OG Anthem
OG Anthem (Amir Alexander Guerilla Soul rework)
Listen Up
VLCTY
Review: Leeds burgeoning vinyl only label Albion Records is ready to follow up the success of their debut EP from Fabio Monesi with three new tracks from De Sluwe Vos. The fast rising Dutchman is a staple on his local Amsterdam scene and plays clubs like Studio 80 and many big festivals with his impressive live show. The EP comes with a remix from hotter than hot Chicago talent Amir Alexander. First up, 'OG Anthem' is a muscular house banger with monstrous kick drums, heavily filtered, darkened male vocals and plenty of steely synth work. Its eerie yet ravey, brutal like a Martyn beat but swung to perfection. Amir Alexander's 'Guerrilla Soul Re Werk' is a sympathetic rework of the original that comes imbued with plenty of deep space sci-fi vibes and plenty of the Chicagoan's trademark percussion. On the flip, 'Listen Up' is another forceful jam with driving, rubbery kick drums underpinning plenty of taught synth basslines and icy hi hats. It's raw, fully hardcore deep house as is last cut 'VLCTY', which pings and punches down below as darting vocal cries shoot out of the tough groove to bring a sense of micro-funk. Searching, apocalyptic synths constantly roam down below and once again the track showcases De Sluwe Vos's ability to make beefy bangers with plenty of charm.

Review: It's been a busy year for Belgian imprint Token with killer EPs coming from Rodhad, Xhin, Inigo Kennedy and the impending album from O [Phase]. Ctrls now presents his third EP for the label and matches his Northern Structures studio buddy Lasse Buhl with solo releases this year. As usual Ctrls has his Vermona drum machine cranking full tilt with the two tracks "Modular Framework" and "Displacer", with the latter reworked twice by Sleeparchive who turns it into something a little more stripped back and caustic. The Token techno machine marches on!

Review: Over the course of ten tracks to appear on Frames Of Reference, the long-time coming debut album by O [Phase], the Englishman draws upon ideas he's been fine tuning for more than a decade. Of the fresh material is the rich bass and sinister crawl of "On The Edge", the haunted glass whistles of "Dirtro II" and the respective electro and dubby leaning "Just Another Dance" and "Shadow Caster". Rearranged riffs come via the LP's opening track "Binary Opposition (process 3)" which sets the tone for a heady mix of no frills techno undeniably designed for club play. It's an impressive debut which incorporates elements of muscular European rhythmics with passages of motor city mechanics and melodic tonality.

Review: Having launched Off Minor Recordings with some of his own refined solo material under the Cry Baby J moniker, Jordan Czamanski adopts a more archival tone for the label's second release, digging into the unreleased early nineties works of Move D. Recorded at his KM20 Studio in hometown Heidelberg (hence the name) The KM20 Tapes feel all too appropriate for contemporary analysis, drawing on a smudged and improvised approach to analogue electronics that would pique the interest of fans of LIES, TTT et al. The rugged drawn out acid of "Ovi Riese" in particular bangs the box in a degraded manner that is most pleasing. Excitingly, this is the first of an irregular series of archival material from Moufang on Off Minor with Czamanski apparently sitting on a tonne of tracks.

Drogato
Dois
Review: Munich trio Tambien come through with their most high profile release yet, gracing the esteemed ESP Institute with an excellent two track excursion in the shape of Drogato. Formed of Public Possession founders Marvin and Valentino and their Munich pal Bartellow, Tambien first emerged on a killer white label release last year before inaugurating the Public Possession label in final style with the Robusto / Sexalitat EP. The sonic themes explored there - straight to tape analogue techno throw downs where robust, rumbling drums duke it out with sinuous basslines - might not seem immediately suited to an ESP release but you can't fault the two productions on Drogato. The title cut implements the sort of psychedelic qualities amidst the rhythmic intensity that clearly appealed to Lovefingers but it's the 12 minute B Side that really impresses. "Dois" swaggers at mid tempo, teasing out a classic breakbeat over a backdrop of sound rich in emotion and colour.

Review: AVN #011 sees Shifted and Ventress' Avian label look to the USA for the first time, as it taps up New York producer Shaun O'Sullivan for a six-track EP under his new 400PPM alias. O'Sullivan already has a deep knowledge of techno developed over a broad range of musical projects as anyone who has heard his excellent releases for The Corner and L.I.E.S. will attest. Bookended by two stark explorations into noise, the EP is joined by four solid techno productions which all marry the hard-hitting industrial sounds of pioneers like Adam X together with the rolling percussion and impressive sound design of the Berghain school of Dettmann and Klock. The off-kilter syncopations and metallic clutter of "Monoculture" is a particular highlight in what is another essential 12" from Avian.

