Golden Brown (2:55)
Walking On The Moon (3:12)
Review: While trying to keep himself busy during lockdown, musician Laurence Mason decided to record a Dave Brubeck style cover version of the Stranglers' classic "Golden Brown" full of excitable drum solos, and snaking horn lines replacing the oh-so familiar lead vocal. It became a big hit online after he posted it on YouTube, so Jazz Room Records boss Paul Murphy asked if he could release it on wax. It's a superb version that successfully reinvents the Stranglers' gem as a quality jazz tune. Equally as impressive is his flipside version of the Police's "Walking on the Moon", which is as deep, atmospheric, enticing and intoxicating as they come. In fact, it could well be better than the in-demand A-side, and that's saying something.

The Magnificent Moon (Tornado Wallace remix) (8:14)
Im Blau (Sleep D remix) (9:03)
The Gloves Don't Bite (Mount Liberation Unlimited re-edit for The dancefloor) (11:17)
Review: Mildlife has enjoyed a brilliant 2018, tickling our fancy with a cracking debut LP that effortlessly joined the dots between jazz-funk, dub, disco and Afro-funk flavours. To round off the year, their label has decided to sling out this EP of more club-focused reworks. Tornado Wallace steps up first with a wonderfully warm, tactile and groovy version of "The Magnificent Moon" packed with bustling breakbeats, Balearic piano flourished and loved-up chords, before Butter Sessions sort Sleep D brilliantly re-imagines "I'm Blau" as a deliciously percussive slab of pitched-down analogue dub techno. Arguably best of all, though, is Mount Liberation Unlimited's epic flipside take on "The Gloves Don't Take", which offers 11 mesmerizing minutes of chugging dub disco grooves, layered tribal percussion and lashings of spacey jazz-funk synths.

Review: Tireless new music champion Gilles Peterson continues to help platform musical talents from the world of nu jazz and broken beat with the latest instalment of his always great value Future Bubbles compilation. Supported by Arts Council England as always, this one opens with the spring time joys of Forest Law before heart aching Quko vocals make an indelible mark over tender piano playing. Elsewhere there is lush hip hop from KinKai and smooth jazz instrumentals from Iman Houssein n 'Slow Things Down.' This is a particularly delicate and deft instalment which seems fitting in these most troubled and turbulent times.

Review: The Invisible Sessions new album Echoes of Africa is the first on the newly launched Space Echo label out of Italy and is richly rooted in black music. It's been 15 years since a breakout release put this group on the map and now trombonist and multi-instrumentalist Gianluca Petrella and poet, rapper and MC Martin Thomas Paavilainen (aka Benjamin "Bentality" Paavilainen) link once more to great effect as they use jazz as a vehicle to convey their messages of cultural synergy, unity and love. Afro-beat and Ethio-jazz, funk, psychedelia, and modal music all colour the most compelling grooves.

Rhymes (Ryuhei The Man 45 re-edit) (4:31)
Review: There is a whole bunch of lovely disco music from the Far Eastern label At Home Sound landing on wax this month. Chief amongst the goodies is this 7" featuring another excellent brace of remixes from Ryuhei The Man. He turns his hand to two tunes from Yusuke Hirado, a piano player since youth and someone with only a small discography. These tunes are taken from his Tower of Touch album and are perfect jazz-funk fusions for the smoothies out there. Noodling Rhodes keys, neat bass funk and conversational freestyles all take you to the stars on both cuts.

Review: Edit superstar C. Da Afro comes to Super Spicy Records fresh off the back of a series of big outings on labels like Tropical Disco, Samosa Records, Masterworks Music, and many more. Once again this increasingly vital studio whizz comes correct with a series of playful disco house bombs. 'Don't Give Up The Groove' plays with filters, layers up the funky riffs and soars on a diva vocal. 'Wantin' U' is a classic house tune with authentic old school production chops and 'Holding On' is a super sweet outside party tune for the warmer months. 'The Solo Groove' sends you home on some feel good strings that melt any heart.

Review: Mop Mop's legendary third album is 10 years old in 2021 and to mark the occasion it is getting this special limited repress on black vinyl for the first time ever. Written, arranged and produced by Andrea Benini, the 12 track record takes in spiritual sounds, hypnotic jazz, tropical funk and soul and plenty of Afro and Latin stylings. Collaborations abound with the likes of UK vocalist Miss Baby Sol, jazz crooner Alan Farrington and more all adding plenty. The tracks all add up to a whole story about a Savage searching for perfect land and makes for adventurous listening.

Review: The Mercury Prize nominated Portico Quartet impressed with their powerful album Art In The Age Of Automation: it saw them rebooted as a quartet after a brief spell as the three-piece Portico. They have always been an impossible band to pin down; taking in aspects of jazz, electronica, ambient music and minimalism but the group have undoubtedly crafted their own singular sound. On this reissue, there's the dashing and cinematic bliss of 'Objects To Place In A Tomb' and the hypnotic live drum and bass of 'A Luminous Beam' amongst other highlights.

Review: Dean Brown's Little Skull project offers fans another sublime and sophisticated journey through pared back chamber folk stuff. Timeless arrangements, packaged with a contemporary attention to detail in so far as production goes, it's a stunning five-part musical story that is a joy to hear unfold.

From the emotive, jazz-inflections of perhaps the most traditional track here, the somewhat mournful and reflective '02', through the delicate fret plucks and keys of '04' and the piano and guitar warm ups on logically titled opener '01', despite the minimalist approach there's huge depth in the timbre of each finished article. Tunes that feel easy to get lost in, gently compelling us to give ourselves com-pletely to the work and relish every moment we spend in this beautiful, beguiling, mysterious place.

Review: Masterminded by Danish stwart Alex Puddu and the Ivisible Session's Luciano Cantone, The Afro Soul Prophecy is a collaborative project featuring contributions from seriously good jazz, soul and Afro-funk musicians from around the World. Of course, sometimes such all-star affairs fail to live up to the hype, but Heat In The City certainly does. Offering a mixture of Roy Ayers' style jazz-funk, Afro-beat, Latin grooves, disco and Blaxpolitation funk instrumentals, Puddu and Cantone have managed to get the most from their contributors while balancing free expression with a detailed, intricate musical script packed to the rafters with superb musical details. For that reason alone, we'd argue that the album is well worth picking up.
