBR are both pure disco euphoria. Bells chime, vocals bounce and the irresistibly groovy bass keeps them well and truly alive.
