Rock / Indie Recommendations August 2010

Review: It's clear from La Roux's barnstorming debut that the duo like their 80s synth pop and extravagant new romanticism. Here we see Elly Jackson and Ben Langmaid called upon to curate and mix together a selection of influences and contemporary favourites. Whilst neither could be classed as a DJ the duo have done a good task of ensuring the 17 tracks retain an impressive flow. The early moments where Japan's "I Second That Emotion" flows effortlessly into Heaven 17 will cause a genuine surprise for those not expecting any degree of beat matching. A selection that moves with a strut through some midtempo 80s synth stomps from Tears For Fears, Fox The Fox and Jam Crew makes for a pleasing listen which picks up the pace dramatically with Sebastien's remix of Kavinsky before dropping expertly into their much lauded and incredibly pleasant cover Rolling Stones.
