Mario's Tuna - "Monkey Mouse" (feat Miles Reverse)
Suonho - "Gypsy Woman" (feat Joe Bataan)
Review: Having previously dropped a brilliant reggae refix of Adele and a Latin remake of Kelly Rowland, this pair of rootsy producers reunited on the Resense label for an excellent covers project. Mario's Tuna hooks up with Miles Reverse to deliver a stellar version of Smokey Robinson And The Miracles' "Mickey's Monkey", featuring driving, raw drums and sweet Rhodes action. Suonho matches him with a bouncy new take on Joe Bataan's boogaloo classic "Gypsy Woman" that comes reloaded with some crisp claps and plenty of pep in its step. Check it!

Humpty Dumpty
Balek
Review: Record buyers of a certain vintage will instantly recognise the piano refrain that opens up "Humpty Dumpty" as the source for one of the tracks on Aim's iconic trip-hop oddysey Cold Water Music. This killer jazz funk standard from Placebo's debut 1971 LP Ball Of Eyes has never surfaced on a seven before so kudos to the Rare imprint for taking the plunge. Complementing this is the Belgian band's psychefunk thriller "Balek" lifted from their sophomore set which really displays the keyboard talents of frontman and sorely missed Marc Moulin.

Broken Beat/Nu Jazz/Nu Soul
Hit & Run (4:11)
Apache (4:52)
Review: Madrid-based Brighton boy Chip Wickham sure knows how to come up with exotic sounds. His name is perfect for the 60s spy theme style funk he cooked up for Lovemonk back in 2011. They proved so popular they quickly sold out and so the today 7" has now been repressed. 'Hit & Run' is exactly as it should sound based on the title - a soundtrack to a high-speed car chase in a 60s movie. 'Apache' then rattles and rolls with busy Latin percussive flair, tumbling drums and a sunny flute lead packed with joy. Both of these will inject any set with next-level vibes.

Put On My Shoes
As Wild As You Can Be
Review: Mary Ann Fisher delivers a downtrodden 1950s R&B superb growlin' vocal performance on this swinging blues number on Jazzman's sub label Juke Box Jam. Mary Ann subsequently became well known as one of the Raelettes (Ray Charles's all female backing vocal troupe). On the flipside the pace is raised a bar as Mary Ann gruffly complains about her lover's wily ways with a foot stompin' R&B rocker.

Shorty Long - "Burnt Toast & Black Coffee"
Johnny Wells - "Lonely Moon"
Review: Two stone cold classics back to back from Jazzman sub label Popcorn, and two songs which really encapsulate the heart of the Popcorn sound. A few years ago, Mike Pedicin's "Burnt Toast & Black Coffee" crossed over from its confines in the Belgian Popcorn scene to become a major record across the Mod, Northern and Rockin' scenes worldwide. A little less known, but still a killer spin, here is the original version, recorded a couple of years prior by Shorty Long. A more swinging affair, with a crooning vocal and huge band arrangements, this still packs a serious punch on the floor. If anything, Johnny Wells' "Lonely Moon" is an even more perfect example of what the Popcorn sound is all about. A dynamic hybrid of styles - high production values - soaring strings and all - a slow but beating, swinging rhythm, and a laid back, lounge stylised vocal all pull together to give this moody little number a hefty helping of something which is intrinsic to Popcorn ... character!

It's Your World
Winter In America
Review: Only 300 copies pressed of this classic Gil Scott-Heron heavy double sider on a limited dinked 45. "It's Your World" is Gil Scott - may he rest in peace - at his funkiest best with an upfront vocal over a driving sax and rhodes- those of you who have seen one or two Gilles Peterson's DJ sets down the years will remember this fondly. "Winter In America" showcases Gil's legendary poetic prose in a meandering, melancholic manner offset by rhodes and flute. Essential.
