So We Went Electric
No U Turn
Maniac (feat Russell Haswell)
Review: ** Diagonal Repress ** Since Powell last appeared on his own Diagonal Records label back in 2012 with Body Music, his unique mulch of post-punk textures, industrial techno and jerky no wave beats has taken the world by storm, seeing releases on The Death of Rave and Mute's Liberation Technologies imprint. While Powell's sound to date has been characterised by frenetic, seizure-inducing rhythms, Club Music sees Powell bring things down to a more mixable tempo. "So We Went Electric" is the closest thing to straight techno he's made, though the frazzled textures sound like more Evol than Regis, while the pumped up monosynths that drive "No U Turn" are anchored by an underlying beat and guitar shreds that sound as if they could have come from an old Neptunes beat left to rust. Finally, the Russell Haswell collaboration "Maniac" is as crazed as its name suggests, a shrewd piece of contorted midtempo noise-funk which combines the raw power of both producers brilliantly.

Review: Plaid duo Andy Turner and Ed Handley have been active since the late 80s and are as synonymous with Warp Records as Autechre or Nightmares On Wax. Plaid have few rivals when it comes to mixing choppy electronics with intricate melodies, an approach that seems as fresh and rewarding as ever on Reachy Prints, a tenth album of a celebrated recording career. According to Warp, the nine tracks here find Handley and Turner opening the listener up to the possibility of a sonic "journey into a subterranean world" and you might view such press release speak with a pinch of salt, but tracks such as "Hawkmoth" and "Slam" feel like vintage Plaid.

On & On (Fears Keep On)
On & On (Fears Keep On) (dub version)
Review: Decadance was an Italian outfit of the mid-eighties making, well, italo-disco...The original of this On & On EP goes for rather large sums of money on the web, so if you're into the synth-heavy, boogie-fed sounds of that era then it's your lucky day, this one is a true underground classic! "On & On (Fears Keep On)" contains an utterly gnarly electro bassline, slicing shots of percussion and of course, a winding, lamenting vocal to boot. The dub version on the flip is the real gem, though. The piano keys are sparser and more evocative, the bassline deeper and warmer on the ears. Indulge!

Higher Electronic States
Higher Electronic States (D'Marc Cantu remix)
Review: Death In Vegas overseer Richard Fearless reboots the Drone label in style with a new 12" that sets the tone moving forwards for their stated focus "dancefloor distortion and other musical explorations". Originally founded in 2004 as an outlet for Death In Vegas material, Drone has been on hiatus for almost a decade and it's little surprise to see Fearless himself behind the buttons for the record that formalises the label's rejuvation. Entitled Higher Electronic States, the 12" consists of a solo Fearless cut backed by a remix from MOS and Nation don D'Marc Cantu, with the original offering a fine development in the proto-techno, peak time acid Fearless was beginning to explore in parts on 2011's DIV LP Trans Love Energies. Cantu's remix recasts the track as a murky exercise in foreboding techno.

Review: Multidisciplinary artist Fatima Al Qadiri aligns with Hyperdub to release Asiatisch, a keenly anticipated debut album that's described as a "simulated road trip through an imagined China". First coming to prominence on the UNO label in 2011, Al Qadiri has subsequently provoked critical acclaim for the 2012 Desert Strike EP for Fade To Mind that played on her time spent living in Kuwait as a child, while her work under the Ayshay moniker for Tri Angle explored vocals in a unique manner. Asiatisch expands on the political themes of Desert Strike in a new and unexpected way, and acts as a homage to the style of grime known as "sinogrime". Asian motifs and melodies are prominent throughout whilst conceptually Al Qadiri runs through "the fantasies of east Asia as refracted through pulpy Western pop culture". If that wasn't enough to sell you on the concept, opening track "Shanzhai" is a "nonsensical Mandarin" language cover of Sinead O'Connor's "Nothing Compares 2 U".

Music For Steamed Rocks
Meet Your Creator
I Only Have Eyes For You
Review: This year's Record Store Day has been one of the absolute biggest in the event's history, and it really has been quite hard to keep up with all the sheer quality of the music, both old and new. In the case of the latter, America's most critically acclaimed experimental producer, OPN, has come through with yet another doozy for the Warp institution. As per usual, its ambient with a veritable twist, or rather, OPN's signature weirdness at the forefront. "Music For Steamed Rocks" appears to be a calm, serene blend of sonic landscapes, but it's repeatedly interrupted by violent swirls of noise and distortion, making it a real aural spectacle. "Meet Your Creator" is similarly angelic on the surface, but that is quickly dealt with thanks to subtle infusions of metallic atmospherics and arpeggiating melodies. On the B-side, "I Only Have Eyes For You" is definitely our choice cut, and the label no-music certainly fits right in. Deranged samples, twisted blends of field recordings and a deluge of pads. Wonderful.

