Bissao (Pilooski edit)
Forrest Whistle (Daphni edit)
Le Domaine Reserve Du Colonel (It's A Fine Line mix)
Coffee Cola Song (Young Marco remix)
Review: For those that missed it first time round, this killer quartet of Francis Bebey remixes commissioned by Born Bad is granted a much needed repress! Released earlier this year and promptly snapped up by those that know, this plate sees Pilooski, Daphni, Young Marco and It's A Fine Line rework material from African Electronic Music 1975-1982, the compilation of Francis Bebey material that the Parisian label released back in 2011. Anyone that still loves those D*I*R*T*Y edits from a few years ago will rejoice at Pilooski's presence here and his rework of "Bissao" is a wonderful opener that's matched by what follows! Pick of the bunch for us is Young Marco's wonderfully insouciant take on "Coffee Cola Song" which demonstrates his growing prowess as a producer.

Review: And so it is that we say a teary goodbye to Claremont 56's superb Originals series of decidedly Balearic compilations. While a bespoke vinyl box set featuring tracks from the series is due at the end of September, this is the last official installment. This time round, NYC-based, Tokyo-raised Frenchman Alex From Tokyo is the man at the controls. Predictably, his selections are spot on, from the laidback, jazz guitar-flecked bliss of his own Tokyo Black Star re-edit of Pepe California's "Meli-Fali", and the wide-eyed synth-Balearica of Violets' "Sunset", to the tongue-in-cheek post-disco funk of Electric Guitars' "Night Bears", and the 1983 proto-house/boogie dubbiness of Tia Monae's "Don't Keep Me Waiting (Dub Mix)". In other words, it's as impeccable and essential as the rest of the series.

Ernestine Ross - "Brown Baby"
Merry Stones - "Emotions"
Review: He's not a real reverend, but if this Parisian editor was preaching at a nearby church, we'd certainly head down and testify. Hot on the heels of his Marvin Gaye edits come two more juicy soul-laden extensions. First up is Diana Ross's "Brown Baby" wherein the good Reverend adds a subtle 4/4 and twists the emphasis on the strings while keeping Diana's vocals firmly in focus. Meanwhile on the B we see Rev P giving Mary Clayton's "Emotions" a solid boost with a more structured dancefloor focus and some lovely chops on the fills. Exemplary edit science.

Hooked (Kon Nite Time remix)
Review: A second standard pressing of Kon's masterful Cerrone edit arrives following the the initial 'blink and you'll have to pay a hefty price on Discogs' gold edition and subsequent repress. Originally released back in 1981, "Hooked On You" featured an early guest spot from one of THE voices of disco in Jocelyn Brown, and Kon's edit of the track under his Sir Own name has been burning a hole in the internet via Soundcloud and YouTube since late 2010. The label calls it "one of the most talked about and sought after reworks in recent times" for a good reason! If you like this check Kon's new LP for BBE too!

Mess Around
I've Got A Woman
Review: What a reissue! Two of Ray Charles' most well-known, influential hits on one cheeky 45... What's not to like? From thundering piano blues of "Mess Around" to the Kanye-hyped croons of "I Got A Woman", these are unarguably formative moments in funk history. Originally released in 1953/54 respectively both tracks hold just as much weight 60 years down the line. No collection is complete without them.

Confusion
Where Do We Go From Here
Review: Taken from their last album Victim Of Love, both "Confusion" and "Where Do We Go From Here?" represent Charles and the Menahan Street Band's bright, tight funk credentials with powerful glee. The former is an unashamed funk stomper (think Sam Moore) with big psychedelic splashes on the chorus while the latter is a much slower, moodier jam where a bold guitar riff glides us into much more emotional pastures. Outstanding contemporary funk soul.

Just A Little Bit Of Everything
Perdido Street
Review: With a CV that includes Fats Domino, BB King, Duke Ellington, Frank Sinatra, Dizzy Gillespie and Tom Waits, Herb Hardesty is one of the greatest living sax players. And he's still nailing it at the grand old age of 88. Two new instrumentals, both "Just A Little Bit Of Everything" and "Perdido Street" rolls with an authentic jazzy swing that sings to all eras and decades. The former swoons and sways with a tightly plucked R&B motif while the latter is a more full frontal affair but heavy horn leads and beautiful bluesy piano twinkles. Awesome stuff.

I Want To
It Doesn't Matter
Review: This little 7" shaped nugget from Little Jewel originally surfaced on the Tay Star label back in 1967 and was an in demand record on the soul, funk and latterly Mod scenes. High on the want lists of many a dusty fingered collector, original copies rack up hefty prices on the second hand market. Kudos to Rojac Records who present this lovingly recreated reissue of the seven inch, having initially included the stomping "I Want To" on their excellent double LP compilation The Rojac Story: The Best Of Rojac & Tay-Ster.

Who's That Lady
St Louis Blues
Review: The Fryers sub-label of Jazzman Records come correct once again with this crucial 7" reissue from The Isley Brothers! With a career spanning some 50 years and covering R&B, Rock, Funk, Soul and Disco, it's fair to say The Isley Brothers have been one of the most influential groups on how 20th Century music turned out, yet few people actually know that their universally regarded 1973 hit "That Lady" was in fact a cover version of a track they'd previously recorded a decade earlier. Presented here in all its dusty glory, "Who's That Lady" is a jazzy doo-wop workout that will have the collectors out there running towards the turntables to find out whose version it is. On the flip is their wonderful version of the Blues standard "St. Louis Blues" which has been freshly pressed from the original master tapes!

People Say (single verison)
Funky Meters' Soul
Review: Dutch reissue demons Music On Vinyl lay down a sumptuous marker for their upcoming series of reissued LPs from The Meters with this supremely presented 7" of People Say. Funk fans will no doubt be fully familiar with the track that originally saw release back in 1974, though Meters completists will be all over this Music On Vinyl edition thanks to the B Side "Funky Meters' Soul". Originally recorded as part of the studio sessions for the band's classic third LP Struttin, the track didn't make the eventual cut and has never seen vinyl release before.
