Temarasa (5:36)
Chor Gway (4:43)
Review: When it comes to the jazzier, more Latin-focused side of GAMM's output, much of the best material has always come courtesy of Sugarloaf Gangsters - the re-edit alter ego of carnival house maestros Spiritual South. Here they return to the Swedish imprint for the first time in 14 years with a two-tracker that's every bit as sweaty and celebratory as their previous work. Check for example A-side "Temarasa", a brilliantly tweaked and subtly touched-up revision of a heavily percussive Brazilian workout laden with sizzling samba horns and heavy funk guitars. Equally as potent is flipside "Chor Gway", an epic African style drum track peppered with dub style electronic noises underpinned with a deliciously weighty, sub-heavy bassline.

Review: Just how much can be done with a mere three musicians at play? In the case of GoGo Penguin, here on their fifth album and with one Mercury Music Prize nomination under their belt, the answer seems to be 'as much as those three musicians want'. This new collection of jazz-electronic-classical work again showcases how commanding and innovative the trio can be. Combining Chris Illingworth's keys, Rob Turner's percussion and the mournful double bass of Nick Blacka, this self-titled outing is a genuinely epic journey that makes transitioning between styles seem easy, seamlessly nodding to post-rock, ambient, movie score and more. Technically phenomenal, conceptually innovative and destined to transport listeners with each and every note, if you've not explored these guys before now's the time to get involved.

Review: DJ crew Jazz 'N' Palms are probably best known for their association with Ronnie Scott's in London, where they can regularly be heard warming up for bands. Their new vinyl venture explores the more Balearic side of their musical personality, with EP one featuring re-edits of tracks often played poolside at Pikes Hotel in Ibiza. That means a mixture of languid, Pat Metheny-ish Mediterranean jazz-fusion ("Coastal Highway"), Latin-fired jazz-funk ("Going East"), sumptuous Rhodes-laden soundscapes ("Chica"), humid Afro-Cuban jazz ("1492"), afternoon-fresh Flamenco-jazz fusion ("St Martin"), and the kind of relaxed, louche fare that Bob James would probably enjoy ("Strings of Spring").

Review: Lascelle 'Lascelles' Gordon is the creative powerhouse behind Vibration Black Finger, and once again here he excels on a second album that furthers his magnificent jazz sound. Obscure spiritual sounds of the 70s are the melting pot from which he mostly draws, with plenty of like-minded collaborates all contributing their own skills to the mix. Collective empowerment and personal development all enrich the album and its progressive message, and it was all put together from old ideas on tapes and DATs that he had worked on over the years. Instrumental segues stitch together the thoughtful vocal pieces and moments of real gusto help it stick long in the memory.

Sun Khosi (3:55)
Chrysalis (3:13)
Review: Touchingly, the A side of latest single from Ruby Rushton is a tribute to de facto bandleader Tenderlonious' father, who spent many years working in Nepal. Entitled "Sun Khosi", the track is a brilliantly summery blast of percussive, Afro-fired jazz fusion laden with sweat-soaked horn blasts, snaking Latin trumpet lines, deep Rhodes notes and inspired alto flute solos from Tenderlonious. B-side "Chrysalis" was composed by keys-player Adrian Shepherd and was influenced by the style of one of his inspirations, jazz pianist John Taylor. It's up-tempo, bold, hugely enjoyable, electric piano-heavy and sits somewhere between jazz-funk and the kind of jazz-fusion fare made famous by Azymuth.

Review: It's early days for Meftah, who you may have spotted remixing Amp Fiddler on Mahogani Music alongside Jahn Cloud, but this low key 12" highlights him as a serious talent to keep tabs on in the Detroit music community. There's no hiding his musical roots and influences, as dusty keys, live bass and loose, expressive percussion intertwine in a mellow, bluesy haze. This is cut from the same cloth as Kenny Dixon Jr, Theo Parrish, Jay Daniel and scores of others, but Meftah has his own mellow mood to impart on these five addictive, seductive trips through deepest jazz-inflected house.

K15 - "Elemental" (7:53)
Culross Close - "Intrinsic Value" (4:30)
Review: K15 has been a man on a mission since he first emerged. The London based musician and beat maker has a truly cosmic sound that leans heavily on jazz for inspiration. He's worked on vital labels like Wild Oates and Eglo and now pops up on Mother Tongue to care of one side of this hot 12". His "elemental" is a far sighted track with cosmic keys and spiritual pads layered up over tumbling broken beats. On the flip, his other alias Culross Close appears with "Intrinsic Value" which is a lush track at the intersection of house, jazz, broken beat and jazz-funk. It is stuffed with the sort of very real feelings that define all his work.

Review: The Allergies' debut album introduced the world to the way they effortlessly fuse funk, soul, disco, hip-hop and breaks into dancefloor-ready nuggets of ear candy. Taking classic sounds and reshaping them for the modern age is the signature that won them plaudits across the globe. Not ones to rest on their laurels, it hasn't taken long for them to deliver more of the goods on their second full-length album. As well as taking the successful formula of the first record and expanding on their sound, the band enlisted two giants of underground hip-hop to bless mics on the album as well. After a hugely successful collaboration on their debut LP, once again the dynamic lyricism and production skills of the inimitable Andy Cooper (Ugly Duckling) are present and correct in this new collection.

Review: Former Brand New Heavies founder member Lascelles Gordon has delivered some of his most inspiring work since launching the jazz-focused Vibration Black Finger project in 2016. Each release to date has been superb, with the producer/percussionist being joined by a rotating cast of top-quality musicians, vocalists and collaborators. Sophomore set "Can You See What I'm Trying To Say" is, in our humble opinion, his strongest release to date: an inspired, imaginative collection of compositions rooted in obscure 1970s spiritual jazz but also informed by dub, post-punk, free-jazz, 23 Skidoo and smoky trip-hop. Throw in a swathe of field recordings used to add texture and atmosphere, and you have a stunning album that should be on everyone's shopping list.

Review: Thomas Xu tends not to release much music, but when he does it tends to be musically rich, rhythmically complex and very, very good. That's certainly the case with "Places In Time", his second EP on Steady Flight following an inspired 2017 debut on Theo Parrish's Sound Signature imprint. There's much to set the pulse racing across the EP, from the heavily analogue, synthesizer-powered, intergalactic jazz-funk looseness of "Easin", and the slipped 21st century instrumental space-jazz of "Tired A Being Tired (What Are We Here For)", to the densely layered, piano-driven ambience of "Promise 2", and the hard-to-pigeonhole eccentricity of closing cut "Let's Go See Roy".

Review: Leifur James' 2018 debut album, "A Louder Silence", was that most rare of musical gems: a hugely entertaining album of eclectic, off-kilter experiments rooted in both jazz and atmospheric electronica. "Angel In Disguise", his long-promised follow-up, takes a similar approach, layering his own intricate piano playing and occasional vocals over skittish, off-kilter beats, droning electronics, ghostly ambient tones, Nathan Fake style fuzz-fuelled melodies and occasional up-tempo, almost club-ready beats. The obvious comparison is James Blake circa his 2011 debut album, but that doesn't really do justice to the boldness and inventiveness of James' compositions. The best advice we can give is to listen to the clips: we'd be surprised if you were disappointed.