One Night In Tanzania
How To Build A Pyramid
Nightmares
Review: The mysterious 'man from Marseille' VernoN joins Marquis Hawkes in contributing a second 12" of rattling, unhinged techno for Glasgow's excellent Dixon Avenue Basement Jams and we think this might be the best release from the label yet! With a title like How To Travel The Universe (Without A Flying Saucer)it's definitely the best named DABJ platter thus far. Musically, the four tracks here build on the instant gratification of VernoN's debut missive, if anything showing a tougher side to the Frenchman. "One Night In Tanzania" is perhaps the stand out track, nestling snugly in the interzone between deep and deranged whilst B Side pair "How To Buiild A Pyramid" and "Nightmares" sit steadfastly in the latter camp. B1 is all jagged acid lines shooting out in various directions amidst cascading drums whilst B2 is pure jacking intensity.

Review: First emerging in 2006, Swedish producer Martin Skogehall has put his name to various projects with MRSK the most immediately recognisable. Adopting the mantle for a 2010 EP on Rush Hour, subsequent MRSK material has surfaced closer to home as Skogehall has been welcomed into the Skudge fold for a series of EPs as well as the Fishermen collaboration shared with compatriot Thomas Jaldemark. Granted the freedom to expand his creative remit by Skudge, Skogehall now unveils a new project in the shape of the macabre Smell The Flesh. Rather than a black metal side project, Smell The Flesh is described by the label as "a journey beyond techno that almost takes a shamanistic turn", with a heavily syncopated "voodoo" approach and atmospheric texture that has much in common with the recent output of William Bennett's Cut Hands project or Dominick Fernow's Vatican Shadow.

Review: Rich Oddie of Orphx delivers a very solid EP of dubby electro and submerged techno to the rejuvenated Surface LTD. It's his second EP for the label since launching it like the nuclear ice-sub that emblazons this release. The title track is regimented by disgruntled sonar blips and fizzing snare hits, while "Bloodstream" finds that happy medium between the pounding grooves of Jeff Mills and Regis. "Undercurrent" is twanging, Aphex-twin like electro, while "Quintessence" - an EP highlight - is one for lovers of aqueous and power dub techno.

Ben & Gerd (Killin It M Day)
TV (Extra Sauce)
Review: Mr G's production renaissance has been one of the more heart warming narratives of 2013 for fans of good old fashioned house and techno, with Colin McBean's popping up on all manner of labels. The Old Miami sees McBean add Gerd Janson's finely curated Running Back to his CV and there's a wonderful back story to go with it. The genesis of these two productions was this year's DEMF where McBean found himself in the backyard of the reputable veteran's club The Old Miami enjoying the sounds of Janson and young Ben UFO going B2B at a party hosted by the Visionquest crew. Suitably inspired, some time back in the Mr G studio resulted in two slabs of prime, rolling deepness that McBean does so well

Going Home

Hear Me Out
Review: Picking a choice selection of jams from the recent Rekids collection, Retrospective in its vinyl guise makes for a thoroughly handy package of early cuts from one of the steadfast heroes of UK house music. Colin McBean is no more in his element than on "Going Home" with its stripped down but driving groove, while the domineering synth lines nail that emotional ambiguity that makes the music of Mr G so compelling. "Mmmm" is a more overt party-rocker with its hooky use of vocal snippets and a killer bassline over some effortlessly addictive, tech-powered drums.

Review: Blank Slate continue their 2013 charge with the Bergstrom EP from Mirko, who first appeared on the label's debut; a various artist release. The title track signals the EPs intentions from the first beat: muscular, and in parts - like "Ekaterina" - funky techno. On the flip "State & Revolution" opts for something more minimal in sound which is slightly dubby, while the concluding "Damperhof" is a mournful death scene of deep violas and double bass.

Tong Zi Dan
Tong Zi Dan (Mike Dehnert remix)
Review: Since the 2009 release of Simian Mobile Disco's second album, Temporary Pleasure, featuring their direction changing "1000 Horses Can't Be Wrong", the English duo have continued to mine a techier, house and techno inspired sound. Following their recent Sacrifice collaboration with house heads Bicep, the Tong Zi Dan EPs builds on the pair's progressive style of production; drums are now thicker, chords are full and percussion is strong. For some extra back up, SMD have invited Fachwerk boss Mike Dehnert to remix "Tong Zi Dan" - which could have gone either way. The Berliner saves listeners from something as slamming as "Pneumatic", instead delivering a remix of laid back, but heaving grooves, similarly sounding to the Dehnert sound of Fachwerk 25.