Strike Inside
Review: Given the calibre of artists that have previously featured on the No 'Label' series from Rush Hour's Distribution arm it's no surprise to see Luke Wyatt appear under his increasingly ubiquitous Torn Hawk name. It's no surprise either to see Quadrifolio arrive in the slightly obscure gatefold double 7" format, given Wyatt's penchant for taking a singular approach when it comes to his art and the music within lives up to the indulgent format. Tracks such as "Grey Stain" and "Nice Nails" are avant garde but beat focused enough to be danceable, though only the most skilled selectors can manipulate seven inches with stealth. "Strike Inside" is perhaps our favourite however, really showcasing Wyatt's talent for crafting collages of sound into a dizzying whole.

L'Oreal
Review: Because I'm Worth It is the long awaited debut album from former Hype Williams artist Inga Copeland, self released under the shortened copeland name. Since copeland and Dean Blunt parted ways, she's been less visibly active than her former Hype Williams band member (who seems to have adopted the role of post modem troubadour) with just a few low key 12"s to her name and some vague allusions that a debut album was forthcoming. Some eight tracks long, the L'Oreal riffing albums sounds very much like you'd expect a long player from the Estonian musician to sound, but that's not to say it's without surprises. Chief amongst them is the appearance of Actress, who provides 'ambient keyboard' skills to the startling "advice to young girls'. Essential sonics for anyone who likes their electronics murky, lo fi and hard to digest easily.

Rumble (Actress Sixinium Bootleg mix - instrumental)
Review: Given that it was her first album for four years, and thus a comeback of sorts, it was something of a surprise to see Kelis' recent LP drop on Ninja Tune. While Food is a fine set, there's little of the frosty, scratchy experimentalism you might expect from such a leftfield hook-up. Step forward Actress, who delivers a brilliantly icy, glacial, sparse and melodic take on recent single "Rumble". Kelis' howling vocal sounds surprisingly good atop Actress's immensely beautiful and melancholic backing track. The heavenly instrumental is included, too, for those moments when Kelis' urgent delivery is just a little too much to handle.

A Single Point Of Blinding Light
Review: Reykjavik-based Ben Frost hasn't released any solo material since 2009's By The Throat and we weren't surprised when the infamous Mute imprint announced that they'd be releasing his next full-length work. Both the label and the artist share a deeply experimental stance, and one which is just impossible to pin down. Very much in this vein, Aurora is a tense and chilling collage of diverse sounds and sinister quasi-melodies, starting from the opener "Flex", which sets the scene for what quickly unravels into an all-out cyclone of sonics. This is certainly an LP which should be digested from start to finish, but there are arguably some stand-out moments throughout. The jittering bric-a-brac of percussion that is "Secant" cannot be overlooked, and neither can the brooding kick-shots of "Venter". The ethnic noise infusions of "Sola Fide" and "A Single Point Of Blinding Light" are also particularly rich in experimental gorgeousness.

Review: It would be wrong to say that Seattle-based electronic explorer Kerry Leimer made his name in the late 1970s and early '80s, as few picked up on his work at the time. Of course, this may have something to do with the obscurity of his albums; he famously put out just a trickle of cassettes and LPs - mostly on his own Palace of Light imprint - during the period. Thankfully, RVNG are fans, and here present a 30-track archive of previously unheard material recorded in his home studio - mostly using tape-loops and cheap synthesizers - between 1975 and '83. For those interested in ambient, experimental electronica and new age, it should be essential listening, containing as it does thrillingly fuzzy but wonderfully melodic sketches influenced by Eno, Terry Riley, Steve Reich and acid-friend 1960s pop.

Review: Well, needless to say, but Throne Of Blood have bloody done it again. After a strong year thanks to a series of superb 12" releases, the US label has come through with a mesmerising compilation of electronic splendour from a mixed bag of some of our most hotly tipped artists. No other way pf describing it apart form telling you our picks, which are plenty due to the quality throughout all of this release. Juju & Jordash's opener "Stroop", a mystical journey into liquid synths and modular percussion; Professor Genius' aka J.Velez's horror soundtrack approach on "Vista"; and Steve Moore's prophetic bundle of slow-cooking oscillations on "Forever.Alone, Immortal". All in all, this is kind of unmissable and it's so good to seeing artists who are typically tied down to dance tracks being able to branch out into their own reveries. Recommended.