Review: The second anonymous release from the Papers label suggest Truss could be at it again, or perhaps Bleaching Agent? AnD? A combination of all three? Or, none; at this stage we can only guess. Papers 02 opens with the noisy power techno similarly heard on the recent Spiker EP from Perc Trax, while "Track 2" settles some of the clamour for dubbed-out drums and rising chords that harbour all the pleasantries of a Virgo Four track, only bolstered by a techno framework. The final production on the EP is high energy, something you could expect from an earlier Tessela production. The drums are again busy, and percussive cymbals fast, while Middle Eastern and other looped vocals sound like they're speaking through a telephone. Shredding techno from the Papers label.

Four Cunts & A Badge
Same Old Brand New You
Review: Over the past few months the anonymous Blacknecks outfit have put their own stamp on the hardened industrial techno sounds currently sweeping the globe, delivering two strong EPs of tough rhythms and distorted basslines. This third 12" from the project sees something a little less po-faced, especially on opening track "Fash", whose arpeggiated bassline and simplistic melody comes across like classic '80s synth wave put through a threshing machine. "Four Cunts and a Badge" might be heavier, but still maintains that tongue in cheek tone, as its searing synth lines sound like they've purposely been pushed to the limit for an almost comic effect. "Same Old Brand New You" is perhaps the straightest track here with its solid 4/4 march, but its wiry percussion and white noise breakdown sounds like an android in its death throes.

Back Alley Terminator
Back Alley Terminator (Andreas Gehm remix)
Back Alley Terminator (Mick Wills remix)
Back Alley Terminator (Valanx remix)
Review: Ahead of his Desolate Figures LP due on Tabernacle next month, John Heckle drops the brilliantly named "Back Alley Terminator" on the same label together with a clutch of similarly hard-hitting remixes. The original is a proper acid banger in true Heckle style, surrounded by blasts of euphoric '80s synths and heavy set kicks. Andreas Gehm cleans up the surrounding interference for his remix, making the 303 line the centre of attention, Mick Wills turns in something on more of an EBM tip filled with the kind of rolling arpeggios you can see going down well at a World Unknown party, and Valanx does something else entirely with a shadowy rework filled with droning pads and sluggish industrial rhythms that sound like Einsturzende Neubauten at their most reflective.

Audio Injection - "Charge"
Dax J - "From The Grave"
Cleric - "Natural Process A"
Franco Gonzalez - "Submarine"
Review: Emerging from nowhere earlier this year, the LDN WHT label made quite the impression with their inaugural release incorporating full on productions from Bleaching Agent, Viktoria Rebekah, Krill Music's Espen Lauritzen and under rated Dutchman Charlton. The vinyl only London operation offer a similarly intriguing selection for release number 2 with Audio Injection and Dax J the headline draw alongside up and comers Franco Gonzales and Cleric. The presence of David Flores' Audio Injection project is naturally quite impressive and "Charge" is typical of the booming heavyweight material the Los Angeles resident has been filtering through his own Droid imprint. Ear To The Ground's Dax J is on fine form with "From The Grave" which takes a frenetic approach to taut acid tinged raw techno that still finds room for moments of mechanised emotion. Down town "Natural Process A" sees Cleric draw on the melodic approach of 'BFC' era Carl Craig within a modern rhythmic framework whilst Argentinean Gonzales demonstrates a looseness in drum programming that immediately catches the ear on "Submarine".

Review: Abdulla Rashim teams up with Axel Hallqvist for the serious kind of gloaming techno you'd expect from these two on Semantica - the label's second release this week. "Skog" is underpinned by a throbbing bassline as effervescent ambience and textures - that if visible would look like Norway's northern lights - constantly evolving, disappearing and reappearing throughout the entire track. While over on side-B, "Mark" pulsates like a Mike Parker loop that's been thrown of course by a possessed Tibetan singing bowl.

Review: Will Bankhead's curatorial role at the head of The Trilogy Tapes strikes gold once more with the Firebomb EP from Rezzett. Even the most accomplished search engine detectives out there tend to come up short when it's down to attempting to uncover who is behind the Rezzett material. Aside from a YouTube channel populated by videos of gauzy electronics, a recently established Facebook artist page and plenty of online speculation, there's little tangible information out there on Rezzett. Regardless of his/her/their identity, Rezzett clearly know their way around explosive, synapse blowing techno with "Yayla" a stand out moment; despite it being nine minutes of crushing machine made music, it still ranks of one of the most beautiful things to appear on The Trilogy Tapes since it's foundation.