Review: Finders Keepers have started a little revolution as of late, reissuing many of maestro Nicolai's captivating soundtrack works from the 1970's. This time, they've chosen to unearth the sounds of All The Colours Of The Dark, which is arguably Nicolai's most diverse piece of work. "Sabba" opens things up with a slice of pure soul, whereas the funk of "Propiziazione" goes in heavy with a moody, grinding jazz bassline. There's even some Eastern influences on "Evocazione", and some very sample-able breaks on "Insidia". All in all, this is a real beauty and one for the diggers. TIP!

Review: Ladbroke Grove's finest Young Turks introduce the sounds of Quirke, a London-based producer called Josh Quirke, in startling fashion with the Acid Beth EP. Hardcore fans of Pearson Sound will be pleased as punch to see the presence of "Break a Mirrored Leg", which featured on the Hessle man's 2011 Essential Mix and sounds even more stunning in isolation; a cacophony of indiscernible sounds crafted together which build and build in dramatic fashion before dropping away to a brief moment of serenity before the sonic madness takes over once more. Elsewhere "We Landed" and the title track showcase Quirke's mastery of composition whilst "There's A Half Moon In Your Mouth" has shades of Clark about it.

Review: Having contributed a split LP with Thomas Ankersmit to PAN back in 2011, Italian tape fetishist Valerio Tricoli returns to the label curated expertly by Bill Kouligas with Miseri Lares, his first solo album in seven years. Described as his 'Magnus Opus' by PAN, Miseri Lares features some eight tracks that form a cohesive contemporary exploration of musique concrete techniques using a Revox tape recorder as well as digital processing tools. Fans of the Recollections GRM series from Editions Mego will find much to admire in Tricoli's work here, whilst the presentation from Kouligas and photographer Traianos Pakioufakis is second to none.

Review: Recondite, John Roberts, Lawrence, Terre Thaemlitz and feature on this third edition of Enjoy The Silence, Mule Musiq's ongoing exploration of all things ambient. The first installment of Enjoy The Silence series arrived in April 2009, collecting 12 ambient tracks from label friends and family including Terre Thaemlitz, Thomas Fehlmann, DJ Koze and Vince Watson to celebrate the label's fifth anniversary. Since then it looks to have become something of a semi-regular occurrence, with this third volume following 2011?s compilation, which reportedly "focuses on avant-garde textures with a touch of very diverse genres and styles." Returning faces include compilation regulars Thaemlitz (contributing a DJ Sprinkles remix of Primula's "Nobody's In This Classroom"), Lawrence and Koss, who are joined by a host of other names. The Vermont pairing of Marcus Worgull and Danilo Plessow contribute a track fresh from their debut album for Kompakt, while the surprising picks of Roman Flugel and Recondite join the more downtempo-minded Hauschka and caps lock lover John Roberts alongside two tracks from Petre Inspirescu.

Review: On the face of it, this full-length collaboration between ambient legend Brian Eno and Underworld's Karl Hyde is an enticing proposition. With the duo's respective track records, you'd expect Someday World to be a bit of a cracker. Somewhat surprisingly, it's not quite as stunning as you might expect but there are enough brilliant moments to warrant further investigation. Check, for example, the slowly building sci-fi jazz madness of "When I Built This All", the jaunty, off-kilter beauty of the Different Trains-inspired "Strip It Down" and the textured, shoegaze-tinged "To Us All"; all three are simply superb.

Review: More RSD 2014 gear incoming! This year was a real deluge but the surprises never seem to be over given the arrival of one of the most obscure records we know. Strut completists will know all about Rodion GA from that excellent retrospective of the'80s era Romanian experimental outfit, but Delta Space Mission is near impossible to find in its original pressing. Thankfully, we can always count on Strut to release something totally bonkers and sought-after! This record is basically a dream for anyone whose into synths and anything space-age-related, with tracks such as "Bau-Bau" and "Planeta Misterioasa" really sounding like something out of a far, unknown and unexplored corner of the universe. "Study/Signal/Longing For Home" is another sublime slice of extraterrestrial funk, where odd bleeps and computer-game melodies collide for a battle to the death. Terrific.
